00:00:00Row three, and row four, Watson in the Marlborough, Pironi in the Ferrari.
00:00:06And away they go now on the warm-up lap, and here's James Hunt.
00:00:11And then, well, off they go, and see you go.
00:00:15Buzz the craft as well, as it begins.
00:00:20James, quite specifically, is that they have to put chicanes in to throw the cars down.
00:00:25Now they're running up what used to be a very fast straight, but there's a chicanes just in front.
00:00:29And there's the first chicane.
00:00:30It's usually quite exciting after the start here, with the whole grid funneling down into that narrow bit.
00:00:37They've come out of that left-right-left chicane.
00:00:40That's the Curva-Grandi, famous corner, of course, in the modern cars with all that grip.
00:00:44The corner's completely flat out. It's not really a corner for them at all.
00:00:48Remember, of course, they're not racing at the moment.
00:00:49There was Reutemann just heading the field down there.
00:00:52They're coming down to yet another chicane, which again was put in to slow the cars down
00:00:56to make the circuit that much more safe, because it was really too fast and not necessary to be that fast.
00:01:01Not a test of skill when there are no corners.
00:01:04Just a little left-right chicane, quite slow.
00:01:06Second gear, they take that in.
00:01:08And then they go up into the two Lesmo corners, which are very difficult corners.
00:01:14In fact, unfortunately, we missed those in the camera.
00:01:16That's the second one.
00:01:16It's the first one you see them coming out of, disappearing into the second one.
00:01:19Two very fast-ish right-handers, very difficult.
00:01:22You've got a lot of shadow there.
00:01:23When it's sunny, the trees cast shadows, which make the light conditions very difficult.
00:01:28Now they're coming up to the final official chicane, which is put in a little bit of a board
00:01:33to take the pace off the circuit and give them something to do
00:01:37instead of just sitting there, getting bored down long straight.
00:01:43This one's a little bit faster.
00:01:44But this chicane's taken in third gear, and it's quite bumpy around there.
00:01:48The car's bouncing about quite a bit, especially in this day and age.
00:01:52They've come right down the other straight now.
00:01:54In this day and age, when they have practically no suspension in order to keep there,
00:01:58so they no longer have sliding skirts, in order to keep the chassis close to the ground
00:02:04at the constant level to get the downforce that they want.
00:02:08And they're running into the front corner, onto the straight again.
00:02:17That's about third or fourth gear, quite a fast one.
00:02:20It opens out nice and wide.
00:02:22It's a very important corner to get in that busy right-handers.
00:02:25Once you've got in it right, it's quite an easy corner.
00:02:27And now there's Polman, Arnu, just coming slowly down,
00:02:36let the black markers catch up so they don't have to sit for too long
00:02:39on the grid with engines potentially boiling.
00:02:42Of course, racing cars have no fan for the radiator.
00:02:45They depend on moving.
00:02:47And he wants the whole field to be up there.
00:02:49And of course, he doesn't want to sit there with his clutch slipping all the time,
00:02:54getting hotter as well.
00:02:57The weather is dry, but we have feared rain earlier on.
00:03:01And the start, as I say, is going to be very critical.
00:03:03The turbocharged weather might not be a bit slow off the line.
00:03:07And if Charles Reutemann, on the left of your picture,
00:03:12but above Arnu, can get away quickly
00:03:16and beat Prost and Arnu into the first chicane,
00:03:20that is to say, no, he could put himself in a good position.
00:03:23There's going to be a tremendous blast of noise
00:03:27when those lights go from red to green.
00:03:30Now, about less than seven seconds.
00:03:43Prost and Arnu into the chicane.
00:03:47And it's Arnu taking the lead from...
00:03:50And Reutemann in third position.
00:03:54Didier Pironi in fourth place.
00:03:56There is Bruno Giacomelli.
00:03:58The two Renaults are now spreading out across the circuit.
00:04:02And Reutemann is trying to drive,
00:04:03and he is indeed succeeding and driving around the outside of the Renault
00:04:07and up into second place.
00:04:09Terrific performance.
00:04:10Pironi is in fourth place.
00:04:12Lafitte jockeys for position.
00:04:14And as they come down to the second chicane,
00:04:18it's Reutemann in second place,
00:04:19it's Pironi and the Ferrari in third place,
00:04:21and challenging for second,
00:04:23Lafitte weaving,
00:04:24and away goes the Renault,
00:04:26round the first of the Lesbobens,
00:04:29round the second Lesbobens,
00:04:31and now down to the Villaloni,
00:04:34the left-hander,
00:04:34and then to Ascari,
00:04:36which he's on his way to now,
00:04:38and Jack Lafitte is really moving that Talbot around.
00:04:43And Pironi challenging for second place.
00:04:45Going to try and take...
00:04:47And he's done it.
00:04:47Pironi up into second place,
00:04:49ahead of Carlos Reutemann,
00:04:50down into third position.
00:04:52Then the redder.
00:04:52Alan Jones is in fourth place.
00:04:55Jack Lafitte is in fifth place.
00:04:57And there's a roar of excitement and approval from the crowd
00:05:00as they hear that Pironi has moved up into second place,
00:05:04and is he going to be able to challenge the Renault
00:05:06as he comes out of the parabolica
00:05:08at the end of lap one,
00:05:10with 52 laps to go.
00:05:12Car number 28, Pironi in second position.
00:05:16And it's flashing down the straight now,
00:05:18the Renault pulling away,
00:05:21and Bill Reutemann...
00:05:23No.
00:05:30Well, that's a truly fantastic first lap
00:05:41by Didier Pironi.
00:05:43He used the power of the Ferrari
00:05:45to a perfect advantage there.
00:05:48What happens on the first lap
00:05:49is that the lead drivers tend to take
00:05:51a little bit steadily around the corners
00:05:52until they've got their towers warmed up and things.
00:05:55And the Ferrari doesn't handle so well,
00:05:56but Pironi was able to keep up with them
00:05:58around the corners,
00:05:59and then blast past them on the straight.
00:06:01And he's come right up
00:06:02from his grip position into second place.
00:06:05And he's now going to be a very difficult man to pass,
00:06:07as usual,
00:06:07because of the power of the Ferrari.
00:06:10I don't think he's going to be a threat
00:06:11to the Renault,
00:06:12who's building a little lead in front of him,
00:06:13because, quite frankly,
00:06:14the chassis, as the others settle down,
00:06:16I think Pironi is going to struggle
00:06:18to keep his place,
00:06:19but the others are going to have
00:06:20the usual terrible fight
00:06:21to try and get past him
00:06:22because of that power advantage
00:06:24that he enjoys.
00:06:25But he's going very well at the moment.
00:06:26So, Alain Prost leading,
00:06:29and incidentally,
00:06:30we just have to stop talking
00:06:32as the car passes grandstand's position
00:06:34because the noise
00:06:35bounces back off the roof,
00:06:37but Pironi in a stirring second place
00:06:41behind Alain Prost.
00:06:42Carlos Reutemann is still in third place,
00:06:44and there is Alan Jones
00:06:45on the right of your picture
00:06:47in, what, sixth position.
00:06:49Prost goes through,
00:06:50Pironi second,
00:06:51Reutemann third,
00:06:52Arnoux fourth,
00:06:53Jacques Lafitte fifth,
00:06:55Alain Jones sixth,
00:06:56then Gilles Villeneuve
00:06:57in fifth position.
00:06:58This is the end of lap two.
00:07:00The man who is leading
00:07:01at the end of lap two
00:07:02is Alain Prost,
00:07:04to one in Holland,
00:07:05there to one in France.
00:07:06He goes across the line.
00:07:08There is Pironi,
00:07:10Alain Pironi,
00:07:11your voice of Prost is done
00:07:12in the right of my voice.
00:07:15Then Jacques Lafitte,
00:07:17and the two notices
00:07:18are halfway down the field
00:07:20as the tail end of glass through,
00:07:23and last at the press moment
00:07:25is Mark Schürer,
00:07:28who's been,
00:07:29it's Eddie Kiva,
00:07:29Eddie Kiva,
00:07:30Mark Schürer,
00:07:31non-started incidentally,
00:07:33just failed to qualify,
00:07:34and now,
00:07:35look how Carlos Reutemann
00:07:36is closing up on Pironi
00:07:38and trying to take second place,
00:07:39and all the time,
00:07:41Alain Prost is easing away
00:07:43from the battle
00:07:44behind the Ferrari,
00:07:46because as James said,
00:07:48Pironi is in effect,
00:07:50as he has been before,
00:07:51a mobile chicane.
00:07:53This is what happened
00:07:54in the Spanish Grand Prix,
00:07:56when Gilles,
00:07:57Biel,
00:07:57and also in Monaco,
00:08:01because nobody can get past
00:08:02the Ferrari,
00:08:03tremendously fast on the straight.
00:08:06Parnu is still in fourth position,
00:08:09Reutemann is still third,
00:08:10Lafitte is still fifth,
00:08:11Biel Nerve is up into sixth position
00:08:13ahead of Alain Jones' seventh,
00:08:15as Giacanelli eighth,
00:08:17and Nelson Piquet is in ninth position.
00:08:20Now,
00:08:21coming out of the Ascari bend,
00:08:23down the long run
00:08:24to the Paral-Malika,
00:08:26this is 160 miles an hour,
00:08:29down to the third gear right-hander,
00:08:31the Paral-Malika.
00:08:33There's Biel Nerve through,
00:08:34and Jones,
00:08:35and Giacanelli,
00:08:35and Piquet,
00:08:36and John Watson,
00:08:37and De Angelis,
00:08:38and Nigel Mantle,
00:08:39and Daly,
00:08:40and Giacanelli,
00:08:41there is Patrese,
00:08:43Gerrier goes through,
00:08:45three laps completed,
00:08:47cross the end,
00:08:48and Arnoux is challenging
00:08:50for third position.
00:08:52Arnoux through,
00:08:54ahead of Carlos Troikens,
00:08:56in third place.
00:08:57Italian Grand Prix of 1981 here at Monza,
00:09:11leading the two Renaults,
00:09:13which is something that we're getting quite used to these days,
00:09:16and in third position,
00:09:18Didier Pironi.
00:09:19I think Lafitte's got a particularly big problem now,
00:09:22he's going very well indeed,
00:09:23but when he passed Reutemann,
00:09:24he became out of the Paral-Malika,
00:09:26quicker than Reutemann,
00:09:27and then actually was re-passed,
00:09:30actually, by Reutemann on the straight,
00:09:31so I think Lafitte is not very quick in a straight line,
00:09:34so he's got an even bigger problem than any of the others.
00:09:36He's now leading the normally aspirated race,
00:09:39and he's got Pironi, of course, to set about.
00:09:46And Alain Prost has made the fastest lap of the day so far,
00:09:501 minute 38.9 seconds,
00:09:53and that is something like 3 seconds slower than the lap record,
00:09:58as he shapes up to complete another lap.
00:10:01Across the line he goes,
00:10:03and the battle behind him rages
00:10:04as you look at the unique monster scoreboard,
00:10:07and now Lafitte is going up
00:10:09to take that third position away from Pironi.
00:10:13The gap is 4.9 seconds
00:10:16between Pironi,
00:10:18sorry, between across the leader
00:10:20and Arnoux in second place.
00:10:24Reutemann there,
00:10:26Arnoux is in second position,
00:10:29across the head of it,
00:10:30Lafitte ahead of Pironi.
00:10:33Well, that was fantastic,
00:10:35the beat getting past Pironi,
00:10:37he's now going to be a very happy man
00:10:39to have that between him and Reutemann
00:10:40and the rest of the pack.
00:10:41Bielner is using his power well,
00:10:44moving slowly up,
00:10:46but the beat is really charging.
00:10:49We, in fact, have a potential joker in the pack today
00:10:51because the weather is looking extremely iffy.
00:10:55We had quite a little spot of rain
00:10:59about 20 minutes before the start.
00:11:01It tried to rain,
00:11:01it's close,
00:11:02and it looks as if it could go,
00:11:03although the power key
00:11:04has shifted a bit for the moment.
00:11:06And, of course,
00:11:07that could throw a lot of confusion,
00:11:08particularly to the Williams key.
00:11:11Whoops,
00:11:11and one of the Ferraris
00:11:12is blown up by the look of it.
00:11:13That looks Bielner,
00:11:14Bielner,
00:11:15Bielner,
00:11:15that's turbocharger gone,
00:11:16very spectacular.
00:11:17These turbo cars
00:11:17certainly blow up nicely
00:11:18when they do.
00:11:20There's a little fire
00:11:21in the turbocharger,
00:11:22and it's all doing to be well.
00:11:24Do you think it's impressive
00:11:24or are you going to pass it?
00:11:26Well, Bielner have had
00:11:27exactly the same thing
00:11:28happen to him in practice,
00:11:30and he just toured in
00:11:31to complete the lap,
00:11:32and I was talking to engineer Tomeini,
00:11:34one of the Ferrari headmen today,
00:11:36and they use an enormous number
00:11:38of turbochargers.
00:11:40Kroft has gone through
00:11:41to complete his sixth lap,
00:11:43and he is now well ahead
00:11:45of René Arnoux in second place.
00:11:46John Blasicius is third,
00:11:48there only is still four,
00:11:49but Reutemann right behind him
00:11:51in fifth place.
00:11:52In sixth position now
00:11:53is Bruno Giacomelli,
00:11:55who has gone ahead
00:11:56of Reutemann,
00:11:59and there goes the leader.
00:12:01The gap is down
00:12:03between Alain Prost,
00:12:06the leader,
00:12:06and René Arnoux in second place,
00:12:08as we see Gilles Villeneuve
00:12:10in the stricken Ferrari,
00:12:12in its race run,
00:12:13because you certainly
00:12:14can't change a turbo
00:12:16like you can change
00:12:17tires and wheels,
00:12:18and to confirm that,
00:12:20Gilles Villeneuve
00:12:21gets out of the race,
00:12:22and that is on the lap,
00:12:24the end of his sixth lap.
00:12:26So, one Ferrari out,
00:12:29and there's one still going
00:12:30very strongly indeed,
00:12:32but in fourth position now,
00:12:34Pironi,
00:12:34the Frenchman,
00:12:36who joined Ferrari this year.
00:12:38You're looking at the turbo charge
00:12:39section of the engine,
00:12:41the turbos are on top
00:12:42of this V6,
00:12:44something like 560 horsepower engine.
00:12:47Yes, I imagine, Murray,
00:12:48that the Ferrari team
00:12:49will have taken
00:12:50a bit of a gamble
00:12:51and turned their turbocharger
00:12:52up to really risky boost levels
00:12:55to get more power,
00:12:56because, quite honestly,
00:12:57they are the first people
00:12:59to be aware of the fact
00:12:59that their chassis
00:13:00isn't very good,
00:13:01and so they've got to do it
00:13:02as best they can
00:13:03with the engine.
00:13:03So I'm sure they've taken a risk,
00:13:05run as much power as they dare,
00:13:06just hope that the engine
00:13:07hung on.
00:13:08So far,
00:13:08they've got one wrong
00:13:10and one right.
00:13:11This is a long way yet to go
00:13:12for Pironi to hang on
00:13:13if he's running
00:13:13a lot of boost pressure.
00:13:15And you will have seen
00:13:17that Carlos Reutemann
00:13:19has moved up a place again,
00:13:21and the gap now
00:13:23between the leader
00:13:25and Alain Cross,
00:13:28and we are on the last eight
00:13:30out of 52,
00:13:31and René Ardu
00:13:32is the second turbo charge.
00:13:35Renault is still about
00:13:36three and a half seconds.
00:13:38There is Cross,
00:13:39round the Grand Curve,
00:13:42and from the Grand Curve
00:13:44he goes up to the Roger,
00:13:46the new left-handed chicane,
00:13:49which is specially made
00:13:50to reduce the space of it.
00:13:52Out of the right-hander,
00:13:53up to the first right-hander
00:13:54at the Lesbo-Benz,
00:13:56those two of them,
00:13:57fourth gear,
00:13:58and it's something like
00:13:58140 miles an hour
00:14:01as Alain Cross
00:14:03very much in the groove
00:14:04in the latter end
00:14:06of the 1981 World Championship Series,
00:14:09he's in fifth place
00:14:10in the World Championship,
00:14:12is Cross,
00:14:13with 29 points.
00:14:14He comes out of the dip,
00:14:17underneath the banked part
00:14:18of the Monza circuit,
00:14:19which isn't used anymore,
00:14:21down to the Nihaloni,
00:14:22the left-hander,
00:14:23Ascari,
00:14:23the right drag down to the Parabolica
00:14:25at 160 miles an hour,
00:14:28and as you see,
00:14:29Alain Cross is leading
00:14:30René Arnoux by just over five seconds.
00:14:33Jacques Lapite is only
00:14:34two and a half seconds
00:14:35behind Arnoux and gaining.
00:14:37Pironi is in fourth place,
00:14:39just a second behind Lapite.
00:14:41Then Reutemann,
00:14:42who's moved up
00:14:43since that chart was done,
00:14:44and Giacomelli
00:14:45is the Alfa Romeo
00:14:46in sixth place,
00:14:47and we are on lap eight,
00:14:50almost at the end of it.
00:14:51By the way,
00:14:52Nigel Sancho
00:14:53is in twelfth position
00:14:54and John Watson
00:14:55is ninth
00:14:56as
00:14:57René Arnoux
00:14:59goes through.
00:15:01Now,
00:15:01look back
00:15:02and you'll see
00:15:02Reutemann is ahead
00:15:03of Lapite
00:15:04and ahead of Pironi.
00:15:05Reutemann is third,
00:15:06is it?
00:15:07Lapite is fourth,
00:15:09Pironi is fifth.
00:15:12Up to the Recipitio,
00:15:14Carlos Reutemann first.
00:15:17There is Alan Jones.
00:15:19Alan Jones moving up
00:15:20through the field.
00:15:26And if you can't hear cars
00:15:28as they're going past
00:15:29the ground,
00:15:30I do apologise
00:15:31there is nothing
00:15:32we can do about it.
00:15:33Such is the noise here
00:15:34we can hardly hear ourselves.
00:15:35But there is Reutemann third,
00:15:37Lapite in fourth position,
00:15:40Pironi in fifth place now,
00:15:41Alan Jones is sixth,
00:15:43and that looks like
00:15:44Nelson Tiquet
00:15:45in the background.
00:15:46It is in seventh position.
00:15:48So things are really
00:15:50getting exciting
00:15:51as Lapite goes through.
00:15:52There is Pironi
00:15:53dropping back
00:15:54and Jones is closing up
00:15:55on the Fritzman
00:15:56in the Ferrari.
00:16:01Let's go to the
00:16:17family in fourth position.
00:16:18Here we are behind it.
00:16:19And here we are behind it.
00:16:19Okay.
00:16:20Let's go.
00:16:20There is another one
00:16:22in fifth place.
00:16:23I know that it is
00:16:24also in theoof
00:16:25and in fifth place.
00:16:27And as we look at Didier Pironi on lap 11, there is Nelson Piquet, and the order at the
00:16:46moment is Alain Cross is leading in the Renault from Rennie Arnoux.
00:16:52In third position is Carlos Reutemann with Alain Jones fourth. Nelson Piquet is in fifth
00:16:58position. In sixth place behind Nelson Piquet is Didier Pironi, who's dropped back from third
00:17:04position in the Ferrari. Then behind Pironi is Bruno Giacomelli, and following Bruno Giacomelli
00:17:12there is John Watson. And Derek Daly is in tenth position. Down to fifteenth place goes Nigel
00:17:20Mansell. And Brian Henton is still running. He's in 22nd position in the Tolman. As we
00:17:26look at, Henton crosses the line as we look at the two Renaults. And Rennie Arnoux seems
00:17:34visually on lap 11 to be closing up on his teammate Prost. There in third and fourth positions,
00:17:42Reutemann and Jones. Fifth is number five, Nelson Piquet. Sixth in the Ferrari, Didier Pironi.
00:17:48Seventh in the Alfa Romeo, Bruno Giacomelli. John Watson is eighth. Daly is ninth. The feet is dropping
00:17:54back in tenth place. Number eleven, that is to say, Elio De Angelis is in eleventh place, and Patrick
00:18:00Tolme is in twelfth position. On lap 12, the two turbocharged Renaults of Prost in the lead, and Arnoux
00:18:12in second place, are leading the two Sadia Leila Williams cars. And there they are, in third position,
00:18:28number two, Carlos Reutemann. Four point, and that is Slim Borghud's ATS. And it has gone off the
00:18:35course, and so has number 26, and that is Jacques Lafitte. Jacques Lafitte then, and that transforms
00:18:48the world championship. Look at the rear tower on Jacques Lafitte's car, and that was obviously
00:18:52why he slowed down. It's well, you see the blisters. What happens when the rubber is too soft is that
00:18:58it overheats, and it actually bubbles up, and blisters like that, and you get less and less grip. And I would
00:19:03think that that was certainly a contributory factor to Lafitte's exit from the circuit in that
00:19:09summery fashion. That sand stuff is absolutely marvellous. It really stops the cars very quickly
00:19:14indeed. And, oh, it's raining. It's raining out on the back of the circuit. It's very wet
00:19:19indeed. So we've got rain down the far end. We're very close to the parabolica there. It's not
00:19:24raining here yet, but it looks like it's really wet the circuit. Now that may well be why those
00:19:28cars are off. But that fan stuff, Remake, you've stopped the cars extremely quickly and
00:19:33it's marvellous. I think they really should incorporate it into as many circuits as possible,
00:19:37because it's very effective indeed. It might be difficult to get your car out of it once it's
00:19:43in. Alan Jones has moved up. He's past Reuterman. Jones may be in pain. He's pretty grisly when
00:19:50he's not in pain. And I think James' pain is quite a challenging thing. Anyway, he's certainly
00:19:57driving a very hard race. He's really charging now. Well, you've heard the news. Rain on the
00:20:04far side of the circuit. And the far side of the circuit is only about 200 yards away from the near
00:20:10side of the circuit. Wet as they go through the chicane at Nihaloni and Ascari. And Alan Jones
00:20:17up into third place ahead of Reuterman and starting a terrific charge on the two Brenos. There is
00:20:24Jones, the world champion, leading the 1981 world championship leader Reuterman. And they
00:20:30have lapsed Brian Hinton in then. Nelson Piquet still in fifth place and Didier Pironi. And Nigel
00:20:38Mantle is slowing down. He's now in 16th place. I'm looking. We're sitting opposite the start-finish
00:20:44line. There doesn't seem to be any activity towards stopping the race. But of course, if the track
00:20:48gets wet right the way around, then they will stop the race and restart it. We're going to the
00:20:52complicated rule system. The Tolman just went by there. There's the water coming off the Renault's
00:20:56tower. The Tolman was pumping a few flames out of its turbocharger. Alan Jones just coming
00:21:03down to the wet bit of the circuit. See the water coming off the towers now. They're going
00:21:06to have to tiptoe through there. But as I said before, we're very close to that area and the
00:21:12rain hasn't reached us here yet. So I think that might have been a freak corner of a cloud
00:21:16that just caught that extreme end of the circuit because the rest of it looks bone dry.
00:21:22I think that's the Tolman's putting the flames. Still, they don't appear to be planning to stop the race at the moment.
00:21:29So that was Derek Daly spinning off. Derek Daly, you can see how wet it is. And Derek Daly spun off.
00:21:37He's just out of camera range. Maybe they'll pick him up at another one. But this is making things extremely hazardous.
00:21:44It's extremely hazardous, the gap between the race leader, Alain Croft, and that's one of the Renaults off. I can't identify, it's Arnoux. I can tell from the dark overalls as the driver walks away that Rennie Arnoux and the other car, I just can't identify.
00:22:02It looked like the Theodore, but it can't be because Mark Fuhrer is not in the race, he failed to qualify, but I know it will almost certainly be one of the Tyrells, but Rennie Arnoux, subject to positive identification, out of the race, and it's Alboreto's car.
00:22:21We're almost certain that it's Alboreto's car, the white one that is stationary on the circuit, with the Marshals pushing it off, and now Alan Jones has got his chance.
00:22:32Viewers in Australia, pay attention, and off goes another one, but, and that was the, another Tyrell, I think that was Eddie Cheever's car, and you can see how dangerous the corner is,
00:22:43because as they come out of the Lesmo curve, it's Prost that's off. It is Alain Croft. No, Prost has just gone past me. Apologise.
00:22:55It's definitely Rennie Arnoux, and the cars as they go past, and out goes Salazar, the Chilean driver, and I suspect that the organisers will now be thinking very seriously about possibly stopping the race,
00:23:11because Prost out of it, Arnoux out of it, for good, off the feet, out, Bielder, out, and there is Brian Henton.
00:23:19This is the first time we have ever seen a Coleman in a draw three, a Formula One draw three, but Brian Henton going very slowly indeed,
00:23:29and as Alboreto jumps out of his car, number three, he's been hoping, I think, that the Marshals will be able to get him started again.
00:23:38It's Eddie Cheever's car. Eddie Cheever then is out, not Alboreto. I apologise for the wrong identification,
00:23:49but Eddie Cheever there, out of the peril, and on the right with the crane lifting it out of danger,
00:23:56the Renault of Alain Prost, so on lap 16, Arnoux, so on lap 15, it is Alain Prost in the lead from Alan Jones.
00:24:08In third position, it is Carlos Reutemann. In fourth place, it is Nelson Piquet.
00:24:13In fifth position, behind Nelson Piquet, it's Bruno Giacomelli, and then behind Giacomelli in the Ferrari, Didier Pironi,
00:24:22and then behind him, it is Patrick Torbay in the second of the two Torbacars, and in ninth position, it is Andrea De Cesaris.
00:24:33And behind them is John Watson, and Alan Jones has been pushed right down into eighth position.
00:25:00Well, what a battle behind, because although Alain Prost is very much commanding the race from the front,
00:25:10his team mate, René Arnoux, is out of it. Alan Jones is at the moment in a pretty secure second place on lap 17 out of 52.
00:25:21Bruno Giacomelli in a third superb place in the Alfa Romeo,
00:25:24and we remember well how Bruno Giacomelli led the American Grand Prix at Watkins Glen last year, 1980,
00:25:33until he had some kind of engine trouble and had to drop out, and that was a stirring drive,
00:25:38and now he's right back again, up at the top in third position,
00:25:42as Jacques Lafitte tries to take Didier Pironi in Tombe. Tombe, I'm sorry.
00:25:47Tombe coming up and taking Pironi and pulling away from him. Tombe in the Torbacars Matra V12 across the line again,
00:26:0017 laps completed by Alain Prost in the Renault in the lead,
00:26:05and it looks to me as though no rain is actually coming down at the moment, although it's very, very dark overhead.
00:26:14Alain Jones goes through in second position, and now the battle for third.
00:26:20The gap between Bruno Giacomelli and Jones is 5.9 seconds.
00:26:26It's TK's fourth. Tombe up into fifth position, ahead of Pironi, who is sixth, Alain Jones, and John Watson is seventh,
00:26:37and Alain Jones is in eighth position.
00:26:40Well, this rain has shown the sort of characteristic amongst the drivers.
00:26:43You can pick out the young Tigers, less experienced.
00:26:46It is, it's very difficult. When the track's wet like this, if you're on dry tyres,
00:26:49there are two ways to take the corner.
00:26:53One is to try and take it at what one might call a racing speed,
00:26:56which is considerably faster than the absolute 100% race speed.
00:27:00And that's why, for example, Bruno Giacomelli, who is doing it very well indeed at the moment, I might add,
00:27:06but he is probably taking it close to the limit.
00:27:09And as I said before, you know, it's a long race, one is on set, and you're out of the race,
00:27:13which is, of course, the experienced drivers.
00:27:16Reutemann, for example, is right at the other extreme.
00:27:18He's taking a real tiptoe, which is very much Reutemann's character,
00:27:21but that has cost him dear, because it's put him down into eighth place.
00:27:24And it may just be that he won't be able to recover that before the end of the race
00:27:28if we get no more rain and no more dramas.
00:27:31And Reutemann's certainly in need of points for the championship at the moment.
00:27:34Piquet, meanwhile, has moved up, and that's an overall shot.
00:27:38You can see it's misty, it's made overcast.
00:27:41There they are, slipping and sliding.
00:27:44And Giacomelli coming down to the parabolica.
00:27:46That's a back marker he's just in front of there, he's just that.
00:27:48Here comes the big bunch.
00:27:50Piquet's now got the better of that bunch.
00:27:52Alan Jones, you see, who's clear at the moment in second place, ahead of Giacomelli,
00:27:56but Giacomelli must now be catching him.
00:27:58In fact, Giacomelli's now in sight, which he wasn't a little while ago.
00:28:02Well, the gap between Jones and Giacomelli, 6.8 seconds.
00:28:12Lapite going for fourth position, Andy Gassman.
00:28:16That's Lapite now fourth, ahead of Piquet, fifth, Pironi, sixth.
00:28:20John Watson has closed right up in seventh position, number seven,
00:28:24as we look at Bruno Giacomelli in the Alfa Romeo, on his own,
00:28:28but definitely taking a bit out of Alan Jones' position.
00:28:33And good news for British enthusiasts is that Brian Henton is still in the race.
00:28:38In fact, he's in 16th place.
00:28:40And Nigel Mansell is in 14th place.
00:28:42Derek Daly, one ahead of him in 13th position.
00:28:45As we look at Michele Alboreto, who is about to be lapsed by Patrick Tombe,
00:28:52and Patrick Tombe, of course, are now ahead of Piquet.
00:28:56And this has to be, at the moment, the sensation of the race.
00:29:00Because Tombe, who is in fourth position, is pulling away from Piquet and Pironi and Watson.
00:29:08Yes, but that's another example of the young tiger approach.
00:29:12And Tambe, as well, has taken great advantage of the wet by probably taking the small risk.
00:29:19But, like Giacomelli, it hasn't cost him anything.
00:29:22He's done it extremely well, and he's moved up to four or five places as a result of it.
00:29:27He's now in fifth place, certainly the best control free situation he's had for some time.
00:29:32They're all arriving together.
00:29:33Pironi is fighting away, slipping and sliding.
00:29:36Look at them, sliding all over the place here.
00:29:38And Watson, sitting quiet at the back of that group, in the group there, but not making much of sense.
00:29:47Well, let's just check on the race position on lap 20,
00:29:51as we watch Didier Pironi and Nelson Piquet battling for a position as they go into the Rettipiccio Piquet,
00:30:00ahead of John Watson and Michele Alvareto, who has been last.
00:30:04On lap 20, it's Alain Frost leading Alan Jones, with Bruno Giacomelli in third position.
00:30:11Then that battle for fourth place, which was Patrick Tombe, and then behind him, Nelson Piquet and Didier Pironi.
00:30:22And there is Patrick Tombe in fourth position, easing out now, ahead of fifth-base man, Didier Pironi.
00:30:30There he is in the Ferrari.
00:30:31Sixth is Piquet.
00:30:32Seventh is John Watson, and out of the points at the moment is Carlos Reutemann.
00:30:39There he is, storming along at the back, behind John Watson, who loses it.
00:30:43That's John Watson, and a very nasty one indeed, torn the whole of the back off the car.
00:30:51And that's a very, very bad one indeed.
00:30:54They will dash forward and get rid of the wreckage, and there's somebody else off there as well.
00:31:00It looks like...
00:31:02Let's watch this replay.
00:31:04As John Watson loses it, it goes backwards into the arm cone.
00:31:08That's a very heavy shunt there.
00:31:09Watson just caught the kerb there, and he backed it in absolutely square on.
00:31:13And that's as better flame as all the fuel lines.
00:31:16Watson's perfectly all right.
00:31:17He's got out of the car, he's walked away.
00:31:19That was just a flat fuel as the fuel lines broke.
00:31:21And it was, in fact, the back end of the car came off, and Reutemann, following there,
00:31:27just avoided it to verify...
00:31:29I don't know whether Reutemann damaged his car on the barrier or not,
00:31:33but he did seem to keep going.
00:31:35And Watson there is in half a car.
00:31:37That's the gearbox unit you see on the left.
00:31:40And as they say, they come out of that corner at about 150 miles an hour,
00:31:44and he hardly slows down at all.
00:31:47Very nasty comes to John Watson.
00:31:49That was a great save, because that looked like a little bit of an error of concentration.
00:31:52He just let the car ride up the kerb a bit, and then failed to control it.
00:31:56Well, the marshals are getting pretty excited.
00:31:58It's a pretty dangerous situation, because as you come round that corner,
00:32:02it's completely blind, and the drivers who are coming round that don't yet know,
00:32:05until they've done a lap, what it's like.
00:32:08And Reutemann apparently got through that all right.
00:32:12Albaretto caught the back end of it.
00:32:14He was the second car to arrive on the scene,
00:32:16and has damaged his car, taking invasive action,
00:32:18which is, of course, very bad luck for him.
00:32:20Well, the marshals dragging away the rear end,
00:32:24the gearbox, the transaxle, and the wheels of John Watson's Marlborough MP4.
00:32:31And as far as we know, John Watson got out of that safely.
00:32:34You can see that there's no driver in the front half of the car,
00:32:37and we saw him get out, so he's presumably OK.
00:32:41And a very, very lucky man, because you're going very, very quickly
00:32:44when you come out of the corner there.
00:32:47It's about a 160-mile-an-hour corner,
00:32:50and there is Alain Prost completing lap 22 in the lead,
00:32:55going into the retificho,
00:32:57and that'll give us a chance to get the thread of the places back
00:33:00as we wait now, looking down towards the parabolica.
00:33:04Alan Jones goes through second position,
00:33:07and in third position it is Giacomelli,
00:33:10but look at Patrick Tombe in the blue Talbot,
00:33:14who is challenging Giacomelli.
00:33:16This is the excitement of the race
00:33:17as they close up on Jean-Pierre Jarrier
00:33:20in the brand-new Ocella.
00:33:22There is Didier Pironi ahead again of Nelson Piquet,
00:33:28and that should mean that Carlos Reutemann
00:33:31is back in the points again.
00:33:32Yes, Reutemann goes through,
00:33:34but he's got right on his tail
00:33:36Andrea de Cesaris, a replay, this is,
00:33:39of the John Watson incident.
00:33:41See, he loses the back of the car,
00:33:43it sprints right around,
00:33:45goes across the track,
00:33:47backwards into the arm toe,
00:33:49then a great flash of flame
00:33:51as the fuel lines erupt.
00:33:54The car continues spinning,
00:33:55the whole of the back end of it torn off,
00:33:57another flash of flame,
00:33:59and the back end of the car goes right across the circuit
00:34:02as the bodywork flies up into the air,
00:34:05and you see to the left,
00:34:07Michele Alboreto avoiding the damage,
00:34:10but going very, very quickly indeed,
00:34:12and the back of his car hits the arm toe,
00:34:14ruptures the fuel lines,
00:34:15a great flash of lights.
00:34:17There is the suspension and the gearbox,
00:34:20and that is Reutemann going through now
00:34:22as Michele Alboreto spins off
00:34:26and as cross finishes lap 22
00:34:30in this amazing Italian Grand Prix,
00:34:34he is leading now Alan Jones
00:34:37and in third position,
00:34:38up into third position,
00:34:40still Bruno Giacomelli
00:34:42as we look at Alan Jones
00:34:43going through in second position
00:34:45on his way to 9 points,
00:34:486 points in the World Championship.
00:34:50Now, Ben Giacomelli
00:34:52is still in third position,
00:34:55but driving the best race of his career
00:34:57since he's joined Talbot.
00:34:59Behind Giacomelli,
00:35:00there is Patrick Tombe in fourth place,
00:35:02that is Jarrier who has been lapped.
00:35:05Their fifth is Elton Piquet,
00:35:07and sixth for Didier Pironi.
00:35:16He's gone extraordinary.
00:35:17He's scored right away from Talbot.
00:35:19Oh, no, that's, I beg your pardon,
00:35:20that's Mario Andretti
00:35:21in the other Alfa
00:35:22who's also coming up through the field
00:35:24very well indeed.
00:35:25He's moved up past Reutemann.
00:35:27I'm getting confused.
00:35:28I can't identify the helmet there.
00:35:30The captain says one thing.
00:35:32Well, it's Mario Andretti,
00:35:33but let us on lap 24
00:35:35with a very sick Tolman passing us
00:35:38with Brian Henton at the wheel.
00:35:40Give you the positions.
00:35:41On lap 24 in this 52-lamp race,
00:35:44Alain Prost has just completed the lap
00:35:47very much in the lead.
00:35:49In second position is Alan Jones.
00:35:52I've just had a flash that Patrick Tombe
00:35:53is out of the race,
00:35:55but in third position now is Nelson Piquet.
00:35:58In fourth position is Didier Pironi.
00:36:01In fifth place is Mario Andretti.
00:36:04And in sixth position is Carlos Reutemann
00:36:06back in the point.
00:36:08There is Giacomelli in third position.
00:36:12Patrick Tombe, cruel luck for him.
00:36:14He was battling for third position
00:36:15with Giacomelli.
00:36:18And now it's Piquet who is up behind Giacomelli
00:36:22with Pironi behind him.
00:36:23There is the battle for fourth position.
00:36:27Nelson Piquet fourth.
00:36:28Didier Pironi, number 28 in the Scarlet Ferrari,
00:36:31in fifth position.
00:36:33Behind us in the point now
00:36:35is Carlos Reutemann in sixth place.
00:36:38In seventh position is Andrea de Cesaris.
00:36:41And then, Elio de Angelis,
00:36:43you know that Nigel Mantle is out of the race
00:36:46and we're looking at Alain Prost,
00:36:48the race leader on lap 25,
00:36:51coming up to half distance,
00:36:52which is lap 26.
00:36:55But look at the car in front.
00:36:57It's the Tolman of Hinton.
00:36:59The turbocharged one and a half litre,
00:37:02Brian Hart engined Tolman,
00:37:05and it's about to be lapped by race leader
00:37:08Alain Prost, number 15,
00:37:10who is seemingly on his way
00:37:12to his third Grand Prix victory of 1981
00:37:16with again his team-mate René Arnoux out.
00:37:20Because as we look at Brian Hinton
00:37:21completing the lap,
00:37:24and now Prost coming up to take him,
00:37:26we go back down the field
00:37:28to take a look as Jarrier goes through.
00:37:32But Alain Prost is the man who won in France,
00:37:36who won in Holland,
00:37:36who has failed to finish eight times.
00:37:41Alain Prost is still in second position.
00:37:45And we're looking now at the exit from the Parabolica
00:37:48as the third position man.
00:37:50Giacomelli goes into the reticiccio.
00:37:53This is the battle for fourth position.
00:37:56Rather, that was the battle for fourth position
00:37:58between Nelson Tique and Didier Pironi
00:38:01as we look at Giacomelli's Alfa Romeo exiting
00:38:05and going up towards the Lesmo bend.
00:38:09There's the first Lesmo bend.
00:38:13Now he's at the Rocha.
00:38:18And Alan Jones, we see for the first time
00:38:20for a long time,
00:38:22Jones is now some 17 seconds behind Alain Prost
00:38:27and some five seconds ahead of Bruno Giacomelli.
00:38:31So the race positions are pretty static at the moment,
00:38:35but as we have had in the past,
00:38:38there have been a lot of drivers dropping out.
00:38:41Hector Rebac went out very early on.
00:38:44Villeneuve went out of the race, of course,
00:38:46with that broken turbo.
00:38:48Jacques Lafitte with a puncture.
00:38:49Then Slim Borgud went out.
00:38:51Rennie Arnoux went off into the sand.
00:38:54Elisio Salazar spun off.
00:38:56John Watson, we've seen, destroy his car.
00:38:59Michele Alboreto went out at the same time as Watson.
00:39:02Riccardo Patrese, we have seen in the pit.
00:39:05And we've seen, too,
00:39:06Nigel Mansell's car being pushed in.
00:39:11And, of course, Patrick Tombe out of the race
00:39:14because he's shown on our caption board here,
00:39:17three laps of drift.
00:39:19So he's right well down.
00:39:2113th position officially at the moment.
00:39:24Giacomelli, number 23.
00:39:28And behind him is Mario Andretti
00:39:32in the second of the two, Alfa Romeo.
00:39:35So we'll have to keep a very careful eye open
00:39:37as they go through at the end of this lap.
00:39:39There is Piquet going through.
00:39:41And Piquet is...
00:39:43And into the pitch comes Giacomelli.
00:39:48Well, the man who was in third place.
00:39:51I've said this before this season,
00:39:55but we're beginning to look as though we're going to have
00:39:58very few cars finish the Italian Grand Prix
00:40:00because Giacomelli is effectively out of the running.
00:40:04That puts Carlos Reutemann up another place.
00:40:06And the positions on lap 27, which is the one that we're on now,
00:40:11confirm that Alain Prost is leading from Alan Jones,
00:40:15with Nelson Piquet in third position.
00:40:19Up into third position has gone Nelson Piquet.
00:40:22Up into fourth position, with only 12 cars left,
00:40:25has gone Didier Pironi.
00:40:27Up into fifth place has gone Mario Andretti
00:40:30in the second, Alfa Romeo.
00:40:32And down into sixth position,
00:40:35and now much lower, of course, Bruno Giacomelli.
00:40:37And that means that the new sixth-placed man
00:40:40will be Carlos Reutemann.
00:40:44It's a great shame to see Giacomelli go out
00:40:46because he really has driven an excellent race.
00:40:49He didn't put a foot wrong.
00:40:50Now, Giacomelli is back.
00:40:51He's just rejoined.
00:40:52He's just gone out of the pits.
00:40:53I didn't see what they did to the car,
00:40:56so we don't really know what the trouble was.
00:40:58But his race is sore.
00:41:00The third purpose is lost because he's now a lap down.
00:41:04And a great shame because his driving has been characterised
00:41:07by being a triple headstrong in the past.
00:41:10And in the most difficult conditions,
00:41:12with that wet patch there on the one corner,
00:41:14he took advantage of it and he didn't make a mistake.
00:41:16And it was a really, really fine effort.
00:41:19And it would have been nice, of course,
00:41:20to have seen him go the distance in his home Grand Prix
00:41:22in a healthy state,
00:41:24see if he could really put a good result across.
00:41:25The car's obviously going very well indeed
00:41:27because Mario Andretti is coming quietly through the field.
00:41:31And another good race is being driven so far
00:41:33by Andrea de Cesaric,
00:41:35who's taken up the cudgels from John Watson
00:41:38and is closing steadily in on Carlos Reutemann.
00:41:41In fact, he's now very close behind him.
00:41:42Well, these defections, as it were,
00:41:48there's Jones going through.
00:41:51These defections, as it were,
00:41:53have affected the World Championship.
00:41:55Carlos Reutemann and Piquet,
00:41:57it's absolutely critical where they finish in this race.
00:42:01And with Piquet well ahead of Carlos Reutemann
00:42:04at the present moment,
00:42:05if they keep going the way they are now,
00:42:07it means to say that Nelson Piquet
00:42:09will take the World Championship lead of the Italians
00:42:11at the end of the Italian Grand Prix.
00:42:13He's in the running for four points at the present moment,
00:42:16whereas Carlos Reutemann, who's in sixth position,
00:42:19is in the running for only one point.
00:42:22That's 29 now,
00:42:24because Alain Frost has just completed 28 laps.
00:42:28Second position, still Alan Jones.
00:42:30That's Brian Henson's turbocharged Tolman.
00:42:33Third position is still Piquet.
00:42:35Fourth position is still Piquet.
00:42:38Fifth is Mario Andretti.
00:42:41And sixth is Carlos Reutemann.
00:42:43Well...
00:42:44And Reutemann in the World Championship point.
00:42:55Behind Carlos Reutemann,
00:42:57Andrea De Piteris is in seventh position.
00:43:01And he's retrieving his honour,
00:43:04because once again in practice,
00:43:06he went off and badly damaged his Marlborough,
00:43:09as he has done many times before this season.
00:43:12But he's keeping going extremely steadily and well at the moment,
00:43:16albeit a full minute behind Alain Frost,
00:43:20the race leader,
00:43:21who leaves Jones by 18 seconds.
00:43:23And the gap between Piquet in third position,
00:43:28Pironi in fourth, as you see,
00:43:30is 1.523 seconds.
00:43:32Piquet laps Brian Henson.
00:43:35And he's really pulling away from Didier Pironi now.
00:43:39The race leader, Alain Frost,
00:43:40is on his 31st lap.
00:43:43And it looks to me as...
00:43:44They go down towards the Parabolica,
00:43:51as though the conditions are brightening.
00:43:53There's been a very distinct brightening of the sky
00:43:55over our grandstand position here.
00:43:59And Piquet holding that third place,
00:44:02easing away from Pironi,
00:44:04who has yet to pass Brian Henson in the Tolman,
00:44:07as Alain Frost goes into the Villaloni,
00:44:11the left-hander...
00:44:13No, the Roger, I'm sorry, the...
00:44:16And it's Bruno Giacomelli back in the pin.
00:44:24Well, it's obviously,
00:44:26whatever the problem with the Alfa Romeo is,
00:44:28this is the new one,
00:44:29it's first race.
00:44:30Whatever the problem is,
00:44:32it certainly isn't cars,
00:44:34because there is no activity around the wheels at all.
00:44:36The mechanic at the back has got the air starter
00:44:39plugged in to the Alfa Romeo.
00:44:43He fires it up,
00:44:44and away goes Bruno Giacomelli,
00:44:46and towards us,
00:44:48out of the Ascari chicane,
00:44:50down towards the Parabolica,
00:44:52approaching 160 miles an hour in fifth gear,
00:44:55the race leader, Alain Frost,
00:44:58and Giacomelli leaves the pit,
00:45:00and it is definitely brightening.
00:45:02Now, we can expect the course to start drying out
00:45:05where it's wet.
00:45:06That's Alain Jones in second position
00:45:08on his 31st lap.
00:45:11Six points for Alain Jones,
00:45:13if he finishes here.
00:45:15That will give him 37 points,
00:45:17and we'll move him ahead of Jacques Lapite,
00:45:20who is out of the race,
00:45:22and up into third position.
00:45:24In which case,
00:45:25we would have Piquet leading the championship,
00:45:27Reutemann second,
00:45:28Jones third,
00:45:29and it really does look as though
00:45:31the world championship is going to go right now
00:45:33after the last race of the season
00:45:35at Las Vegas in California,
00:45:38before it's decided.
00:45:39Piquet,
00:45:39Pironi in fourth position,
00:45:42fighting back.
00:45:51Out of the Parabolica,
00:45:53we just saw Piquet.
00:45:54Here is Pironi down to the Reti Ficcio.
00:46:00They are now on their 32nd lap,
00:46:03so there are 20 laps to go.
00:46:05Hengist Tolman is still going pretty quick,
00:46:12but it sounds absolutely terrible,
00:46:15because as he backs off
00:46:17the slowdown
00:46:18for the multiple bends
00:46:20at the Reti Ficcio chicane,
00:46:23there is an enormous amount
00:46:24of spluttering and backfiring,
00:46:26but the important thing is
00:46:29that they are getting some race mileage
00:46:31on the Tolman.
00:46:32Giaconelli back in the race.
00:46:34Behind him,
00:46:35the race leader,
00:46:36number 15,
00:46:36Alain Prost,
00:46:37lap 32.
00:46:40Prost leading Jones
00:46:41by 18.7 seconds,
00:46:44and Jones is 22 seconds ahead of Piquet,
00:46:47who is 2 seconds ahead of Pironi,
00:46:50who is 7 seconds ahead of Andretti,
00:46:53who is 3 seconds ahead of Reutemann.
00:47:04to shoot the turbocharged cars so well.
00:47:06So it does look,
00:47:08although Prost is making his charge,
00:47:10it's a little bit too late,
00:47:11and we can't really see it as a contender,
00:47:14but the World Championship is,
00:47:16as Murray rightly says,
00:47:17opening up wider and wider at the moment,
00:47:18and it looks very much
00:47:21that we're going to go right down
00:47:22to the last race,
00:47:24which of course is absolutely ideal
00:47:25for us spectators,
00:47:26and pretty good for the drivers too,
00:47:28keeps them on their toes.
00:47:31Well now,
00:47:32look at this,
00:47:33because Carlos Reutemann
00:47:35has now got Mario Andretti
00:47:37right behind him,
00:47:39the American in the Alfa Romeo,
00:47:42the Gerrard Ducarouge,
00:47:43much modified Alfa Romeo.
00:47:45I keep on talking about this man,
00:47:47Ducarouge,
00:47:48who is he?
00:47:49The answer is that he is
00:47:50the ex-team manager
00:47:51of the Talbot team,
00:47:54who was fired
00:47:55and has taken his expertise
00:47:56to Alfa Romeo,
00:47:57who have been very eager indeed
00:48:00to make the maximum use of it,
00:48:02and he has made alterations
00:48:04to the monocoque of the Alfa Romeo,
00:48:07to the suspension,
00:48:08to the underwings in the side cars,
00:48:11but none to the engine.
00:48:12But the result is that,
00:48:14as you can well see,
00:48:15the Alfa Romeo handles
00:48:17very much better than it did,
00:48:19and now it's Alain Prost
00:48:21leading Alan Jones,
00:48:23who is second.
00:48:24Third place is Nelson Piquet,
00:48:27and in fourth position
00:48:29is Didier Pironi,
00:48:30but the battle for fifth
00:48:32and those vital world championship points
00:48:34is now starting to develop
00:48:35between number two,
00:48:36Carlos Reutemann,
00:48:37and number 22,
00:48:38Mario Andretti,
00:48:40with Elio De Angelis
00:48:41in seventh position,
00:48:43De Cesaris in eighth position,
00:48:44and there is Brian Henton,
00:48:46who is still in 12th place,
00:48:48albeit two laps behind the race leader,
00:48:52which is that man,
00:48:53number 15,
00:48:54Alain Prost,
00:48:55who is on his 35th lap out of 52.
00:48:57Prost out of the Lesmo,
00:49:02they haven't got the suspension
00:49:05and the wheel of Watson's car
00:49:07very far off the circuit,
00:49:08obviously because it is very heavy indeed.
00:49:13There's Prost,
00:49:13who's gone ahead of Giacomelli.
00:49:15Giacomelli, of course,
00:49:17is two laps to drift now,
00:49:20with his two visits to the pit.
00:49:22But Giacomelli in the background
00:49:24and the gap between Prost and Reutemann,
00:49:28who is in fifth position,
00:49:30is 58 seconds,
00:49:32as near as makes no difference.
00:49:34But I'm wondering how much longer
00:49:36Carlos Reutemann will be able
00:49:37to hold on to that fifth position
00:49:39because Mario Andretti
00:49:40has really got the bit between his teeth.
00:49:43Prost exiting the Parabolica
00:49:44to come through and complete
00:49:45his 35th lap.
00:49:48And he's got 16 laps to go now.
00:49:52On his way to
00:49:54his third Grand Prix victory of 1981,
00:49:59having won in France and Holland
00:50:00and second in Germany
00:50:02and third in the Argentine.
00:50:03And he should have,
00:50:04or rather he could have,
00:50:06won at least two other Grands Prix's.
00:50:08He led in Britain,
00:50:09he led in Austria.
00:50:12And he would richly deserve this victory
00:50:15because he is undoubtedly
00:50:17the driver of the year
00:50:18at the moment.
00:50:19Alain Prost, there he goes.
00:50:21Here towards us,
00:50:22Bruno Giacomelli,
00:50:2311th place,
00:50:24two laps down.
00:50:25And Prost is slowing.
00:50:28Surely, Prost slowed right down there.
00:50:31Yes, it certainly looked like it,
00:50:32but he seems to be going slow.
00:50:34He's very difficult, of course,
00:50:35to be for Mario Andretti.
00:50:36We can work it out.
00:50:38Now, Giacomelli didn't seem
00:50:39to be gaining on him
00:50:40very dramatically,
00:50:40so maybe it was just
00:50:41an obstacle illusion.
00:50:43But it caught both of us out.
00:50:44But let's keep looking at him.
00:50:48Now, I think if he had slowed down,
00:50:50Giacomelli would be catching him up by now,
00:50:52but he just doesn't seem to have changed.
00:50:55Dear, dear,
00:50:55that gave me a bit of a fright.
00:50:57The surface, by the way,
00:50:58Prost is driving.
00:50:59This year has become really mature.
00:51:01He's a very,
00:51:02he's a very class driver, Prost.
00:51:04He's relatively new to Grand Prix racing.
00:51:06This is his second full season.
00:51:07He joined the McLaren team last year
00:51:09when their fortunes were not
00:51:11at their highest level
00:51:13for a while,
00:51:14and he showed immediately
00:51:15that he had a very intelligent approach.
00:51:18He was fast in the car,
00:51:19and now he's got a particularly good car.
00:51:23It is significant
00:51:25that he didn't put a foot wrong
00:51:26when that rain came down.
00:51:28No sense of panic
00:51:30or anything like that.
00:51:31Driven in a very mature fashion.
00:51:34We're going to see a lot of Alan Prost
00:51:36through his career,
00:51:37I'm sure of that.
00:51:37Well, I certainly looked visually
00:51:41as though Alan Prost slowed down,
00:51:43and I've got the stopwatch running now
00:51:45to see what the gap is
00:51:46between Alan Prost and Alan Jones,
00:51:48and it is 16.8 seconds,
00:51:51so certainly Alan Prost
00:51:53hasn't lost any time
00:51:55and therefore distance to Alan Jones,
00:51:57and it must have been an illusion.
00:52:00Piquet there in third position.
00:52:02Very spread out now.
00:52:04Piquet is 30 seconds behind Jones,
00:52:06and Reutemann and Pironi at it now.
00:52:10Pironi was in fourth position,
00:52:11and Reutemann has caught it.
00:52:15And if Reutemann can get past...
00:52:18Sorry, Pironi's in fourth position here.
00:52:21Don't forget that Piquet is in third position.
00:52:24Here is the battle for fourth place,
00:52:28which has been going on for so long
00:52:30between Pironi's Ferrari
00:52:34and Reutemann's Williams
00:52:37into the recidivio.
00:52:46Reutemann's fifth position,
00:52:47two World Championship points.
00:52:49If he can get past Pironi,
00:52:51it will be fourth and three points.
00:52:53This is the most extraordinary thing.
00:52:55Reutemann, I can only surmise
00:52:56that Reutemann has speeded up,
00:52:58because all of a sudden he's dropped Andretti,
00:53:00and he's caught up with Pironi,
00:53:02and it's characteristic.
00:53:03It's strange to see that somebody
00:53:04who's leading the World Championship
00:53:06is so moody.
00:53:07There's no doubt that it's a pretty good character
00:53:10for Reutemann to have gone into a decline,
00:53:14even as one might almost say a stulch
00:53:16when the rain came down,
00:53:17because he didn't like it.
00:53:18And of all the drivers in the race,
00:53:20he certainly went the slowest
00:53:22through the wet patch,
00:53:23which is more, as I say,
00:53:25more circumspects than the game.
00:53:27It's more a sort of moodiness.
00:53:29He gets rather sulky about it.
00:53:30And I think he must have finally realised
00:53:32that it's dried out
00:53:32and got the bit back between his teeth again.
00:53:35But it is strange how he behaves like this.
00:53:40Well, watching the battle for fourth position then,
00:53:43between Reutemann,
00:53:45who's going to come out of Pironi's slipstream,
00:53:47I think, as they come down the parabolica
00:53:49and try and take that fourth position away
00:53:52from the Frenchman in the Italian Ferrari.
00:53:54But he won't get round the outside of Didier Pironi.
00:53:59Not there, or if he does,
00:54:00it's going to be absolutely superhuman driving.
00:54:03Meantime, Piquet is just about the length of the straight
00:54:07that Pironi and Reutemann have entered now,
00:54:10ahead of these two.
00:54:11So, Pironi goes through and completes his 37th lap
00:54:16in this 52 lap race,
00:54:18still in fourth position.
00:54:21Reutemann comes up to him again.
00:54:22It's obvious that the Williams that we well know
00:54:25handles much better than the Ferrari,
00:54:27and he closes right up
00:54:29as they go through the lefts and rights
00:54:31of the Rettificio,
00:54:33up now towards the Roggia
00:54:34as they go round the Curva Grande,
00:54:36that very famous fourth gear corner,
00:54:40and it's 160 miles an hour here,
00:54:42and now Reutemann's going to try and get through on braking,
00:54:44and he's done it.
00:54:45Reutemann takes fourth position
00:54:47on lap 38 from Didier Pironi,
00:54:51and if he can pull out a gap,
00:54:54and he's doing it already
00:54:55as they go into the Lesbo bend,
00:54:58if he can pull out a gap,
00:55:00Pironi won't be able to do anything about it
00:55:02as they go down to the Parabolica.
00:55:04Replace!
00:55:06Reutemann's just doing a classic out-braking manoeuvre.
00:55:09He's been noticeable how he's been closing up
00:55:11on the Ferrari under-braking every time.
00:55:13The Ferrari, honestly,
00:55:14it's sad to say with such a fine pedigree
00:55:17and that great name,
00:55:17but it really is a bit of a tank,
00:55:19but it's got this magnificent engine
00:55:21with a great deal of power,
00:55:22and its performances, really,
00:55:24have depended entirely on that this year,
00:55:27and you can see now that Reutemann
00:55:28has cheered up again.
00:55:30All wet weather stuff has forgotten,
00:55:32and he's really having a little charge now
00:55:34and going very well indeed.
00:55:45We've got Alan Gove.
00:55:47We won't see him
00:55:47because we're favouring Alain Prost
00:55:50as he goes round the Parabolica
00:55:52on his 40th lap
00:55:54in this Italian Grand Prix
00:55:55out of 52,
00:55:56and in the background
00:55:57on the right-hand side of the course
00:55:59was Alan Jones,
00:56:01but now we look at Carlos Reutemann
00:56:03who is in fourth place,
00:56:04and just look at the way
00:56:06that Carlos Reutemann
00:56:07is pulling away
00:56:08from Didier Pironi
00:56:10who is in fifth place,
00:56:11and you look back
00:56:12and you see Mario Andretti
00:56:14in sixth position
00:56:15on lap 40,
00:56:17closing up on Pironi.
00:56:19Nelson Piquet
00:56:25in third position,
00:56:27leading the World Championship
00:56:29at the moment
00:56:30and increasing his lead
00:56:32if he maintains this position
00:56:34because Carlos Reutemann
00:56:35is in fourth place behind him,
00:56:38and Reutemann is obviously
00:56:39in particular
00:56:40trying to catch Piquet,
00:56:41and we've lost,
00:56:43by the way,
00:56:43Derek Daly
00:56:44who was in ninth position
00:56:46for a long time.
00:56:47He's slipped down the field.
00:56:50He's in 11th position
00:56:51at the moment.
00:56:52Carlos Reutemann
00:56:53is in fourth place
00:56:55and gaining.
00:56:57Yes, at last
00:56:58we've got something
00:56:59to get a little bit more
00:57:01excitement for the race.
00:57:01We had so much excitement
00:57:02earlier on
00:57:04when the rain came down,
00:57:05what with all the dramas,
00:57:05that in all that excitement
00:57:07we lost so many cars
00:57:08that we were left
00:57:09in a bit of a recession,
00:57:10but Reutemann
00:57:10is definitely having a charge
00:57:12after Piquet,
00:57:13and of course
00:57:13that's the joint leaders
00:57:15of the World Championship
00:57:15locked in combat.
00:57:17They're still in touch
00:57:20with the lead
00:57:21of the championship
00:57:22in the distance
00:57:22in front of them
00:57:23on the schedule
00:57:24to score some more points,
00:57:25so anything that happens
00:57:27from now on
00:57:28looks as if it's going to put
00:57:30Constantine of the championship
00:57:32situation up yet further.
00:57:35Well, the really interesting
00:57:36thing at the moment
00:57:37is that Carlos Reutemann
00:57:38in fourth place
00:57:39is taking chunks
00:57:40out of Piquet's lead
00:57:42over him.
00:57:42It was 11.5 seconds
00:57:44and as you see
00:57:45from the caption there
00:57:46it's down to just
00:57:47under nine.
00:57:49But even if
00:57:50Carlos Reutemann
00:57:51catches Nelson Piquet,
00:57:55you know,
00:57:55it's a heck of a job
00:57:56to get past him
00:57:57because each will know
00:58:00that leading the World Championship
00:58:02jointly as they are,
00:58:04the one that finishes ahead
00:58:06will be in first place
00:58:08in the championship
00:58:09and the other will be second
00:58:10at the end of the race
00:58:12and it would only be
00:58:13one point difference.
00:58:15Well, there is Piquet.
00:58:16Look back for Carlos Reutemann.
00:58:17There he is.
00:58:18Now, that looks to me
00:58:20rather less than eight seconds
00:58:21although it is misleading
00:58:23because we're looking down
00:58:24the whole of the straight
00:58:25from the Parabolica
00:58:27to the Ascari bend
00:58:29but I'm going to put
00:58:29a stopwatch on them both
00:58:31as they complete
00:58:32their 41st lap
00:58:34and Mario Andretti
00:58:35in sixth position
00:58:36is right with
00:58:37Didier Pironi
00:58:38ahead of him
00:58:39in fifth place.
00:58:41And Piquet has crossed
00:58:42the line
00:58:43in third position.
00:58:45The seconds are ticking by
00:58:46and the gap
00:58:46between Piquet
00:58:47and Reutemann
00:58:48is still
00:58:49eight and a half seconds.
00:58:518.46 seconds.
00:58:53And the very, very good news
00:58:56is that John Watson
00:58:58who crashed so spectacularly
00:59:01earlier on
00:59:02is perfectly OK.
00:59:04He said he hooked
00:59:05two wheels over the curb,
00:59:07spun it and lost it.
00:59:08Well, we know that.
00:59:10I was very enormously relieved
00:59:12to know that John Watson
00:59:13is OK
00:59:14as the Alfa Romeo
00:59:16comes into the pitch
00:59:17and it's Mario Andretti.
00:59:19We've had Mario Andretti
00:59:21who was in sixth position
00:59:23and catching
00:59:24Nelson Piquet
00:59:27Pironi,
00:59:29catching Pironi.
00:59:30There is Pironi
00:59:31and to confirm it
00:59:32there behind
00:59:34Pironi
00:59:35is Elio De Ancelis
00:59:37who has now moved up
00:59:38into sixth position.
00:59:41Well,
00:59:42both Alfa Romeo
00:59:43is in trouble
00:59:44because
00:59:45although
00:59:47Giacomelli
00:59:48makes appearances
00:59:49from time to time
00:59:51he's very much
00:59:52out of the race
00:59:53and on lap 43
00:59:55in this Italian Grand Prix
00:59:57the gap
00:59:58between number five
00:59:59Nelson Piquet
01:00:01and in the background
01:00:01number two
01:00:02Carlos Reutemann
01:00:03is still
01:00:04eight and a half seconds.
01:00:06I must say
01:00:06it looks closer than that
01:00:07visually
01:00:08but
01:00:09who am I to argue
01:00:10it's extremely sophisticated
01:00:12electronic
01:00:12timing equipment
01:00:14as we look down
01:00:15on Brian Henson's
01:00:16Tolman
01:00:17going through
01:00:18with the Reti Piccio bend
01:00:19and across the line
01:00:20goes Piquet again
01:00:22that's 42 laps
01:00:24completed
01:00:24for the Brazilian
01:00:25and this time
01:00:27the gap
01:00:28is 7.2 seconds
01:00:30so Carlos Reutemann
01:00:32is definitely
01:00:33no shadow of doubt
01:00:34about it
01:00:35gaining on Nelson Piquet
01:00:377 seconds
01:00:38is the gap
01:00:39between the third
01:00:40and fourth men
01:00:41who are jointly
01:00:42leading the world championship
01:00:44no change in the lead
01:00:46of course
01:00:46on lap 43
01:00:47with Alain Prost
01:00:4918 seconds ahead
01:00:51of Alan Jones
01:00:52and Alan Jones
01:00:54is 36 seconds ahead
01:00:56of Nelson Piquet
01:00:57so unless
01:00:57either Prost
01:00:59or Jones
01:01:00have some kind
01:01:01of mechanical trouble
01:01:02it would seem
01:01:03that the first
01:01:04two places
01:01:05of the Italian Grand Prix
01:01:06are settled
01:01:07but the battle
01:01:09for third
01:01:10rages
01:01:10with Carlos Reutemann
01:01:12gaining lap by lap
01:01:13on Nelson Piquet
01:01:15and it could be
01:01:16very very close
01:01:17at the end
01:01:18as we look down
01:01:19now
01:01:20on the distinctive
01:01:21yellow and white
01:01:22Renault
01:01:22of Alain Prost
01:01:24exiting
01:01:26the Reti Piccio bends
01:01:27going round
01:01:28the Curva Grande
01:01:29and the next car
01:01:30if you see one
01:01:31will be Alan Jones
01:01:32and William
01:01:33and Brian Henton
01:01:35is now up
01:01:36into 11th place
01:01:373 laps down
01:01:38but he is still
01:01:40very much
01:01:41in the running
01:01:42as
01:01:42anyone take care of Jane?
01:01:55now end of his
01:01:5644th lap
01:01:58in 5th position
01:01:59is still
01:02:03in 5th point
01:02:28Well, you rejoin us on the 46th lap
01:02:37and there is no change for the leadership
01:02:39as we look at the broken remains of John Watson's car
01:02:42and as you just heard, John Watson is perfectly okay.
01:02:45There is Carlos Reutemann
01:02:48who is doing extremely well
01:02:51because Carlos Reutemann is gaining all the time
01:02:55on Nelson Piquet who is in third position
01:02:57and Alan Jones is still second.
01:03:00So, on the 46th lap now, out of 52,
01:03:06Alain Prost is on his way in the turbocharged Renault
01:03:10to his third Grand Prix victory of 1981
01:03:13as Brian Hinton crosses the line in the Coleman
01:03:17and Hinton is now up into 10th position
01:03:20as we look at Nelson Piquet
01:03:22and there are two terrific battles raging in the first six.
01:03:26This one between Nelson Piquet who is in third position
01:03:31and there in fourth place gaining on Piquet
01:03:34at the rate of approximately a second lap,
01:03:37Carlos Reutemann.
01:03:38And, of course, Carlos Reutemann and Nelson Piquet
01:03:41are tying for the World Championship League
01:03:44at the present moment and there are four points for third position
01:03:49which number five Piquet has got.
01:03:52There are three points for fourth position
01:03:54which Carlos Reutemann is in.
01:03:57So, it is absolutely critical for the World Championship leadership
01:04:01whether Nelson Piquet or Carlos Reutemann finishes in third and fourth positions.
01:04:07There would be no doubt about who is going to win Alain Prost
01:04:11or who will be second, Alan Jones.
01:04:20And as you look at Nelson Piquet in third position
01:04:24you may be wondering, obviously, what happened to Bruno Giacomelli.
01:04:28The answer is that the young Italian in the offer of Mayo
01:04:32who had fought his way up into third position brilliantly
01:04:35went into the pits, came out, went into the pits again
01:04:39and he is now still running in eighth position
01:04:42but two laps adrift and we are now on lap 47
01:04:47with Alain Prost leading, Alan Jones in second position,
01:04:54Nelson Piquet in third, Patrick Tombe
01:04:57who was battling for third position earlier on in the race
01:05:01is right down in 13th position.
01:05:04Indeed, he's out of the race.
01:05:05Because some 23 laps ago he had to retire
01:05:09so Prost leads Jones, Piquet is third with Reutemann gaining.
01:05:14De Angelis is in fifth place and Pironi is in sixth position
01:05:18and we are on lap 47.
01:05:30I'm waiting for Alan Jones to go through
01:05:33and Jones does it now
01:05:34but the gap is up again, it's eight seconds, eight seconds
01:05:40so Jones gains but he didn't gain anything on that particular lap.
01:05:45He's really flying now though
01:05:47and it's just conceivable that...
01:05:50but let's check again, Alan Jones is still gaining on the race leader Alain Prost.
01:06:00It's only eight seconds between them now with four laps to go.
01:06:04He's gaining, continuing to gain at the rate of two seconds left
01:06:08and Nelson Piquet comes towards us in third place
01:06:12and Reutemann is close to Nelson Piquet too
01:06:15so there could be some real drama and excitement in the closing stages of this Italian Grand Prix.
01:06:21There goes Reutemann in fourth place, there is Piquet
01:06:24and Piquet is only exiting the ready feature as Reutemann goes into it.
01:06:30Brian Hinton is still running in tenth position, there is the Brazilian who is third
01:06:35and restate quickly lap 49 out of 52, Alain Prost and Alan Jones first and second.
01:06:44You saw there the gap between Piquet and Reutemann
01:06:47and there it is visually
01:06:49and Piquet has ahead of him Jean-Pierre Jarié in the brand new first race Othello.
01:06:57But what is the gap now?
01:07:00Carlos Reutemann is quickest then.
01:07:02Carlos Reutemann is really speeding up.
01:07:04One minute 37.5
01:07:06and Alain Prost has completed his lap.
01:07:09It was eight seconds gap
01:07:11and the gap now between Prost and Jones is nine seconds.
01:07:17So, Prost is holding his lead
01:07:20and it looks now with the Frenchman on lap 50 out of 52
01:07:26as though Alan Jones' late charge is not going to be fast enough.
01:07:32Piquet goes through and takes Jean-Pierre Jarié, laps him in ninth position, Jariéé.
01:07:38Here is the fourth place man, Reutemann.
01:07:41It's an interesting situation because it seems that all the leaders have speeded up now
01:07:45because I think Piquet has responded to Reutemann's charge.
01:07:48There's no doubt that Reutemann's been going quicker than after that.
01:07:52But Piquet has responded because Reutemann is now closing the gap
01:07:55at a two slower rate, although he seemed to be a little bit closer as they went by then.
01:08:01There's Piquet going through the chicane.
01:08:03Reutemann's just out of shot but he's not far behind.
01:08:05He's very much in visual range.
01:08:08He can see Piquet's car and Jones was charging away at Prost
01:08:13and then a left-handed man up or something
01:08:16but Prost seemed suddenly to respond.
01:08:19I think he was probably letting the gap get down in about ten seconds
01:08:22and then decided he'd better do something about it.
01:08:24So maybe all the excitement we're getting up here from gap-watching
01:08:27is a little bit of a false excitement
01:08:29and that the leading drivers in each battle
01:08:33has been taking it easy
01:08:35and with something he has to respond as if when necessary.
01:08:40Carlos Reutemann
01:08:42just under five seconds
01:08:44behind Nelson Piquet
01:08:47and the race leader, Alain Post, is a turbocharged Renault
01:08:51on his way to his second Grand Prix win in succession
01:08:56because he won the last one in Holland two weeks ago.
01:09:00He's now on lap 51 out of 52
01:09:02and Carlos Reutemann may be gaining on Nelson Piquet.
01:09:07Indeed, the gap is five seconds now
01:09:10but I would doubt that Carlos Reutemann is going to
01:09:13get close enough to Nelson Piquet to challenge him
01:09:16in the remaining two laps
01:09:18because they are on lap 51.
01:09:20It's the last lap but one
01:09:21and as you saw, Elio De Angelis is in fifth position
01:09:26and Didier Pironi is still in sixth place
01:09:29and there is the race leader, Alain Post.
01:09:34He's going on his way down to the Villaloni,
01:09:37the first half of the comparatively new chicane
01:09:41and then from the Villaloni, which is the left-hander,
01:09:44he goes into the Ascari bend in third gear.
01:09:47There he is now, Alain Post, the Grand Prix sensation of 1981
01:09:54as we look at the Frenchman
01:09:59catching up on Pironi.
01:10:01He's going to lap everybody up to certainly seventh position
01:10:05which is Ascari bend in Cesaris
01:10:07and when Alain Post comes out of the Parabolica
01:10:11which he is entering now
01:10:13and entering our side into the long straight
01:10:16down to the red is he goes
01:10:17it will be to start his last lap.
01:10:22Over the line goes Alain Post
01:10:25he is now on lap 52
01:10:27which is his last lap
01:10:28and we'll see what the gap is between him and Alain Jones.
01:10:32It had been extended to 11 seconds
01:10:35and Jones, far from gaining on Prost
01:10:38is now definitely dropping back
01:10:40because it's 16 seconds now.
01:10:43If anybody's in trouble on the last lap
01:10:46it's Alain Jones
01:10:47and don't forget that he has got a broken finger
01:10:52and his engine sounding very, very rough
01:10:54as he rumpled over the line
01:10:56but Alain Jones there in second position
01:10:58has got an enormous cushion
01:11:00between himself and Nelson Piquet
01:11:0235 seconds
01:11:04so if he can just keep the Williams going
01:11:06he will be secure for second place
01:11:09and Piquet in third position
01:11:11is now just 4.25 seconds ahead of Karl-Ondreuth
01:11:17and will therefore be leading the world championship
01:11:20by one point
01:11:22and the world championship really is
01:11:24going down to the last race of the year
01:11:26and who is that?
01:11:27It looked like Piquet from the back
01:11:29the red helmet
01:11:30and it's Reutemann gaining
01:11:31there's an injured explosion
01:11:33and it's Piquet
01:11:34it is Piquet
01:11:35on the very last lap
01:11:37Reutemann takes that third position
01:11:39from Nelson Piquet
01:11:40tremendous drama
01:11:42and Karl-Ondreuth
01:11:43Reutemann has held his position
01:11:46in the world championship
01:11:47and Nelson Piquet
01:11:49can he finish the last lap?
01:11:52what enormous drama
01:11:53because Didier Pironi is now gaining
01:11:57as Alain Prost comes out of the parabolic
01:11:59and the Frenchman in the Renault
01:12:01is going to win his third Grand Prix of 1981
01:12:05he crosses the line
01:12:07he crosses the line
01:12:07sure
01:12:07Alain Prost tours in
01:12:10but the sensation is not so much that Prost has won
01:12:14but where is Alan Jones going to be
01:12:17because he was dropping back on the second lap
01:12:19there is the Australian
01:12:20coming out of the parabolica
01:12:22he's going to be in second position
01:12:24but he looks to me as though he's going pretty slowly
01:12:27and Alain Prost tours
01:12:28Alain Jones tours across the line as well
01:12:31now we wait for the third place man
01:12:34and to see in particular
01:12:35where Nelson Piquet is going to finish
01:12:38because Carlos Reutemann
01:12:40is certainly still leading the world championship
01:12:42if he just comes into our sight
01:12:44round the parabolica next
01:12:45and where is Reutemann?
01:12:48there he is
01:12:49Williams-Cars finished second and third
01:12:52the world champion Alain Jones finishes second
01:12:54and Carlos Reutemann consolidates
01:12:57his world championship lead
01:12:59by finishing in third position
01:13:01and getting four points
01:13:02now
01:13:03who is going to be fourth?
01:13:05is he going to be Piquet?
01:13:07well there is Piquet
01:13:08still struggling on
01:13:10who has he been passed by
01:13:12on this last lap?
01:13:14we're looking of course
01:13:15at the Brazilian in the Brabham
01:13:16and he's obviously got no motive power
01:13:19and he's touring off
01:13:20Piquet retires
01:13:21no points
01:13:22no points for the Brazilian
01:13:24so that's making his world championship chances
01:13:27very very tricksy indeed
01:13:30because Elio De Angelis in the Lotus
01:13:33crosses the line
01:13:35and he's going to finish
01:13:36as he comes very slowly indeed
01:13:39in fourth position
01:13:40with Pironi in fifth place
01:13:42and that will put Andrea De Cesaris
01:13:45I think up into sixth position
01:13:48and
01:13:54you
01:13:55and
01:13:56you
01:13:59and
01:13:59and
01:14:01you
01:14:01and
