00:00Jason Hogan, I'm the manager of the crash investigation unit for the New South Wales
00:03Police Force.
00:07About ten past four yesterday afternoon police and emergency services were called to Toowoomba
00:12Road in Nullica in relation to a crash between a dual cab ute and a Kenworth tipper truck.
00:19Upon arrival they found the scene and unfortunately a six year old boy in the dual cab ute was
00:27declared deceased. Two young girls aged two and eight were taken to Sydney Children's
00:35Hospital and the 31 year old driver was airlifted to Canberra Hospital. The 52 year old truck
00:42driver was taken to Bega Hospital where he underwent mandatory testing and he was treated
00:47for shock.
00:48Do you have an update on the conditions of the patients today?
00:53Yeah, all the patients from the ute remain in hospital and the truck driver has been released
00:59from hospital.
01:00About that young girl who was taken to Randwick for life, what kind of condition is she in
01:05time?
01:06At this stage she's still in the hospital undergoing treatment from specialists.
01:10So has her injuries been described as serious or fighting for life? Where does she consider
01:16our information issues serious but stable?
01:17What was the circumstances around this crash? There was obviously a father and his kids
01:23were getting home. Do we know much about what they were doing and what?
01:28Yeah, those circumstances will be investigated by the crash investigation unit to obtain a full
01:33detailed account for what happened.
01:35Talk a little bit about the area that's happened on the line. Would you describe it as a local
01:42road or what's happening up there?
01:43It's a road that runs about 10 kilometres south west of the township of Eden and it's
01:50a thoroughfare through the state forest. The reasons that the car and the truck are
01:56in that area, they'll be part of the investigation.
01:58Windy roads sealed or unsealed? Are conditions particularly dangerous or different at that
02:05time?
02:06No. We've got nothing to suggest that the road conditions at this stage were dangerous,
02:09but all those enquiries will form part of our investigation.
02:12Any time you're talking about family being involved with child violence, what's the
02:17horrific right, something that's going to be felt amongst the local community, emergency
02:21services or responding as well?
02:23Yeah, it's a terrible tragedy that we need to avoid.
02:27Drivers need to be careful, they need to drive to their conditions, obey the road rules
02:32and make sure that they get themselves and their passengers home safely.
02:36Of course these crashes are always tragic but in smaller communities they've felt a little
02:41bit harder aren't they sometimes?
02:42They can be, yes. It is unfortunate that crashes like this happen in local communities
02:48and regional New South Wales does have its unfortunate share of fatal crashes.
02:54Is there anything untowards about this incident that you guys have picked up on so far or various investigations up to?
03:00No, the circumstances of the crash will be looked at by the crash investigation unit to be put before the coroner.
03:07Of course the water safety needs to be right, it doesn't matter if you're on a road trip or if you could be about five minutes from home, you've always got to pay attention don't you?
03:16Yeah, you do need to drive to the conditions, make sure that you get home safe, don't speed, don't drink and drive and take care.
03:24Okay.
03:25Okay.
03:26Okay.
03:27Okay.
03:28What are the challenges you from here?
03:32Yeah.
03:33Okay.
