Two Chinese nationals, enrolled at the National University of Singapore, pleaded not guilty at the KL Sessions Court on Tuesday (May 13) to charges of attempted fraud after allegedly staging a fake kidnapping.

Zhang Runbao, 23, and an 18-year-old boy were accused of orchestrating an elaborate deception targeting the teen's mother.

00:26at a hotel on Jalan Tuanku Abdulrahman. They were accused of sending a video to the victim
00:32showing her 18-year-old son partially undressed, gagged, and appearing to be strangled in an
00:38attempt to extract a ransom of 5 million yuan. The pair were charged under Section 511 of the
00:45Penal Code, which carries imprisonment of 1 to 10 years and a fine upon conviction. They also faced
00:52an alternative charge under Section 417 for cheating, punishable by up to five years' imprisonment,
01:00or a fine if found guilty. Judge Azrael Daruss set bail at RM30,000 each with two sureties
01:07and ordered both accused to surrender their passports. The court scheduled case management on May 27.
