00:00So today, the 80th anniversary of VE Day, is a time for the nation to come together to learn about the stories of those that served in the VE Day generation.
00:14From the servicemen who fought, to the children who were evacuated, and women on the home front, on 8 May 1945, the long-anticipated news resulted in spontaneous celebrations breaking out across the nation.
00:38A national holiday was declared, and people from all walks of life came together to mark the moment.
00:47VE Day 80 is our opportunity to pay tribute to those who fought for the freedom we all enjoy today.
00:57It is a day of joy, reflection and celebration.
01:02Together we honour the past and celebrate a future built on unity, hope, love and peace.
01:11And I welcome the President Tregenza to say a couple of prayers.
01:21And so let us remember before God and commend to his sure keeping those who have died for their country in war,
01:34those whom we know and whose memory we treasure, and all who have lived and died in the service of others.
01:44Let us pray.
01:45O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those men and women who have died in active service, particularly in the Second World War,
01:59whose sacrifice brought victory in Europe.
02:03As we honour their courage and cherish their memory, may we put our faith in your future.
02:12For you are the source of life and hope, now and forever.
02:18Amen.
02:19As we give thanks today for the peace that we have enjoyed in Europe for the past 80 years,
02:28so we recommit ourselves to the cause of peace.
02:35Most Holy God and Father, hear our prayers for all who strive for peace and all who fight for justice.
02:45Help us, who today remember the cost of war, to work for a better tomorrow.
02:52And as we commend to you lives lost in terror and conflict, bring us all, in the end, to the peace of your presence.
03:03Through Christ our Lord.
03:06Amen.
