01:05an inspiring edge to the fuse okay we're going to have thought-provoking discussions around women's
01:09issues our triumphs our tribulations but most importantly our togetherness in this journey
01:14and that will be happening every last wednesday of the month so tune in next week and we'll also
01:22be overreacting with one special guest which you'll have to wait and see um so we're really excited to
01:28bring and spice up the way we do the podcast beyond us just sitting and talking but also bringing it to
01:34the radio and listening to some fire music i know you can't wait to listen to your queen
01:40i mean i think that's also just an exciting element that we get to add is just highlighting
01:46female artists globally from across the globe so if you have a favorite artist let us know in the
01:51comment section below yes and ladies you know as with the journey of every woman uh we've taken a
01:58whole pose what has been happening in your lives what's new um gosh the last time we actually filmed a
02:07proper force was 2023 because we last year yeah last year we did what women want so we're talking
02:16about what has happened to us maybe since yeah 2024 so a lot has happened um to be honest it's been a year
02:24of uh growth it's been a year of reflection for me it's been a year of uh wonderful surprises i'm
02:33learning to toot my own horn so from now on i'm top 40 under 40
02:38period um yeah so like even just even the growth for our organizations uh we have a lot more schools
02:48now um in terms of what we're doing with our event space um but just me on a personal level it's been a
02:56season of reflection identifying who i am and feeling comfortable in my skin and uh finding the
03:04voice um in my own space and how i belong so that's been that's been my my year to be honest
03:11that's beautiful and congratulations on your top 40 under 40 thank you thank you thank you
03:16new mission what's up what's up uh my goodness it's just been i don't know i feel like after
03:22covid i have no sense of time everything is just like boom bling um but it's just been really
03:27beautiful for me on a personal level reconnecting more with my family um i've gotten to see my family
03:33more uh for those of you that may know or may not know um i used to live in the u.s and so i go
03:39through these very long periods without seeing my family and for me i every day you just realize the
03:44gift of family and that you got one family and that's it and um i've just been more intentional in
03:50having uh more engaging relationships with my family even though they're across seas we visit
03:55each other a lot often and that means a lot to me i love yes and you are family uh you can tell us
04:01you know what you've been up to what did you miss uh what is that one story that one woman that stood
04:07out uh in our previous episodes uh so we can see whether we can bring her back we can retell the story
04:13uh because we are all about elevating women's stories and voice and their voices as for me as
04:20mo 2024 oh my god i feel like my life changed took out like a 360 uh from um you know my career taking
04:29off um traveling and seeing the world um losing sense of time because i don't know where that year went
04:39it's a real thing um also like learning bits of of me that i thought you know um that were permanent
04:47yet you know the tweets the ups and downs of life uh they called me to rebrand myself to
04:54shed off those um identities perhaps they were given by my family by friends by environment i was in
05:02but i don't resonate with them anymore so it's been good and i love i have i love that transition
05:09and and i hope you know in the new season we can be able to share bits and bits of who we are
05:15yeah in like the year have there been any moments where you've met somebody who's inspired you any
05:23women change makers or any particular interactions that you've had particular lessons um in their last
05:30year um that you can empower somebody else who's listening um well one thing i'll say 2024 was quite
05:38an interesting year it was a year of uprising you know so whether that meant us marching in the streets
05:44against gbv or whether that was the uprising at the gen z challenging the government uh for me a woman
05:51that truly is inspiring is uh jerry migui um who's also been one of our guests previously
05:58and you know to think that in 2024 we started off the year marching through the streets in the
06:03thousands across the entire nation marching against femicide and we still ended the year on
06:09that same note um but one thing i love about jerry she just never tires and so when i think about our
06:15journey with heels for pads and i also think about our journey and sister speaks global we never tire
06:20because we we remember our why and why we're doing this and that is our energy and our fuel to keep going
06:25but that's one woman that definitely comes to mind where the load can be heavy sometimes yeah she
06:30has a heavier 19 yeah you know but i'm just like you are a blessing from god because that's definitely
06:37a calling so someone that inspires me to tap into my life calling and and connecting to your point
06:44around like the people that inspired me it's every woman that showed up that turned out in the streets
06:50you know to end femicide to call out you know uh perpetrators um to call out all forms of gender
06:59sexual um violence um kudos to you um for being a change being a voice um and and this has to end
07:09seriously i feel like that the year 2024 there were there was a bit of heaviness to it very
07:15heavy collectively very heavy um heavy in a way that maybe some people's lives will never be the same
07:22again um say for example you know their moms who lost their sons uh and and we honor those lives that
07:30died in the line you know when we were calling for fairer policies and uh you know calling for
07:37accountability in in this new government and and calling for equality so i think we can do a
07:44moment of silence to every woman that we lost especially those hundred women we lost with them
07:50within 90 days which was very sad and we hope that no more women will be lost in the hands of
08:07absolutely um absolutely um i think even just speaking on that so like yes i totally agree with
08:16jerry i i've been i told her recently because we had a we have an event called hills connect and uh
08:22in the month of march which is uh the month about accelerating action and so we got different women
08:28change makers and before she came i i messaged her and i told her you have such uh an anointing
08:35on you and it's a really heavy load because it's sometimes almost like yes you want to keep hope
08:43alive but it's such a deep and dark topic um so i i had the opportunity of meeting uh leima bowie
08:51who's a noble laureate and we got to watch her her film um something back from hell uh kicking the devil
09:00back to hell um i might be saying it wrong um and her story is very similar because it was about
09:08championing and changing the the narrative of liberians at the time and uh when i was watching
09:15i thought you know like what you're saying is when you listen to people speak and she's saying how it's
09:21really important as us as women and to anybody listening is to have a unified voice because then you have
09:28one angle and one thing that you're fighting for and then that way even your voice becomes louder and
09:34so i think somebody like jerry allowed us to have that space and that voice and even us within our own
09:42platforms just amplifying that femicide is a real actual issue and even beyond before you even get to
09:50femicide there's other levels of domestic violence gender-based violence um ipv as well which is intimate
09:58personal violence too that people don't talk about because when you're in a relationship you kind of
10:03or in marriages you can't discuss that so it was yes it was a heavy tough year and uh however for me 2025
10:13i came into it optimistic and uh focused that what we have done is perhaps laying the groundwork for
10:23better uh for a better kenya uh for a better narrative for all not just women but for all for young people
10:31for men for children uh for women everybody so that's what i'm personally really looking forward are there any
10:39key lessons or if you were to give a synopsis or uh maybe a movie title i know i'm stretching you guys
10:48what would be your movie title for 2024 um i think for me let me like help you guys i'll just pick something
10:57i think for me it was i would say the year of full full of surprises on all realms um from my personal
11:05to just what happened on our national level um i think for me if i had to think of a movie title
11:15um the power of your voice the weight of your voice you know sometimes we don't understand just
11:21the power of one person just speaking up and it just causes a domino effect um for me it was really
11:29inspiring to see the social media uprising of course we know kots are a powerful bunch but watching
11:36that morph into something more and understanding the power of our voice as young people um and watching
11:43um watching the community come together and understand like you know there may be higher powers
11:49but we also have power within ourselves i think for me um that would be a movie title or highlight of the
11:57of the year i think for me it's not a movie it's more like a series the haves and the have-nots
12:05are by our favorite telebury um so we saw the haves and the have-nots in the streets speaking in one
12:12voice and that's what gave me hope for this country yeah i like whether you had your uber bring you to the
12:20street yes whether you have your adibus or adidas politician
12:27whether you ate um in kibandasky or you went to kfc after yeah yes i i love the unity um i love the
12:37oneness the unity um calling for justice and a better kenya so i think that will be my title and one
12:46special thing about kenyans no matter the seriousness or the darkness of any situation i
12:51don't know how people find humor and lightness and yeah there were so many things that came out of that
12:57movement yeah yeah yeah it's the creativity creativity yes yes um i think we can't just
13:05we can't help ourselves i know i think because we're all even in our own right where women change
13:11makers they're people who are listening and uh we were fortunate enough to be around we we've been
13:18fortunate enough actually to be around many versions of change makers in different capacities from um
13:25women's rights to education to agriculture like with all the collective conversations that you've had
13:34or even you as an individual what do you think makes or helps somebody to accelerate
13:41action because that's what the month of march is about it's about pushing forward it's about using
13:47trusting that that one voice is powerful enough to get everybody together you know there's this
13:53picture of that that i've seen before of like black birds and one yellow bird right that yellow bird
13:59could easily it's not because of your outfit but that yellow bird could could easily decide to morph and
14:08become like the black bird but sticks with its own you know emotion and and vibe um how would you say
14:16you have found your voice in your spaces um and how do you use it what works for you and maybe somebody else
14:24can learn i think sometimes we live in such a noisy space these days between whatsapp social media and just
14:34generally life there's a lot of noise around you but i think um honing that that strength and that
14:41inner voice it just requires you to just pause sometimes i think being still is the beginning
14:47of finding that inner voice and hearing it loudly and clearly um so you have to be really intentional
14:52sometimes about just being still so that you can hear yourself because there are so many voices i'm
14:58it's so hard to switch off like i really have a hard time switching off sometimes but that is where
15:03i find the inner voice okay i like that i think mine has been a formula i learned from one of my
15:11managers he says the power of three like the power of three mathematically is like what can you times three
15:21in your life so would that mean spending three minutes to tell someone kind uh like words of
15:28encouragement or or giving them like you know a hug for three minutes six three seconds is it like
15:34finding three girls you can talk to um you know you can change their lives is it three months dedicated to
15:42learning a skill is it like uh three years of dedicating that you know you're going to change your
15:48life and i started reframing that from like how much three minutes means to me and i started doing
15:56like three three minutes pockets of the way you say quieting yourself and quieting your mind so if
16:02i'm i'm telling myself i have a to-do list starting with three minutes what can i do in three minutes
16:08is it stacking priorities with non-argent stuff is it calling someone to tell them i love you for three
16:15minutes is it hugging someone longer three seconds longer and i think it has really changed who i am
16:22yeah yeah power of three power three um mine's biblical it's um the parable of the talents and
16:30asking myself what are my talents because voices are different some people speak some people do it
16:37through writing some people do it artistically some people um do it by gathering communities and not
16:44necessarily being loud about it so identifying myself with the the the parable of the talents
16:52narrative and identifying who am i in the story and what how many talents have i been given and how can
17:00i use them and so over time i've come to identify mine is speaking writing and teaching and so in those
17:07three ways i then now use it to ensure that i am a voice of reason a voice for the voiceless
17:16and uh and also just being okay with being the only one with a different narrative and and being bold
17:25about it like yeah yeah being the yellow bird yeah and just honestly i think it in my 20s i don't think
17:33i would be who i was which is somebody who was maybe always subconscious and conscious about what
17:40what my people think if i say this and so always sometimes you know also wanting to respect your
17:45elders you can't say certain things and now now i realize that you have to find ways of speaking out
17:52in the versions that come easily to you so i think what i would say to somebody is find your voice
17:59through what comes easily don't try and do what your don't try and do what somebody else is doing
18:06and also passions are different right and passions come from percept perception and perspective so for
18:15instance if we're to use njeri as an example the reason why she's really passionate about fighting for
18:22women gbv survivors is because she has a personal experience right and then there'll be somebody else who's
18:29gonna do something around cyberbullying because maybe they went through a particular experience so
18:35find find what you're passionate about and then find a way to align it with your talent i think
18:41would be more like that that's a good word of advice um and when you're talking about the parable
18:45of the talents it reminds me of how we opened up the month of march which was with the heels connect
18:50women's day brunch so one of our guest speakers frida owinka yes um so one of the things she
18:56highlighted in addition to the parable of the talents was talking about how collaboration is a
19:01currency of today yeah so when it comes to your personal journey of accomplishments how what role
19:08has collaboration played in your journey i think there's this um i think it's a statement you know we
19:16you know there's more the return on investment on collaboration is more than competition and when
19:23you understand that formula you understand that you know when you pull in complement in terms of
19:28strengths uh resources uh you can achieve more than completing completing um and i think it has really
19:35worked for me uh on my consulting journey in my career where i have seen more uh or achieved more
19:44impact when i collaborate with people other than you know working alone even what we've been able to
19:50achieve as heal for father sister speaks as a as a result of collaboration but also personally um
19:57in in my own journey um i have talent i have you know my strengths and when i collaborate maybe with
20:06lash maybe to pray with you um mishish to you know to have fun it becomes even more fun i i mean it's you
20:16can't you no man is an island really right yeah so i think collaboration is the key and it's the
20:22currency of today definitely i really loved it when she said that at the event because i think honestly
20:31you can't do a lot alone so just imagine guys we are in a studio right now um we have people around us
20:38who have made this set possible so imagine shout out to our team our crew behind the scenes so imagine
20:48trying to do all this and then we have to edit and then we have to honestly you will you will collapse
20:54you will you won't even go far you you'll do it for for some time because maybe you still got that fire
21:00and whatever but over time it becomes tiring yeah so find somebody who knows how to do something that
21:08you are not so good at find somebody else come together and amplify sometimes also collaboration
21:14is not even about finding someone who has a different strength than you it's it's you're we're
21:19both doing the same thing so we might as well join forces and be able to even live well exactly so what
21:25about you um i mean the power of collaboration just even within ourselves we all bring a different
21:31gift to the table and that has brought us to where we are today you know uh simply speaking um
21:39we are moving into our sixth year lady right yeah because we started in 2019 yeah and um i believe
21:47that everyone has a different gift we've all learned from each other and the power of collaboration
21:54is invaluable it really truly is as you've gone through like your journey of collaboration um
22:02your own journey of like last year and your own personal work journeys and even personal life
22:08what and to even those who are listening i'd love we'd love to hear in the comments what
22:13your your your tips are for navigating any particular challenges that you have experienced and maybe
22:21as we as we are in the spirit of international women's day um let's each and every one of us maybe
22:30highlight uh what we can do or what we are doing uh to accelerate action i think personally in my own
22:39journey my career um i've been able to um exact influence and impact especially in the women in tech through
22:49learning and development uh across sub-saharan africa and in seeing the resilience of people that i
22:55touch with the work that i do seeing um you know the transformation the you know the hope they get
23:02after you're done with the program you know some of them end up you know starting their own innovation
23:08startups business others going to employment and it changes the trajectory of their life
23:14um so in that way i think i'm blessed to be able to accelerate action in that way for to change
23:21people's lives not only in my back backyard so like you know um in the continent and i hope you know as
23:30we grow also these podcasts can be a platform where you know stories of other women say for example in
23:36world in sudan in in nigeria they can be part of what we are doing and and we can cross collaborate
23:44for a bigger impact yeah definitely um i think for me mentorship has been one of those areas um
23:52especially in the media space um being able to mentor other up-and-coming talent uh you know because
23:58none of us did this by ourselves none of us forged our own journey um but the power that you know former
24:05mentors have also given me i've been able to also pay forward to other young ladies that want to get
24:09into the media space um and that i mean for me is a small part of taking accelerating action for other
24:16young women that want to get into media that want to understand the power of their own voice and just
24:21knowing that you can do it you know i think you know i look at someone like mishis over here when when
24:28you first started getting on the mic it's like even for you the sound of your voice sometimes
24:32it's a bit overwhelming to your ears i couldn't do it but look at you girl out there doing
24:36international things you know so and she's actually doing speaking engagements as well yeah look at
24:41her i love it um i think i'll speak on behalf of what we do as an organization and how we're
24:47accelerating action so like this month we're highlighting uh 31 women uh in kenya in africa and
24:55globally who are accelerating in engineering in wind in uh innovation um in terms of sister speaks uh
25:05this year is really about finding ways to get women in business to unlock this and unlock business
25:12opportunities and unlock capital so capital rather and we have uh launched sessa which stands for sister
25:20entrepreneurship society africa which is a capacity building program uh with the intention of getting
25:26women having access to like investment preparedness from my heels for pads point of view um going with
25:33what happened last year um women gbv survivors has been something that because we figured out how to get
25:40the girls access to pads and we have a formula going and so now we want to use our notion of selling
25:47hills for pads to now educate and and uh economically empower is probably the better term uh for women gbv
25:55survivors with skills for digital and entrepreneurship skills so really excited continue uh being on this
26:02journey with us and i think we're about to wrap it up and maybe each and one of you can leave it with a
26:08parting shot around your definition of womanhood i think to your point it's very important to
26:14understand we you know give ourselves some flowers um entrepreneurship is not a walk in the park and i
26:21think uh clock in six years and being able to collaborate and achieve what you've been able to
26:26achieve um if i have not said it before well done ladies well done well done um we've done
26:35yeah i think we don't give ourselves flowers um enough uh we've done so much the people who started
26:44at the journey with us unfortunately they had to to stop either because of covid uh their business
26:52model didn't work and here we are we keep recreating ourselves pivoting and coming up with different
26:58initiatives again with the bigger mission which is to give back to the society to um you know elevate
27:04the girls and women from low-income communities and i think um that's what we are all about even
27:11this platform will continue bringing change makers uh who are exerting influence and change uh in their
27:17own respective initiatives and as i wrap it up in whatever way uh you're changing a life it could be
27:24one person um you know just give yourself grace we are living in such weird times and if you're able to
27:31make someone's life easier god bless you how would you how would you i guess that a nice way to like
27:40even wrap it up into a nice tight bow is each and every one of us define what the beauty of womanhood has
27:46meant for you seen as we're also in the month of march and as we wrap it up the beauty of womanhood i think
27:55as a woman uh women we are multi-faceted um we are not afraid to take on different challenges i think
28:05women one thing about us that's so beautiful is that we're able to easily morph you know and adapt
28:11and um i think that flexibility with us so whether it's us with all of our emotions we know we have to
28:17keep moving um and being able to have that duality of force but also feeling is something that as a
28:25woman in my womanhood i really enjoy i love that i think it's the power um the power we have whether
28:34we know it or not um the the office of woman is for creation and if we tap in that creative energy
28:44we can change the world whether the system wants us to do that or not we are called to be in the
28:51office of creation we create and so if you're able to create change you're welcome to take the center
28:57stage oh i love that oh i don't have much to say but you gotta cry oh okay but i think i would like to
29:07say that uh a woman knows how to hold her pain right you can never really know when she's going through
29:13her periods and she's struggling you know she'll still be present so to all the women who are
29:18holding their pain and still keeping um a safe face kudos to you um it has been a pleasure i know
29:26this podcast has been a little bit longer but allow us because it's been a while since we've been
29:32talking in front of the mics um and just to i guess reiterate um what ang said earlier we're
29:39doing it differently so we're gonna be having an overreact hour on the fuse and it will start on the
29:4526th of march which is next week wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m and we'll be having these kind of
29:53conversations for one hour and listening to um and celebrating music from female artists around the
30:01globe so keep overreacting with us we're back every wednesday from 10 pm so i'm excited yes and you can
30:08follow us on overreact on instagram you can also check us out at sister speaks 254 where we share and
30:15amplify different stories of change makers and women and of course we are on x at sister speaks 254 as well
30:23all right well with all of that said ladies let's overreact
