00:00Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live here on KNTV. I'm Azaria Gale and this is a show for
00:28students by students. Each week we will explore different facets of student life across Kent
00:35with a range of topics and segments. This week we're going to be focusing on exam season. With
00:42students all across the county preparing for their end of year exams we're going to take a look at the
00:47various ways which students go about preparing for their exams and assessments. First we went out to
00:54the University of Kent campus to ask students about the different ways they prepare for their exams
00:59and the advice they would give to other students who have exams coming up. Well I usually try to plan
01:06ahead knowing once I have my exam trying to plan in advance a few months to start and like getting
01:13through all the material and doing mock exams before the exam and just try not crumple up all the work
01:20that I have to do the day before my exam. A lot of times I just watch lecture recordings back and
01:24then make notes and I do a lot of pacing and then just memorize the notes and then a lot of past paper
01:29questions or like programming because I'm computer science so a lot of it is programming as well.
01:33I personally find that we do well revising writing whiteboards communicating with each other and our
01:41little my whole house does law so we all go and study together and we'll basically like teach each other
01:46the best we feel comfortable like most confident in. Before exam I was focusing main on the numerical
01:52problems which are the quite and quite tough so basically I'm one of my module which is too tough for me so
02:02I was focusing on the that particular module and you know I'm spending more time on in library and
02:10take a difference of books and stuff like that. A lot of past paper questions and doing a lot of
02:17mass revision they have a lot of mass questions for all subjects it's very mass-based and revising the
02:22basics helps a lot too. Now with exams being a stressful time for many students not knowing where to go for
02:30support there are a range of resources available to them ahead of their assessments. Our reporter Arthur
02:36Navarro Allen went to speak to the Skills for Academic Success team from the University of Kent to find
02:43out the ways in which students can get study support and advice. Exam season is the most difficult time on
02:50the academic calendar and many students soon find themselves in need of a helping hand. That's where
02:56the Skills for Academic Success team comes in. With exam season fully underway we've come to the
03:02University of Kent Canterbury campus to talk with Carla Morris on how to keep a cool head and make
03:08the most of the revision process. I would say with approaching any revision of a subject try to make it
03:18fun or interesting so you can it doesn't necessarily have to be sitting down you know in in a library
03:25carol you know with your head you know sort of poring over books you could you can record it you know
03:32you can read it to yourself in an interesting way put unusual voices on it use visuals visuals are very
03:42powerful memory boosters so associate your topic areas with visuals so that you know they will come
03:53more readily to your mind so what we do say more generally to all students is again to make sure that
03:59they're pacing themselves to make sure that they are not overtired make sure that they've eaten properly
04:07with revision it's it's important to try and start um well in advance of the exam to give yourself time
04:14so it's always a good idea in a way to build in revision as you study with such a wide variety
04:21of revision techniques available we asked Carla which one she thought was the best there's there's
04:27a method called the pomodoro method which is yeah so you can um it's okay i'm just gonna i'm gonna
04:34study for half an hour now put my phone away and then i'm going to get up for 10 minutes and i'm
04:38going to have a look at you know whatever tick tock or whatever i want to do make a cup of coffee and
04:43then come back again because it's very important to allow yourself those breaks um otherwise if you sit
04:50down you decide i'm just going to you know revise straight through for three hours or through the night
04:55you're not going to do that your mind will wander you'll get overtired you'll probably get very
04:59stressed and if you work better in a team then there are peer review options available
05:04dr oliver parrot webb explains more so peer assisted learning is a program that we run um whereby students
05:12who are um generally speaking currently in stage two moving into stage three or it can be stage ones
05:18moving into stage two or even foundation students moving into stage one um would use their recent
05:23experience of that course and that stage to run study support sessions for uh students in earlier
05:31stages so if we take for example you have a stage two student moving into stage three they would train
05:35as a peer assisted learning leader and then they would run study support almost kind of homework club
05:41style sessions specifically what i do and what me and my colleagues do is we meet with students on a
05:46one-to-one basis generally speaking um although we do group appointments as well and we work through
05:52any kind of academic difficulties that students are kind of facing um whether that be with to do with
05:57writing essays feedback um anything else that's coming up in their studies revision for exams we would
06:03talk about with them a lot and we also go out into schools and run sessions to again help with those
06:08kind of those study and learning skills so if you're feeling the crunch this exam season then don't
06:14worry because help is always available arthur navara allen kmtv now that we've heard from the
06:22professionals let's hear from someone going through this time firsthand i'm joined in the studio by sam
06:29cochrane a final year media student to talk about his experience with exams and final assignments thanks
06:35for being here sam thank you for having me on first let's talk about assignments how does preparing for a
06:41final assignment differ for you from preparing for a final exam well for me i think there's such a big
06:46difference between the two for example exams i find really stressful i find planning when you don't
06:52know what's coming up a whole lot for my brain and i'll end up laying around thinking about it thinking
06:57what's going to come up in that paper what's going to come after that question and i honestly can't
07:02stand them but essays i find a lot more relaxing because i can be more prepared i can plan out what i want
07:07to do like what i think what questions i want to answer you know what's ahead of you so i find that
07:13so much easier and like that's so much helpful for me rather than exams which stress me out and i hate
07:20them so how do you deal with the stress around the end of the academic year the way i go about it is
07:27honestly planning for like the bright side and planning for every scenario making sure i know what's coming
07:34making sure i know what i'm doing and just spending time with friends like going for walks like playing
07:40football i've been running a lot lately just to get out with my own heads and make sure i like can chill
07:46out a bit and not stress out too much because that ends up just not benefiting me in the long run with
07:50all of my assessments and all my exams and stuff so how do you plan a schedule around revising for exams
07:57and making sure you do have that balance between work and having time for yourself see i'm a big calendar
08:02person like i'll love my calendar on my phone i'll put in all my dates and all my stuff i need to do
08:07and hand in and i'll work towards it over a length of time planning which subjects i need to do what i
08:13need to do when if i do that it gives me a sense of relaxation knowing that oh i check it i've got this
08:19to do today this to do tomorrow and i like kind of over time towards the deadline and towards the days of
08:25exams it just helps me so much and honestly takes away from my stress a little bit knowing i'm in a good
08:30scenario and position nice so what do you find is the most effective way to stay focused when revising
08:38and what revision technique do you find the most helpful the way i find honestly staying focused so
08:43much is not doing too much if i do it in first time hour to half an hour to an hour and a half somewhere
08:49around then it means that i can focus a lot more because my time's like frame for like looking at
08:55things and focusing is not that great so if i just focus on one thing for like this time it means i
09:01don't get distracted i don't get overworked and i just focus like that and it's very similar honestly
09:05for revision just pick when to do bits spend this amount of time on that this part time on that and
09:10i just know that that's how long i have for it and helps me focus on it and stay focused yeah great
09:16and let's talk about something a bit more enjoyable than exams let's talk about post exams so how do you
09:22unwind after exams the best way to unwind for me is always a holiday of some kind be it in this
09:28country be it with my friends or family just spending time doing what i couldn't do because
09:33i've been camping revising and planning and stuff like that so being able to take a bit of time with
09:37my family a bit of time with my friends and just preparing loads of different activities that i had to
09:41look forward to after the exam season it's such a good way to do it oh it's like the best thing ever
09:47is realizing you're done with your exam you can get on to spend time in what you want to do
09:51yeah thank you so much for joining me well we also wanted to get some inspiration from other students
09:59about what they do to treat themselves after the stressful season of their final term let's have a
10:05look after this month after the month of august my all the things are will be finished so i'm planning
10:12to go to spend for the spending my vacations i think it depends because last year we definitely
10:17wanted to relax after exams and like go out have fun i usually go back home visit my family come back
10:25love to go on like vacation or something to actually feel that finally i'm done with exams um yeah i went
10:32out with my friends like in the beginning everything was so hectic so after exams i had some time free so
10:38i went to london and enjoyed some places there trying to plan holidays but i'll be booked after exams to see
10:45if i need to reset or not but hopefully hopefully hopefully holidays uh we have for first uh friends
10:52birthday so tomorrow after our last exams and after that we are going to go to talks for it to visit the
11:00city and then we're going to the uh windsor horse show i just go on holiday when i can afford to um
11:08um that's really what i do so yeah because i need break off everything so i just go on holiday really
