01:48Will this be the most expensive Mother's Day ever?
01:52How to save money while still keeping mom happy.
01:55Now, Inside Edition with Deborah Norville.
01:59Hello, everybody, and thank you for joining us.
02:02The new Pope is American.
02:04For the first time ever, a cardinal born in the United States has just been appointed the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
02:11Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected to lead the world's 1.4 billion Catholics.
02:16And he has chosen as his papal name, Leo.
02:19He will be Pope Leo XIV.
02:21Reaction to his selection was electric, both here in the United States and in the square outside St. Peter's.
02:28Mary Calvary is in Vatican City, where that news is still sinking in.
02:33A moment of sheer drama.
02:40The first American pope in history steps onto the balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square.
02:49Oh, we have an American pope!
02:52We have an American pope!
02:53He's 69-year-old Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago, to be known as Pope Leo XIV.
03:02We have an American pope!
03:03First time in history never before has America had a pope!
03:07But this time we are making history!
03:09It is a stunning choice.
03:11Most experts believe the election of an American as pope would never happen.
03:15He was made a cardinal by Pope Francis only in 2023.
03:19The crowds in St. Peter's chanted over and over, Viva Papa! Viva Papa! Long live the pope!
03:34The square became alive with pageantry to celebrate the election with Swiss guards and a marching band.
03:40The bells are ringing on St. Peter's Basilica.
03:47The crowd is cheering wildly.
03:50Thousands that are gathered, tens of thousands more, are waiting to enter St. Peter's Square on the roads there.
03:57But what a moment to be here in St. Peter's Square.
04:00It is the second day of the conclave, and day two is when we saw the last popes elected.
04:07The major networks broke into programming with the news of an American pope in the scenes in St. Peter's Square.
04:13An amazing surprise for the church and the world.
04:17This is stunning, absolutely stunning.
04:19And Americans among the crowd expressed enormous pride in this extraordinary moment of history.
04:25How do you feel about this, an American pope?
04:27What an extraordinary moment, an American pope.
04:36It's a true privilege to be here and witness this historic moment.
04:41Deborah, back to you in our New York studio.
04:43Thanks, Mary.
04:44So who is the man to be known as Pope Leo XIV?
04:47Born in Chicago, he served as a missionary for 30 years, much of in Peru, and became a cardinal less than two years ago.
04:54Stephen Fabian has more.
04:57The first ever American pope.
05:00Robert Francis Prevost is 69 years old.
05:03He was raised in Dalton, Illinois, just outside Chicago.
05:06He is also a dual citizen of Peru.
05:10This is a missionary.
05:11This is a parish priest.
05:13This is a teacher who speaks five languages.
05:17The election of the first American-born pope as the leader of the Catholic Church is sending shockwaves around the world.
05:24Many believed an American could never become pope.
05:28They've always said you'd never get an American pope.
05:30Look, America is a huge superpower.
05:33It's too big a footprint in the world.
05:34Serving the Roman Catholic Church runs in his family.
05:37Two of his aunts are nuns.
05:39Here he is in his second-grade class at St. Mary of the Assumption School in Dalton.
05:43He was a math major at Villanova University outside Philadelphia.
05:47Did this photo predict his future?
05:50In 1982, he met then-Pope John II.
05:53He's only been a cardinal since 2023 when he was appointed by Pope Francis.
05:58I have been a missionary my whole life, and I was working in Peru, but I am American, and I think I do have some insights into the church in the United States.
06:08The new American pope is a big surprise, elected over the top papal contender Pietro Perilin, the Vatican's secretary of state,
06:16who sealed Pope Francis' Vatican apartment with a red ribbon following his death.
06:21Another top contender was 67-year-old Cardinal Luis Antonio Tegel from the Philippines, who was known for his singing and dancing.
06:33Had he been named, he would have been the world's first pope from Asia.
06:37But now, in a moment that stunned the world, we have the first-ever pope from the good old USA.
06:45Before that white smoke appeared, the world was wondering what was happening inside the conclave.
06:50It was so top-secret that the Vatican even monitored the food being served to make sure no hidden messages were being passed between the cardinals and the outside world.
07:01There were gasps of disappointment this morning when black smoke billowed out of the chimney,
07:06indicating the latest ballots had failed to produce a two-thirds majority.
07:11Mary Calvey spoke with CBS Mornings co-host Tony DeCoppo.
07:14Tony, there's such an atmosphere of, like, tension and anticipation as we watch that chimney.
07:19There's a little note of disappointment, but then really there are cheers.
07:23And I think people are cheering not for the new pope that's yet to be announced, but for the process, for the history, for the drama.
07:30At 12.30 p.m. Rome time, the Cardinals broke for what was a crucial working lunch.
07:35The food was deliberately bland.
07:37There are limitations on the menu to make sure messages from the outside are not getting to the Cardinals.
07:43So, a roast chicken, there's obviously a cavity there.
07:46I don't know what's inside.
07:47We're not going to do that.
07:48Ravioli, a little bit of a complicated pasta.
07:51It's got some spinach and cheese in it.
07:52Wait, it could have a message.
07:53They're not going to serve that.
07:55It's just simple pastas, simple dishes broken down to make sure everything is secure while also providing a little sustenance.
08:01And Vatican expert Michael Sean Winters says the food encourages the Cardinals to reach a decision.
08:07Do you think it's any good?
08:09There's already been complaints by the Italians about it.
08:12But that may expedite the proceeding.
08:17Looks like it works.
08:18After lunch, at 6.07 p.m. local time, white smoke.
08:23Jack and Marissa McGowan from Tampa are on their honeymoon and found themselves with a ringside seat to history.
08:30This is a lot to come to after the whole wedding thing.
08:32That's so meaningful to add this to your honeymoon.
08:35I know.
08:36It's so much special.
08:36We couldn't miss it.
08:37George Murphy is from Washington, D.C.
08:39It was a very emotional feeling for me to just kind of realize, like, where we are right now, what's happening,
08:44and that our prayers matter is something that's always a very cool thing to think about.
08:48Our prayers matter.
08:50A new pope, of all things an American, a new leader for the world's one and a half billion Catholics.
08:59We'll have more on the announcement of the new pope a little bit later in the broadcast.
09:03President Trump is scheduled to hold a fundraiser at the Kennedy Center next month.
09:07It'll be the first big event he'll attend at that venue since he took control of the board.
09:11Now, the plan was to have a performance of his favorite musical, Les Mis, but many of the performers are planning a boycott.
09:18That news comes as the first lady has been seen in a place where she rarely appears, the White House.
09:25Welcome.
09:26First Lady Melania is at the president's side today in a rare White House appearance.
09:32It comes as a new report claims she has spent fewer than 14 days at the White House since the inauguration nearly four months ago,
09:40preferring Trump Tower in Manhattan or Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach.
09:45She has hired staff to work for her in the East Wing, says the New York Times, but she rarely goes into the office.
09:51So, what brought her out today? An event celebrating military moms, just in time for Mother's Day.
09:58Happy Mother's Day, everyone.
10:01Meanwhile, the Trump administration is hitting back today at the cast of the musical Les Miserables
10:06for threatening to boycott Trump's first appearance at the Kennedy Center in June.
10:14At least 10 members of the cast are reportedly refusing to perform for the president.
10:19Now, Trump's hand-picked Kennedy Center chairman is lashing out at the cast, calling for them to be blacklisted.
10:28Any performer who isn't professional enough to perform for patrons of all backgrounds won't be welcomed.
10:34In fact, we think it would be important to out those vapid and intolerant artists to ensure producers know who they shouldn't hire.
10:43Les Mis producers say the show will go on, presumably with understudies.
10:49And Joe Biden returned to the spotlight today.
10:53How are ya?
10:53He was joined on The View by Dr. Jill, and they revealed that they realized, as it was happening,
11:00that his debate with Trump was a train wreck.
11:03It wasn't a great night. It was a bad night.
11:05Terrible night.
11:06I went onto the stage after the debate. I mean, we all saw it. It was terrible.
11:10And Joe looked at me and he said, I screwed up.
11:13And I said, yeah, you did, Joe. We were not going to let 90 minutes of a debate define his presidency and all those years of service.
11:23Well, Dr. Biden, I do want to ask you.
11:25In other news, the man charged with felony stalking and vandalism after crashing into the gate of Jennifer Aniston's Los Angeles home was in front of a judge today, shirtless.
11:35Jim Murray was there.
11:37Jennifer Aniston's accused stalker made his first court appearance today.
11:42Jimmy Carwile appeared shirtless. His suicide vest fell off his shoulders.
11:46His bail was set at $150,000.
11:49He was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
11:53The judge also ordered he was not to have contact with Jennifer Aniston and stay at least 100 yards away from her home.
12:01The 48-year-old mechanic from Mississippi and an obsessed fan is accused of crashing through her security gate while the actress was home on Monday.
12:10Judy has a suspect at gunpoint.
12:11Steve Ray has known the suspect for more than 40 years.
12:15He says Carwile has been living out of his car for several months.
12:18He wasn't born this way, and I wish we could get him help.
12:21His family definitely wants to get him help.
12:24If convicted, Jimmy Carwile faces three years in state prison.
12:29Carwile would be back in court May 22nd for a competency hearing.
12:34In a standard procedure, when a big game ends, the spectators leave.
12:37But some Knicks fans were so stoked over their team's amazing comeback in Game 2 of the playoffs last night in Boston, they wouldn't go home.
12:45And that led to a very frustrated security guard.
12:48New York Knicks fans are going bonkers in Boston.
12:52Knicks is bonkers!
12:54Get down the aisle!
12:55Nope, they weren't budging.
12:57Their team beat the Boston Celtics 91-90 in a stunning come-from-behind triumph.
13:03They've got it!
13:05They've won it!
13:05But after the game was over, die-hard Knicks fans just wouldn't leave the arena.
13:10Security!
13:12Help!
13:13This usher stumbled as she yelled for help.
13:16Get this man out!
13:17I'm out!
13:18The fans completely ignored her.
13:20Their chant getting even louder.
13:23Game 3 of the playoffs will be Saturday.
13:27The Celtics come to New York, take on the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
13:30We'll be back with more Inside Edition right after this.
13:33Next, Mother's Day 2025.
13:37Will this be the most expensive Mother's Day ever?
13:40How to save money while still keeping mom happy.
13:43And they shrunk the conclave.
13:47It's the mini-pope.
13:49Inside Edition with Deborah Norville will be right back.

16:39The first American pope in history.
16:42Joy and excitement around the world.
16:44What we've learned about the new pope from outside Chicago.
16:47The National Retail Association says the average American spends $259 on Mother's Day.
16:57And a lot of that is on flowers.
16:59But this year, flowers may be more expensive due to the tariffs on imported goods.
17:04Allison Hall now with some money-saving tips.
17:07It's a fact.
17:08Flowers are the number one gift choice for Americans celebrating mom this Sunday.
17:13But with tariffs looming, this is shaping up to be the most expensive Mother's Day ever.
17:19Absolutely.
17:20There's no doubt.
17:21Are customers now having to pay a lot more for flowers, especially with Mother's Day coming up?
17:26They have to pay more.
17:27I'm trying to swallow some.
17:30Because I want my customers to come back.
17:32But it is tough.
17:34Yossi Benhamou of Mattel's Florist in Manhattan says he's not sure how long he can keep costs down.
17:40Add some greens and filler with it, and that'll be about $50, $60.
17:44At nearby Flowers on Essex, William Frazier is bracing for big changes.
17:50How many of the flowers around us are imported versus local?
17:54Basically, everything is imported.
17:56All our roses come from Ecuador.
17:59Hydrangeas and mums and flowers like that come from Colombia.
18:03Other flowers come from Holland.
18:05I'm not happy about it.
18:06I know it's going to start kicking in in a month or two, and then I guess we'll see how much we're going to feel the pinch on that.
18:12But a bouquet doesn't have to break the bank.
18:15There you go, Allison.
18:16A beautiful $30 bouquet.
18:18This is stunning, especially for $30.
18:20It's not just the rising cost of some flowers that's concerning to florists.
18:25It's also all of the material that's used to dress up those beautiful bouquets for mom this year.
18:32Check this out.
18:33This plastic packaging and most vases are all imported from China.
18:39Is it going to be the most expensive Mother's Day ever?
18:42My hope is not because a lot of the gifts we're buying mom are already on the shelves.
18:46They're not going to be impacted by tariffs.
18:48However, if you are buying something perishable, like flowers or foods, you will see higher prices if those items are imported.
18:56It's estimated Mother's Day flower sales account for about 25 to 30 percent of the annual flower sales here in the U.S.
19:02We'll be back with more Inside Edition right after this.
19:06Still to come, they shrunk the conclave.
19:10It's the mini-pope.

19:35MyBow.
19:36Oh, yeah.
19:38Remove contact lenses before using MyBow.
19:40Wait at least 30 minutes before putting them back in.
19:42Eye redness and blurred vision may occur.
19:44MyBow burns in the air.
19:46Ask your eye doctor about prescription MyBow.
19:49These dishes just aren't getting clean.

22:12They shrunk the conclave.
22:15These kids at a Catholic school outside Chicago, the new pope's birthplace, are holding their own conclave.
22:22The assembly room became the Sistine Chapel, and the students dressed up as cardinals.
22:27They even sent out white smoke after they made their pick.
22:31The kids went wild, and waving out the window, the new mini-pontiff, who's from Chicago, just like Pope Leo XIV.
22:42A little pope mini-me.

24:58Stop Jardians and call your doctor right away if you have nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness, trouble breathing, or increased ketones.
25:04Jardians may cause dehydration that can suddenly worsen kidney function and make you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or weak upon standing.
25:10Genital yeast infections in men and women, urinary tract infections, low blood sugar, or a rare life-threatening bacterial infection between and around the anus and genitals can occur.
25:18Call your doctor right away if you have fever or feel weak or tired and pain, tenderness, swelling, or redness in the genital area.
25:24Don't use if allergic to Jardians.
25:26Stop use if you have a serious allergic reaction.
25:28Call your doctor if you have rash, swelling, difficulty breathing, or swallowing.
25:31You may have increased risk for lower limb loss.
