00:00:00A long, very, very fast loop. The cars go away over a mile down to a long loop at the far end of the track, which we shall see in a moment.
00:00:06They then come back on another straight, a bit of a mile.
00:00:09Each straight is now halved by a chicane, which were artificial installations put in for the running of the Grand Prix here in 1970, 11 years ago.
00:00:18And just to slow the cars down as a result of Jim Clark's fatal accident a couple of years before that, when he went off in a Formula 2 race, went into the woods and was tragically killed.
00:00:27There go the cars moving away. They're in the stadium section now, which is the slow bit of the track.
00:00:31This is the third gear right-hand corner that they take after the start-finish line, which sends them out into the country through the forests of this south-western Germany area.
00:00:45Long, long straight. The cars get pretty well up to full speed here. They go up to the top gear.
00:00:50Now, of course, they're just doing their warming up lap. There's a very slight curve as they go, but that's flat out.
00:00:55That's not a corner for them. And they'll be driving. They're warming up. They see them weaving about to warm their tyres up as they go.
00:01:02The Ferraris, of course, here they are arriving at the first chicane.
00:01:05These chicanes are wide open and pretty fast. They're facing at well over 100 miles an hour, probably 120 miles an hour.
00:01:10But they do just break up the straight and reduce the amount of slipstreaming that's available.
00:01:15And go further out into the country, down the straight. And they come to the big, fast loop that you see.
00:01:22You see the dot where the leader is now. This corner at the end of the straight is very, very nearly flat out, taken in top gear.
00:01:29And they've reached something like 180 miles an hour plus going into it.
00:01:34They'll take it probably at 170. And then back the other way, still in top gear, disappearing down that other straight.
00:01:41And at the far end of the straight, you can see they're in fact going to turn left into the other chicane.
00:01:46And then it goes around. They're just approaching the second chicane on the course.
00:01:50The Ferraris may be an interesting joker in the pack in that on the first lap, they've proved that they got off the line pretty well for a turbocharged car.
00:02:00And they've got this extra power. And I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them storming past the Williamses that are in front of them up the first straight.
00:02:08And then, of course, they're going to prove a big problem to repass if they can do that.
00:02:11They qualified reasonably well, but their chassis is still not that good.
00:02:15And therefore, whoever they get in front of, it tends to be a problem for them.
00:02:18And they're coming down into the stadium section now. They've come all the way down the final straight.
00:02:23They break down into third gear here, turning right into the stadium.
00:02:28Short little straight. We shall see as we follow one of the Ligiers around there.
00:02:33And then they come down to second gear half in probably the slowest corner on the circuit.
00:02:39They're now, you see the wonderful grandstands in the background, absolutely full, 100,000 people.
00:02:43And they, the people in these grandstand seats can see the whole of the stadium section, which is a marvelous spectacle for the cars.
00:02:50They lose them as they go out into the country, but they've got, they can, as I say, see all the important bit of the track, really.
00:02:57Leader coming, coming around now, slow right-hander, little double right-hander.
00:03:01And then into, there comes the runner, into the final corner, onto the start-finish line, where he will draw up onto the grid.
00:03:10As usual, the cars will form up on the grid into their positions.
00:03:14When they're all in position and not before, the starter will apply the red light.
00:03:19And then it's a minimum of six seconds, a maximum of ten, before he throws it to green, and away they go.
00:03:2624 drivers from 14 countries, five types of engine, four types of tyre, the two Renaults of Prost-Narnu on the front row,
00:03:34Reutemann and Jones on the second row, Piroli and Piquet on the third row.
00:03:3845 laps of the 4.2-mile circuit, 189.9 miles to go, as we await that red light to be followed by the green,
00:03:47and then the dash out of this motodrome into the countryside.
00:03:51All the engines working.
00:03:56Waiting for that light. There's a yellow light there as well, in case anything goes wrong for the first time ever at a Grand Prix,
00:04:01just to avoid what we saw happen at Belgium.
00:04:04Seems to be holding them a long time.
00:04:07Everybody in position.
00:04:11Safety cars behind. Can the Renaults pull away?
00:04:17And it's 15 Prost who does it, followed by number two, Carlos Reutemann, the world championship leader.
00:04:3245 laps to go, and one of the Renaults pulling that enormous weight, something like 46 gallons of fuel,
00:04:38as opposed to 38, in the lead.
00:04:40Alain Prost, followed by Reutemann, the Ferrari of Pironi is sneaking through, as they come up to the first chicane.
00:04:48125 miles an hour, third gear, and one of the Renaults clear.
00:04:53Prost clear, the man who thought he'd win the British Grand Prix, followed by Reutemann, followed by Pironi, followed by Rennie Arnoux.
00:04:59Everybody away cleanly, we can see in front of us, as they swoop down to one of the fastest curves in motor racing,
00:05:07the fifth gear, 150 mile an hour ost curve, out in the forest, and the crowds all the way around the circuit.
00:05:14Well, a good clean start, no problems at all, everybody away.
00:05:20The Renaults predictably a little bit slow off the line, and the Ferraris, just as I suggested earlier, have indeed come up and made their mark.
00:05:27Pironi's come storming through into third place.
00:05:30There goes the Renault, Reutemann going through the chicane, Pironi in third place.
00:05:34And Villeneuve, you see, up there, in with the pack a bit, and if he can get a good run down the straight, he'll be moving up.
00:05:40He was having an attack coming up the first straight, but looked to be a little bit boxed in.
00:05:44The field's still all clear.
00:05:50Coming round to the stadium for the first time, a huge roar from the crowd, seeing the Renaults have monies to pull away.
00:05:56But Prost has got behind him, Carlos Reutemann, the world championship leader, GDA Pironi.
00:06:01Behind Pironi.
00:06:04Alan Jones, the world champion.
00:06:08And Arnoux has vanished to the back of the pack.
00:06:11Something has happened to René Arnoux already, and though Prost is leading, as we come up to the end of the first lap,
00:06:17with Alan Prost leading from Carlos Reutemann, leading with GDA Pironi.
00:06:22René Arnoux has dropped to the back of the pack, and the order is Prost.
00:06:28Reutemann, Pironi, Jones, the beat, as René Arnoux sadly,
00:06:33after only 4.2 miles, makes his way into the pit.
00:06:37James Hunt.
00:06:38Yes, great shame to lose René Arnoux so early. Don't know what the problem is.
00:06:42Let's have a look and see if we can just work out what they're going to do to his car.
00:06:46The mechanic's descending upon it.
00:06:48They're doing a tyre change, which is routine in a pit stop, and they will deal with whatever other problem that he has.
00:06:54He didn't appear to have a puncture or anything, but they don't appear at the same time to be doing anything else to his car.
00:07:00Well, that must remain a little bit of a mystery for the moment.
00:07:04Quite amazing, James, because the Renault that was in trouble this morning was the Prost-Renault that had trouble with its turbos.
00:07:10Arnoux back in, and one of the Ferraris is pulling off.
00:07:13And now it's Didier Pironi, who was lying in third place.
00:07:16So two of the turbo-powered cars, who are expected to do so well in this German Grand Prix,
00:07:22are out of the hunt already, as Alan Prost leads from Carlos Reutemann,
00:07:26and that will mean that Alan Jones, the world champion, should be third.
00:07:35And so drama in the very first five miles of the German Grand Prix.
00:07:41189.9 miles to go, and yet already two of the favourites out of this race,
00:07:46and everything down to young Alan Prost, the man who was once a McLaren driver, James.
00:07:50Yes, Alan Jones would be very, very relieved to see Villeneuve as Pironi out of his way in the Ferrari,
00:07:57because he was already losing ground to his team-mate Reutemann, and to Prost in the lead.
00:08:04And there's Jacques Lafitte, who's come storming through the field from a relatively mediocre grip position.
00:08:10He took Pironi and saved him on the first lap, and he's having a bit of a stormy race,
00:08:14but Pique is right behind him and probably attacking him again.
00:08:17Yes, James, the end of lap two, and it's both Reutemann, Jones, Lafitte, and Pique.
00:08:27And John Watson moving quietly up the field.
00:08:32And Pique about to take Lafitte.
00:08:35Pique showing no sound as it has passed Lafitte, and Pique will now be in fourth position.
00:08:40So the first three men in the championship, Reutemann, Jones, and Pique are all in the first four,
00:08:47as we see Nelson Pique swing the bram around the chicane, going away from the Talbot Liget of Jacques Lafitte,
00:08:53chasing after the two men who are his greatest championship rivals,
00:08:56the two men from the Tag Williams team in the side-year laylands, Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann.
00:09:01But still, as you see in that picture, Alan Prost in the turbo Renault,
00:09:05the man carrying an enormous fuel load, nearly ten gallons more,
00:09:09because four-fifths of this circuit, believe it or not, is flat out.
00:09:13One of the hardest-hottest circuits in motor racing,
00:09:16but Alan Prost reveling in it as he sweeps into the second chicane,
00:09:21and Reutemann Jones, I am sure, James, will be content to sit there and wait
00:09:25for a few minutes to see what happens to the second Renault.
00:09:27Yes, Jones has already seen, apparently, he appears to be hauling them in a bit.
00:09:32I think he's moved up since he got a clear run when the Ferrari went out.
00:09:36But, of course, the problem for both Williams drivers is going to be what to do about Alan Prost,
00:09:42because the Renault is quicker down the straight, has more power.
00:09:45The old problem that we mention every weekend now, it seems, or every other weekend,
00:09:49there is Didier Peroni walking back from his abandoned Ferrari.
00:09:54He looked a bit smoky and nasty when he stopped.
00:09:57He'll be very disappointed.
00:10:00And so they come round, they order drone, to the end of the third lap,
00:10:05just over 12 miles gone,
00:10:06and it's Crost,
00:10:08Reutemann,
00:10:09Jones,
00:10:10Piquet,
00:10:11Lapite,
00:10:13Vilner,
00:10:13and John Watson is lying in 8th position.
00:10:20As Carlos Reutemann certainly seems to be closing on Alan Prost,
00:10:25as it's three down in fast back straight.
00:10:28John Watson has dropped back in that lap, back into 12th position.
00:10:42Peroni out already,
00:10:44Arnoux at the back of the field,
00:10:45but this man, Alan Prost,
00:10:47seemingly smoothly ahead,
00:10:49full load of fuel,
00:10:50past that straight Ferrari.
00:10:51What a strange position for a car to be in on the track,
00:10:54followed by the two Sadio Leylands,
00:10:56of Carlos Reutemann
00:10:57and Alan Jones,
00:10:58with Piquet having pulled ahead
00:11:00of Jacques Lapite
00:11:01and Gilles Villeneuve
00:11:04in a 6th position.
00:11:14So the fourth lap
00:11:16of this 45-lap German Grand Prix,
00:11:21and as we learnt at Silverstone,
00:11:22anything can happen.
00:11:23Will this be a race of attrition?
00:11:25It's a very, very hot day indeed,
00:11:27very humid,
00:11:28doesn't always suit the turbos,
00:11:30but at the moment,
00:11:31no problems at all for Alan Prost.
00:11:36Interesting fact,
00:11:36the drivers were all complaining
00:11:39about how bumpy the surface is in the chicanes.
00:11:42The cars are run
00:11:43with very, very stiff suspension these days
00:11:44to keep them close to the ground
00:11:46so they can get as much suction effect
00:11:48in due to the fact
00:11:49that they can no longer have their sliding skirt.
00:11:52They want to be close to the ground
00:11:53and the bumps in the chicanes
00:11:55are giving the drivers real difficulties.
00:11:57They're so bumpy,
00:11:58they can hardly see it,
00:11:59shaking their eyeballs
00:12:00about in their head
00:12:00and you sometimes get so much vibration
00:12:03you can get blurred vision
00:12:04from that.
00:12:06That looks like Jacques Lafitte to me.
00:12:08I can't quite see the number on it.
00:12:10Yes, that's Jacques Lafitte's car.
00:12:11He's chasing Nelson Piquet,
00:12:13but after getting past him
00:12:15on the first lap,
00:12:16Piquet seems to have established himself.
00:12:18There goes the leader,
00:12:19Alan Prost,
00:12:21with Reutemann and Jones,
00:12:22and Jones is now caught
00:12:23right up to his team mate,
00:12:24Carlos Reutemann.
00:12:25Now this presents an interesting spectacle
00:12:28from the point of view of team tactics.
00:12:30Carlos Reutemann is leading the world championship
00:12:32by some 17 points,
00:12:34but he is still officially the number two driver
00:12:36in the team.
00:12:37And I spoke to one or two of the team members
00:12:40this morning,
00:12:40and although he's still officially number two driver
00:12:43and therefore should let Alan Jones pass
00:12:45in the event that Jones is in position
00:12:47to come past,
00:12:48it's a problem.
00:12:51Somebody going into the pits there,
00:12:52I can't quite see who it is.
00:12:54It's Salazar into the pits
00:12:56in the end sign.
00:12:59As I was saying about these,
00:13:00and there is Jones having a go
00:13:01at his team mate,
00:13:02Carlos Reutemann.
00:13:03They're not allowed to fight each other,
00:13:05and he's got through
00:13:06into second place.
00:13:08Alan Jones,
00:13:08who's been so unlucky this year,
00:13:10he's driven really well,
00:13:12very aggressively.
00:13:13He made an unfortunate mistake
00:13:14in the Spanish Grand Prix,
00:13:15which blotted his copybook a bit there,
00:13:18but otherwise he's been afflicted
00:13:19by very bad luck all the season.
00:13:21Let's hope his car can hold together today,
00:13:23and he's now in position
00:13:24to set about the unenviable task
00:13:27of catching and then
00:13:29with more difficulty getting past
00:13:31Alan Prost's Renault.
00:13:45There's Nelson Fico,
00:13:47he's at the back of his four-car bunch,
00:13:49there are the four cars,
00:13:50and Alan Jones is right behind Prost,
00:13:53but he just hasn't got the power
00:13:55to even attack him.
00:13:56If he's going to have a go,
00:13:58can he do it into the cicada?
00:13:59He's getting alongside,
00:14:01but he hasn't got the power.
00:14:02I think if he's going to pass Prost,
00:14:04he's going to have to do
00:14:05some sort of big door-die effort
00:14:07in the stadium
00:14:07when he can get really close,
00:14:10but I don't envy him the problem.
00:14:13So it's a four-car race,
00:14:14we've got the three world championship leaders
00:14:17up there in the bunch,
00:14:19and today's race, I think,
00:14:21will be very, very critical
00:14:22as a pointer
00:14:23to which way the championship is going.
00:14:25P.K. or Jones
00:14:28is going to have to get
00:14:29a jolly good score today.
00:14:30Whoops!
00:14:30Oh!
00:14:31And Alan Prost,
00:14:32I don't think,
00:14:33saw Jones moving over behind him then,
00:14:35and he's now trying to block
00:14:36the inside line,
00:14:37and he's driving a little bit nautily
00:14:38by weaving on the straight.
00:14:40That is not what's considered
00:14:42to be acceptable practice,
00:14:44but he was moving over to the left
00:14:47to protect his inside line.
00:14:48Now this is where Jones
00:14:49has got to get really close to him.
00:14:50I don't think he'll be able
00:14:51to take him into the stadium,
00:14:52but he may be able to outbrake him
00:14:54into one of the tight corners
00:14:55in the stadium.
00:14:56He's having a go on the entry,
00:14:57but he's not close enough.
00:15:04Lap seven then,
00:15:06and Alan Jones deciding
00:15:07not to wait to see
00:15:08if the turbo breaks up,
00:15:09to take him as he comes
00:15:10into this autodrome,
00:15:10knowing that he's got
00:15:12a heavy load there,
00:15:14knowing that if that car
00:15:16gets a big lead
00:15:17and he gets lighter,
00:15:18he'll have to move
00:15:19heaven and earth to pass him,
00:15:20but Jones really pressing
00:15:21this young man.
00:15:22Drove a season for McLaren
00:15:23last year, Alain Frost.
00:15:24Won, of course,
00:15:25the French Grand Prix,
00:15:26the stop one,
00:15:26but at the end of lap eight,
00:15:28Alain Frost,
00:15:29pressured all the way
00:15:30by the world champion,
00:15:31the man who won here
00:15:32two years ago,
00:15:33leaves the race
00:15:34from Alan Jones,
00:15:35followed by Reutemann,
00:15:36followed by Piquet,
00:15:38followed by Lafitte
00:15:39and Tambay,
00:15:40John Watson is 16,
00:15:41and Britain's
00:15:42Michael Mantle is 15,
00:15:43but Arnau is weaving
00:15:45everywhere as
00:15:45John's comes in.
00:15:46James, this really is
00:15:47some strange driving,
00:15:49isn't it?
00:15:49Yes, well,
00:15:50it's all right
00:15:50so long as Frost
00:15:52has got some clear air
00:15:53in front of him,
00:15:54which he doesn't
00:15:55did in fact have there.
00:15:56He's just sort of
00:15:57making Arnau follow his
00:15:58eye,
00:15:59trying to throw the toe,
00:16:00but it doesn't really work
00:16:01because obviously
00:16:02if he can drive
00:16:02in a weave,
00:16:04pattern up the track,
00:16:05so can the guys
00:16:05following him
00:16:06because of course
00:16:06Jones obviously
00:16:07wants to sit
00:16:08in his draft,
00:16:10in his slipstream,
00:16:11to take the air,
00:16:12to take the hole
00:16:14in the air
00:16:14made by Frost's car,
00:16:16which will give him
00:16:17some more speed,
00:16:18but of course
00:16:18not enough still
00:16:19to stay with the
00:16:20superior power
00:16:21of the turbocharged
00:16:23Renault.
00:16:23Jones closing up again
00:16:24around the long
00:16:25fast sweep
00:16:26at the end of the
00:16:26straight.
00:16:27He's moving out
00:16:28to have a look,
00:16:29but I just don't think
00:16:30he's getting closer,
00:16:31but he is very close
00:16:32this time,
00:16:32but it'll have to be
00:16:33a superhuman effort.
00:16:34No, still not close
00:16:36enough.
00:16:37Frost is controlling
00:16:39everything pretty well
00:16:40from the front.
00:16:40He's keeping it
00:16:41reasonably cool,
00:16:42and Jones this time
00:16:43is certainly not
00:16:44close enough to
00:16:45attack.
00:16:47I gather in excitement
00:16:48we called Alan Prost
00:16:49our new by mistake.
00:16:51Apologies to Alan Prost
00:16:52who in his second
00:16:52full year of Formula
00:16:53One racing is holding
00:16:54off not only the
00:16:55world champion,
00:16:56but the world
00:16:56championship leader.
00:16:57The V6 Renault Turbo,
00:16:59at least 530 horsepower,
00:17:01some people would say
00:17:02550.
00:17:04The man who had to
00:17:05choose between being
00:17:06a soccer player
00:17:07and a racing driver,
00:17:08and perhaps at this
00:17:09moment Alan Jones
00:17:10wished he decided
00:17:11to play football.
00:17:11into the autodrome
00:17:13at the end of lap 8.
00:17:15Alan Prost
00:17:16still holding off
00:17:17Alan Jones,
00:17:18but you can see
00:17:18how close and you
00:17:19can see how
00:17:20almost ragged
00:17:21Alan Jones was there.
00:17:22How hard he was
00:17:23trying.
00:17:24Less than a second
00:17:25in between them,
00:17:26James.
00:17:27That's right.
00:17:27Keep an eye on this
00:17:28battle behind
00:17:29because Nelson Piquet
00:17:30is now on
00:17:31Reutemann's tail
00:17:32and is beginning
00:17:33to look a bit
00:17:33menacing behind him
00:17:34and the problem
00:17:34is probably the
00:17:36quickest car,
00:17:37Ford engine car,
00:17:39the aerodynamics
00:17:40of his quickest car
00:17:41on the straight
00:17:41and he will be
00:17:42trying to get a bit
00:17:43of a draft
00:17:43from Reutemann
00:17:44and slip out
00:17:45into the chicane
00:17:46and I wouldn't be
00:17:46surprised,
00:17:47though he's not
00:17:47close enough this
00:17:48time,
00:17:49but he'll be trying
00:17:49to get right under
00:17:50Reutemann's wing
00:17:51out of the corners
00:17:52onto one of these
00:17:53fast straights,
00:17:54then he's going to
00:17:54throw.
00:17:55He's closer now,
00:17:56but,
00:17:57though he didn't
00:17:59get out of that
00:18:00chicane
00:18:00absolutely spot on.
00:18:05Frost still pulling
00:18:06away on every
00:18:06straight,
00:18:07giving Jones a lot
00:18:08of problems.
00:18:08Jones is attacking
00:18:10hard at the moment.
00:18:11I suspect he'll try
00:18:12for another couple
00:18:13of laps maybe
00:18:14and then he may
00:18:15just give it a rest
00:18:16for a little while
00:18:17because when you're
00:18:18driving this close
00:18:19to another car,
00:18:19it requires a
00:18:20superhuman effort
00:18:21and it's very
00:18:21difficult to drive
00:18:22the whole length
00:18:22of a Grand Prix
00:18:23trying so hard.
00:18:24Jones is pulling
00:18:25out again,
00:18:25but I just don't
00:18:26think he's going
00:18:27to be close enough.
00:18:27No,
00:18:27he has to tuck
00:18:28back in.
00:18:30He's got a big
00:18:31problem on his
00:18:32hands.
00:18:33He's in that
00:18:34awful position
00:18:35where he can
00:18:36nearly do it
00:18:37each time,
00:18:37so it's not a
00:18:38hopeless case,
00:18:39but there's no way
00:18:40you can keep
00:18:40this sort of
00:18:41pressure up.
00:18:41He may have to
00:18:42take a breather
00:18:42in a little while
00:18:43and try and see
00:18:45if Frost's car
00:18:46will break.
00:18:47It's very warm
00:18:48and humid here
00:18:48at Hockenheim,
00:18:49which in the
00:18:50normal way is a
00:18:51disadvantage
00:18:51relatively to the
00:18:53turbocharged cars.
00:18:54Their reliability
00:18:55tends to become
00:18:57more suspect
00:18:59when it's hot
00:19:00and the humidity
00:19:02probably won't
00:19:02help and Piquet
00:19:03has got through.
00:19:04Piquet has passed
00:19:05Carlos Reutemann
00:19:06into third place.
00:19:08Yes,
00:19:09the end of lap
00:19:10nine and Piquet
00:19:11has passed
00:19:12Carlos Reutemann
00:19:12so Alan Jones
00:19:13is now going
00:19:14half the roof
00:19:14as we see
00:19:15Frost,
00:19:16followed by Jones,
00:19:17followed by Piquet,
00:19:19followed by
00:19:19Carlos Reutemann
00:19:20and these four men
00:19:21have set such a
00:19:22pace that they've
00:19:23cleared away from
00:19:24everyone else.
00:19:24Lafitte and
00:19:25Tambay are still
00:19:26not in sight.
00:19:27Villeneuve seven
00:19:27for a back eight
00:19:28for Crazy ninth
00:19:29and Andretti ten.
00:19:36Lafitte in the
00:19:38Talbot Ligier
00:19:39lying fifth
00:19:41but a long way
00:19:42as you can see
00:19:42from this battle.
00:19:44Alan Frost,
00:19:45Alan Jones,
00:19:47Nelson Piquet
00:19:48and Carlos Reutemann.
00:19:49Alan Krupp
00:19:50in only his
00:19:5119th race.
00:19:52Alan Jones
00:19:53in his
00:19:5391st.
00:19:55Jones looking
00:19:55for his
00:19:5512th victory
00:19:56and Jones knowing
00:19:57that if he's going
00:19:58to keep the
00:19:59championship,
00:20:00well let's face it,
00:20:01he's now 19 points
00:20:02behind Carlos Reutemann.
00:20:03He has to start
00:20:04a victory sequence
00:20:05here in Germany.
00:20:07But I was at the
00:20:07Williams factory
00:20:08earlier this week
00:20:09and Frank Williams
00:20:10himself said he
00:20:11feels that Alan
00:20:12is ready to come
00:20:13out of the box.
00:20:14But at the moment
00:20:15he's got to get away
00:20:15from the gearbox
00:20:16of that Renault
00:20:17to get past
00:20:18pros somehow.
00:20:19He can sit there,
00:20:20he can hope
00:20:21he can pressure
00:20:21him into a mistake
00:20:22but of course
00:20:23all the time
00:20:24Nelson Piquet
00:20:25in the problem
00:20:25is closing,
00:20:26closing, closing
00:20:27and that problem
00:20:28the first car
00:20:29to have the
00:20:29rising rate suspension
00:20:30one of the best
00:20:31designs on the circuit
00:20:32going extremely well
00:20:34and Jones
00:20:34cannot afford
00:20:35to sit there
00:20:36too much longer.
00:20:39Jones having
00:20:40another little look
00:20:41but again
00:20:42it's a little bit
00:20:43of a hopeless case
00:20:44but he's nice
00:20:44and close in the stadium
00:20:45now and he's
00:20:46having a go
00:20:46and has he done it?
00:20:48Alan Jones is inside
00:20:49Frost and I think
00:20:50he's got it,
00:20:51he's got the inside
00:20:52Lino there
00:20:52actually neck and neck
00:20:53and the power
00:20:54oh, marvellous stuff
00:20:56side by side
00:20:57round the hairpin
00:20:57Frost got the power
00:20:59down better
00:20:59Jones was very good
00:21:00he didn't lean on him
00:21:01neither driver of course
00:21:03could possibly afford
00:21:03to touch each other
00:21:04they'll be very careful
00:21:05of that at this stage
00:21:06of the Grand Prix
00:21:06but that was marvellous stuff
00:21:07but it has brought
00:21:08Nelson Piquet
00:21:09right up to join them.
00:21:12Now, if I was in
00:21:13Carlos Reutemann's shoes
00:21:15I'd be pretty happy
00:21:16with the situation
00:21:16although he's been
00:21:17elbow to the back
00:21:18of the bunch
00:21:18he's got all his
00:21:20main contenders
00:21:21in his sight
00:21:22just in front of him
00:21:23he knows exactly
00:21:23what's going on
00:21:24and he'd be quite happy
00:21:25to see manoeuvres
00:21:26like side by side
00:21:27round the hairpin
00:21:27going on
00:21:28and probably hoping
00:21:29that they'll touch
00:21:30and move him up
00:21:32a couple of places
00:21:32by default
00:21:33but he'll be waiting
00:21:34he's reached the position
00:21:37he's in this year
00:21:37by running steadily
00:21:39and reliably
00:21:39and if he can do that
00:21:41for the rest of the year
00:21:42he's going to be
00:21:43a hard man to beat
00:21:44in the World Championship
00:21:45and so with
00:21:48nearly a quarter
00:21:48of the race
00:21:49on a superb battle
00:21:50between three of the
00:21:51great drivers
00:21:52of this season
00:21:53men who've all
00:21:54won a Grand Prix
00:21:55Alain Prost
00:21:56who won in France
00:21:57Piquet of course
00:21:59whom we saw win
00:21:59in the Argentine
00:22:00and again in Italy
00:22:01and Alan Jones
00:22:02who won the first race
00:22:03at Long Beach
00:22:04chased by Carlos Reutemann
00:22:05the man leading
00:22:06the championship
00:22:07after his wins
00:22:08in Brazil and Belgium
00:22:09these are contenders
00:22:10this is a battle
00:22:11and once again
00:22:13Pro's manages to pull away
00:22:15not only pulling away
00:22:16from Alan Jones
00:22:17but pushing Jones
00:22:18further into the clutches
00:22:19of Nelson Piquet
00:22:20and really we could be
00:22:21seeing James
00:22:22the battle that decides
00:22:23the championship
00:22:24yes I think so
00:22:26this is certainly
00:22:27the absolutely
00:22:28critical time
00:22:29to see which way
00:22:30the championship's going
00:22:31car coming to the pits
00:22:32with a flat front tower
00:22:33and he's stuck on
00:22:34the state road
00:22:36that was Derek Daly
00:22:37the Irish driver
00:22:38he had a flat tower
00:22:38I don't think
00:22:39he'll be able to
00:22:40may not even be able
00:22:41to get it to the pits
00:22:42so Alan Jones now
00:22:44is in a very unfortunate
00:22:45situation
00:22:46because he really
00:22:46wants to concentrate
00:22:47on the man
00:22:49in front of him
00:22:49Alan Prost
00:22:50to get past him
00:22:51but he's now got
00:22:52Piquet
00:22:53sufficiently close to him
00:22:54that he's got to look
00:22:55in his mirrors as well
00:22:56so he's now got to drive
00:22:58with four eyes
00:22:59two looking forward
00:23:00and two looking back
00:23:00and that makes his life
00:23:01very difficult indeed
00:23:03because any aggressive
00:23:05passing manoeuvre
00:23:06that doesn't come off
00:23:07is able to slow him down
00:23:09and let Piquet
00:23:10sweep through
00:23:11into his second place
00:23:13so it's a
00:23:14much more difficult problem
00:23:16to drive
00:23:16to try and overtake somebody
00:23:18when you've also got
00:23:19to protect your rear
00:23:1934 laps to go
00:23:22and these are the three men
00:23:24who are making this race
00:23:25Prost
00:23:26Jones
00:23:27and Piquet
00:23:27with Reutemann lurking
00:23:29I talked to Gilles Villeneuve
00:23:30the Ferrari driver
00:23:31just before the start
00:23:32of this race
00:23:32and he said
00:23:33whoever wins it
00:23:34Reutemann will get points
00:23:35and I'm sure that
00:23:36Reutemann sitting there
00:23:37knowing that the 11 best races
00:23:39count this season
00:23:40he'll be happy
00:23:41just to pick up points
00:23:42and add to that total
00:23:44but these three men
00:23:45are all looking
00:23:46for outright victory
00:23:47you're watching
00:23:48the BBC coverage
00:23:49at Silverstone
00:23:50you'd have seen
00:23:51Alain Prost say
00:23:52that he thought
00:23:52his defeat there
00:23:53cost him the championship
00:23:54he's certainly showing
00:23:55all the determination
00:23:57you could expect
00:23:58from the 26-year-old
00:23:59here as Alan Jones
00:24:00again goes up
00:24:00on his right-hand side
00:24:01tries to pass
00:24:02is he going to leave
00:24:03a way through for Piquet
00:24:04no he shuts that door
00:24:05on Piquet
00:24:06Reutemann still again
00:24:07Jones again
00:24:07trying to get past
00:24:08he's tried one side
00:24:09he's tried the other side
00:24:11Prost must have mirrors
00:24:12full of Alan Jones
00:24:13in that familiar white helmet
00:24:14Jones driving as aggressively
00:24:16as I've ever seen him drive
00:24:18bitterly disappointed
00:24:19about what happened
00:24:20when he was in
00:24:21the British Grand Prix
00:24:22when he couldn't help
00:24:23but hit Villeneuve
00:24:24really trying to get past
00:24:26and all the time
00:24:26in his mirrors
00:24:27he's got Piquet
00:24:28as he comes out
00:24:28of the chicane
00:24:29shot tossed there
00:24:30by Alain Prost
00:24:32couldn't get through
00:24:33but he's trying
00:24:33every inch of the way
00:24:35James Hunt
00:24:35yes I think it's a shame
00:24:37that he tried to pass
00:24:39at the end of the straight
00:24:40there going to that corner
00:24:41I think he would have
00:24:41had a much better chance
00:24:42to keep tucked in
00:24:43get through that one
00:24:44really quickly
00:24:45and have another go
00:24:46at the same place
00:24:47where he got alongside
00:24:48into the hairpin
00:24:49a lap or two ago
00:24:52he's certainly trying everything
00:24:54as Barry rightly says
00:24:56he's driving
00:24:56at the peak of his aggression
00:24:58he's driving
00:24:59if anything has matured
00:25:00since he's been world champion
00:25:01he's been unlucky
00:25:03to not to do better
00:25:06this year on points
00:25:07he's had
00:25:08everything's gone wrong
00:25:09for him
00:25:09mostly through no fault
00:25:11of his own
00:25:11but he's driving
00:25:12with great aggression
00:25:15and panache
00:25:16but there's safety through
00:25:29Alain Prost
00:25:30with the extra power
00:25:31doesn't really have a problem
00:25:33because he's able
00:25:33to go past him
00:25:34on the straight
00:25:34and Scherer pulls out
00:25:36of the way
00:25:36to let P.K. Reusman
00:25:37back to go through
00:25:38P.K. goes with him
00:25:39just as that's purely
00:25:40to pick up the slipstream
00:25:41which of course
00:25:42makes his car
00:25:43just that little bit
00:25:44closer down the straight
00:25:45really at the end
00:25:47of the chicane
00:25:48it's like a
00:25:48horseback chariot race
00:25:50with Alain Jones
00:25:50doing his best
00:25:51to do a Bodiceo
00:25:52or a Ben-Hur
00:25:53and get ahead
00:25:54of that approach
00:25:54and the good news
00:25:56for the British listeners
00:25:57is that Nigel Manley
00:25:58out of the pits again
00:25:59as Jones
00:26:00still nibbles away there
00:26:02as they come into
00:26:02the mode of trial
00:26:03and Mansell is back out
00:26:05and is in 19th position
00:26:07and so
00:26:09coming up
00:26:10to the end
00:26:11of the 14th lap
00:26:12of Alain Prost
00:26:14who has held its lead
00:26:15since a very
00:26:15wobbly start
00:26:17off the line
00:26:17passes underneath
00:26:18the country position
00:26:19and it is
00:26:20Prost
00:26:21Jones
00:26:22P.K.
00:26:24Reutemann
00:26:25Lapite
00:26:25and Rebac
00:26:26followed by
00:26:27Tambay
00:26:28Petrezzi
00:26:28Chiva
00:26:29and Mario Andretti
00:26:30John Watson
00:26:31has moved up
00:26:32to 14th position
00:26:33round into that
00:26:44first chicane
00:26:44dropping down
00:26:45into third gear
00:26:46125 miles an hour
00:26:49according to
00:26:49Alain Jones'
00:26:50little chart
00:26:50which I must tell you
00:26:52Alisio Salazar
00:26:53was having a look at
00:26:54over my shoulder
00:26:55today
00:26:55up into fourth
00:26:56and to 140 miles an hour
00:26:59accelerating into fifth
00:27:01to go round the course
00:27:02curve
00:27:02at something like
00:27:04160 miles an hour
00:27:06one driver described
00:27:08this corner to me
00:27:09as being swung round
00:27:10like a conker
00:27:11on a piece of string
00:27:12tremendous key force there
00:27:14and they then
00:27:15swooped down in fifth gear
00:27:16to the next chicane
00:27:17and so after 15 rounds
00:27:21Alain Prost
00:27:21just leading from
00:27:23Alain Jones
00:27:23to the Sadio Leyland
00:27:25Nelson Figue third
00:27:26Carlos Reutemann
00:27:27fourth
00:27:28Jacques Lafitte fifth
00:27:29and Hector
00:27:30back in the
00:27:31Alderbarram
00:27:31sixth
00:27:32last 15 of the 45 luck race
00:27:46last 15 of the 45 luck race
00:28:00a third of the race
00:28:01nearly completed
00:28:02and for most of it
00:28:04Alain Prost
00:28:04the young Frenchman
00:28:05has had to see
00:28:07Alain Jones
00:28:07one of the hardest
00:28:08charges in the business
00:28:09sitting there
00:28:10on his exit
00:28:11and Jones
00:28:13has got
00:28:13Carlos Reutemann
00:28:14behind him
00:28:15in third place
00:28:17Reutemann
00:28:21who has taken Piquet
00:28:22and sold now
00:28:23it is Renault
00:28:24Sadio Leyland
00:28:25Sadio Leyland
00:28:26Brabham
00:28:27and suddenly
00:28:28Jones the world champion
00:28:29has his teammate
00:28:30the world championship
00:28:31leader behind him
00:28:32Piquet
00:28:34something has happened
00:28:35to Piquet
00:28:35what do you think
00:28:36happened there James?
00:28:37well I didn't see anything
00:28:38I suspect that Piquet
00:28:40maybe made a little
00:28:41slip in a corner
00:28:42and just slowed himself down
00:28:43and Reutemann went past
00:28:44because Piquet is pretty fast
00:28:45on the straight
00:28:46normally
00:28:47and I should think
00:28:48Alain Jones
00:28:48will be quite relieved
00:28:49I think he would prefer
00:28:51to see Carlos Reutemann
00:28:52in his immediate mirrors
00:28:54than Nelson Piquet
00:28:56because the Brabham
00:28:56is a pretty quick car
00:28:57in the straight line
00:28:58and if you ever got
00:28:59into a good
00:29:00slingshot
00:29:01sort of toe position
00:29:02behind him
00:29:04he might well come past
00:29:05Jones still
00:29:06climbing all over
00:29:07the back of the Renault
00:29:08all over him
00:29:09like a rachius
00:29:10but
00:29:11there's no avail
00:29:13with that extra power
00:29:14oh
00:29:14they're diving about
00:29:16all over the place
00:29:17but the trouble is
00:29:18there's always a couple
00:29:18of extra clear air
00:29:19between the cars
00:29:20and there's no position
00:29:22in which to attack
00:29:24particularly into these
00:29:25very very fast
00:29:25chicanes
00:29:26where they have
00:29:26such a short
00:29:27braking distance
00:29:27Renault who had the
00:29:31first tire change
00:29:32during the race
00:29:33for Renault who
00:29:34destroyed his tires
00:29:35when he went over the curve
00:29:37he told him to end
00:29:38because it started
00:29:40a little bit of rain
00:29:41Renault die den ersten
00:29:42reifenwechsel heute
00:29:43hatten mit Renault
00:29:44und Huber
00:29:44und die schrecken
00:29:45begrenzungen ausprobenden
00:29:46und die schrecken
00:29:47und die schrecken
00:29:48sie hatten sie vor
00:29:48an eventuellen reifenwechsel
00:29:50und hatten die Regenreisen
00:29:51geblieben
00:29:52um zu schrecken
00:29:53zu sein
00:29:53gerĂ¼stet zu sein
00:29:54und die groĂŸen
00:29:56ausprobieren
00:29:56Well, Harald Oertl
00:29:59the German sportscar driver
00:30:01who's helping us
00:30:02in both English
00:30:02and German
00:30:03in the pit
00:30:03saying that there are
00:30:05spots of rain
00:30:06and what a tragedy
00:30:07it would be
00:30:08if rain broke up
00:30:09this tremendous battle
00:30:10between young
00:30:11Alain Kroft
00:30:12the world champion
00:30:13Alan Jones
00:30:13in second place
00:30:14and Carla Troy
00:30:15and of course
00:30:16the man with more
00:30:16Grand Prix
00:30:17than anyone else
00:30:18sitting nursing
00:30:19that third place
00:30:20ahead of PK
00:30:20It would be rather
00:30:22ironical
00:30:23wouldn't it Barry
00:30:23but most of the time
00:30:25we're praying
00:30:25we pray for rain
00:30:28to liven them up
00:30:29to give them
00:30:30a bit of spark
00:30:31and today we've got
00:30:32an absolute humdinger
00:30:33of a motor race
00:30:34four cars
00:30:35three of them
00:30:36the top men
00:30:38in the world championship
00:30:39table
00:30:39all batting away
00:30:40for the lead
00:30:41and if we get rain
00:30:42of course
00:30:42particularly if it comes
00:30:44down hard
00:30:44they're not able
00:30:45to stop the race
00:30:46and restart it again
00:30:47when everybody's
00:30:48spinning it out
00:30:49onto wet towers
00:30:49I don't think
00:30:50these pits are big
00:30:50enough to handle
00:30:51a whole field
00:30:52coming in together
00:30:52too dangerous
00:30:54when they all come
00:30:55in and change towers
00:30:56which is why they
00:30:57stop races
00:30:58should those conditions
00:30:59prevail
00:31:00but I
00:31:00Harold Spedding
00:31:02is spotting the drain
00:31:03I'm looking carefully
00:31:05at the track
00:31:05I can't see anything wet
00:31:06Jones still battling away
00:31:08but still
00:31:09still that couple of lengths
00:31:11of clear air between them
00:31:13and it's just
00:31:13not on
00:31:14he's got to get a good run
00:31:15now
00:31:16through the chicane
00:31:17down to the stadium
00:31:18get close
00:31:19to cross
00:31:20as they break
00:31:21to the stadium
00:31:22he doesn't want to pass here
00:31:28he wants to get
00:31:29really close to here
00:31:29and then
00:31:30try and outbrake him
00:31:31he's not really close enough
00:31:32unless he gets a good run
00:31:33to his call
00:31:33and then try and outbrake him
00:31:34into this left-hand hairpin
00:31:35that they're approaching now
00:31:36not close enough this time
00:31:38Roitermann's
00:31:40getting very close
00:31:41right back in contention there
00:31:42but I don't think
00:31:43he'll be making
00:31:43any particularly
00:31:45ferocious attempts
00:31:46coming up then
00:31:49to complete
00:31:4917 laps
00:31:50and Alain Cross
00:31:51still holding on
00:31:52to that tenuous
00:31:53turbo lead
00:31:54from Alan Jones
00:31:54in second place
00:31:55Carlos Roitermann's
00:31:56third
00:31:57Nelson Piquet's fourth
00:31:58Jack Lafitte's fifth
00:31:59Trevathan's fifth
00:32:01followed by
00:32:01Tambay
00:32:02Patrezi
00:32:03Chiva
00:32:04and De Angelis
00:32:05Mario Andretti's 11th
00:32:06and Jarrier's 12th
00:32:07and John Watson
00:32:08has now moved up
00:32:09to 13th place
00:32:10and Nigel Mantle
00:32:11is according to my reckoning
00:32:1321st
00:32:14and I think we should say
00:32:16James
00:32:17that in fifth position
00:32:18behind this big quartet
00:32:19is the man who won
00:32:20the race last year
00:32:21Jack Lafitte
00:32:22in the Colbert Ligier
00:32:23yes Jack certainly
00:32:26was going like
00:32:26a real tiger
00:32:27on the first lap
00:32:28but his car
00:32:29just hasn't quite
00:32:29got the legs
00:32:30to stay with
00:32:31the leading group
00:32:32but he's a
00:32:33he's a great trier
00:32:34Jack
00:32:34he's a very good driver
00:32:35he's a really tough
00:32:36little man
00:32:37it's very hard work
00:32:38to drive
00:32:38these Grand Prix cars
00:32:39these days
00:32:40but one thing
00:32:40Jack knows
00:32:41that Jack
00:32:42despite his
00:32:43diminished size
00:32:44all wiry
00:32:46little muscles
00:32:46he's not
00:32:47he never
00:32:48gets tired
00:32:49he's always
00:32:49hanging in there
00:32:50but as I say
00:32:50he's basically
00:32:51racing the
00:32:52Division 2 cars
00:32:54and leading them
00:32:56quite comfortably
00:32:56and holding them off
00:32:58here we go
00:32:58back to the leading battle
00:32:59Alan Jones
00:33:00once again
00:33:01doing his little
00:33:02pulling out trick
00:33:03but
00:33:03Alan Frost
00:33:04weaving a bit
00:33:05down the straight
00:33:06but
00:33:06still
00:33:08it's not close enough
00:33:10come down
00:33:11let's see if Alan Jones
00:33:12if he could run
00:33:13through there
00:33:13he can get
00:33:14right
00:33:14what he wants to do
00:33:15is to get right
00:33:16across the exhaust pipe
00:33:18as they come out
00:33:19of this right-hand corner
00:33:20so that they're heading
00:33:22down to down
00:33:23quite close this time
00:33:24still not quite close
00:33:28enough to swing
00:33:29through there
00:33:29really well
00:33:30and of course
00:33:31one of the problems
00:33:32is that
00:33:33as the race
00:33:34goes on
00:33:35things may get worse
00:33:37the Jones
00:33:38as far as
00:33:38passing
00:33:39across the car
00:33:39because
00:33:40the thermocharged
00:33:41cars
00:33:41do have a bit
00:33:42despite
00:33:43because of their
00:33:43extra power
00:33:44they also use
00:33:45quite a considerable
00:33:46more
00:33:48considerably
00:33:49larger quantity
00:33:50of fuel
00:33:50therefore they start
00:33:51with their cars
00:33:51a great deal heavier
00:33:52but as the race
00:33:54goes on
00:33:54this thing is
00:33:56evened up
00:33:56because they're
00:33:57drinking it
00:33:57at a faster rate
00:33:58and therefore
00:33:58they get
00:33:59relatively lighter
00:34:00so the acceleration
00:34:01of the car
00:34:02relative to the
00:34:03forward-engine car
00:34:04of Alan Jones
00:34:05and the others
00:34:06goes up
00:34:08which improves
00:34:09the performance
00:34:11just creates
00:34:11makes the problem
00:34:12even worse
00:34:12for the people
00:34:14who are trying
00:34:14to get past it
00:34:15still leads
00:34:26from the two
00:34:27Saudi alaylands
00:34:28the Tagwellian
00:34:30team drivers
00:34:30of Jones and
00:34:32Reutemann
00:34:32the world champion
00:34:33and the man
00:34:34who wants to win
00:34:35the world championship
00:34:36Carlos Reutemann
00:34:37now 39 with a
00:34:3917 point lead
00:34:40James
00:34:40I've just noticed
00:34:43they do seem to be
00:34:43dropping Piquet a little
00:34:44bit now
00:34:45Piquet is there
00:34:46goes Piquet
00:34:47but that shot
00:34:49is a little bit
00:34:50foreshortened
00:34:50and he's a little bit
00:34:51further behind
00:34:52than he looks
00:34:53it's nothing significant
00:34:55but he's
00:34:553.6 seconds
00:34:57behind there
00:34:58you see on the
00:34:59captions
00:34:59and
00:35:00in view of the fact
00:35:03the two Williamses
00:35:04are probably not
00:35:04going as fast
00:35:05as they could
00:35:06because they're
00:35:06a bit held up
00:35:07through the
00:35:07twisty sections
00:35:08by
00:35:08Frost-Breno
00:35:10that was
00:35:10incidentally
00:35:11René Arnoux
00:35:12just in front
00:35:13of Frost
00:35:13there
00:35:13who you've
00:35:14remembered
00:35:14has been
00:35:14into the pit
00:35:15lost some time
00:35:16and they're
00:35:17slowly gaining
00:35:18on him
00:35:18the latters
00:35:19and so he
00:35:19would go a lap
00:35:20down
00:35:20as and when
00:35:22they catch
00:35:23and pass
00:35:23him
00:35:23he may do
00:35:24I don't suppose
00:35:25he can be
00:35:25of much help
00:35:26to his team mate
00:35:27Alan Frost
00:35:28his job
00:35:28when they catch
00:35:29it will keep
00:35:29well out of the way
00:35:30and make sure
00:35:30that he doesn't
00:35:31give the two
00:35:33Williamses
00:35:33a chance
00:35:34to gobble up
00:35:35Frost-Breno
00:35:36by making
00:35:37a mess of things
00:35:38well you see
00:35:41how close
00:35:41they are there
00:35:42I just got by
00:35:43watch on it
00:35:44as we complete
00:35:4520 laps of this race
00:35:46and there's only
00:35:47half a second
00:35:48in it
00:35:48half a second
00:35:49between
00:35:49Frost and Jones
00:35:50and there isn't
00:35:51even half a second
00:35:52in it
00:35:52between Jones
00:35:53and Reutemann
00:35:54but Reutemann
00:35:55has got nearly
00:35:55a four second
00:35:56lead over
00:35:57Nelson Figue
00:35:57as the back
00:35:59mark
00:35:59now that is
00:36:00René Arnoux
00:36:01ahead of his
00:36:02teammate
00:36:02and Alan Jones
00:36:03almost then
00:36:04got past
00:36:05Alan Frost
00:36:05because of where
00:36:06René Arnoux
00:36:07was on the track
00:36:07James
00:36:08well that
00:36:09Frost
00:36:10is again doing
00:36:10his moving about
00:36:11across the track
00:36:12trick
00:36:13and he nearly
00:36:14let Alan Jones
00:36:15pick up
00:36:16what show
00:36:17that René Arnoux
00:36:18was doing
00:36:18of course
00:36:18that just
00:36:19doesn't get
00:36:20nearly so much
00:36:20effect
00:36:21but
00:36:21Frost
00:36:23certainly
00:36:23wants to sit
00:36:24right to hide
00:36:25the lie
00:36:25that Arnoux's
00:36:27car is big
00:36:27not only
00:36:28to benefit
00:36:28from the show
00:36:29for himself
00:36:30but also
00:36:30to make sure
00:36:31Jones
00:36:31can pick it up
00:36:32and feel
00:36:33the benefit
00:36:34for him
00:36:35well just
00:36:37in case
00:36:37you get confused
00:36:38as we look
00:36:38at Nelson
00:36:39Piquet
00:36:39who's dropping
00:36:40back
00:36:40the yellow
00:36:41car you see
00:36:41in the
00:36:42France
00:36:42his car
00:36:42number 16
00:36:43of René Arnoux
00:36:44who's in
00:36:4416th position
00:36:45followed by
00:36:46his teammate
00:36:46Alan Frost
00:36:4715
00:36:47who is
00:36:48first
00:36:48ahead of
00:36:49Alan Jones
00:36:49number 1
00:36:50who is
00:36:50second
00:36:51Carlos Reutemann
00:36:52number 2
00:36:53who is
00:36:53third
00:36:53and Nelson
00:36:54Piquet
00:36:55number 5
00:36:55who is
00:36:56fourth
00:36:56I think
00:36:57things could
00:36:58be developing
00:36:58here
00:36:59I don't know
00:36:59whether Arnoux
00:37:00plans to get
00:37:01out of the way
00:37:01and let them
00:37:02go into the
00:37:02stadium on their
00:37:02own
00:37:03but he's going
00:37:03to give Jones
00:37:04a chance
00:37:04to be held
00:37:04crossed up
00:37:05at all
00:37:06Jones decides
00:37:07to close
00:37:07now can Jones
00:37:08stay close
00:37:08enough to have
00:37:09a swing
00:37:09into this
00:37:11camp in here
00:37:12no he can't
00:37:12yes he can
00:37:14Alan Jones
00:37:14has not through
00:37:15Alan Jones
00:37:16takes the lead
00:37:17on the right
00:37:18part of the
00:37:18he's now got
00:37:19the stadium
00:37:19section left
00:37:20to pull away
00:37:21enough of a lead
00:37:22he needs enough
00:37:22of a lead
00:37:23which he seems
00:37:24to have got
00:37:24already
00:37:25he's pulled
00:37:25away
00:37:26already
00:37:2720-30 yards
00:37:28he may need
00:37:29a little bit
00:37:29more
00:37:30to get
00:37:31to get by
00:37:33yes
00:37:34but
00:37:34Reutemann
00:37:35has moved
00:37:35past one
00:37:36of the
00:37:36Reds
00:37:36I can't
00:37:36see which
00:37:37one
00:37:37but all I
00:37:37can see is
00:37:38here we have
00:37:38a little replay
00:37:39it was best
00:37:40by his own
00:37:41team mate
00:37:41and how ironic
00:37:43and very very
00:37:43sad for Alan
00:37:44Frost
00:37:44I think
00:37:45René Arnoux
00:37:46really should
00:37:46have let them
00:37:47through on the
00:37:47straight
00:37:48slow down
00:37:48because
00:37:49he could only
00:37:50cause risks
00:37:52and problems
00:37:52by joining in
00:37:54with their little
00:37:54battle through
00:37:55the stadium
00:37:55and Alan
00:37:56Jones
00:37:56now has
00:37:56a big enough
00:37:57lead
00:37:58and Alan
00:37:58Jones
00:37:58is off
00:37:59and away
00:37:59and no one
00:38:00is going to
00:38:01catch him
00:38:02or at least
00:38:03not
00:38:03the Renaults
00:38:04aren't going to
00:38:05catch him
00:38:05it's now up to
00:38:06Carlos Reutemann
00:38:07to find a way
00:38:08past Alan
00:38:09Frost
00:38:09and try and get
00:38:10through
00:38:10so Alan
00:38:11Jones
00:38:11now clearly
00:38:12established
00:38:13vastly superior
00:38:14speed
00:38:14you see the
00:38:15huge lead
00:38:15he's already
00:38:16opened out
00:38:16and of course
00:38:17now as Reutemann
00:38:18is going to
00:38:18start panicking
00:38:19and you see
00:38:19Jones
00:38:19at the distance
00:38:20but of course
00:38:21championship
00:38:22position wise
00:38:23he only has
00:38:23the finish
00:38:24close behind
00:38:25Jones
00:38:25is going to
00:38:26Jones has all
00:38:28going to
00:38:30well that really
00:38:31was quite
00:38:32amazing
00:38:32that poor man
00:38:33car number 15
00:38:34Alan Frost
00:38:35who found himself
00:38:36in a tangle
00:38:36with his teammate
00:38:37René Arnoux
00:38:38who in all his
00:38:3940 races
00:38:40with Renault
00:38:40can surely
00:38:41not have made
00:38:42a mistake
00:38:42quite as crucial
00:38:43as that one
00:38:43he really did
00:38:45as James
00:38:45Hans has explained
00:38:46seemed to
00:38:47open the gate
00:38:48for Alan
00:38:48Jones to get
00:38:49through
00:38:49and although
00:38:50Alan Frost
00:38:51is managing
00:38:51now to hold
00:38:52Reutemann
00:38:52Bay
00:38:53Alan Jones
00:38:54looks at it
00:38:55he could be
00:38:55heading for
00:38:56nine points
00:38:57and just as
00:38:58Frank Williams
00:38:58forecast earlier
00:38:59this week
00:39:00the German
00:39:01Grand Prix
00:39:01is the race
00:39:03where Jones
00:39:03first won
00:39:04a race here
00:39:05for Williams
00:39:06he went on
00:39:06to win four
00:39:07in a row
00:39:07there is no way
00:39:09that Alan Jones
00:39:09has surrendered
00:39:10the world
00:39:11championship
00:39:11he may be
00:39:1219 points
00:39:13behind
00:39:14his teammate
00:39:15Charlotte Reutemann
00:39:16but as he leads
00:39:17the way
00:39:18into the
00:39:19motodrome
00:39:20there you see
00:39:20Arnoux and
00:39:21Reutemann
00:39:22with 22 laps
00:39:23completed
00:39:24Alan Jones
00:39:25has already
00:39:26built up
00:39:26a 1.6
00:39:28second lead
00:39:29over Alan
00:39:29Cross
00:39:29there you see
00:39:30him in the picture
00:39:31Jones
00:39:32followed by
00:39:33Frost
00:39:33followed by
00:39:34Reutemann
00:39:35Nelson Pite
00:39:36has closed up
00:39:37enjoying that
00:39:37little drama
00:39:38Jacques Lafitte
00:39:39last year's
00:39:40winner
00:39:40is 6
00:39:41and
00:39:43Hector Rebac
00:39:44in the second
00:39:44Brabham
00:39:45is 6
00:39:45we see
00:39:47that John
00:39:48Watson
00:39:48is still
00:39:4813
00:39:49Nigel
00:39:50Mantle
00:39:50is 22nd
00:39:51Derek
00:39:52daily despite
00:39:53his excursion
00:39:53his 21st
00:39:54what a remarkable
00:39:55overtaking
00:39:56manoeuvre
00:39:57on that lap
00:39:58Alan Jones
00:39:59in the lead
00:39:59followed as you
00:40:01can see there
00:40:01by Alan Cross
00:40:02followed by
00:40:03Carlos Reutemann
00:40:04and Renault
00:40:06who have had a
00:40:07first throw
00:40:07qualification here
00:40:08for 3 years
00:40:09never finish a car
00:40:10here
00:40:11at least have a
00:40:12car second
00:40:12but anything
00:40:14can happen
00:40:14now
00:40:15and Alan Cross
00:40:16the man who
00:40:17is so unlucky
00:40:18at Silverstone
00:40:19must be feeling
00:40:20very fed up
00:40:20with his
00:40:21team mate
00:40:21indeed
00:40:22James
00:40:22yes I'm
00:40:24afraid so
00:40:24that was
00:40:25unincullished
00:40:26describing
00:40:27by
00:40:27Freddie Arnoux
00:40:29I think
00:40:30I said
00:40:30as they came
00:40:31down the
00:40:31straight
00:40:31before
00:40:32that Arnoux
00:40:33should get
00:40:33out of the
00:40:34way
00:40:34and let him
00:40:34go through
00:40:35let Cross
00:40:35get on
00:40:35with the
00:40:36job
00:40:36that he
00:40:36was doing
00:40:36fine
00:40:37when he
00:40:37was doing
00:40:38without
00:40:38any help
00:40:39from his
00:40:39team mate
00:40:40or anybody
00:40:40else
00:40:41and as soon
00:40:41as he got
00:40:42a bit of
00:40:42help
00:40:42from his
00:40:42team mate
00:40:43that was
00:40:43sadly
00:40:44at the end
00:40:45of the job
00:40:45he was doing
00:40:46I think
00:40:46there would be
00:40:47some pretty
00:40:48angry people
00:40:49in the
00:40:49Renault pit
00:40:50and I
00:40:51would think
00:40:51there would be
00:40:52one pretty
00:40:52angry man
00:40:53out there
00:40:53on the track
00:40:54possibly two
00:40:55because I'm
00:40:55sure Arnoux
00:40:55is very angry
00:40:56with himself
00:40:56as well
00:40:57because he
00:40:57must realise
00:40:58the little
00:40:59disaster
00:41:00that he
00:41:00perpetrates
00:41:01it
00:41:01I would be
00:41:02surprised
00:41:02if we see
00:41:03a new
00:41:03faster
00:41:03flashed up
00:41:05pretty soon
00:41:05because
00:41:05Jones
00:41:06is really
00:41:06streaking
00:41:07away
00:41:07and I'm
00:41:07sure
00:41:07now that
00:41:08he's got
00:41:08a clear
00:41:08track
00:41:09in front of
00:41:09him
00:41:09he's
00:41:10going to
00:41:10be
00:41:10lapping
00:41:11a
00:41:11fair bit
00:41:11quicker
00:41:19PK 29
00:41:26and
00:41:26Lafitte
00:41:27and
00:41:27Villeneuve
00:41:2823
00:41:28and
00:41:29James
00:41:30Hudson
00:41:30was the
00:41:31man
00:41:31who
00:41:31heard
00:41:32funny
00:41:32noises
00:41:33at
00:41:33Silver
00:41:33Soul
00:41:33but there
00:41:34are no
00:41:34funny
00:41:34noises
00:41:35in the
00:41:35leading
00:41:35cars
00:41:36at the
00:41:36moment
00:41:36James
00:41:37they all
00:41:38sound quite
00:41:39healthy
00:41:39and
00:41:40Reutemann
00:41:41is certainly
00:41:41very healthy
00:41:42and full of
00:41:42beans
00:41:42in his car
00:41:43because he's
00:41:43now resorted
00:41:45to psychological
00:41:46shatkins
00:41:46with Alain Frost
00:41:47successfully
00:41:48holding it up
00:41:49but it's quite
00:41:50legitimate here
00:41:50that he's wanting
00:41:51to keep his
00:41:51second base
00:41:52Reutemann
00:41:52is waving his
00:41:53fist
00:41:53fairly frantically
00:41:54at Frost
00:41:55telling him
00:41:56he wants to
00:41:57come through
00:41:57but I don't
00:41:58think Frost
00:41:58is going to
00:41:59bow to
00:42:00that sort
00:42:00of bludgeoning
00:42:01and will
00:42:02probably
00:42:03just calm
00:42:04his resolve
00:42:05to keep
00:42:06Reutemann
00:42:06Lefei
00:42:07behind him
00:42:07he's probably
00:42:08probably still
00:42:10still rankling
00:42:12over
00:42:13his unfortunate
00:42:15error
00:42:15team mate
00:42:16and gets him
00:42:17there
00:42:17goes Frost
00:42:18swinging
00:42:19through the
00:42:19right-hander
00:42:20into the
00:42:20stadium
00:42:20Reutemann
00:42:22not close
00:42:22enough
00:42:23to have
00:42:23a go
00:42:23certainly
00:42:24we haven't
00:42:24quite got
00:42:24a good shot
00:42:25he's close
00:42:27enough
00:42:27he's got to
00:42:28just about
00:42:28get a long
00:42:28time
00:42:29before
00:42:29you can
00:42:29have a
00:42:29go
00:42:30under
00:42:30breaking
00:42:30but of
00:42:30course
00:42:31he's
00:42:32closed
00:42:32up
00:42:32the
00:42:32stadium
00:42:33and
00:42:33of course
00:42:34what's
00:42:35probably
00:42:35bothering
00:42:36Carlos
00:42:36Roy
00:42:36but
00:42:37something
00:42:37fell
00:42:37off
00:42:37one of
00:42:38the
00:42:38back
00:42:38Marcus
00:42:38cars
00:42:39and
00:42:39Alan
00:42:39Jones
00:42:39could easily
00:42:40have got that
00:42:41in the face
00:42:41it bounced off
00:42:42his front
00:42:42tower
00:42:43I don't know
00:42:43whether you
00:42:43saw that
00:42:44little bit
00:42:44it looks like
00:42:44they have a
00:42:45little flip-up
00:42:46flip on the
00:42:47rear wing
00:42:47a little bit of
00:42:48aluminium
00:42:49but of course
00:42:49but of course
00:42:49if you pull in the
00:42:50place
00:42:51lengthways on
00:42:52that can
00:42:53do you a very
00:42:55serious injury
00:42:55could even
00:42:56kill somebody
00:42:57it's not a
00:42:57good idea
00:42:58to have racing
00:42:59cars running
00:42:59on the
00:42:59traffic
00:42:59falling off
00:43:00of
00:43:00but
00:43:01obviously
00:43:02wasn't intended
00:43:03and that
00:43:05is
00:43:06is that
00:43:07René Arnoux
00:43:07is René Arnoux
00:43:09now on his own
00:43:10out of the way
00:43:11of the leading
00:43:12front
00:43:12and just
00:43:12soldiering on
00:43:13hoping to pick up
00:43:15faces
00:43:15probably through
00:43:16rather than
00:43:17anything else
00:43:18so he can finish in the
00:43:20frame somewhere
00:43:21we're having a look at
00:43:32some of the back
00:43:33markers there
00:43:33Sieg B. Storr
00:43:34the young psychologist
00:43:36from Rome
00:43:37German name
00:43:38Italian driver
00:43:39just scraped in
00:43:39at the back
00:43:40of the grid
00:43:40we haven't told you
00:43:42that neither
00:43:43of the Tolmans
00:43:44qualified
00:43:44there Storr
00:43:45just ahead of Jones
00:43:46both the Tolmans
00:43:47failed to qualify
00:43:48Brian Henson
00:43:49had an engine
00:43:50blow up
00:43:50in the final practice
00:43:51neither of the
00:43:52Pitti-Powleys
00:43:53qualified
00:43:53Gabiani
00:43:54didn't qualify
00:43:55but Charrier
00:43:56did very well
00:43:56in the Ocella
00:43:57and this man's
00:43:58secret Storr
00:43:59who Jones
00:43:59is just sweeping
00:44:01by now
00:44:01he's glad to get
00:44:02past him
00:44:03into the chicane
00:44:04Storr
00:44:06with the 24th
00:44:07in the Arrows
00:44:07Ricardo Petraezi
00:44:09of course
00:44:10the Arrows
00:44:10team leader
00:44:11been the subject
00:44:11of that speculation
00:44:12here this weekend
00:44:13there are rumours
00:44:15that Andretti
00:44:15might go back
00:44:16to American racing
00:44:17next year
00:44:18and Petraezi
00:44:19is being
00:44:19supported very strongly
00:44:20by Alfa Romeo
00:44:21but at the moment
00:44:23for Kraezi
00:44:23who is lying
00:44:24eighth in the Arrows
00:44:25I should think
00:44:26would be very happy
00:44:27to be with the Arrows team
00:44:28as Andretti
00:44:29is 11th
00:44:30there's the famous
00:44:32ABBA symbol
00:44:33we've got Tommy Borgood
00:44:34the drummer
00:44:35the man we saw
00:44:36in his sixth
00:44:37at Silverstone
00:44:38being cheered on
00:44:39by his colleague
00:44:40from ABBA
00:44:40at the moment
00:44:4119 laps to go
00:44:44of this 45 lap race
00:44:45and the order
00:44:47is still
00:44:47Alan Jones
00:44:48number one
00:44:49in your picture
00:44:50Alan Jones
00:44:51first in the
00:44:52Sadia Leyland
00:44:53Alan Croft
00:44:54second in your picture
00:44:55now the second
00:44:56yellow car
00:44:57in the Renault
00:44:58third
00:44:59with Nelson Piquet
00:45:00right on his
00:45:01angles
00:45:01now
00:45:02and Piquet
00:45:02coming to take
00:45:03Carlos Reutemann
00:45:04Piquet who dropped back
00:45:05trying to take Reutemann
00:45:06he's swept through
00:45:07on the inside
00:45:07Piquet has done it
00:45:09is there something
00:45:10wrong with Reutemann's
00:45:11car
00:45:11that's the third
00:45:12move at the
00:45:13championship
00:45:13Nelson Piquet
00:45:14second in the
00:45:15championship
00:45:15the moment
00:45:16behind Reutemann
00:45:17now leads him
00:45:18on the road
00:45:18and the order
00:45:19Alan Jones
00:45:20Alan Croft
00:45:21now Nelson Piquet
00:45:23in the Brabham
00:45:23leading Carlos Reutemann
00:45:25and James
00:45:25well that's not a
00:45:27good news
00:45:27bad news
00:45:28because in
00:45:29position stay
00:45:30at the end
00:45:31it takes a couple
00:45:32of points away
00:45:32from Carlos Reutemann
00:45:34on the other hand
00:45:34it gives
00:45:35that extra couple
00:45:36of points
00:45:36to Nelson Piquet
00:45:37and James
00:45:39of course
00:45:39line third
00:45:39in the championship
00:45:40they're both
00:45:40ahead of him
00:45:41so he probably
00:45:42in fact
00:45:44I think he'll probably
00:45:44see the points
00:45:45removed from Reutemann
00:45:46more than
00:45:47he minds
00:45:48Piquet getting
00:45:48points at the
00:45:49moment
00:45:49but
00:45:50as we've said
00:45:52already
00:45:53a couple of times
00:45:54in this race
00:45:54an absolutely
00:45:55critical stage
00:45:56in the championship
00:45:57and Reutemann
00:45:59still
00:45:59as well
00:46:01now stop waiting
00:46:02to lift the front
00:46:03that's the back
00:46:04mark at the time
00:46:05Piquet
00:46:05has tried to pass
00:46:07yes
00:46:07he's given him
00:46:08he's spotted him
00:46:09at the last minute
00:46:10Piquet's through
00:46:11it was possibly
00:46:12a slightly
00:46:13fraught moment
00:46:13and Reutemann
00:46:14will be wanting
00:46:15to get round
00:46:15the outside
00:46:16of his
00:46:16there
00:46:17it was funny
00:46:19just before
00:46:20that manoeuvre
00:46:21by Piquet
00:46:22Reutemann
00:46:22was shaking
00:46:23his fist
00:46:23at Kroos
00:46:24probably he was
00:46:25paying too much
00:46:25attention
00:46:26to the car
00:46:26in front
00:46:27and perhaps
00:46:28not enough
00:46:28to Piquet
00:46:29behind
00:46:29Piquet
00:46:30certainly slowed
00:46:31at one point
00:46:31of the race
00:46:32would have been
00:46:33the tyres
00:46:33on the half
00:46:33and there you see
00:46:34Alan Jones
00:46:35with a seven
00:46:36second lead
00:46:37over Alan
00:46:38Kroos
00:46:38and Kroos
00:46:40has got
00:46:41quite a lead
00:46:42now over
00:46:43Nelson Piquet
00:46:44in Kroos
00:46:44nine second lead
00:46:45and Reutemann
00:46:47is really
00:46:48dropping back
00:46:49now
00:46:49so there
00:46:50you see
00:46:51that Alan Jones
00:46:53being chased
00:46:54still by Kroos
00:46:54but Piquet
00:46:55his very serious
00:46:57rival
00:46:57Piquet really fought
00:46:58in for the world
00:46:59championship
00:46:59last year
00:47:00moving up
00:47:01and I'm sure
00:47:01we're going
00:47:02to see Piquet
00:47:02challenging
00:47:03Prost
00:47:03very shortly
00:47:04now
00:47:04yes
00:47:07I think
00:47:08Piquet
00:47:08probably
00:47:09has more
00:47:10chance
00:47:10of dealing
00:47:11with Prost
00:47:12than Reutemann
00:47:13did
00:47:13because I think
00:47:13Piquet's car
00:47:14there probably
00:47:15is a little bit
00:47:15quicker down
00:47:16the straight
00:47:16in the wind
00:47:17but
00:47:18Reutemann
00:47:19seems to be
00:47:20very down
00:47:21he may just
00:47:21be taking
00:47:22a breather
00:47:22remember
00:47:23it's very hot
00:47:23here
00:47:24very hard
00:47:25working
00:47:25the cockpit
00:47:25the cars
00:47:26with their
00:47:27very hard
00:47:27suspension
00:47:28or almost
00:47:29no suspension
00:47:30really battered
00:47:32the drivers
00:47:32a lot
00:47:33and it's
00:47:33quite an order
00:47:34to take the
00:47:35out
00:47:35freedom
00:47:35particularly
00:47:36we've just
00:47:36been passed
00:47:37but I am
00:47:37trying to get
00:47:38a good look
00:47:39at Reutemann's
00:47:40car
00:47:41particularly
00:47:41his tyres
00:47:42to see if I
00:47:42can see any
00:47:43marking up
00:47:43of the tyres
00:47:44because
00:47:45if for example
00:47:47there is
00:47:47anything wrong
00:47:47with him
00:47:48then of course
00:47:48he's got
00:47:50potential problems
00:47:52for both
00:47:53Piquet
00:47:54and Jones
00:47:54and there's
00:47:55Alan Jones
00:47:55is it
00:47:55no it's
00:47:57Reutemann
00:47:58Reutemann
00:47:58has let go
00:47:59that's
00:48:00an engine
00:48:00blow up
00:48:01so that
00:48:01would probably
00:48:02explain why
00:48:02Reutemann
00:48:03slowed up
00:48:04a bit
00:48:04it looks
00:48:05via the
00:48:06smoke
00:48:07as if he
00:48:07might have
00:48:07dropped a
00:48:07valve
00:48:08or something
00:48:08so maybe
00:48:09he broke
00:48:09a valve
00:48:09spring
00:48:10forward
00:48:10which would
00:48:10just take
00:48:10a little bit
00:48:11of power
00:48:11off the
00:48:11engine
00:48:12which would
00:48:13explain how
00:48:13he slowed
00:48:14a little bit
00:48:14so once again
00:48:16James
00:48:16you're absolutely
00:48:16right
00:48:17Carlos Reutemann
00:48:18did have
00:48:18problems
00:48:18this morning
00:48:20he came in
00:48:20very angrily
00:48:21in the unofficial
00:48:22practice
00:48:22he had an engine
00:48:23with a water leak
00:48:24he went out
00:48:25in a spare car
00:48:26without even
00:48:26passing his
00:48:27safety belt
00:48:27he was in
00:48:28such a
00:48:28tizzy
00:48:29felt that they
00:48:31changed the
00:48:31engine of course
00:48:32but Reutemann
00:48:33the man who
00:48:33has finished
00:48:34seven of the
00:48:35nine Grands Prix
00:48:36this season
00:48:36is out of the
00:48:38race
00:48:38and that of course
00:48:39really affects
00:48:40the championship
00:48:41because Reutemann
00:48:42as every driver
00:48:43here forecast
00:48:44looked as if
00:48:45he was going
00:48:45to get more points
00:48:46that's the end
00:48:47of Reutemann's race
00:48:48it's last 29
00:48:50of the 45 lap race
00:48:51so Alan Jones
00:48:52is really
00:48:53going to close up
00:48:54to within 10 points
00:48:55of Reutemann
00:48:56now if he stays
00:48:57on the circuit
00:48:58yes
00:48:59this could be
00:49:00a very very important
00:49:01factor
00:49:02in the race
00:49:03for the world championship
00:49:04and whilst obviously
00:49:06it's very bad luck
00:49:07on Reutemann
00:49:07he's had
00:49:09his fair share
00:49:10of luck
00:49:11he's finished
00:49:12a huge number of races
00:49:13in the last
00:49:13season and a half
00:49:15and more
00:49:17than one would
00:49:19normally expect
00:49:20to other than
00:49:20with the aid
00:49:22of the God
00:49:22but it's awfully
00:49:23bad luck on him
00:49:24that the luck
00:49:24has deserted him
00:49:25at such a critical
00:49:26time
00:49:27that's Patrick
00:49:28Tambay's car
00:49:29in the pit
00:49:30it's a rear
00:49:35wheel bearing
00:49:36which is
00:49:36well that was
00:49:42Harold Ertel
00:49:43telling us
00:49:43that Patrick Tambay
00:49:44the man who
00:49:45left the Theodore
00:49:46team to drive
00:49:47for Talbot Ligier
00:49:48has pulled in
00:49:49with a rear
00:49:50bearing problem
00:49:50so this circuit
00:49:51is certainly
00:49:52taking its toll
00:49:53of entrance
00:49:53we've had of course
00:49:55the Carlos Reutemann problem
00:49:56we've had now
00:49:58the Patrick Tambay problem
00:50:00we've seen
00:50:00Andre Di Cesare's
00:50:01spin-off
00:50:01we've seen
00:50:02Dele go up once
00:50:03although Dele is now
00:50:04lying 21st
00:50:05but with 29 rounds gone
00:50:07here we see
00:50:08Alan Jones
00:50:09pleading
00:50:10he will have had the signal
00:50:11from his pit
00:50:12that Reutemann is out
00:50:13he'll say
00:50:14tough on my team mate
00:50:15but he'll know
00:50:16it's 9 points
00:50:17and 9 complete points
00:50:18to close
00:50:19on Carlos Reutemann
00:50:20so he'll only be
00:50:2110 points
00:50:22behind Reutemann
00:50:23now in the championship
00:50:24and of course
00:50:25we've got Holland
00:50:26we've got Hofstra
00:50:27we've got Italy
00:50:27we've got Montreal
00:50:28and it was confirmed
00:50:30this weekend
00:50:30that the last race
00:50:32of the season
00:50:33will indeed
00:50:33be around
00:50:34the Caesars Palace
00:50:35car park
00:50:36none other
00:50:36than Los Angeles
00:50:38John has obviously
00:50:52had problems
00:50:52he said the car
00:50:53wasn't happening
00:50:54well here
00:50:54we thought his luck
00:50:55had changed
00:50:56this morning
00:50:56when his car
00:50:57broke down
00:50:58in the other
00:50:58visual practice
00:50:59a failure
00:51:00which could have
00:51:00passed in the race
00:51:01but Watson
00:51:02who's been lapped
00:51:03by Alan Jones
00:51:03is now 10th
00:51:05and Nigel Mansell
00:51:08is 22nd
00:51:10just behind
00:51:11Derek Daly
00:51:12of Ireland
00:51:12who's 21st
00:51:14but Alan Jones
00:51:15is very much
00:51:16the man out in front
00:51:17on the 31st lap
00:51:19of this 45 lap race
00:51:21189 miles
00:51:23the 10th round
00:51:25of the world championship
00:51:2615 round championship
00:51:28and Jones
00:51:29and Jones
00:51:29who won the first round
00:51:30of Longley
00:51:31crosses the line
00:51:32at the end of 31 laps
00:51:34with a 9.7 line
00:51:37lead
00:51:37let's see
00:51:38he agreed with my stopwatch
00:51:4010 to 0.3 now
00:51:42Alan Jones
00:51:44ahead of Alan Cross
00:51:45star number 15
00:51:46the turbo-powered Renault
00:51:48but at least the Renault
00:51:49is still running
00:51:52and as I said earlier
00:51:53this is the first time
00:51:54if he completes
00:51:55the next 14 laps
00:51:57that the Renault
00:51:58has succeeded
00:51:59in finishing
00:51:59here at Hockenheim
00:52:00and if Alan Jones
00:52:02stays in that position
00:52:03and if
00:52:05Piquet stays third
00:52:06then the championship table
00:52:08would look like this
00:52:09this evening
00:52:10Reutemann 43 points
00:52:12Jones 33
00:52:13Piquet 30
00:52:15Jacques Lafitte
00:52:16in the Talbot
00:52:16Ligier
00:52:17who is now lying fourth
00:52:18will move up
00:52:19to 24 points
00:52:20Builder 21
00:52:22and Watson
00:52:23will be sixth
00:52:24equal with Prost
00:52:25with 19 points each
00:52:26John Watson
00:52:27in your picture now
00:52:28in the carbon fibre
00:52:30McLaren MP4
00:52:31so Alan Jones
00:52:35laughing there
00:52:38Jean-Pierre Jarrier
00:52:39Jarrier
00:52:40the man who's
00:52:40driven for Lotus
00:52:41the man who drove
00:52:42for Ligier
00:52:43and very well
00:52:43it must be said
00:52:44earlier in the season
00:52:45who thought he was
00:52:46out of Grand Prix racing
00:52:47but has been given
00:52:48a chance
00:52:49by the Italian
00:52:50Arcella team
00:52:50and has come back in
00:52:52and there you saw
00:52:53a flash of car 22
00:52:54that's Mario Andretti
00:52:56Andretti
00:52:57who's driven
00:52:58for just about everybody
00:52:59including Lotus
00:53:01and Ferrari
00:53:02now with Alfa Romeo
00:53:03but it must be said
00:53:04that Alfa Romeo
00:53:05must be praying
00:53:06for the turbo engine
00:53:07which we hear
00:53:08will be coming out
00:53:08probably at Monza
00:53:10Jones at the moment
00:53:11is quite happy
00:53:12with the 500 horsepower
00:53:14he's got
00:53:14from the Ford engine
00:53:15happy with the
00:53:16Patrick Head design
00:53:17Fadi Alaylan
00:53:18happy with the fact
00:53:20that he's in the lead
00:53:21and a little signal
00:53:23there at one of the tyres
00:53:24James
00:53:25is that going to be
00:53:25a tyre stop?
00:53:27Yes I think Alan Jones
00:53:28is pointing at his
00:53:29left front tyre there
00:53:30and we've got 13 laps to go
00:53:35and that's a long way
00:53:36round here
00:53:37and the left of the front tyre
00:53:38is the outside front tyre
00:53:40for a right-handed track
00:53:42such as this
00:53:42it's the tyre that takes
00:53:43the most strain
00:53:45the most of a bashing
00:53:46and that will be cause
00:53:48for a lot of concern
00:53:49for him
00:53:50I'm going to try
00:53:50and get a good look at it
00:53:51as he comes past
00:53:52if we can get a close-up shot
00:53:53of his car
00:53:53well he's got a 10.9 second lead
00:53:58over Alain Croce
00:53:59but we were saying
00:54:00he was happy with the engine
00:54:02happy with the car
00:54:02but he can't be happy
00:54:03with that tyre situation
00:54:04they changed tyres
00:54:06at the French Grand Prix
00:54:07back to the people
00:54:08they'd raced with last year
00:54:10they've had problems
00:54:10and there's another man
00:54:11with problems
00:54:12Tommy Borges
00:54:13in the 80s
00:54:15the man who finished
00:54:166 at Silverstone
00:54:17and gave the Avon fire
00:54:18to their first point
00:54:19into the pit
00:54:20now will he be followed
00:54:22very shortly
00:54:23on this
00:54:23the 33rd lap
00:54:24by Alan Jones
00:54:25James Hunt
00:54:26watching very closely
00:54:28in the autodrome
00:54:29as we've seen
00:54:29Watson, Guy and Jones
00:54:31in there
00:54:33James
00:54:33looking across the track
00:54:36I can see
00:54:37the very anxious faces
00:54:38in the Williams pit
00:54:38they're all prepared
00:54:39the mechanics are ready
00:54:40with their air guns
00:54:41and
00:54:42but it'll be
00:54:43an interesting thing
00:54:44to see if Alan
00:54:45actually tries to come in
00:54:47now let's see
00:54:48if we can get a look
00:54:48at his left front tyre
00:54:49unfortunately we're not
00:54:50in quite tight enough
00:54:51on the shot
00:54:52it doesn't
00:54:53look too badly
00:54:55but that might
00:54:56explain
00:54:56why Alan didn't
00:54:58open up a bigger lead
00:54:59because he went
00:55:00when he passed
00:55:01he started to go away
00:55:03like a rocket
00:55:03and then suddenly
00:55:04he was only edging away
00:55:06the gap
00:55:06he's still increasing
00:55:07his lead
00:55:08so I would think
00:55:09if he can find away
00:55:10look at that
00:55:10left front tyre
00:55:11it doesn't look
00:55:12too bad to me
00:55:12but it may just be
00:55:13chunking up
00:55:14or vibrating him
00:55:14on him a bit
00:55:16he's pointing again
00:55:18at it
00:55:18so maybe
00:55:20just informing
00:55:21the team
00:55:21of the problem
00:55:22so they know
00:55:23what they've got to do
00:55:24in the event
00:55:25that he does come in
00:55:26but I would think
00:55:27that especially
00:55:28while he's still
00:55:28going reasonably quickly
00:55:29which he is now
00:55:29he will try
00:55:30and stay out there
00:55:31but the only problem
00:55:32with that
00:55:32sort of assumption
00:55:33is of course
00:55:34he does
00:55:35take a risk
00:55:36of a possible blowout
00:55:37Nelson Piquet
00:55:38on the same
00:55:39make of start
00:55:39had a failure
00:55:40at Silverstone
00:55:40when he was going
00:55:41very well
00:55:42which pitched him
00:55:42into the barrier
00:55:44and out of the race
00:55:45and of course
00:55:45that's a potentially
00:55:46dangerous situation
00:55:47as well as
00:55:47losing in the race
00:55:48if you do that
00:55:49so Alan will be
00:55:50a very worried man
00:55:51in fact James
00:55:52Alan Jones
00:55:53could have been
00:55:53pointing at tyres
00:55:54because of the weather
00:55:55if you look down
00:55:56the pit road
00:55:57from here
00:55:58you can see
00:55:59as we see
00:55:59he's on the 11 second lead
00:56:00that people are
00:56:01putting umbrellas
00:56:02up in the pit
00:56:02and some people
00:56:03sitting down
00:56:04in front of us
00:56:04in the grandstand
00:56:05are putting umbrellas
00:56:06up
00:56:06there could just be
00:56:07a segasy of rain
00:56:08we don't want
00:56:09to be alarmed
00:56:10we certainly
00:56:10don't want to
00:56:11Dijon
00:56:11James
00:56:12what do you think?
00:56:13well I think
00:56:14if Alan has
00:56:16tyre problems
00:56:16and that is rain
00:56:18then of course
00:56:19that will be
00:56:21to his advantage
00:56:21because the rain
00:56:22will cool the
00:56:23track surface
00:56:23that will cool
00:56:24the tyre
00:56:25it will take
00:56:25the strain
00:56:27of the friction
00:56:28obviously
00:56:29off the tyre
00:56:29and of course
00:56:30if it rains hard
00:56:31although the sky
00:56:32certainly doesn't
00:56:32look as if that's
00:56:33likely to happen
00:56:34but if it does
00:56:35rain decently
00:56:36enough to make
00:56:37the track properly
00:56:38wet
00:56:38then they are
00:56:38liable to stop
00:56:39the race
00:56:39and that will
00:56:40hand victory
00:56:41to Alan
00:56:41on a plate
00:56:42if they've
00:56:43completed
00:56:43their 75%
00:56:45of the distance
00:56:46well in fact
00:56:47they have to
00:56:48complete 34 laps
00:56:49as this is
00:56:50the 34th lap
00:56:51so if the race
00:56:52did stop
00:56:53and if Alan
00:56:54Jones did have
00:56:54a problem
00:56:55perhaps he'd be
00:56:56a very happy man
00:56:57but there are
00:56:57certainly some
00:56:57umbrellas going up
00:56:58in the pit
00:56:59Alan Jones
00:57:00is certainly
00:57:00not slowing down
00:57:01he's certainly
00:57:02got an 11 second
00:57:03lead over
00:57:04Alan Frost
00:57:05Nelson Piquet
00:57:06third
00:57:07Jack Lafitte
00:57:08fourth
00:57:08Hector
00:57:09back fifth
00:57:10and Eddie
00:57:10Cheever
00:57:11sixth
00:57:11chord
00:57:16and Eddie
00:57:17cam
00:57:18with eight
00:57:20others
00:57:23misty
00:57:26yeah
00:57:26he就會
00:57:27use all our
00:57:28in the
00:57:29ORT
00:57:31he has a
00:57:34way to
00:57:35under
00:57:36him
00:57:36I
00:57:37mean
00:57:37and
00:57:38show it
00:57:39I
00:57:40You, you know what he wants
00:57:51He's gonna be, get many
00:57:57You, you know what he wants
00:58:04Cause he's gonna be, get many
00:58:12Nine left to go, 36 plus hours at the moment
00:58:20Nelson Piquet fighting for second place in your picture with Alain Cross
00:58:24Alain Jones out in the lead, but, and a very big but
00:58:27Pointing from the pits and from the officials
00:58:30But he could be raining out there, so if Piquet wants to get past Alain Cross
00:58:35And prevent the smaller thing that has the siege on, he's got to do it now
00:58:40Since you left us, Carlos Reutemann, the man who leads the World Championship
00:58:44Parked sadly by the side of the road in his Saudi Leyland
00:58:47Alain Jones, who you've seen overtake, Cross
00:58:50Leads by eight seconds of Alain Cross into your picture now in car number 15
00:58:55Nelson Piquet in the battle is third
00:58:57Jack Lapite is fourth
00:58:59Hector Rivack in the battle is fifth
00:59:01Eddie Cheever in the turtle is sixth
00:59:03And John Watson has moved up to tenth place
00:59:06Going to the Grand Prix
00:59:10Last 36, you're looking at John Watson in tenth place
00:59:13Some specks of rain on the track
00:59:15But they are not flowing this enormous battle
00:59:17Between Alain Cross and Nelson Piquet in the second place
00:59:18There it is, you see the two cars almost as one
00:59:20Alan Cross in car number 15 to Renault
00:59:23It's eight seconds behind Alain Jones
00:59:25But Nelson Piquet is just there in your picture
00:59:27You can see how close his front wheel is to gearbox
00:59:29James, another superb fuel
00:59:31Yes, fantastic stuff and it's really livened up though
00:59:33Because the track is greasy
00:59:35Or certainly was a lap ago
00:59:37And Piquet is coming through
00:59:39But he's still got a bit of a way to go
00:59:40And that Renault is very powerful
00:59:41But I think Piquet has made it this time
00:59:42Now, the situation is now
00:59:43Now, the situation is now
00:59:44And it's now
00:59:45It's now
00:59:46It's now
00:59:47It's now
00:59:48It's now
00:59:49It's now
00:59:50It's now
00:59:51It's now
00:59:52It's now
00:59:53It's now
00:59:54It's now
00:59:55It's now
00:59:56It's now
00:59:57It's now
00:59:58It's now
00:59:59It's now
01:00:00It's now
01:00:01It's now
01:00:02And Piquet is coming through
01:00:03But he's still got a bit of a way to go
01:00:05And that Renault is very powerful
01:00:06But I think Piquet has made it this time
01:00:07Now
01:00:08The situation is getting very interesting indeed
01:00:11Because Alain Jones
01:00:12As you would expect the leader with a bit of road in hand
01:00:15Has taken it a bit easy
01:00:17And they've closed the gap just a little bit on Jones
01:00:20The track got greasy
01:00:21Nelson Piquet
01:00:22Nelson Piquet
01:00:23Threw very well on the greasy surface
01:00:25And has taken advantage of that little light showering
01:00:28To finally find a way around Alain Frost
01:00:31And now we've got to watch and see if he can pull away
01:00:33And I'm sure he will do
01:00:34But can he do anything about Alain Jones?
01:00:36Jones, we know
01:00:37Is in a bit of tyre trouble
01:00:38He's been pointing at his left front tyre
01:00:40A greasy surface should help to protect that tyre
01:00:43From further wear and tear
01:00:45But I don't think it's raining anymore
01:00:48It's very hard to tell from where we are up in the grandstand
01:00:51The cars don't seem to be sliding about quite so much as they were a lap ago
01:00:54And I think it was just a little flip
01:00:56And maybe it'll all dry up
01:00:58Which of course will be very worrying for Jones if he's got a dodgy tyre
01:01:02So only 40 miles to go before the end of this 190 mile Grand Prix
01:01:08And Alain Jones must be getting signal shorted
01:01:10And the man there in the Parvalas Grabham
01:01:12Nelson Piquet of Brazil
01:01:14Is now in second place
01:01:15Ahead of Alain Frost in the Renault
01:01:17And there's no love lost between Nelson Piquet and Alain Jones
01:01:21They fought each other
01:01:22Tremendous duel last year for the World Championship
01:01:25Piquet of course has already won two races this year
01:01:29Piquet won in Argentine
01:01:31Won again in San Marino
01:01:33Jones going for his second victory
01:01:35And he crosses the line at the end of lap 38
01:01:38With the order
01:01:39First Jones
01:01:40Then Piquet
01:01:41Then Proce
01:01:42Then Lapique
01:01:43Then Rebac
01:01:45And then Cheever
01:01:46And the gap between Alain Jones and Nelson Piquet James
01:01:49Is only 5.2
01:01:51As Piquet passes the backmarters to get closer to him
01:01:54Yes he pulled over three seconds on Alain Jones on that one lap
01:01:57Now is that Jones thing very circumspect on the damn track
01:02:00With a little bit in hand
01:02:02If it drives out or if Piquet gets right to him
01:02:04Or is Jones in real trouble
01:02:06Possibly with his left front tyre
01:02:08As we've been suspecting from his gesticulations
01:02:10As he goes past his pit
01:02:12A few laps ago
01:02:14But they are now within sight of each other
01:02:17Piquet I think is nearly close enough for Jones
01:02:19To start seeing him looming in his mirrors
01:02:21So at least he'll have the chance to watch
01:02:23But it must be a very worried Alain Jones indeed right now
01:02:28And as they're on lap 38
01:02:31It's less than a second a lap
01:02:33That Nelson Piquet needs to make up
01:02:35To catch and pass his old rival Alain Jones
01:02:37And I'm sure James will agree
01:02:39Catching is one thing
01:02:40Passing is another
01:02:41But you can see they're both in the same picture
01:02:43As we see pro sweet past Elio De Angelis
01:02:46Who by the way is lying seventh in the Lotus 87
01:02:49No Lotus 88 here
01:02:52So Alain Jones will be getting a signal
01:02:54Every time he comes past the fit
01:02:56Warning him about the approach of Nelson Piquet
01:02:59The Brazilian in the Brabham
01:03:01Who fortunately was not hurt in that big action
01:03:03The Silverstone
01:03:04A man who really wishes to lay claim
01:03:06To the championship
01:03:08And he'd be marvellous if he did well here
01:03:10Just Carlos Reutemann was the last man to win in Germany
01:03:12And you can see that whatever the computer score says
01:03:16There cannot be more than two and a half seconds between them now James
01:03:19Just that because I'll write on Jones' tail
01:03:22So I have to assume that Jones is in quite serious trouble
01:03:28I'm going to have a listen to the engine though
01:03:33Well I think Jones' engine sounds a bit rough
01:03:36I think Jones is in engine trouble
01:03:38Let's see
01:03:39What happens as they go up the straight
01:03:41We should be able to see by how the gap
01:03:43Alters
01:03:44If Jones falls back
01:03:45I think
01:03:46Well he seems to be keeping up all right
01:03:49That's
01:03:51Slimborger going up there
01:03:53But the thing that matters is that Nelson Piquet
01:03:55On the 39th lap of a 45 lap race
01:03:57Has passed Jones
01:03:58And the world champion that once again
01:04:00Seems to be in trouble here at Hockenheim
01:04:02Last year
01:04:12Behind Watson in 8th place is Elio De Angelis
01:04:15Followed by Jarrier, Andretti, Villeneuve and Stuart
01:04:21So Nelson Piquet on lap 40 of this 45 lap race
01:04:27In the lead
01:04:28A man who seemed to be dropping back when he was in 4th place
01:04:31There you see the order again
01:04:33Piquet across
01:04:34Jones, Le Piquet
01:04:35Back in Chiva
01:04:36The fastest lap still belongs to Alan Jones
01:04:39But you need more than a past lap now
01:04:41To overtake both Piquet and Froese
01:04:44To regain the 9 points that seem to be his
01:04:47Until
01:04:48With less than 40 miles to go
01:04:50Everything happened at once
01:04:52And he lost out not only to Piquet
01:04:54But to Froese
01:04:55Perhaps it's a tyre
01:04:56Perhaps he should have come into the pit
01:04:58Or perhaps it's something more serious James
01:05:00But Jones
01:05:01Has certainly got problems
01:05:02And could be falling into the clutches
01:05:04As you have to the pit
01:05:06He's got
01:05:07Over 40 seconds on the pit at the moment
01:05:10And
01:05:11I think his problems
01:05:13Such as
01:05:14They might be
01:05:15Would have to get worse
01:05:16And slow him down more
01:05:17If he was going to
01:05:19Be caught by the pit
01:05:20But of course
01:05:21That's always a worry
01:05:22I think Jones would be happy
01:05:23To zip his car home
01:05:24He's coming round the stadium now
01:05:26And I will actually
01:05:27As Alan Frost
01:05:29Soldiering on
01:05:30I will just take my cans off
01:05:32And have a listen to his engines
01:05:33To see if that's the trouble
01:05:36While James has listened to Nelson Piquet
01:05:38We're watching Nelson Piquet
01:05:40And looking once again
01:05:42For the fourth time
01:05:43At our revised championship point
01:05:45And if in fact
01:05:47The order stays as it is at the moment
01:05:49Reutemann 43 points
01:05:51Piquet would have 35
01:05:52Jones 28
01:05:54And the feet 24
01:05:55James
01:05:56Well
01:05:57I had a listen to Alan Jones
01:05:58And yesterday
01:05:59His engines are misfiring very badly
01:06:00It sounds extremely rough
01:06:02So
01:06:03He will now be keeping his fingers crossed
01:06:05He can lift the thing to the line already
01:06:07In touch
01:06:08Temperature high
01:06:09If you remember
01:06:10He had a fuel feed problem
01:06:12Very near the end of the Monte Carlo Grand Prix
01:06:14This was one of the
01:06:16Firepillers
01:06:17One of his finest drives
01:06:18He drove absolutely marvelously there
01:06:20And then was robbed
01:06:21Of a certain victory
01:06:22Close to the end of the race
01:06:23When
01:06:24His
01:06:25Fuel system
01:06:26Was vaporising
01:06:27Or whatever it was doing
01:06:28He wasn't getting his full dose of fuel
01:06:29Into the
01:06:30Inlets of the engine
01:06:31And
01:06:32It sounds to me
01:06:33Like that
01:06:34It could of course be electrical
01:06:35They sound much the same
01:06:36But whatever it is
01:06:37I don't think Alan really cares
01:06:39His main
01:06:40Concern now
01:06:41Will be to hang on
01:06:42To his third race
01:06:43And
01:06:44To the record
01:06:45But
01:06:46An even
01:06:47Stronger emotion
01:06:48Must be of
01:06:49Despair and disappointment
01:06:50After
01:06:51A really fine drive
01:06:52And
01:06:53A drive that really deserved the victory
01:06:55A great shame for Alan
01:06:56Well they are on the
01:06:5841st lap
01:06:59Of the 45 lap
01:07:00Race
01:07:01And
01:07:02Nelson
01:07:03TK
01:07:04The
01:07:0520 year 8 road from Brazil
01:07:06Who
01:07:07Rather interesting
01:07:08Nelson
01:07:09TK
01:07:10Had to choose motor racing
01:07:11Instead of tennis
01:07:12Instead of soccer
01:07:13And Alan Jones
01:07:14Sitting in third place
01:07:15And Alan Jones
01:07:16Sitting in third place
01:07:17The Twister
01:07:18Both of them have chosen
01:07:19The other four
01:07:20Cruel luck for Alan Jones
01:07:21But perhaps
01:07:22Nelson
01:07:23TK
01:07:24Who is
01:07:254.41 seconds
01:07:26Deserves
01:07:27Deserves a little bit of luck
01:07:28He certainly ran out of it
01:07:29At the end of last season
01:07:31And remember that
01:07:32Piquet
01:07:33Took up a tremendous challenge
01:07:35When he stepped in
01:07:36To the
01:07:37Graven seat of Lauda
01:07:38Montreal
01:07:39In 1979
01:07:40He's done 44 Grand Prix
01:07:42He's had 5 victories
01:07:43And he looks at the moment
01:07:44As if he's on his way
01:07:45To a sixth
01:07:46He won in Long Beach
01:07:48Holland
01:07:49And Italy last year
01:07:50To finish second in the championship
01:07:51He definitely wants to
01:07:53Win here
01:07:54To help him win it this time
01:07:56As I said
01:07:57There's a little bit of needle
01:07:58Between Jones and himself
01:07:59But Jones is far too far behind
01:08:01Now to do anything about it
01:08:03Some half a minute
01:08:04Behind Nelson
01:08:05Piquet
01:08:06And with 4.42 laps completed
01:08:08The order
01:08:09Piquet
01:08:10Prost
01:08:11Jones
01:08:12Lafitte's rib-action leaver
01:08:14Watson
01:08:15De Angelis
01:08:16Gerrier
01:08:17And Andretti
01:08:18Well I think Jones
01:08:20Is unlikely now to make it
01:08:22Even in third place
01:08:23He's off
01:08:24Over 10 seconds
01:08:26On the last lap
01:08:27For Jacques Lafitte
01:08:28Lafitte is now
01:08:29Only 19 seconds
01:08:31Behind him
01:08:32And that really means
01:08:34At the current range of progress
01:08:36Lafitte is going to gobble him up
01:08:37In plenty of time
01:08:38And that's
01:08:40It's just
01:08:41I'm speechless
01:08:42I know exactly how he feels
01:08:43Things like this
01:08:44Patent in Grand Prix racing
01:08:45But
01:08:46They've happened to Alan Jones
01:08:47With totally unfair
01:08:48Regularity
01:08:49This year
01:08:50And he must be
01:08:51Feeling
01:08:52Just absolutely
01:08:53Just absolutely
01:08:54Descent
01:08:55And
01:08:56Nelson Piquet
01:08:57Who's also driven a very good race
01:08:59He's been a bit unlucky recently
01:09:01And he's had a bad run
01:09:03He's looked very very good this year
01:09:05To the last four or five Grand Prix's
01:09:07Everything's gone wrong for him as well
01:09:09And
01:09:10But
01:09:11Today
01:09:12Things look pretty good so far
01:09:14He's now
01:09:15Has only mechanical failure
01:09:17And
01:09:18His own
01:09:19Danger of making an error
01:09:20Between him and the chequered flag
01:09:22And I don't think Piquet's going to make a mistake now
01:09:24That's no danger of that
01:09:25He's experienced
01:09:26Cool
01:09:27And
01:09:28He'll be keeping the car on the road
01:09:29And
01:09:30Keeping his fingers crossed
01:09:3142 laps completed
01:09:35They're on their 43rd lap
01:09:36And
01:09:37Piquet
01:09:38Has a 6.41
01:09:39Second lead
01:09:40Over
01:09:41Alan Prost
01:09:42And Alan Jones
01:09:43As we sadly predicted
01:09:44Is getting
01:09:45Overhauled
01:09:46More and more
01:09:47By Jack Lafitte
01:09:48In fourth place
01:09:49In the goal
01:09:50Back in the Brabham
01:09:51And his fifth
01:09:52He could be a first and fifth
01:09:53For the British Brabham team
01:09:54At Eddie Cheever 6
01:09:57Well Alan Jones
01:09:58Now has the beat
01:09:59Right on his tail
01:10:00He's lost 20 seconds
01:10:01In that lap
01:10:02And he's coming into the fifth
01:10:03Alan Jones
01:10:04And
01:10:05I'd have given up the unequal struggle
01:10:06He's come in to put fuel in
01:10:08And
01:10:09You can see by the way
01:10:10His head's rocking
01:10:11That the car is going
01:10:12Burp burp burp burp like this
01:10:13And
01:10:14It's
01:10:15Absolutely disastrous
01:10:16Obviously he was
01:10:17Probably quite lucky
01:10:18To limp round that last lap
01:10:19I don't know what they're doing
01:10:20They're probably
01:10:21Stuffing it
01:10:22As much fuel as they can get into
01:10:23In a short space of time
01:10:24No they've actually got the engine cover off
01:10:26I'm having
01:10:27A look at that
01:10:28But
01:10:29Anyway
01:10:30That's no points for Jones
01:10:31I'm afraid
01:10:32That could of course mean James
01:10:33That John Watson
01:10:34Moves up into sixth position
01:10:35John Watson lying seventh at the moment
01:10:37It does look as if Alan Jones
01:10:39Is going to stay in the pit
01:10:40And I suddenly don't envy
01:10:41Harold Ertel
01:10:42The
01:10:43German sports car driver
01:10:44Who's trying to speak to him
01:10:45I don't think Alan Jones
01:10:46I don't think Alan Jones will be in a very friendly move at the moment
01:10:49Bit of disappointment
01:10:50A long long time since this team
01:10:52Has suffered that sort of disappointment
01:10:54One of the most reliable teams in motor racing
01:10:57And no finishes then for the
01:11:04Oh yeah
01:11:05As Jones is going out again
01:11:06I apologise to Frank Williams
01:11:07And all the team
01:11:08He's going to go back out
01:11:10It'll be very easy to see where he comes up on our computer
01:11:13It certainly still seems to be misfiring
01:11:16But we're on the 44th lap
01:11:18The penultimate lap of this 45 lap race
01:11:21And the man, Nelson Piquet
01:11:23In your picture now
01:11:24Is not only leading the race
01:11:26But certainly changing the face of this year's world championship
01:11:30As this would be his third victory
01:11:33So two laps to go
01:11:38In fact only one and three quarters
01:11:40For Nelson Piquet
01:11:45Alain Prost in second place
01:11:47Jacques Lapique
01:11:48Moved up to third place
01:11:49So a good day for the French
01:11:50Second and third
01:11:51Alan Jones at the moment
01:11:53Registering fourth from the computer
01:11:55Hector Ebert fifth
01:11:56Eddie Chivas sixth
01:11:57John McWatson seventh
01:11:59One lap behind
01:12:00And I don't think that Alan Jones lost
01:12:02A whole lap there
01:12:04As we come up
01:12:05To the end
01:12:07Of the last lap that won
01:12:09With Alan Prost obviously happy with his six points
01:12:13Nelson Piquet obviously delighted with his points
01:12:16And John Watson
01:12:17Probably not going to be able to improve on his position in seventh place
01:12:23A tremendously dramatic race
01:12:25First René Arnau out in the first lap
01:12:28Carlos Reutemann
01:12:29Suddenly pulling up with engine failure
01:12:31Alan Jones
01:12:32Alan Jones
01:12:33Overtaking Alan Prost
01:12:34Because of a seeming mistake
01:12:36By René Arnau
01:12:37Nelson Piquet starting a charge through the field
01:12:40And Alan Jones
01:12:42Hardly striking trouble
01:12:45With about 40 miles to go
01:12:47But the result of it all
01:12:48Is that Nelson Piquet
01:12:50Is now leading this German Grand Prix
01:12:53The tenth round of the world championship
01:12:56In Lebrun
01:12:57As they come across the line
01:12:58To start the last lap
01:13:03According to my watch
01:13:04He's got an 8.9 second lead
01:13:07Over Alan Prost
01:13:08Nelson Piquet on the last lap
01:13:10What will he be thinking now James?
01:13:12Well I think Piquet will be thinking just about getting the car right
01:13:17In fact both drivers will
01:13:18They're just not in position to overtake one another
01:13:21They're too far apart
01:13:23They'll be just keeping their fingers crossed
01:13:24They don't run out of petrol
01:13:25Or anything dramatic happens
01:13:27It's been a little bit of a lucky race for Nelson Piquet
01:13:31But he was always there and thereabouts
01:13:33He was running competitively with the leaders all the time
01:13:36He took advantage of their misfortune
01:13:38And it's a very fair and deserved victory
01:13:41Because as I say
01:13:42He was always up there
01:13:43And it's nice to see Piquet back
01:13:45He had a bad run recently
01:13:46I think he's found things rather tough going
01:13:50It's certainly seen as the pressure in a way more off than you
01:13:54But this will restore his confidence
01:13:57And I think it is reasonably true and fair to say
01:14:00That Nelson Piquet lets us if he's back
01:14:02His confidence will be back
01:14:03And that's a very nice thing
01:14:05Terribly bad luck on Alan Jones
01:14:07A fine drive by Alan Prost
01:14:09In a tough car to drive
01:14:11Because it's hard work to drive that turbo René around
01:14:13And he'll be pretty pleased with second
01:14:16The problem he had with his teammate René Arnoux
01:14:19Which helped Jones through into the lead
01:14:21Will probably be forgotten now
01:14:22Because I think Alan Prost will realise
01:14:24That when that rain came down
01:14:25He was going to be swallowed up anyway
01:14:27So he'll be very happy with a good second place
01:14:31Nelson Piquet in the motordrome
01:14:33In front of 80,000 people
01:14:3552,000 of them seated
01:14:37But not at a moment
01:14:38They're on their feet
01:14:39To cheer the victory by the 28 year old gravel driver
01:14:42Nelson Piquet coming in to win his third Grand Prix of the season
01:14:47In the gravel
01:14:48The Ford-powered Carmelan gravel
01:14:50With a BMW turbo up their sleeves
01:14:52He comes along to take the finishing fly
01:14:55You'll hear the cheer
01:14:56Nelson Piquet has won the German Grand Prix
01:15:00Second is this man, Alan Prost
01:15:03And John Watson sitting behind him
01:15:05Has actually finished sixth to get a world championship point
01:15:08So second, Alan Prost in the Renault
01:15:11Third, this man, Jacques Lafitte in the Talbot Ligier
01:15:15Fourth behind him will be yet another gravel driver
01:15:18Hector Rayback
01:15:20Getting his best ever result
01:15:22Eddie Cheever at the UFA
01:15:24Will be fifth in the Tyrell
01:15:25And John Watson, sixth in the Marlboro McLaren
01:15:29And poor old Alan Jones
01:15:30Because of that pit stop
01:15:32Is one lap behind
01:15:33And has finished ninth
01:15:35So no points today for the Tag Williams team
01:15:38But nine points for Nelson Piquet
01:15:41And a changed championship
01:15:43Which according to my reckoning
01:15:45Is Reutemann 43
01:15:47Piquet 35
01:15:48Lafitte
01:15:49The man in your picture now
01:15:5025
01:15:51Alan Jones 24
01:15:53Gilles Villeneuve 21
01:15:55Watson has moved up to 20
01:15:57And Prost 19
01:15:59A tremendously dramatic
01:16:01Being able
01:16:05This year
01:16:06Our team
01:16:08Who have been
01:16:10And the first or larger
01:16:11Of the team
01:16:12We awakens
01:16:13We awakens
01:16:14The other team
01:16:15Is the most powerful
01:16:16Like the old
01:16:17We have been
01:16:18And the last one
01:16:18The last one
01:16:19Was the worst
01:16:20We have been
01:16:21We were out
01:16:22And the last one
01:16:23We're back
01:16:24And the last one
01:16:25We were home
01:16:26We had a very
01:16:27We were playing
