00:16Where the hell is everyone?
00:17Jenny, anyone?
00:20I've got him.
00:22He's here.
00:30I know you're in here.
00:37It's over.
00:39Come on.
00:40Out you come.
00:43Come on.
00:45Coward.
00:46Finished.
01:00Out you come.
01:29Oh, Hugh.
01:38After all this time, you were so close.
01:46Catch you later, detective.
01:47Catch you later, detective.
01:52Catch you later, detective.
01:57I'm just saying, it's probably going to get a bit messy, that's all.
02:20Hugh, you're 55.
02:21Yeah, well, I can still party like a 20-year-old, aren't I?
02:24Yeah.
02:25What? What was that?
02:26What was that?
02:27I'm just saying, you know what those guys are like, it's going to get a bit wild.
02:31Yeah, how is Toby's angina these days?
02:33Yeah, just because you're not invited.
02:35I've got a date with a hot bath and a bottle of wine, so I'm counting on you not coming home too early.
02:40Well, you know, there's going to be curry and karaoke.
02:43Do not come home early.
02:46Dead man walking.
02:48Stop it, Frank.
02:50He's not bursting into tears all the time, is he?
02:52He is being a very brave little soldier, I'll have you know.
02:55I'm standing here, I'm fine actually.
02:57He does look a wee bit peaky.
03:00Well, he would do.
03:01It's the end of the world for him today, isn't it?
03:03And, you know, are you going to be able to fill in the Еж, if you're a guy?
03:14Well, we could have been able to fill in the air.
03:16So now, we should have a great deal.
03:17We should be able to fill in the air.
03:18We should have to fill in the air.
03:19And then we should have a great deal.
03:20It's our main air.
03:21We should have money.
03:21Oh, hi. I just want to say a quick goodbye to the guys. I won't be a minute.
03:44Oh, shit, Hugh. Is it today?
03:47Yeah, yeah, it is.
03:48Oh, great. Sorry, I've completely forgotten.
03:51How's Alice coping with the idea of having you home every day?
03:57Oh, well, she's booked double-time to work.
04:01Yeah, she's very cool, your wife.
04:04Anyway, mate, listen, good luck, and I'm sorry you're leaving with unfinished business.
04:10Oh.
04:11Still, you...
04:12Yeah.
04:15Yeah.
04:16Sorry, listen, everyone, I just wanted to say I've always wanted to be a cop ever since I was a kid.
04:32And my dad was one, and he was a giant to me, so it's been, you know, my life's dream, so...
04:44Anyway, just good luck to all of you, and just to let you know that I'll be over the road having a farewell pint,
04:54so if you feel like popping in for a quick one or two or ten, then I'll...
05:04Yeah, I'll be there, yeah.
05:05OK, right.
05:06I'll be there, yeah, I'll be there, yeah, I'll be there.
05:36Sorry about them.
05:38It's a stressful case.
05:41Oh, it's no worries.
05:43Buy you a drink?
05:45Yeah, yeah, all right.
05:50Oh, um, I've, uh, got you a present.
05:54I mean, it's nothing, really, but...
05:56Oh.
05:57Yeah.
05:57Oh, thank you.
05:58All right.
06:02God, they're awful, aren't they?
06:03Yeah.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Yeah, I just, I don't know what old men like.
06:06I just thought, you know, I should mark the occasion.
06:08I mean, we're quite the team for a bit.
06:11Yeah, yeah, um, we were.
06:13I mean, thank you.
06:15But I don't wear cufflinks.
06:17Yeah, well, you're welcome.
06:18Miserable arse.
06:18This isn't one of those, oh, let's just pretend to ignore them all day, and then I'm going
06:29to open that door, and they're all going to be there, and I'm going to have to do my
06:32sort of, oh, you guys, sort of face, isn't it?
06:34No, gov.
06:36Really?
06:36Let's get the beers in, eh?
06:47Uh, here it is.
06:49Hi.
06:50Hi.
07:01Who?
07:17Oh, yeah, sorry, it's just that, you know, the freezer's door doesn't close, does it?
07:23So we're never going to get anyone in.
07:25I thought I'd get on with it.
07:26It's 7am.
07:28Well, it's got to be done at some time, isn't it?
07:31Morning, Professor.
07:32Morning, Captain.
07:33Oh, could you not have brushed your teeth before you broke our freezer?
07:38Well, I told you it'd be a big one last night, didn't I?
07:42Anyway, I'm not breaking it. I'm fixing it.
07:45Day one of retirement, going exactly to plan.
08:15Call my name and I enter.
08:19What's this, Papa?
08:20I'm sorry, I'm not breaking it.
08:22Oh, I'm sorry.
08:23Oh, sweet, so.
08:26She's all I'm looking for.
08:30So sweet, so.
08:34You're welcome.
08:35You're welcome.
08:36You're welcome.
08:37You're welcome.
08:38I don't know.
09:08ORCHESTRAL MUSIC
09:38Hi guys, welcome to episode 4 of my podcast,
09:46listing the top 10 greatest cock-ups by the police in the last 20 years.
09:50Today I'm going to tell you all about the Ripton stalker,
09:53and the man who failed to catch him.
09:55Take a bow, Detective Inspector Hugh Miller.
10:03So, you cook a lot, you cycle a lot, you shop a lot,
10:07not a care in the world. Sounds great.
10:11Yeah, yeah, it is.
10:12How long before you blow your brains out?
10:14Give it about two weeks.
10:22Yep, about right.
10:24Ooh, boom, look at that.
10:28There we go.
10:37Hugh.
10:39It's good, I'm just, it's just a bit harder than I expected, that's why.
10:43I should never have taken early retirement.
10:46I mean, I only did that because my pension had matured.
10:49I've just got so much more to give.
10:55Yeah, but you're, you know, you're free now.
11:00Yeah, but...
11:01Do you think there is a single person that lives their lives without regret?
11:05Well, this is different though, isn't it?
11:07It's a useless emotion.
11:10And you know it better than anyone.
11:14Why can't I let it go then?
11:17Because...
11:18You care more than most.
11:21Because you're a good man.
11:22And because you know I'm going to beat you at golf.
11:25Oh, here we go.
11:26And you're coming over all pathetic just to put me off my game.
11:29There's no point in asking you anything, is there, really?
11:31Frank.
11:51Frank.
11:52Frank.
12:01Right?
12:31Hey Frank, Frank, it's here, I just returned your cloth.
12:58Frank?
13:28I don't know.
13:35I don't know.
13:40I know you never can tell, but if you were to ask me which of us would have our eyes, it's
14:02the fittest man I'd ever met, with the dirtiest laugh.
14:17Do you know her?
14:24Yeah, yeah, she's an old friend.
14:28She doesn't seem very friendly.
14:30Are you going back to school?
14:33Sorry, I have to get to this PTA meeting.
14:36This is just terrible, isn't it?
14:38You see how Jenny's just turned up?
14:41What, for a heart attack?
14:43Yeah, I know, it's a bit weird, isn't it?
14:45Try not to get involved.
14:47Yeah, I know, but if Jenny arrives then...
14:49Jenny's not retired, remember?
14:52Okay, see you later, girls.
14:55Bye.
14:56See you, Alice.
14:57Hi, how are you?
15:10I'm fine.
15:11Oh, that's nice.
15:12Can I come in?
15:13Yeah, of course, Jenny.
15:14In you go.
15:15Thanks so much.
15:18Yeah, um, I thought you might help me with the thing.
15:21I just, um, can't get my head round.
15:23Well, about Frank, what did you find?
15:25Oh, no, no, not him.
15:27No, um, I've got a problem with a load of data
15:29that was downloaded onto a flash drive at the station.
15:32Someone copied all the files on the Ripton Stalker case.
15:37You know anything about that?
15:40Well, I'm retired, Jenny.
15:42Yeah, I'm glad you worked that out.
15:43Because someone that stole confidential information from the police
15:46could get themselves into a lot of trouble
15:48if they didn't delete it all immediately.
15:50So what did they think, the paramedics?
15:54What?
15:55Oh, it's nothing, it's an OD.
15:59An overdose?
16:01Well, Frank, he didn't have to eat drugs.
16:04Yeah, well, maybe you didn't know him so well.
16:06No, I knew him.
16:07Yeah, I thought I knew you.
16:09But here you are, lying to my face.
16:18Right, let's get out of here.
16:19Yes, ma'am.
16:20Yes.
16:21Yes.
16:34Yes.
16:35Hi there, love. All right?
16:53Hiya. Yeah. What are you up to?
16:57Oh, yeah, nothing much. Fine.
17:00Oh, good. Oh, good. I was worried for a minute.
17:02You were doing something silly, like snooping around Frank's house.
17:09Are you...?
17:10Don't say a word, all right? I know. I know. Just don't...
17:32Yeah, right.
17:39The Ripton stalker watched his victims for weeks before he acted.
17:43There's a theory he got inside their houses and watched them while they slept.
17:47He'd mess with their minds, move things around their homes, drive them crazy.
17:51And it was only then, when they were really falling apart, that he'd kill them.
17:55So, give Detective Inspector Hugh Miller a little credit. The things he's seen would give us all nightmares.
18:01By all accounts, Hugh became totally obsessed with catching him.
18:06Every day for months, he would appear at press conferences, saying how close he was.
18:11But as time went by, the bodies just kept piling up, and Miller just looked more and more stressed.
18:17A year into the case, Hugh suddenly announces that he's done it.
18:21He's caught him.
18:22Only for his prime suspect, Declan Reed, to be totally innocent.
18:28Meanwhile, each time the killer committed his heinous crimes, he would send Hugh another letter.
18:34Each one ending with the same sign-off.
18:37Catch you later, Detective.
18:40Miller was demoted from the case, and the Ripton stalker was never found.
18:44I still can't believe it. It's just the worst.
18:57It was a lovely funeral, though.
19:00Listen, I ordered you a little something on prime the other day.
19:03I can't have you moping around the house anymore, Hugh.
19:06Your backside's wearing out the sofa.
19:08I do please beg your pardon.
19:16Go and enjoy your round. You deserve it.
19:19That's an order, Captain.
19:21Bye.
19:22Thanks, Prof.
19:22Bye.
19:23Bye.
19:24Bye.
19:25Bye.
19:26Bye.
19:27Bye.
19:28Bye.
19:29Bye.
19:30Bye.
19:31Bye.
19:32Bye.
19:33Bye.
19:34Bye.
19:35Bye.
19:36Bye.
19:37Bye.
19:38Bye.
19:39Bye.
19:40Bye.
19:41Bye.
19:42Bye.
19:43Bye.
19:44Bye.
19:45Bye.
19:46Bye.
19:47Bye.
19:48Bye.
19:49Bye.
19:50Bye.
19:51Bye.
20:22The President mentioned the name of the Amos is the commander,
20:35this is the commander, which is the commander,
20:40which is the commander, which is in charge of the commander,
20:48the commander, which is the commander,
20:50Hey, new neighbour.
21:11That's me, Patrick.
21:14Liz, you're not moving this all on your own, are you?
21:18Oh, take no time.
21:21No Mrs. Patrick, doubt.
21:24Just me. I'm enough.
21:28I could give you a hand.
21:30No, I don't want you getting all dirty and...
21:34No, I don't mind. I like getting hot and sweaty.
21:38Me too. Just not over some boxes.
21:43I'm going to enjoy having you around.
21:45Oh, my God, he's so fit.
21:52Runs a repair shop so it knows what to do with his hands.
21:56Hey, you.
21:57Oh, hi.
21:59And he is 100% single, so...
22:02Hi, hi. Sorry. Hi, Liz.
22:04Yeah.
22:04Yeah, just lusting after the new neighbour already, aren't you?
22:08Yeah.
22:08We'll be lovers by the end of the week.
22:11No, I'm serious.
22:12Come on, I need an affair to save my marriage.
22:15Explain that to me.
22:17Steve's lost all interest.
22:19Seriously, last week I came down completely naked,
22:23sat next to him, didn't look up once.
22:26Oh, dear.
22:26How long were you sitting there naked?
22:28Half an hour.
22:30I was like, it's frozen.
22:34Went downstairs, got in the bath, and...
22:36washed my hair.
22:40Oh, thank you.
22:42All right, love.
22:44Hi, Hugh.
22:48There you are.
22:53It's Patrick.
22:54I've just moved in opposite.
22:56Oh.
22:58Hugh, right?
22:59Yeah.
23:00Yeah, Stephen Paul sent me.
23:02Said it was a book club at yours.
23:04You'd need rescue.
23:04Oh, yeah.
23:05God bless you.
23:06We're all off to the pub.
23:08It's really good to meet you.
23:10And you?
23:11How are you settling in?
23:13Well, I can't find the cattle in all.
23:15All my trousers have disappeared.
23:17So there's real money in fixing junk, right?
23:20Old clogs and stuff.
23:21More than you'd imagine.
23:23And I get to pick my own hours.
23:25Shit.
23:25I should do that.
23:27Look, I'll keep chasing the next deal,
23:28always hustling for work.
23:29This guy's got it sorted.
23:31Especially compared to you, Paolo.
23:32You hate your job.
23:34I don't hate it.
23:35I just don't know what I'm doing.
23:38I spend the whole day with my files around waiting to get sacked.
23:41Actually, actually, the only guy who's got a sorted is Hugh.
23:44No.
23:44Retired at 55.
23:4550 sodding five.
23:47I don't think you go every time and there's anything to brag about, really.
23:50Are you joking?
23:51You literally get to play golf all day.
23:52Yeah, it's weird, though.
23:53I don't think I'm really ready.
23:55Yeah, I get that.
23:56But you're still smarter than all of us.
23:59That's not difficult, is it?
24:01Hey, why don't you do that thing for Patrick?
24:03Oh, yeah.
24:03You'll love this.
24:04Go on.
24:05Oh, 10%, I don't think Patrick wants to...
24:07Come on, do it.
24:08Come on, do it.
24:09It's brilliant.
24:10Okay, okay, right.
24:11From the doorway going left, there is a 20-something guy in a grey jumper with his red-headed girlfriend.
24:18He's drinking a pint of bitter, she's drinking gin and time.
24:21Then on the next table, there's three lads, all wearing jeans and white trainers.
24:25They're drinking pints of stout.
24:27Then halfway up the bar, you've got two young women, one's brunette, one's a blonde, and they're drinking diet coats.
24:34But they're topping them up with rum from a hit flask.
24:36They've got a table, a table next to the bar, you've got a really bored 30-something married couple.
24:43And they're on the phones, of course.
24:44And he's drinking bitter, and she's on her fourth fogger, which in itself tells its own story.
24:50He could clear the whole room.
24:52You're right, Hugh, you're wasted in retirement.
24:55Oh, I think anyone can do it with a blue practice.
24:57No, you're unique.
24:58I think she'd be burnt at the stake for witchcraft.
25:00You worry who'll discover your secrets?
25:02I haven't got any.
25:04We've all got them.
25:05No.
25:05St. Stephen of Ripton, that's me.
25:07Holy martyr, tortured for his good deeds by an insanely demanding and attention-seeking wife.
25:13What, she's a bit forward?
25:15Mate, it's never-ending.
25:17Last week, she came downstairs buck naked just to get a reaction.
25:21I had to pretend I didn't notice.
25:23Come on, drink up.
25:24My round.
25:25See you guys.
25:26Night, Paolo.
25:27Hey.
25:28Right.
25:29This is me.
25:30Evening, gents.
25:31Night, night.
25:31Yeah, night, Stevie.
25:32Yeah.
25:32I like them.
25:36Yeah.
25:37Yeah, we're lucky to have such good neighbours.
25:41I mean, I meant it when I said you are wasted in retirement.
25:46You need a new challenge.
25:48No, I think I'm okay for a bit.
25:53You know, I suppose I probably should slow down, really, shouldn't I?
25:58Yeah.
25:59Really?
26:02Okay.
26:04Well, this was fun.
26:07Yeah.
26:07Yeah, it was.
26:08Wasn't it?
26:09Yeah, I mean, we should do it again.
26:10All right.
26:13Catch you later.
26:20Catch you later.
26:24Catch you later, detective.
26:25Each one ending with the same sign of it.
26:28Catch you later, detective.
26:29Catch you later, detective.
26:59Catch you later, detective.
27:19Morning.

31:44you you've just moved in so quickly I mean house was barely on the market was it?
31:47I mean, the house was barely on the market, was it?
31:50You love your questions, don't you?
31:52Well, once a copper.
31:55When did you move to Ripton?
31:56Right, if we are playing to any questions, then I should get a turn.
32:00Uh, all right.
32:02Why did you move into our street?
32:03I like the neighbourhood.
32:05And how...
32:05No, it's my turn.
32:09What's the most important thing in the world to you?
32:13Alice.
32:15My wife.
32:17Uh, have you ever been married?
32:19No.
32:20Why did you ask me to play golf with you today?
32:21I just wanted to get to know you.
32:22I mean, it seems to me you know a lot about me already.
32:25Then why would you think that?
32:26I don't know, it's just a hunch.
32:27Am I wrong?
32:29No.
32:32No, you're not.
32:36I'm not being honest with you.
32:37I, uh...
32:38I googled you.
32:41I read all about that terrible case.
32:43I am so sorry, Hugh.
32:45Must be awful living with that.
32:49Not knowing where he is, who he is, what he's doing.
32:55And that would drive me crazy.
32:58What's your question?
33:00Are you over it yet?
33:03I...
33:03God, I've got it for years ago.
33:06Really?
33:07My turn.
33:08Why do you care?
33:16I guess we're the same, you and me.
33:22Just wanting to get to know each other.
33:24Actually, now I'm milk a woman.
33:53Well, it's finally happened.
33:56First time this guy hasn't been up at six in, what, 30 years?
34:01Yeah, well, I didn't sleep very well, did I?
34:04What are you doing here?
34:05Shouldn't you be at work?
34:07It's Saturday.
34:08Silly.
34:09Man, you are so retired.
34:12Do you want a coffee?
34:14No, I think I'm going to get changed.
34:16I'm in the way.
34:17No, no, of course you're not, of course you're not.
34:19Look at this, Hugh.
34:20Yes.
34:22Next weekend.
34:24Hopefully, we'll get the whole street together.
34:27Yeah, I've talked to Liz.
34:28She's very keen.
34:29Oh, best she is.
34:30All the decorating should be done by then.
34:33Can't wait to see what you've done with the place.
34:36Yeah, me too.
34:37Great.
34:38It's a date.
34:39Hey, my favorite couple.
35:00Come in.
35:01Hi.
35:02Wow.
35:02There you go.
35:08So glad you're here.
35:10Yes.
35:14Oh, this is amazing.
35:16Alex, over here.
35:19Yeah.
35:20Yeah.
35:21A little bit.
35:22You all right?
35:23You're in a little version.
35:25Yeah.
35:25Yeah.
35:26Ah, of course.
35:27Cheers.
35:29See you've got most of the street here, haven't you?
35:31Yeah.
35:32Even Susan Barnes, look, there she is.
35:35She doesn't normally go anywhere.
35:37How does she do that?
35:38I have to play host.
35:40See you in a bit.
35:41Yeah.
35:41Cheers.
35:41Cheers.
35:41Cheers.
35:41Get another bottle of fizz out of the fridge and just keep Liz's glass full.
36:08If I go over there, honestly, I don't think I'd make it back with my trousers on.
36:11Huh.
36:12Cheers.
36:13I have to play with my trousers.
36:15I have to play with my shoulders.
36:15You make me feel so high.
36:17Maybe.
36:19Come on.
36:21Say what to do.
36:23Let's get it.
36:25Get it.
36:26Yeah.
36:26I got this feeling.
36:28I can't deny.
36:30I got this feeling.
36:33I can't deny.
36:34That's right.
36:35I got this feeling.
36:38Ah.
36:38I got this feeling.
36:41I can't do that, that's right, let's get into this, let's go.
37:11I can't do that.
37:41I was just, er...
37:46I don't believe you.
37:48No, Alice, it just happened to be...
37:50No, no, we're not doing this here.
37:52What, I swear I'm just...
37:53We will go home right this minute and you can explain it to me there.
37:56No, it was...
37:56Not here!
38:11What is the matter with you?
38:22Well, it's just being a bit nosy, there's no idea to get out of shape about it.
38:27No.
38:28What is it?
38:29I mean, it's all right for you, isn't it?
38:35I mean, you go to work.
38:37Stop lying!
38:39What is going on?
38:40Alice, nothing is going on!
38:42I'm okay.
38:51Okay.
38:54I think I know that I...
38:56I know for certain...
38:58And I swear to you, Alice...
39:02That Patrick...
39:04Is the Ripton Stalker.
39:07Now, he's been waiting for an opportunity all these years, and now that I'm retired, he's coming to get me.
39:14Oh, my God.
39:15And he called out to me on the first night that we met, and when I heard it, it was like I was back there, like I was back in the warehouse.
39:24What did he say?
39:25And it's definitely him, I recognise his voice.
39:28What did he say?
39:30Catch you later.
39:33But everybody says that.
39:35Yeah, not in the way he said it, he was taunting me.
39:39I thought we were past this.
39:40It's him!
39:42Because he said, catch you later!
39:44No, see, because it's not just me, is it?
39:45Because Liz said that when he bought the house, he bought it without a viewing.
39:49I mean, that is not normal, is it?
39:51Is it?
39:52And then there's Frank's death.
39:55Which the police are dealing with.
39:56Yeah, but they're just lazy.
39:58Oh, my God, you're doing it again?
40:03All the same things.
40:04But it's him, Alice!
40:07Hugh, you had a nervous breakdown.
40:11Our daughter barely speaks to us.
40:13And you nearly crushed our marriage.
40:16And you want to do that to us again.
40:18But, Alice, this is...
40:19I made you promise me that you wouldn't drag me back into that madness again.
40:25We won't survive if you do.
40:28Do you not remember what you were like?
40:32Obsessing.
40:33Not sleeping.
40:35Imagining clues that didn't exist.
40:38No, no.
40:39This is wrong.
40:41You're just chasing shadows.
40:43Because your life is suddenly empty.
40:46And you're looking to fill it.
40:49And you're going back down that road.
40:52You're going to jump off a cliff.
40:55I know you are.
40:56And I'm not going to jump with you.
40:59Not this time.
41:01Bath.
41:04Oh, God, Alice.
41:07No.
41:09I don't want to go back there again.
41:12Oh, my God.
41:14I'm so sorry.
41:16I'm sorry, Alice.
41:17Alice, Alice, I'm sorry.
41:19I'm sorry.
41:20I'll do better.
41:21I'll try.
41:22I'll try.
41:22I will.
41:22I'll promise.
41:24I'm so sorry.
41:26I love you.
41:27I love you.
41:27I love you.
41:52Harry downstairs said you wanted this post-mortem report.
42:00Oh, yeah.
42:02Some random.
42:03It's just a suicide, I think.
42:05Yeah?
42:06Lives on the same road as Hugh Miller.
42:09Miller?
42:11Call that speech he gave.
42:14Whole room was just cringing.
42:17Doesn't make any sense.
42:21You're just, you're begging him, like, stop talking.
42:24It's got to be a needle.
42:25I just, I wanted him to disappear.
42:28Stop making a fool of himself, you know?
42:30I don't know.
43:00I don't know.
43:00No, no.
43:07Oh, oh.
43:12Yeah.
43:16Oh, oh, oh, oh.
43:28Hi, Ruth. I'm sorry I've not been into...
43:32I'd be dead if it wasn't for you. You stopped him.
43:35Let him get away.
43:36Ruth, this is Patrick, Patrick. This is Ruth.
43:38Do you think it's him?
43:39Hi, Dad.
43:40I'll go.
43:41Is that you?
43:42That is my daughter.
43:43Did you see Ruth today?
43:45I just need to know if it's him or not.
43:47What about me?
43:48He's never thought about us. Not once.
43:51Come on, Dad.
43:52I mean, you are slowly heading towards the exit.
43:54You love your games and so do you.
43:57I love you. So stop this while you still can.
44:01You live for the hunt.
44:27Like, do you forget?
44:31Pick one, please.
44:33I final it on my schedule for you.
44:35See you again.
44:37I marron.
44:39Let's get back.
44:40I have no idea.
44:41What are you doing?
44:42Whatever you do, buddy.
44:43We never miss it.
44:45We'll be honest.
44:46I can drive for you glass, man!
44:48gioved톱 and
