00:00Feeding a speech at the Select Forum, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared his support for
00:15Latin American and Caribbean countries to reject external interference.
00:19U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in the Saudi Arabian capital of Rajat on Tuesday on his first
00:28international tour of the Middle East since taking office.
00:36The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed on Tuesday the entity's
00:40concern about the deportation of Venezuelan migrants illegally incarcerated in the top
00:45security second prison in El Salvador.
00:53Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in
00:57Habana, Cuba.
00:58We begin with the news.
01:11In China, during a speech at the Select Forum, President Xi Jinping declared his support for
01:16Latin American and Caribbean countries to reject external interference and follow a development
01:22path in accordance with their national conditions.
01:25During his inaugural speech at the fourth edition of the China Select Ministerial Forum, the
01:30Chinese President said that the countries of the region stand united against geopolitical
01:35tensions, confrontations, unilateralism and protectionism.
01:39On the other hand, he rejected bullying and high-handed practices a day after Beijing and Washington
01:45announced a truce that will see tariffs cut by 10% and 30%.
01:51And Xi Jinping also said that China and select will implement the global development initiative to
01:56defend the multilateral trading system and strengthen industrial chains.
02:07Faced with the undercurrents of geopolitical and bloc confrontation, the rise of unilateralism
02:14and protectionism.
02:17China is willing to join hands with Latin America to launch five major initiatives for shared
02:23development and revitalization, and to build a China-Latin America community with a shared
02:29future.
02:32In this context, the Chinese President writes China's select ties over the past decade and
02:37announced credits worth $9.2 billion for development projects in Latin America.
02:44I feel extremely gratified that in the last 10 years, thanks to the meticulous cultivation
02:53of both sides, the China Select Forum has grown from a tender shoot into a great sturdy tree.
03:05Although China lies a far distance from Latin America and the Caribbean region, the two sides
03:16have a time-honored history of friendly exchanges.
03:23In order to support the development of Latin American and Caribbean countries, China will provide
03:3066 billion renminbi in credit to the Latin American side.
03:38For its part, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticized the United States for pushing unilateral
03:44hegemony and using tariffs to bully other countries.
03:47Today's world, the trend of a multipolar world, and economic globalization is surging forward,
03:54but a certain major power is obsessed with the idea that might makes right, and puts itself
03:59above everyone else.
04:00It is trying to replace international rules with the law of the jungle, and replace the
04:05multilateral system, with unilateral, hegemony.
04:10It is also using tariffs as a weapon to bully other countries.
04:13Such actions have violated the legitimate rights and interests of the entire world, including
04:18China and Latin American countries, undermined the multilateral trading system based on rules,
04:24and disrupted the stability of the global political and economic order.
04:30In a statement during her three-day trip to Japan, the Director General of World Trade Organization,
04:35Ngozi Okonjo-Iwaela referred to the current global trade status.
04:40Trade is facing very challenging times right now, and it's quite difficult.
04:46But I also feel that there are many important opportunities in trade that we need to look forward
04:54and we should try to use this crisis as an opportunity to solve the challenges we have, and take advantage
05:03of the new trends in trade.
05:05In Russia, at least six civilians were killed and 17 others were wounded after attacks by the Ukrainian army in the middle of the 72-hour
05:11truth declared by Moscow.
05:25The Special Envoy of the Russian Foreign Ministry for the Crimes of the Kyiv Regime, Rodion Miroshnik, denounced that the attacks caused damage to residential buildings, medical transport, civilian vehicles and business premises.
05:40Maidoshnik added that these aggressions, made with heavy weapons, were registered in the border
05:45province of Korksk.
05:47On the other hand, in the locality of Svanoe, a man was killed by a rocket launcher attack while
05:53in the English Kobo, a woman was killed by an aviation bomb.
06:03British Police on Monday were investigating an overnight fire at the London House where Prime Minister
06:09Kate Starmer lived before he was elected to lead the country.
06:13Since taking office in July, Starmer has lived in the Prime Minister's official Donning Street
06:19residence, renting out the family home in the Kent Easttown neighborhood.
06:23London's Metropolitan Police Force said that counter-terrorism officers were involved in the investigation.
06:30The city's fire department said that firefighters were called to a small fire just after 1 am local
06:36time.
06:37According to the police force, the fire is being investigated and curtains remain in place while
06:42inquiries continue.

07:02Welcome back to From the South.
07:16US President Donald Trump arrived in the Saudi Arabian capital of Rijad on Tuesday on his first
07:22international tour of the Middle East since taking office.
07:26The tour will last four days and will also take him to Qatar and to the Arab Emirates.
07:31During his stay in the Arab Kingdom, US President Trump is scheduled to inaugurate a US Saudi investment
07:37forum and will be received by the highest authorities of the Saudi royal family.
07:43President Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia will focus on investment and trade deals, but it
07:48comes at a critical time for the region with Washington's attempts to renew the nuclear talk
07:53with Iran.
07:58US Secretary of State Marcos Rubio announced that the United States has imposed new sanctions
08:06on Iran after another round of nuclear talks.
08:10Rubio explained that the actions are part of President Donald Trump's call for maximum pressure
08:15against Iran's proliferation activities and to ensure that Teheran can never obtain a nuclear weapon.
08:22The new sanctions were imposed the day after the fourth round of indirect talks on Teheran's nuclear program
08:28were held in Oman. For his part, Iranian President Massoud Pechenskyan said that the negotiations
08:35are a sign of commitment to peace and the search for an agreement, but made it clear that Teheran
08:41is not willing to abandon its nuclear facilities as demanded by the counterpart.
08:46In Palestine, at least three people were killed and 10 injured after a new Israeli attack hit the
09:12largest hospital in southern Gaza. Health authorities reported that the bombing early Tuesday morning
09:18hit the Surgery Department of Nasser Hospital, located in the city of Kandunis.
09:23The Wafa News Agency reported that the attack killed journalist Hassan Asli, who was receiving treatment
09:30for injuries sustained in an earlier bombing. His death brings to 213 the number of media workers
09:37killed by Israel in Gaza since October 2023. Occupation army attacks claimed at least 11 lives
09:45sincerely this morning.
09:52Israeli Edan Alexander, who was released on Monday by the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement
09:58Hamas, has declined a personal meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
10:04Due to his refusal to meet with the Prime Minister, the Israel Broadcasting Corporation said that
10:11political controversy has been generated within the regime. Although the reasons for his refusal
10:16are not yet known, information sources indicate that the causes may be related to dissatisfaction
10:22with the performance of the Israeli government while he was held hostage. It should be noted that
10:28Alexander is the first person to be released since the eight-week ceasefire with Hamas when violent attacks
10:35on the Gaza Strip took the lives of thousands of people.
10:38In Syria, the education system faces a huge challenge due to deterioration and destruction as a result of the war,
10:53thus preventing the reconstruction and adequate staffing. Several educational institutions were raised to the ground
11:00by the war and have not yet recovered. Some that have obtained the support of international entities for restoration
11:07face a shortage of experts. The closure of numerous schools has forced students to flock to the few schools
11:14that are still functioning, causing them to be beyond capacity due to a shortage of teachers. The government is undertaking
11:21more reconstruction efforts in deteriorated schools, and the United Nations Children's Fund reports
11:27that over seven and a half million children in Syria need humanitarian assistance.
11:37In Libya, at least seven people were killed after heavy clashes between armed groups in the capital Tripoli.
11:43According to a statement from the Libyan Center for Emergency Medicine and Support,
11:48the bodies whose identities are still unknown were found by the body recovery unit in the streets near the epicenter of the conflict.
11:57The clashes between the stability support apparatus and a coalition of the joint force in Mizrata
12:03followed the assassination of the head of the support apparatus, Abdul Ghani al-Kigli, known as Giniwa.
12:11In this regard, the Ministry of Interior has called on all citizens not to leave their homes,
12:16and the city's educational institutions have suspended all academic activities indefinitely.
12:22The governments of India and Pakistan announced the cessation of mutual military operations as of this month, May 12.
12:34India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to announce the suspension of his operations
12:39against military infrastructure in Pakistan, while stressing that it would continue to closely monitor the actions of his neighbour and act accordingly.
12:49Modi, for his part, stressed that any terrorist attack against India would be met with an appropriate response.
12:56Following this announcement, Pakistan announced that the end of its military operation launched on May 10 last year
13:03and in response to Indian military activities in Pakistani territory.
13:08Relations between India and Pakistan remained tense after the April 22 attack in Palhal-Gham,
13:15in Indian-administered territory that left 21 Indian and one Nepali dead.
13:21After a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan's most educational institutions in Kashmir reopened on Tuesday,
13:35the authorities decided to reopen schools after assessing the security situation,
13:40especially in areas close to the line of control and international border.
13:45However, schools in areas such as Kupwara, Baramuja and Guresh sub-districts remain closed as these are still under supervision.

14:47Welcome back to From the South.
14:49The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Rhetoric, expressed Tuesday the entity's concern
14:55about the deportation of non-nationals, in particular the cases of hundreds of Venezuelan migrants
15:00illegally incarcerated in the top security second prison in El Salvador.
15:05The United Nations rights chief detailed that since U.S. President Trump took office in January,
15:11142,000 immigrants have been deported from that nation.
15:18In this regard, the diplomat was worried about a wide array of rights that have been violated with,
15:24which are fundamental to both U.S. and international law.
15:28Turek further denounced that the fate and whereabouts of some 245 Venezuelans and 30 Salvadorans
15:35removed to El Salvador remain unknown.
15:38Likewise, he claimed that the detainees' families granted that the migrants were taken to the second prison without being notified.
15:46The deportation over recent months of large numbers of non-nationals from the United States of America,
15:56especially to countries other than those of their origin, raises a number of human rights concerns.
16:02The UN Human Rights Office has information from family members and lawyers regarding more than 100 Venezuelans
16:09believed to be held in Secot.
16:12These reports indicate that many of the detainees were not informed of the U.S. government's intention to deport them to be held in a third country,
16:21that many did not have access to a lawyer,
16:24and that they were effectively unable to challenge the lawfulness of their removal before being flown out of the U.S.
16:30This situation raises serious concerns regarding a wide array of rights that are fundamental to both U.S. and international law.
16:39Rights to due process, to be protected from arbitrary detention, to equality before the law,
16:45to be protected from exposure to torture or other irreparable harm in other states, and to an effective remedy.
16:53Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government denounces the omissive and biased attitude of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights,
17:02Volker Tork, in the face of violations against Venezuelans abroad.
17:06In a communique, the Venezuelan government pointed out that her recent lukewarm statement demonstrates an unacceptable double standard.
17:15While she vehemently attacks Venezuela, she remains silent in the face of abuses committed by government aligned with hegemonic interests.
17:25She seems more concerned with preserving her office than with defending human rights.
17:30The document also states that the position of High Commissioner requires firmness, not ambiguity.
17:36Her inaction in the face of these crimes reflects a negligent and complacent attitude towards the systematic violation of the human rights of Venezuelans.
17:46Venezuela will continue to demand justice and denounce the political use of our migrants as a hostage in the war against our people.
17:55Venezuela will continue to demand justice.
17:56Venezuela will continue to demand justice.
18:01Panama celebrates 21 days of an indefinite national strike initiated by teachers in rejection of Law 462 and denounces the arrest of union leaders.
18:10The single union of construction and similar industry workers also repudiated the government's intention to reopen a copper mine in the province of Cologne
18:20and rejected the construction of a dam in Rio, India for the canal against the will of the inhabitants of the region.
18:28Previously, the Ministry of Education of Panama announced the withholding of salaries to teachers who demand the repeal of the law,
18:36which affects workers and their families with the privatization of the services of the Social Security Fund.
18:43The government of Colombia has received intelligence reports about a possible attempt on President Gustavo Petro's life.
18:54According to the Minister of the Interior, Armando Benedetti, intelligence information has been coming in, especially in the last week, about an attack.
19:03Benedetti also explained that there are some people who have been meeting and would like to strike a blow against the president.
19:10Last week, President Petro accused the U.S. Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart of coordinating meetings with politicians in Colombia
19:18with the purpose of overthrowing him through maneuvers in Congress.
19:22Similarly, he took aim at Álvaro Leiva, who was his foreign minister between 2022 and 2024, and with whom he now has a dispute.
19:32A Brazilian defense website denounced U.S. President Donald Trump's new expansionist threat to obtain the usufruct of a strategic portion of Brazil, the island of Fernando de Oronja.
19:50The news broke last week on a defense news website that described the idea as an unrestricted initiative based on an alleged historical right to the investment made by the United States during the Second World War at its airport.
20:05In this way, the United States continues with its more explicit or veiled strategy of externalizing which southern territories it wants to appropriate.
20:15So far this year, President Trump has also shown interest in the territories of Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal.
20:35The Latin American Contemporary Film Festival 2025 will be held in Costa Rica from May 14th to 30th.
