Transcript
00:00So Newcastle United take one massive step towards Champions League qualification with a 2-0 win over Chelsea here at St. James's Park.
00:07It was always going to be a huge game coming here.
00:10The Champions League qualification wasn't going to be secured today but it certainly could have been lost or out of their hands had they lost the game.
00:16But Newcastle did what they needed to do. Performance wasn't the best anyhow we'll say as much today.
00:20They've performed a lot better in this season, a lot better in even bigger games this season.
00:25But all it was about was the three points today and they did that.
00:28They came into the game, it was a 12-card kickoff.
00:30Whether the fans would be up for it, whether St. James's Park could create that hostile atmosphere that they've done so well over the last few seasons.
00:36Especially when you think about PSG for example and games like that.
00:38But Newcastle went into the game really wanting to ride the momentum of the point they earned last week but also the crowd.
00:44Can they get the crowd behind them and can they start well? Of course they started well.
00:47Sandro Tonali within two minutes had put them 1-0 ahead.
00:49Jacob Murphy's beautiful cross. Just a bit of Bruno.
00:52Tonali was there to tackle. He did really well to be fair.
00:54Hit it in the ground over Sanchez to make sure he scored.
00:58So yeah within two minutes he got a 1-0 up.
01:00The crowd's volume lifted and the nerves settled.
01:03He also went into the game at the back five.
01:05There was a side change formation.
01:06Kieran Trippier out of the side.
01:08And Joe Willock out of the side.
01:10Anthony Gordon came in for him.
01:12And Sven Bottmann came over Kieran Trippier.
01:15And they went to a back five as I said.
01:16Murphy playing the right wing back on the right.
01:17Tino Livermanto left wing back on the left.
01:19And you did think would that work?
01:21It worked against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.
01:23But obviously a back five is always a big change.
01:26And it did work for the first half to be fair.
01:28Newcastle really good in the first half.
01:29I said they got the early goal.
01:30Could have had a couple more.
01:31Chelsea was sort of shrunk by the atmosphere a little bit.
01:34But they did alright.
01:35Who knows what happened if Sanderson didn't get that early goal.
01:37But it didn't matter as I said.
01:38Newcastle brilliant early on.
01:40And the game changer moment came.
01:41When Bottmann gets elbowed by Nicholas Jackson on half way.
01:44Initially giving us the yellow card.
01:46John Brook sent the 5-8 yard to go check.
01:47And it was a red card.
01:48It was a red card.
01:49Jackson made no attempt for the ball.
01:50He's only got eyes for Bottmann really.
01:52Yeah it was a silly decision from Jackson.
01:55And in that moment that was when Chelsea's hopes of turning it around really evaporated.
01:59And Newcastle had a really good ten minutes at the end of the finish off.
02:02I couldn't get that second goal.
02:03Heading the break one.
02:05Now I think a lot of people would have been happy.
02:06That's certainly the vast majority of the season's part would have been happy with that.
02:09But they wouldn't have been happy with their second half performance.
02:10Chelsea had really got themselves back into the game.
02:13They dominated the second half really.
02:14Newcastle looked comfortable without.
02:16Fairly comfortable at times I would say.
02:18Without really testing Chelsea too much.
02:20Now.
02:21Palmer had a shot which Pope saved easy.
02:22And to be fair Nick Pope made a couple of decent saves.
02:24But they didn't really.
02:25It wasn't one they were.
02:26They were battering on Newcastle's door.
02:27Of course.
02:28With 10 minutes you turned out to be.
02:29But it was edginess.
02:30And there was certainly edginess in St. James Park thinking.
02:31Oh Newcastle are going to let this slip.
02:33We all remember that game against Liverpool at the beginning of last season.
02:35Were they going to let it slip?
02:37But they didn't.
02:38They shifted to a back four.
02:39About ten minutes in the second half.
02:41Which really helped them.
02:42Murphy came up.
02:43Murphy moved up the right.
02:44Gordon came off a craft.
02:45And Lewis Miley came on to midfield.
02:47Sorry.
02:48Botman came off as well.
02:49So that shift to the back four really helped them.
02:51I think.
02:52It sort of helped the midfield battle.
02:54Because at half time Chelsea made a really stupid sub through fair end zone.
02:57Where I think got a spot on.
02:58He took Madaweke off.
02:59Put Rhys James on.
03:00Which allowed Cassido in the midfield.
03:01And for the first sort of 10-15 minutes.
03:03I was like no.
03:04Chelsea are really dominant in midfield.
03:06But they managed to number up.
03:08And they did just enough to repel them.
03:09And then at the end.
03:10Bruno Guimaraes.
03:11As he's so many times he's done.
03:12Then he got to know.
03:13He popped up with a big moment.
03:14We all remember the one against Brighton a few years ago.
03:16They wanted to celebrate a hundred times.
03:17But this time it was a deflected shot.
03:19But yeah.
03:20Celebrated by lifting the.
03:21The flag.
03:22Up his head.
03:23And yeah.
03:24That was the moment.
03:25He got to.
03:26And St James Park really started to believe that Champions League could be coming.
03:27As I said.
03:28It's not guaranteed yet.
03:29Erm.
03:30It's not guaranteed yet.
03:31But of course.
03:32It really is.
03:33A big step forward.
03:34And as I said.
03:35Performance wasn't the best.
03:36But who cares.
03:37They got the results.
03:38And that's all that matters.
03:39They'll go to the Emirates Stadium next week.
03:40They'll hold it in the win.
03:41Of course they could even secure Champions League football next week.
03:42But they'll know that all they have to do is do it on their home turf.
03:45Back here against Everton.
03:46In a couple of weeks time.
03:47And they'll guarantee it.
03:48But yeah.
03:49Performance not the best.
03:50Result that all matters.
03:51Newcastle United 2.
03:52Chelsea 0.
03:53And a huge step to Champions League football.
03:54It's so close now.
03:55Newcastle United can taste it.
03:56Newcastle United.
03:57say you're too aggressive.
03:58Newcastle United.
