00:00Some people describe it as rotten socks mixed with custard.
00:04I describe it as the nectar of the gods.
00:06Once I crack this open, it's not going back in, guys.
00:09The smell is like bananas.
00:16Hey, I'm Henry Golding, and this is Snack Wars for Ladbible.
00:20All right, so we are doing Malaysia versus England,
00:22because I'm half Malaysian and half British.
00:26So I'm looking forward to it, because I haven't been back
00:28to Malaysia for a while, so I'm curious to see
00:31what you guys have dug up.
00:32What have we got?
00:34Oh, no, why'd you do this to me?
00:37These are like my two favorite crisps from each nation.
00:41Pickled onion monster munch, and mommy noodles.
00:45Lord, with extra seasoning?
00:47Or have you opened it?
00:49No, no, no, it came in, yeah.
00:52OK, I'm going to have to start with this.
00:54So here's the deal.
00:54So it's pretty much like your instant noodles,
00:59but without water, and it's just sort of crisp.
01:02Look, I'll give you a little show.
01:04It's like noodles, it's like dry noodles.
01:07What you've got to do is you've got to crush it up
01:13until it's all these little pieces,
01:15and then you've got to put the flavoring in there.
01:19So this is pretty much just MSG, the good stuff.
01:24There's only one way to eat it,
01:25so you've got to do one of these.
01:30And you can't get them out, like, bit by bit.
01:32You literally just have to pour them.
01:36Mm.
01:38Hear that crunch?
01:40Yeah.
01:42These are amazing.
01:43This is going to be hard to beat,
01:44but if there was a contender,
01:47pickled onion monster munch would be it.
01:51These are insane, OK.
01:52So I got to tell you, like, every time I,
01:54now that I live in the UK, I have easy accesses,
01:57but every time I sort of visited
01:58when I was living in the States,
02:00I would literally buy a 12-pack of monster munch
02:05at, like, Tesco's and just work my way through
02:07within one evening, just, like, and by the end of it,
02:10my mouth would be, like, dry and puckered
02:13from all the vinegar and, like,
02:14the pickled onion-ness.
02:19Mm.
02:21Oh, that's so tough.
02:23These guys are horrible.
02:25I'm going to give it to the Malaysians, though.
02:26Mami is hard to beat.
02:28Is that, like, a classic, like, kid snack, or...?
02:31Classic kid snack slash adult snack.
02:35But, yeah, these are insane.
02:37And if you're feeling really adventurous,
02:39double up on the powder.
02:41Oh.
02:42Oh.
02:43Oh, oh.
02:44Oh.
02:45Okay.
02:46Jam tarts.
02:47Pretty British.
02:49Old M&S.
02:51You know?
02:52Not too shabby.
02:53But what is this?
02:54This is durian biscuits.
02:57Wow.
02:58You guys went to the Asian store and just, like...
03:01We had a field day, didn't you?
03:03Okay, so, couldn't get the fresh durian,
03:06because I'm, like, a big durian fan.
03:09But this is the Musang King flavor.
03:11So Musang King is, like, one of the higher grade of durian.
03:16And for someone that doesn't know what durian is,
03:18what piece are you able to explain?
03:19Oh, my God.
03:20Durian is, like, it's the king of fruit.
03:21I mean, it's undescribable in flavor.
03:23Some people describe it as kind of rotten socks mixed with custard.
03:27I describe it as the nectar of the gods.
03:30And so do many Malaysians.
03:32So you're missing out.
03:34This is the dry version, so it's kind of, you know,
03:37there's nothing like fresh durian.
03:39And in Malaysia, little known fact,
03:41during the season of durian,
03:45they have, like, durian buffets.
03:47So you pay, like, a certain amount of money
03:49and just sit there eating all of this, like, durian,
03:52with your friends and stuff.
03:53So I miss that.
03:55Once I crack this open, it's not going back in, guys.
03:58The smell is, like, bananas.
04:00So, okay, it's not too bad.
04:03I mean, I can smell it there.
04:05But these are biscuits.
04:07So this will be interesting.
04:09And you guys are going to make me stink for the rest of the day
04:12with Anna and Blake, like, in the other rooms.
04:14Thanks, guys.
04:15I appreciate it.
04:16Oh, my God.
04:17What is this?
04:18What?
04:19So it's a biscuit with durian inside.
04:25It's very strong.
04:28That's really strong.
04:31I don't know what to think about that.
04:34Less said, the better.
04:36I don't want to offend any Malaysians out there.
04:38But that, you know, that's a very specific durian flavor.
04:42Not going to take them to the buffet?
04:44Maybe not.
04:45I mean, these are your traditional tarts, right?
04:47I don't want to go.
04:48Let's have a taste.
04:52Lighter.
04:53Sweeter.
04:57I've got to go with the durian.
04:59It's like, the Malaysians will hate me if I don't go for it.
05:02And I wish that you guys brought real durian.
05:04That would have been light.
05:05I don't think it's allowed in many hotels.
05:07Because in Singapore and Malaysia, they actually have a sign
05:10at the front saying that you cannot bring durian into this hotel
05:14because it stinks.
05:15It literally will permeate this entire room and the hall
05:19down that way.
05:20So, anyway, next time, some real durian.
05:27Oh, okay.
05:29Teitare.
05:30Awesome.
05:31Proper Malaysian drink.
05:33It's going to be shaken, you know.
05:35Teitare is like, it's pulled, pulled tea.
05:39So they do this sort of pour where they kind of like...
05:42And the water kind of cools off and bubbles and I'll give it
05:47a little shake.
05:48But this is like the staple Malaysian morning drink.
05:52You go sit at like a, what they call a mamak store in the
05:56mornings and the evenings and you have your roti chanai,
06:00your teitare.
06:01And this is a staple for sure.
06:07Oh, it's great.
06:08It's like sweet tea.
06:09Very special.
06:11Yazoo.
06:12You see this?
06:13I don't know.
06:14Because I wasn't one of those like posh kids who had kind of
06:18packed lunches with like chocolate milk in it.
06:20You know, I think my parents shopped at Lidl when I was like
06:23growing up.
06:24So we had like German sort of fruit juice.
06:27Like things like that.
06:28So Yazoo was like a luxury back in the day.
06:31I'm going to beat this Malaysian teitare up.
06:34It's good.
06:38It's pretty good, but we're going to say teitare.
06:41Ooh.
06:43Jaffa cakes.
06:45Yes.
06:46What are these?
06:48Oh, these are like little coconut balls.
06:50Let's have a look.
06:51These are very traditional.
06:53They're like Malaysian kwe.
06:55Who's been eating these?
06:57There's usually like six guys in here.
06:59What is this?
07:00There's like five?
07:01Who's had one?
07:02You did it!
07:03I knew it!
07:04God, I got stiffed.
07:05I had to try it before we served it.
07:06I was like, I've got to try this.
07:07You could have taken out an even number.
07:08Like you just did one.
07:09All right, here we go.
07:10Mmm.
07:11Okay.
07:12Black bean?
07:13Yeah, it's like a bean, a sweet bean paste.
07:14Yeah.
07:15Yeah.
07:16It's good.
07:17Not the best sort.
07:18Yeah.
07:19Yeah.
07:20Yeah.
07:21It's good.
07:22It's good.
07:23It's good.
07:24It's good.
07:25It's good.
07:26Not the best sort.
07:28Jaffa Cakes.
07:29These are classic.
07:30You can't beat.
07:31Those Jaffa Cakes are amazing.
07:32They're cake or biscuit?
07:33Mmm.
07:34I would say it's biscuit aesthetic.
07:35Good taste.
07:36Jaffa Cakes for sure.
07:37Oh, yes.
07:38Okay.
07:39Oh my god.
07:40Scampi flavor.
07:41Oh my god.
07:42Scampi flavor.
07:43Oh my god.
07:44Oh my god.
07:45Oh my god.
07:46Scampi flavor.
07:47Oh my god.
07:48Oh my god.
07:49Oh my god.
07:50Oh my god.
07:51Oh my god.
07:52Oh my god.
07:53Oh my god.
07:54Oh my god.
07:55Oh my god.
07:56Oh my god.
07:57Scampi flavored crisps.
07:59Now scampi is just like one of those like typically British flavors.
08:04These are like crab sort of, I wouldn't even call them crisps.
08:08They're sort of biscuit crisps.
08:11But I used to have these as a kid when I was like probably like five to six year old.
08:16Meanies.
08:17I'm gonna start with these first.
08:19These are amazing.
08:20I can get into them.
08:22I can get into them.
08:23Alright.
08:24Here we go.
08:25Look at that.
08:26Little puffs.
08:27Oh crap goodness.
08:29These are probably made like five years ago for the preservatives.
08:32Like keep them fresh.
08:33So there's like all sorts of e-numbers.
08:37So good.
08:39Flavor of my childhood.
08:41Scampi style.
08:42Yeah.
08:43I wasn't a huge fan growing up.
08:45But again, it's like these little puff things.
08:49Oh.
08:50Oh.
08:51So this has lemon in it as well.
08:54Okay.
08:55It's kind of like salt and vinegary.
08:57Got to go with these babies.
08:59Oh yeah.
09:00The crab flavored little puffs.
09:02I don't even know what to call them.
09:04Winner.
09:05Great.
09:06Going to Malaysia.
09:07That's awesome.
09:08These are crazy.
09:09Good pub stuff.
09:10Yeah.
09:11These are good.
09:12Yeah.
09:13But I didn't think they would be lemony.
09:14It's good with a hot beer.
09:15Mmm.
09:16Malaysia one.
09:17Yay!
09:19Malaysia Bole, as they say.
09:21Is there like theme music like Star Wars?
09:23It goes like da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
