00:00Russian President Vladimir Putin has firmly rejected the unconditional 30-day ceasefire ultimatum issued by Ukraine's Western allies during their visit to Kiev.
00:21And the governments of Iran and the United States held on Sunday in the city of Muscat in Oman, the fourth round of talks on the Iranian nuclear plant.
00:30And Palestinian authorities warned that people in the Gaza Strip are dying of thirst as the Israeli regime keeps restricting access to the vital liquid.
00:45Hello, welcome to Front of the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Jesús Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:51We'll begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:00Russian President Vladimir Putin has firmly rejected the unconditional 30-day ceasefire ultimatum issued by Ukraine's Western allies during their visit to Kiev.
01:11The European leaders threaten tougher sanctions on Russia if it refuses to the ceasefire.
01:16Putin criticized the Western demands as ultimatums delivered with rude statements, emphasizing Russia's readiness for serious negotiations.
01:23Clinton Spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated that Russia would consider ceasefire proposals only if Western military support to Ukraine ceases.
01:32This reflects Moscow's long-held position that peace must be negotiated without preconditions,
01:37and that Western sanctions and arms deliveries complicate prospects for a genuine ceasefire.
01:42And in this sense, Russian President has proposed resuming direct peace talks with Ukraine on May 15th in Istanbul.
01:54Putin stressed that it was Kiev that halted the 2022 talks and extended the invitation to Ukraine to restart discussions aimed at eliminating the root causes of the conflict and achieving a long-standing stable peace.
02:06In this context, current spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is resistant to external pressure and that while Putin supports the idea of a ceasefire in principle,
02:15the recent Western proposal contains many unresolved questions.
02:19Russia to are a close-lead of the peace and that they are finalized.
02:27Despite everything, we propose the Kiev authorities resume the negotiations.
02:31They interrupted, at the end of 2022.
02:34To resume direct negotiations.
02:37And, I emphasize, without any preconditions.
02:40We propose to begin without delay next Thursday, May 15, in Istanbul, where they were held earlier, and where they were interrupted. We are committed to serious negotiations with Ukraine. Their purpose is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict, to establish a long-term, lasting peace for the historical perspective.
03:06We do not rule out that during these negotiations it will be possible to agree on some new truces, a new ceasefire.
03:17In this context, the Russian president says he plans to ask Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his help to facilitate the direct talks with Ukraine.
03:25Tomorrow we have a conversation with the president of Turkey, Mr Erdogan. I want to ask him to provide such an opportunity to hold negotiations in Turkey. I hope that he will confirm his desire to contribute to the search for peace in Ukraine.
03:44The 80th anniversary of the end of World War II was celebrated all over the world with the biggest ceremony held in Moscow, where the date is called Victory Day.
04:06Celebrations brought together generations in history and geography, where Russian citizens remembered their ancestors, while grandchildren, historic European figures, called for peace.
04:16Details from our special envoys, Yunus Suner from Moscow.
04:20The Soviet Union lost 27 million citizens in the Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany, and the fallen were present both on picture and in hearts on Moscow's streets on May 9.
04:32Today, for the 8th anniversary of the victory, for me, it is a great pride to be here, because all my great-grandfathers participated in the Great Patriotic War.
04:50They were all decorated with several orders, and I, as their great-granddaughter, with their eyes will see this incredible celebration.
04:56Russian citizens, remembering their grandfathers, were joined by others.
05:05Charles de Gaulle was the French general who led his countries fight against Germany in World War II, becoming the first head of provisional government in France after liberation from fascism.
05:16It's important for me to be here, as the grandson of Charles de Gaulle, to celebrate the end of the Second World War and the 80th birthday, also to remember and tell that Russia paid the heaviest tribute for the freedom of the world against the Nazis.
05:38Already a legion during the war, his grandfather became president later again, standing for a French policy independent from the U.S. during the Cold War.
05:49I'm also here to celebrate the Franco-Russian friendship. It was one of the pillars of the policy of my grandfather. It's important if you want to make peace.
06:00Another European guest in the celebrations was Alexander von Bismarck. He is the grand-nephew of Otto von Bismarck, who, as chancellor in late 19th century, united Germany.
06:18From a German perspective, this is the first time I witnessed May 9 here in Moscow, and that was very moving and emotional.
06:24I think we can provide the younger generation some insight, because we don't learn in school what that all means.
06:36This wasn't only the victory over the Nazis, it was also the victory for peace.
06:40His grandfather was chancellor between 1871 and 1890, dominating European politics with his policy of balance and his international congresses such as the Berlin Conference.
06:57The name Otto von Bismarck stands continent-wide famously for the merit of diplomacy.
07:03Russia has always told us to construct the European peace order together.
07:15But we ignored that.
07:16And now we face the consequences in the conflict in Ukraine.
07:20That was a fatal mistake.
07:21by this conflict here between the Ukraine and Russia.
07:25Moscow's Victory Day celebrations and humanity's desire for peace brought together families and memories over generations and borders.
07:34A truly historic May 9, 2025.

07:51Welcome back.
08:16The government of Iran and the United States held on Sunday in the city of Muscat, Inman,
08:20the 44th round of talks on the Iranian nuclear plan.
08:24Under Oman's mediation, the latest U.S.-Iran talks have receded without a clear solution to the conflict,
08:31as Iran assures that it will not give up its nuclear rights,
08:34while Washington has reiterated that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons,
08:38so its enrichment facilities must be dismantled.
08:40The latest gathering, headed by White House Special Envoy for the Middle East, Stephen Witkoff,
08:45and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakshi was addressed by the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman
08:51as difficult but useful to better understand each other's positions
08:55and to find reasonable and realistic ways to address differences.
08:58Precisely in this context, before the talks, the Iranian Foreign Minister provided statements
09:09assuring that a deal is possible if the U.S. stops with its unreasonable and unrealistic demands.
09:14We had more consultations in Tehran this morning and in this round we hope to reach a decisive point.
09:24As I have said many times before, if the intention is to ensure that the Islamic Republic of Iran
09:35does not have nuclear weapons,
09:39this is completely achievable and an agreement on this is certainly achievable.
09:43But if the U.S. has held a full reset in U.S.-China trade relations
10:02following the first day of talks between senior U.S. and Chinese officials in Geneva
10:06aimed at defusing a trade war sparked by his tariff rollout.
10:09The U.S. president praised the very good talks as a full reset negotiated
10:13in a friendly but constructive manner.
10:16Earlier, senior U.S. and Chinese officials concluded in the Swiss city
10:19the first day of talks aimed at reducing tensions that threatened to affect the global economy.
10:24In this context, Chinese Vice Premier Hilly Fung met for about eight hours
10:29with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Peasant and U.S. Trade Representative Jamie Sonn-Grier.
10:35In their first face-to-face meeting since the world's two largest economies,
10:38imposed tariffs were above 100%.
10:41It is important to highlight that tariffs imposed by Trump on China this year
10:45currently amount to 145% and cumulative U.S. duties on some Chinese products reached 245%.
11:08Palestinian authorities warned that people in the Gaza Strip are dying of thirst
11:16as the Israeli regime keeps restricting access to the vital liquid.
11:19In this regard, the Palestinian Water Authority issued an urgent humanitarian appeal
11:24alerting that 2.3 million residents are currently deprived of access to the minimum amount of water
11:28required for survival.
11:30Furthermore, in the appeal, the authority unveiled that water extraction in Gaza has declined by 80%
11:36since October 2023, while water consumption has dropped to 3 to 5 liters per person per day,
11:43far below the emergency minimum of 15 liters established by the World Health Organization.
11:48In this context, the body accused Israel of committing a systematic war crime by using thirst
11:54and starvation as tools of genocide.
12:02And also in Palestine, the Israeli occupation army intensified on Saturday its aggression
12:06by demolishing residential homes in Nur Shams refugee camp in northwestern West Bank.
12:12Syrian sources confirmed that the occupation forces detonated three homes in the Alman Shiyah neighborhood,
12:17bringing the total number of buildings destroyed by Israeli forces in the last week alone to 15.
12:23These demolitions are part of a wider systematic campaign by the occupation to erase entire neighborhoods
12:29within the camp as part of a plan announced 10 days ago to demolish 106 buildings in Nur Shams and Tulkaram.
12:37Refugee camps, this campaign has already begun a large-scale humanitarian crisis with more than 4,200
12:44Palestinian families forcibly displaced, while more than 400 houses have been completely crushed
12:50and another 2,573 have suffered damage.

13:33Uruguay regional and local elections move forward this Sunday.
13:37Polling stations open at 8 a.m. local time, with more than 2.7 million voters summoned to elect 19 governors,
13:43589 city councilors, 136 majors, and 544 municipal councilors.
13:49Likewise, 19 departmental intendancies were presented, 147 candidates for seven political parties.
13:55On the other hand, 1.9 million Uruguayans will be able to decide on the majors of 136 municipalities,
14:0211 more than in the elections of 2020.
14:11And in Venezuela, the electoral drill ahead of the regional and national elections of May 25 concluded positively.
14:17The National Electoral Council summoned citizens to participate in the democratic exercise with the objective of familiarizing voters with the system.
14:24This drill allowed the testing of the voting machines, checking the effectiveness of the transmission media,
14:30and evaluating the technical operation and logistics of the procedure.
14:33For this purpose, the National Electoral Council set up a total of 1,187 voting centers nationwide,
14:40with the intention of strengthening the democratic process in Venezuela.
14:52And Cubans remember the two visits that Father Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, made to the island.
15:00He visited Cubans prior to the Order of St. Augustine in 2011.
15:05Monsignor Emilio Arangurin, Bishop of Holguin, and other people who knew him, he was their testimony.
15:10Jordanius Rodriguez has the story.
15:16Two decades unite Fray Robert Francis Prevost, then Prior General of the Augustinian Order,
15:22with Monsignor Emilio Arangurin, Bishop of Holguin.
15:25According to him, during a visit to Rome in 2005, he met today's Pope Leo XIV.
15:34From there came the relationship of friendship, and I told him the need I had for priests in the diocese,
15:39and I told him how good it was that the Augustinians could come to the diocese.
15:43And truly the new Pope as a person is a very simple person, very natural.
15:56Father Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, visited the island on two occasions.
16:01He made two trips in April 2008 and February 2011 to Havana, Las Tunas and Holguin,
16:08among other provinces in eastern Cuba. When I saw him come out onto the balcony I was surprised,
16:16I bowed my head and prayed for him. Last year in Puerto Rico, at a meeting of the
16:25Latin American Bishop's Council, they exchanged views again, recalls Father Emilio.
16:34And there again we had the opportunity to greet each other and talk,
16:37and last year the bishops of the country and myself,
16:44went to Rome for an established visit and we already visited him in the dicastery and talked
16:49about Cuba. In the city of Puerto Padre, right in the province of Las Tunas,
16:59they remember him with great affection. The order of the Augustinians knows about the hospitality of
17:04these people. I am a humble simple person, just like the Pope, but it gave me a great feeling to
17:13know that today the Pope spent a night under the roof of my house sharing with me.
17:16A very wonderful and beautiful thing because God puts things in their place. Before going to sleep
17:28I asked him if he wanted to have coffee, and he told me a little bit.
17:31And then on the two balances in the front we talked for a while about the church and when I had been baptized.
17:43Certainly for me it was a very nice experience, because when you realize and hear the name of the Pope,
17:58and you hear the name and surname of the Cardinal and you realize it is the person you met at a
18:02certain moment of your life is very exciting after the order of St. Augustin was for about 16 years
18:10in our parish in the diocese of Holguin.
18:20I think that for the universal church, the fact that the Pope continues to have that Latin American
18:25imprint is a blessing. Especially His Holiness Leo XIV, who I really believe has been and is the ideal man
18:32that we believe by faith that the Holy Spirit has given us in this stage that is beginning now.
18:36Well, last night I sent him a message and first I said Holy Father and then I said Dear Brother.
18:55I sent him a text thanking him for the yes that he had given to the Lord, the yes that he had given to the church,
19:00and that this would provide the possibility for him to come again to a reality that he already knows.
19:06This is the affection that these Cubans profess for the missionary who one day walked the streets of Puerto Pedro
19:19and others in the east of the island.

19:36On Sunday, many countries around the world hold commemorative events to celebrate Mother's Day.
19:43On this day, relatives dedicate the day to their mothers to honor them and to thank them for the acts
19:48of love and care for their families. Yet not all countries celebrate Mother's Day on the same date,
19:52due to differences in culture and traditions. In the Americas, countries like Chile, Cuba, Venezuela,
19:57Colombia and Brazil have adopted the festivity on the second Sunday of May.
