00:00Good morning America! First Sunday prayer. Thousands of people gathering to see the
00:08first American pope, Leo XIV, deliver the traditional prayer from the balcony of St.
00:14Peter's Basilica. Spending his first full day meeting the faithful. His message to the college
00:26cardinals and the stunning image, praying in front of the tomb of his predecessor, Pope
00:32Francis. Plus, what's to come in the days ahead? Tariff breakthrough? President Trump's positive
00:39messages following trade war talks between American and Chinese officials as he prepares
00:44for his first major foreign visit of his second term. What's on the agenda for his Mideast trip?
00:51Delays and cancellations as Newark International Airport deals with three radar outages
00:56in just two weeks. The latest on the arrival and departure boards and what the Trump administration
01:02plans to do about it. Trial watch. The jury expected to be seated in Sean Diddy Combs'
01:09sex trafficking trial. The first witnesses who could testify. Plus, Karen Reed's murder trial.
01:15Looking ahead to this week's testimony, our ABC News legal contributor weighs in on the cases.
01:20NBA playoffs. The big wins overnight on both coasts. Oh, my goodness. Anthony Edwards scrapes the sky.
01:29Eric White launches a three-pointer. That's good. As teams look to advance in the conference semifinals.
01:36A lonely day.
01:37And bonded for life. The mother-daughter duo that shares a nursing degree, but something much more.
01:45Our children don't understand when parents say, I will die for you. That's the amount of love that I
01:52have for her. Making this Mother's Day extra special. Live from ABC News in New York, this is
02:00Good Morning America. Good morning, America. Happy Sunday to you. Happy Mother's Day to you.
02:07A special Mother's Day to our mamas, Miss Tammy, Sharon, and Lourdes, and our mother-in-laws. Yes, and all the
02:14moms out there. Happy Mother's Day to you. Oh, thank you guys. Thank you so much. It was a special day. A special,
02:19special day. We also have a lot of news on this Sunday, including signs of a possible breakthrough in
02:24President Trump's trade war. The president saying great progress was made between American and Chinese
02:30officials holding tariff talks this weekend in Switzerland. We're going to have that. But we do begin
02:34today in the Vatican. Vatican City, Pope Leo XIV delivering his first Sunday prayer as leader of
02:40the Roman Catholic Church. ABC's Terry Moran is there. Terry, good morning to you.
02:46Good morning, Whit. It's a festive scene here at St. Peter's Square, the Pope's first Sunday prayer,
02:51as you said. In the early days of every papacy, tell a story that the whole world wants to hear. Who is
02:57the new Holy Father? For Pope Leo so far, it's a story of both continuity and change.
03:03A special moment in St. Peter's Square this morning. Pope Leo XIV leading the first Sunday
03:11prayer of his papacy. Thousands came to pray with him. On Saturday, there was another first for Pope
03:17Leo, his first trip outside the Vatican. A joyful, impromptu visit to this ancient Augustinian shrine
03:2330 miles south of Rome. The Pope arrived in a minivan and greeted the faithful. Inside, he prayed at the
03:30sanctuary. And then there was this stirring image. At the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, Pope Leo
03:37prayed at the tomb of his predecessor, Pope Francis. Earlier in the day, the Pope made clear how much
03:42the legacy of Francis means to him at his first business meeting since his election on Thursday
03:47with the cardinals. Pope Leo praised Francis' reform efforts in the church, declaring that he
03:54intends to continue the late Pope's work, saying, let us take up this precious legacy and continue on
04:00the journey, inspired by the same hope that is born of faith. Back in the U.S., there's joy and love for
04:07the first American pope. And many who knew him in his early years are sharing their memories. Like
04:12Sister Therese Del Genio, an 84-year-old nun who taught the man who would become Pope Leo XIV nearly four
04:19decades ago. He's not just local and concerned about the United States. He has a global heart
04:25and a global vision. And there have been celebrations all around the world, in countries where the Pope
04:31has already touched so many lives, like Chiclau, Peru, where he spent much of his career as a missionary,
04:36teacher, and bishop. Overnight, our Matt Rivers attended a special outdoor mass held in the Pope's
04:43honor at the Chiclau Cathedral. So it's not every day that you have a church service outside, and it's certainly not
04:49every day that you get applause during a church service. But then again, it's not every day that the guy who used to be
04:54archbishop here is now their pope. This morning's prayer is just the start of a big week for Pope Leo. He's
05:01scheduled to meet with the world press for the first time tomorrow, and his inauguration mass is set to take place
05:07next Sunday. In his Sunday prayers here, Pope Leo prayed for peace in the world, in Gaza, in Ukraine,
05:15and between India and Pakistan. And next Sunday, at that installation mass, he'll have a chance to speak
05:20directly to many world leaders who are expected to attend. Janae? All right, Terry, thank you for your
05:26reporting. Back here at home now to President Trump's trip to the Middle East. He leaves tomorrow for a
05:31journey that will take him to three countries, but no plans to visit Israel. ABC News senior White House
05:36correspondent, Celia Wang, is in Washington with those details. Good morning, Selena.
05:40Hey, good morning, Janae. President Trump heads to the Middle East on Monday for the first major
05:44foreign trip of his second term, stopping in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. Now, Saudi Arabia was
05:50also Trump's first foreign trip during his first term, and he's once again breaking tradition by skipping
05:55over America's closest neighbors. This signals the close political and economic ties between the U.S.
06:02and Saudi Arabia under the Trump administration. And the Gulf has played a critical role in mediating
06:08conflicts around the world, including the war in Ukraine, with Saudi Arabia serving as a venue
06:13for separate U.S. talks with both Ukraine and Russia. Now, this trip also comes as the Trump
06:19administration tries to make progress over the war in Gaza and as the U.S. starts another round of
06:24nuclear talks with Iran. President Trump has threatened to dismantle Iran's nuclear program
06:29with military force if diplomacy fails, Janae. And Selena, there are new developments in the push
06:35for a ceasefire in Ukraine. Yeah, that's right. For the first time, the Trump administration and
06:41European allies are coming together and presenting an ultimatum to Putin. They're demanding that Russia's
06:46Putin accept a 30-day ceasefire that starts on Monday, or they'll increase sanctions on Russia and
06:52increase military support to Ukraine. Overnight, Putin said he's willing to start negotiations with
06:58Ukraine starting on May 15th in Istanbul, but he essentially dismissed the 30-day ceasefire,
07:03though these talks would still be significant. In response, Zelensky said Ukraine is ready to meet,
07:09but reiterated calls for a ceasefire to start on Monday. Gio? And let's hope that ceasefire comes
07:14soon. All right, Selena, thank you so much. Now to President Trump indicating a breakthrough at the
07:19tariff talks going on in Switzerland this weekend between American and Chinese officials.
07:23ABC's Alex Pache has the latest now from Washington. Good morning, Alex.
07:27Good morning, Gio. Yeah, the White House is signaling optimism ahead of this latest round of talks
07:33between the U.S. and China. President Trump reacting to Saturday's initial discussion between
07:38the two countries, posting on social media, great progress made, adding that it was a total reset.
07:43This after he floated out the idea of cutting tariffs on Chinese goods nearly in half to 80%.
07:49Now, these negotiations rest in the hands of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent,
07:53and the stakes to work something out are incredibly high. The U.S. currently has 145%
07:59tariff rate on Chinese imports. Beijing retaliated with its own 125% tariff on many American goods.
08:06And U.S. retailers have warned for weeks that these tariffs could start impacting the price of goods
08:11here at home. And this morning, the Southern California Marine Exchange confirms to ABC News
08:16that the first containers from China, subject to that 145% tariff, have arrived at the ports of Los
08:22Angeles and Long Beach. Now, amid the tariff turmoil, the ports have seen a 40% decrease in ships docked
08:29there since the end of April. Many businesses have simply postponed or canceled their orders. And in the
08:35last 24 hours, only two container ships have left China en route for either L.A. or Long Beach,
08:42which that is a steep departure from the norm.
08:46All right, Alex Brasche for us. Thank you so much. We appreciate it. Let's bring in ABC's Jay O'Brien
08:50for more on all of this. Jay, it's good to see you in New York in the studio.
08:53Good to be here.
08:54We dragged you off Capitol Hill for one morning only. So we saw there President Trump touting
08:58progress in these trade talks with China, but there's so much at stake here. And we also know
09:03that there are potential deals in the works with other countries, too.
09:06Yeah. And China is going to be the hardest trade deal to strike here. Remember, there's been this
09:09war of words back and forth between Washington and Beijing. The highest tariffs are on China. So
09:15how much progress is happening is still very much unclear. But you're right. There are dozens of
09:19other countries that this administration has got to strike trade deals with.
09:22The Secretary of the Treasury said this week that they were making progress with those,
09:26that they could maybe announce trade deals as early as just a few days ago. But the only deal
09:30they announced was with the U.K. So just as we don't really know the status of these China talks
09:35fully, we also don't know what's going on with these dozens of other countries. And remember,
09:39with those other countries, not China, the president paused most tariffs on those to carry out these
09:45trade talks. But that pause expires in early July. And we know that businesses,
09:50the markets are hanging on the administration's every word. So we'll watch closely to see how
09:53that plays out. While we have you, though, Jay, we know that you also track Congress very closely
09:57in a big week ahead on issues for millions of Americans, taxes and Medicaid. What can we expect?
10:03This week, House Republicans are going to make decisions that will impact the health care
10:06of millions of Americans, particularly those that rely on Medicaid, those who are lower income or
10:12those who have disabilities. Remember, House Republicans are putting together this massive bill,
10:17all of Donald Trump's campaign promises in one bill, and they want to cut $2 trillion out of
10:22the federal government to do that. And they say, Republicans, that that's going to involve
10:26changes to Medicaid. Now, Democrats warn that means hundreds of thousands potentially without
10:31insurance. But Republicans have never really spelled out exactly what changes they're going to make.
10:36That ends this week when they start to write that bill, Whit.
10:39And we know you'll be following it all, Jay O'Brien. It's great to see you in New York.
10:42Thank you. And be sure to watch a special edition of This Week. Later this morning,
10:46Martha Raddatz is live from the Vatican. She's interviewing the Archbishop of Chicago
10:51and the president of Villanova University. That's all coming up on This Week. Janae?
10:56All right, Whit. Now to the earthquake that rattled parts of the southeast Saturday,
11:00an unusually strong one for the region. ABC's Ike Adjachi explains tens of thousands of people
11:05felt this one, Ike, and many people were talking about it.
11:08Yeah, that's right. Good morning, Janae. What you're hearing and watching is, in fact,
11:12an earthquake, 4.1 magnitude, striking eastern Tennessee. And it was felt all throughout the
11:17southeastern United States. Now, just after 9 a.m. Saturday, over 35,000 people reporting
11:23feeling of the quake across the state in Asheville, Tennessee, and as far away as Atlanta, Georgia,
11:28and Greenville, South Carolina. Social media timelines crammed with stories of rattling windows
11:33and swaying ceiling fans. One Atlanta resident describing their entire house shaking for nearly
11:3910 seconds. Now, the epicenter of Saturday's earthquake is in Greenback, Tennessee, a town
11:44close to Knoxville. And according to the United States Geological Survey, that very area is in a
11:49seismically active zone, but it's still rare to see earthquakes above a 4 magnitude. In fact,
11:55in the last 75 years, only 15 earthquakes with a 4 or higher magnitude have hit an 150-mile radius.
12:03And if you go way back to 1811 and 1812, that area was hit by a series of massive quakes estimated
12:09between 7 and 8 magnitudes. But given the infrequency of earthquakes in the area, officials
12:14can't really say when the next big earthquake will hit. But in the coming week, they're forecasting at
12:20least a 23 percent chance of another magnitude 3 or higher tremor occurring. Guys? Yeah, just
12:26unbelievable to see that there in Tennessee. Thank you, Ike. All right, we are going to turn now to the
12:30air travel slowdown at Newark International Airport following three radar outages over the
12:35last two weeks. Take a look at the latest numbers here. We did the math. And since Friday morning
12:40alone, 300 flights have been canceled at Newark, 654 delayed. Those numbers, of course, could grow
12:46today. But here's how we got here, okay? Early Friday morning, radar screens went black for about
12:5190 seconds, leaving air traffic controllers in the dark about planes in the air. Something similar
12:56happened on April 28th and 30th. ATC computer screens went dark for at least a minute. And
13:01sources say that also prevented controllers from talking to planes, all of it causing a short ground
13:06stop at Newark. After it all happened, several controllers, they went on medical leave, calling
13:11the experience a traumatic event. The control center was already short on controllers. So that is an issue
13:18that's been ongoing, only got worse because of this. And it is alarming to so many travelers. It's
13:23all the talk in my neighborhood groups out in New Jersey. Yeah, absolutely. So what's next in
13:28actually addressing the problem? So we do know that many of these officials, airline officials,
13:33they're going to be meeting with the FAA on Wednesday to talk about possibly cutting the number
13:38of flights in and out of Newark. So that's the short-term fix. But this past week, the Department
13:43of Transportation said it will overhaul the entire air traffic control system nationally, right? Because
13:48all of the airports need help, saying that will help dramatically. But that could take
13:52four years. So we're talking about a long road ahead here. And lots of delays along the way.
13:58Yeah, absolutely. Thank you for that, Gio. We turn now to a spokesperson for the Department of
14:02Homeland Security saying there will likely be more arrests coming after yesterday's protests
14:07against the Trump administration's deportation policies outside of an ICE detention center in Newark,
14:13New Jersey. A scuffle happening after the arrest and release of Newark Mayor Ross Baraka,
14:18who was charged with criminal trespassing. This video of the arrest was released by the Trump
14:23administration. Interim U.S. attorney Alina Haba claiming Mayor Ross Baraka ignored multiple
14:29warnings to leave, calling his actions grandstanding. New Jersey's governor, though, calling the arrest
14:35unjust, saying he is outraged. And Mayor Baraka saying we did nothing wrong and urge everyone to go
14:41home. Well, now to rising cancer rates in people under 50 in the U.S. A new study highlighting
14:47increases in more than a dozen types of cancer. Emergency medical physician Dr. Stephanie Widmer
14:52joins us now to talk about this. Dr. Widmer, thanks for being here. Happy Mother's Day to you.
14:57Break down for us what this study shows. So this study, in a nutshell, it essentially showed
15:02rising incidents of over a dozen different types of cancer occurring in young adults or adults under
15:10the age of 50. The study looked at over 20 million cases that have been diagnosed from the year 2010
15:17to the year 2019 and found that approximately 14 of these different types of cancers are increasing,
15:24especially in young women. Women accounted for 63 percent of the cases that were in this study.
15:31And the cancers that appear, the early onset cancers that appear to be rising in women are breast cancer,
15:37thyroid cancer, and melanoma. And in men, it appears that colorectal cancer, testicular cancer,
15:42and melanoma are rising. So what is also concerning is that mortality rates for some of these different
15:49types of cancers, in particular uterine cancer and colorectal cancer, also appear to be uptrending.
15:55So I want to be clear, this isn't just about detecting it more. It is about more diagnosis. We're seeing more of those.
16:02So that's really the question here. Why is this happening? What is pushing these numbers? What is
16:08causing these trends? There are a couple different schools of thought. Could this be because of better
16:12imaging modalities and better detection? Or is there something else that's going on? Diet,
16:17environmental factors. So really getting down to the why is what is going to be the next big focus
16:23here. So what do young Americans and doctors need to know? What can they do?
16:27So there are things that are already happening. So for example, breast cancer screening,
16:33colorectal screening, the age at which that should start happening has already been adjusted
16:37appropriately. But there's always something that can be done. Take care of yourself. Eat a healthy,
16:42well-balanced diet. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol intake. And just because you're young and
16:48otherwise healthy, do not ignore symptoms. If you don't feel right, contact your doctor, get checked out.
16:54Always pay attention and be watching your health.
16:56Thank you so much. Thank you. Just so scary. All of it. Thank you so much for that.
17:00All right. Now to the NBA playoffs and the Celtics handing the Knicks a defeat on New York's home
17:06court. ABC's Ashan Singh, more on that as well as the Western Conference semifinals. Oh,
17:11my Warriors, Ashan. What happened? I know. Morning, guys. And happy Mother's Day. It was an intense day
17:16of playoff basketball yesterday with some pretty big implications on the line, starting with the
17:21Minnesota Timberwolves, trying to take advantage of the Steph Curry-less Golden State Warriors.
17:25And right here in New York with the Knicks and Madison Square Garden, playing host to the
17:29Boston Celtics.
17:31Tatum fires away. Answers right back.
17:34Overnight in Madison Square Garden, a sigh of relief for defending champion Boston Celtics.
17:39Got it. Justin Tatum from downtown.
17:42Bouncing back after being down in a 2-0 hole to the New York Knicks.
17:46Derek White launches a three-pointer. That's good.
17:49After record-breaking struggles at the three-point line in games one and two, the long ball finally
17:54falling for Boston as they hit 50% of the 43-pointers they took.
17:58Hartford lines up his three-pointer. That's good.
18:01The Knicks, meanwhile, shooting just 20% from beyond the yard.
18:04Pritchard lines up three-pointer. Got it.
18:07Boston Sixth Man of the Year, Peyton Pritchard, posting a career-high 23 points in the effort.
18:13But with the Celtics still down 2-1 in the series, their head coach, Joe Missoula, says
18:18this is all a part of the process.
18:20We're on the path of trying to go after greatness, and you don't get to dictate the test that's
18:25in front of you. All you get to dictate is how you approach it and how you respond to it.
18:28And in the Western Conference, the Minnesota Timberwolves, just too much for the short-handed
18:32Golden State Warriors, who are playing without their star, Steph Curry.
18:36Randall beats Edwards for the slam.
18:40It was a sparring match between Minnesota's Anthony Edwards and the Warriors' Jimmy Butler,
18:44who both notched over 30 points.
18:47Oh my goodness! Anthony Edwards scrapes the sky!
18:50But between a triple-double from Wolves star Julius Randall and some Warriors foul trouble,
18:55Minnesota was able to hang on and secure a 2-1 lead.
18:59You can't never get too comfortable, man. This is a championship D&A team.
19:02They got a championship D&A staff, head coach, and this is what they do, man.
19:05So I gotta be ready. We gotta be ready at all times.
19:08And guys, game four of both of those matchups will be played on Monday on ESPN,
19:13starting with the Knicks and Celtics at 7.30 Eastern, with the Wolves and Warriors to follow.
19:17Not to mention, there are some great games slated for today.
19:21I can't wait. It's playoff basketball. My favorite time of year, guys.
19:25Yes, there's so much to look forward to, Ashton.
19:27Thank you so much. And still coming up here on Good Morning America,
19:30lots more basketball ahead. ESPN's Malika Andrews joins us
19:34and weighs in on the next games for the teams going for the win.
19:37And we're doing a legal deep dive into the Sean Diddy Combs case
19:40as jury selection is expected to wind up Monday in federal court.
19:44And a Mother's Day story about a truly special mother-daughter bond.
19:48We'll be right back here on GMA on a Sunday morning.
19:51And welcome back to GMA. On this Mother's Day, we're giving a shout-out to all of the mothers
20:05who gave us our great staff right here at GMA.
20:08And of course, we want to extend that love to all of the mothers out there right now.
20:13Coming up, we're going to introduce you to some amazing moms,
20:16including an incredible story of real selfless love. I promise you're going to want to see that.
20:21I love all these parents.
20:22That is so sweet. But first, we're going to get to the top headlines that we're following right now.
20:26Happening right now, growing tensions between India and Pakistan.
20:30Both sides agreeing to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
20:33But shortly after the news, there were reports of explosions with both sides accusing the other of breaking the deal.
20:39For now, it seems to be holding.
20:41President Trump posting on social media that the agreement emerged after a long night of talks between the U.S., India, and Pakistan.
20:48Also right now, the jockey who rode sovereignty to the finish line at last weekend's Kentucky Derby has been suspended and fined.
20:55Junior Alvarado was ordered a two-day suspension and has to pay $62,000 for striking sovereignty too many times with a riding crop during their winning run.
21:07And after 11 seasons in the NFL, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr says he's retiring.
21:13The 34-year-old four-time pro bowler has been dealing with a shoulder injury.
21:17The Saints seem to know that this might be coming, selecting former Louisville quarterback Tyler Shuck with their second-round pick at the NFL draft.
21:25And the other headline is how his name is pronounced.
21:28It is Shuck, even though it's not spelled that, but a lot of people talk about that.
21:32Glad you noted that.
21:33And we do start this half hour with a court case rewind.
21:37Sean Diddy Combs facing sex trafficking and racketeering charges.
21:41A jury is set to be seated on Monday.
21:43And the retrial of Karen Reed, who's accused of running down her Boston police officer boyfriend and leaving him to die in the snow, both have pleaded not guilty.
21:51We want to bring in ABC News legal contributor Brian Buckmeyer with what's happened so far and what to expect this week.
21:56Brian, thanks for being here.
21:58Let's start with the Combs case.
22:00You were in the courtroom on Friday.
22:01We thought that the jury was supposed to be seated then.
22:03It was moved to Monday.
22:04What happened?
22:05What can we expect?
22:07Yeah.
22:07So on Thursday night, the judge said that they had 45 prospective jurors.
22:11And Friday was supposed to whittle it down to that magic number of 12 jurors and six alternates.
22:15But one of the 45 actually got, for lack of a better term, cold feet.
22:19And so they don't want to be on the case anymore.
22:21And so everyone involved was really worried that if they picked a final 12 on Friday come Monday morning, that might happen again.
22:28And if that happens on the day of trial and you're losing jurors, then it doesn't happen.
22:32So the idea was bring all 43 people on Monday morning.
22:36The process should only take about 10 to 20 minutes.
22:39And on 8.30 in the morning, hopefully we'll have 12 jurors and six alternates.
22:42And we're going to start with opening statements soon after.
22:44Something tells me there might be more twists and turns, too, as we're just getting started with this trial.
22:48We did mention opening statements expected on Monday.
22:51Also, we are expecting to hear from ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura this week.
22:55We should note that there's this, the video that was obtained by CNN reportedly showing Diddy kicking, dragging Ventura, who was his girlfriend at the time.
23:04Diddy later issuing an apology.
23:05A judge ruled that it can be shown in court.
23:09But Combs' defense team argues that the video was manipulated.
23:13CNN denies that.
23:14All right.
23:14So we had to get all of that legal stuff out of the way there.
23:17So why is that video so important to her testimony?
23:19So, first and foremost, Cassie is expected to be the third witness to testify.
23:24So it could be Monday, it could be Tuesday.
23:26But it's so important because it goes to the heart of both arguments for the prosecution and the defense.
23:30For the prosecution, they're saying that this video is an example of multiple instances of assault and sexual battery against Cassie by Sean Combs as a part of this criminal enterprise, that racketeering allegation they have here, and the sex trafficking, that he used coercion or threats thereof to trafficker across state lines.
23:47But for Sean Combs' defense, they're saying, and it came out on Friday, a little hint of their defense, that he and Cassie were in, again, this is the defense's argument, not mine, that he and Cassie were in a very tumultuous and domestic violence-based relationship, that they both hit each other.
24:02And that the incident they're going to see in this video and they might see in testimony are isolated incidents of domestic abuse, but not for the purposes of trafficking.
24:10So that video is going to be very important for the interpretation of the jury as to what this case is really about.
24:15Just an unreal case.
24:16Let's turn to the Karen retries.
24:18Janae noted she's accused of killing her boyfriend by hitting him with a car.
24:21So much happening in court.
24:23What's the latest now?
24:23So the latest is that we are continuing on with investigators who are a part of this case.
24:28A sergeant who supervised the infamous now former sergeant, former state trooper, sorry, Michael Proctor, he was testifying about what was happening in this investigation, what was found.
24:38And a few things stood out in this cross-examination on Friday.
24:41Text messages between Karen Reed and Brian Higgins, an ATF officer.
24:45And the defense seemed to insinuate that there was some sort of relationship going on to try to create an alternative suspect, that there's another reason why John O'Keefe might have been killed other than what the prosecution is putting forward.
24:56Also, this video outside of John O'Keefe's home where you can see about 5.07 in the morning, Karen Reed takes her SUV and appears to make contact with John O'Keefe's vehicle.
25:06And that's important because it's all about this broken taillight.
25:09Did the taillight get broken when it hit John O'Keefe or did it happen here?
25:13And then, of course, the dog, Chloe, from the Alberts home, who the defense is saying was part of this scuffle.
25:19Well, that dog was rehomed shortly thereafter this incident, and there seems to be nothing in the investigation.
25:24And those are some key points the defense really pointed out in the cross-examination.
25:27So much going on.
25:28All right, Brian Buckmeyer, thank you so much as always.
25:30We appreciate you.
25:31My pleasure.
25:31More on the NBA playoffs as teams look to advance the next rounds here.
25:35Joining us this morning from Los Angeles is ESPN's Malika Andrews.
25:39Malika, good morning to you.
25:40Always great to have you.
25:41Some big games overnight.
25:44Let's jump right in here.
25:45Start with the Knicks and the Celtics.
25:46The Celtics getting a huge win at the Garden.
25:49How'd they look, and what should we expect on Monday?
25:52Yeah, they looked pretty good.
25:54A huge difference here, guys, is that through the first two games, the Boston Celtics,
25:58they made only 25 of the 103-pointers that they took.
26:0225% on a test that is not going to pass, and the Boston Celtics did not pass.
26:07Now, in Game 3, the big difference, they made 23s.
26:11That is absolutely a staple of their game.
26:13Now, the only question here, Whit, is whether or not a sleeping giant has awoke here.
26:20What I cannot tell quite yet, but we will know very quickly in Game 4,
26:25is whether or not the Boston Celtics, this was just a matter of time for them.
26:29This is a team, they built 20-point leads in the first two games.
26:32It was the same sort of story here in Game 3.
26:35They built that 20-point lead.
26:36But the difference is in Games 1 and 2, they gave up those leads.
26:40There was late-game heroics from Jalen Brunson.
26:42That did not happen here in Game 3.
26:44It feels to me like if the Boston Celtics are able to take Game 4,
26:48they are going to be able to take this series.
26:51There's just something about the heart of a champion.
26:53And, Malika, overnight, the Timberwolves winning a thrilling game against the Warriors.
26:57What stuck out to you about that game?
26:59Yeah, you know what, Gio?
27:01It's the fact that the Golden State Warriors are still searching for a way to win without Steph Curry.
27:07And it's getting increasingly difficult to see a path for them to do so.
27:11Essentially, Steph Curry, he suffered a hamstring injury in Game 1.
27:14The Golden State Warriors were still able to split in Minnesota.
27:17And now they just need to win one of the next two games to give Steph a chance to come back.
27:22That couldn't happen any earlier than Game 6.
27:24With that monster dunk you saw right there from Anthony Edwards, that was part of 28 second-half points that Anthony Edwards had.
27:31This game, it felt like it had all the markings of one of the Golden State Warriors they absolutely needed to win.
27:37It was tough.
27:38It was in the mud.
27:39It was low scoring.
27:40And then Draymond Green fouled out.
27:42They already were without Steph Curry.
27:43Kavon Looney fouled out of the game as well.
27:45They just did not have enough.
27:47If they aren't able to win these types of close, kind of gutted-out games without Steph Curry, I worry that the Timberwolves are going to be able to run away with this one.
27:55Especially behind a young superstar like Anthony Edwards.
27:58And Malika, real quick, looking ahead to some Game 4s today.
28:01We've got the Thunder versus the Nuggets.
28:03Denver leads the series 2-1.
28:04How's that looking to you?
28:06Yeah.
28:07So what did I say about the heart of a champion, right, Janay?
28:09And you absolutely know about this.
28:11For the Denver Nuggets, they're playing a young Oklahoma City team that is certainly incredibly talented.
28:17But it comes back to the role players who have been there before.
28:22And that's been Aaron Gordon.
28:23He had the game-winning three in Game 1.
28:26And what you're seeing right there, that is the game-tying three that ended up sending this Game 3 to overtime.
28:33Russell Westbrook, who you're watching right now, was able to sort of chip in as well.
28:37And so when these games have gotten close, even though this has been billed as the battles of the MVPs here,
28:43in Shea Gildas Alexander and Nikola Jokic, it's been the others who have stepped up.
28:47So there's certainly some exciting games that are going down today.
28:49Absolutely.
28:50Malika, as always, thank you so much.
28:52Of course, you can catch the Oklahoma City Thunder versus the Denver Nuggets at 3.30 Eastern right here on ABC.
28:57And coming up on Good Morning America, a very special Mother's Day story.
29:01Stay with us.
29:07All right, we're back now on GMN, one of the sweetest Mother's Day stories that we've seen
29:12as we celebrate Mom's special day.
29:14ABC's Morgan Norwood is here with this mother-daughter duo, and they have a special bond.
29:18Oh, so special.
29:19You've got to hear this.
29:20For Ambriel Brown, her mom didn't just give her the gift of life once, but twice.
29:25First as her mother, and then years later as her kidney donor.
29:28What happened next?
29:29A journey neither of them expected.
29:31Take a look.
29:32It was a moment Ambriel Brown and Nyjah Butler will never forget, both graduating nursing
29:40school together, mother and daughter.
29:43It definitely was a dream come true.
29:45But that special day almost didn't happen.
29:48In 2016, daughter Ambriel was diagnosed with the rare kidney disease, ultimately leading
29:54to kidney failure.
29:55And while waiting for a transplant, she was put on dialysis, a grueling process that caused
30:00her legs to swell to the point where she couldn't move.
30:03All of this while taking prerequisite courses for nursing school.
30:07It was tough because I always felt drained, but I had to keep myself in some type of normalcy.
30:13I was devastated.
30:15I saw her struggle to try to keep me happy, struggle to try to say, Mom, I'm okay, when I
30:22knew she wasn't.
30:23It was so difficult, she had to stop her schooling.
30:26But after five years of waiting, everything changed.
30:29Ambriel finally finding the perfect match.
30:33I called my mom, excited, in tears.
30:36I just got this call that they had a kidney for me.
30:41And she said, I know, it's me.
30:44And I just looked in disbelief.
30:48I kept it a secret because I just didn't want her hope to get up.
30:52Our children don't understand when parents say, I will die for you.
30:57That's the amount of love that I have for her.
31:00Ambriel returning to school, this time with a partner.
31:04Her mom, Nyjah, deciding to get her registered nurse's license, too.
31:08And for 16 months, the two were inseparable.
31:11Nursing school is very stressful, exhausting, but it was fun.
31:18We competed a little bit with our grades, but of course she won.
31:23Matching degrees and a match that saved a life.
31:27And I was able to start over, like brand new.
31:29And most people don't get a second chance like that.
31:32So she blessed me with life twice.
31:36The sweetest story.
31:38They are just getting started.
31:39They have plans to open their own business together.
31:41Love to see it.
31:42And happy Mother's Day to them and also to you today.
31:44Thank you so much.
31:45That is such a sweet story for bringing that to us, Morgan.
31:54Oh, we love this part of the morning here.
31:56You're looking at more pictures of our GMA family paying tribute to their moms in a very public way.
32:02All of these special moments.
32:03Our team behind the scenes and their moms.
32:06You can never thank the mothers enough for everything that they do for us every single day.
32:11We'd like to wish all of the moms out there a very happy Mother's Day.
32:15We do.
32:15And we want to wish our Janae a very mother of three.
32:19Mother of three.
32:20Not of us.
32:22That's true.
32:23But a sister to us.
32:25A mother to those kids.
32:27Oh, my gosh.
32:28Being a mom is the greatest joy.
32:29So happy Mother's Day to all the mamas out there.
32:32And thank you for starting your day with us.
32:34Thank you, guys.
32:34Happy Mother's Day, everybody.
32:35You can catch more weekend news coverage over on ABC News Live.
