00:00I
00:30We have smoke in St. Peter's Square now, so we will come back and it looks to be white.
00:41We have a smoke. This is good. This is incredible news here coming up here on 6.08 p.m. here
00:52in Rome at the Vatican and we have white smoke streaming out. And we hear the crowds.
01:02As you can see, now we got the camera work on there. This is amazing. Here we are.
01:09And celebrating this special moment. There was a brief moment where we were a little unsure, but it is confirmed it was white smoke.
01:19We have white smoke here. A smoke warning. A smoke warning. You are no longer watching.
01:24Oh my goodness. I was freaking out. We are back. We are back. I am so out of rats from racing up here. I can't believe it.
01:36I am actually surprised as well because given the complexity of the reality we were talking about.
01:42Exactly. And the many issues and the diversity. But here we are. And look at our drone footage there.
01:48We are just cruising over the roof of Sistine Chapel. We see the crowds.
01:52The bells are ringing. The bells are ringing. The bells are ringing. It is 100% white smoke.
01:57The white smoke. And I mean, as we were talking about before, the crowds are, I mean, it's the squares packed.
02:02It's incredible. And that's probably small compared to what's going on now.
02:06Exactly. And that's what just scared away our seagulls there. The family there that was just relaxing on Sistine Chapel roof there.
02:13But actually, as you mentioned at the beginning, TJ, it seemed like they did know they came back just for the white smoke.
02:18Indeed. Indeed. In fact, they were giving us a kind of a secret bit of information that they knew that we didn't know.
02:25Here we are. And then that spectacular, sunny, brilliant evening here.
02:30And you can even see from the perspective of the crowds there in St. Peter's Square, the white smoke billowing from the chimney,
02:38even as the sun starts going down behind the dome of St. Peter's there.
02:43And this smoke will last at least about six minutes, six and a half minutes.
02:49And with the light breeze there in the square, we can see it billowing down towards the square.
02:56And we've got now basically about, oh, it's going to be 45 minutes to at least an hour at least,
03:02before the new pope, just elected, appears to greet everyone.
03:09And so there's huge anticipation, naturally, of who will be the new successor of St. Peter V.
03:19I mean, as we were talking about before, you see the crowds filling the squares, but also the different people will come.
03:25I mean, you can see the flags waving, people smiling. It's a big sign of, you know, the universality of the church,
03:31but then also just how supportive people are in the sense of being here for this moment.
03:36And now we're going to have an invasion of Romans. They're going to be coming in.
03:41Oh, yes.
03:42No, it's only natural and normal when we live here. So those who can...
03:47And he's their bishop, too.
03:48What's that?
03:49He's their bishop, too.
03:50Of course, he's their bishop.
03:51And so they're going to be streaming into the square now. It's going to be filling up...
03:56It will make for some interesting traffic from my house because if the recollection is correct,
04:02when they couldn't get any further, they just left their cars in the road.
04:06So there you are.
04:08They were just there.
04:10In the road.
04:11In the road.
04:12Yeah.
04:13There's no odds to die.
04:14That's true.
04:15That's true.
04:16Look at that billowing, thick white smoke there.
04:19All the different flags.
04:20I love the people ready with their flags just in here.
04:23Yes.
04:24Yes.
04:25My daughter said that the election of Benedict Cousins, her closest friend,
04:30went to school right on the corner here.
04:32And her closest friend was German.
04:35And they went running out into the square and outcast Joseph Adams,
04:39and she said her friend had this teen-timer girl in her teenage growth course.
04:43She pulled out of this course.
04:45This enormous line was suddenly moving.
04:48Oh, my goodness.
04:49Apparently a lot of people come to parents.
04:51Yeah.
04:52Because you just never know.
04:53I mean, when I was in the square earlier, people thought, oh, no, it might be a longer time.
04:57It could take, you know, days.
04:58Yes.
04:59You just don't know.
05:00You just don't know.
05:01You just don't know.
05:02In fact, I didn't know what to expect.
05:04But at the same time, it's a wonderful surprise here to see the white smoke building there.
05:10And so after just, oh, day and a half, basically.
05:14And here we are.
05:16It does make you feel like there's a wonderful sense of the noise stopped.
05:21The cameras went off, they went into the chapel, they prayed, and the Holy Spirit spoke.
05:26I mean, it just really gives us a great sense of confidence.
05:30And indeed, this hope that's being realized that we have a new shepherd, so to speak.
05:36Someone to take on the reins there and to accompany us on this journey of our life journey.
05:43And it will be fascinating to see.
05:46As I say, you see the central lodge of St. Peter's Basilica.
05:49You see that's where the new pope will be appearing as it traditionally does to be announced.
05:57That we have a pope, and then the big surprise will be as he proceeds towards the central lodge
06:08and we see who that cardinal is, now dressed in white.
06:14Well, and for many people, they might be thinking, okay, why is there this long wait?
06:18As you mentioned, Thaddeus, why is there this long wait in between when we see the white smoke
06:23and when the new pope comes out into the loggia?
06:26And it's because there's a process that's going on right now.
06:28There is a very long process, which will be the oath of allegiance of the cardinals, of which there are 132 now.
06:38And we saw how long it took for the oath to the conflict.
06:45So I'm imagining it will take about that right for the oath of allegiance.
06:51Well, and also, Liz, you had mentioned before, way before in our discussion, the Room of Tears,
06:58which has become very central right now.
07:00So right now the new pope would have gone, or is it after?
07:06I would think that the ballots are burned after.
07:10I think he's already, and I think that's one of the reasons why this is kind of a funny hour.
07:15Right.
07:16As it got to be past five, I was thinking, I guess now we have to wait until seven.
07:21But I think this must have been the time that he spent in that Room of Tears thinking about preparing himself for what is,
07:31look at that square, and that square is just, it's a microcosm of the millions, if not billions, who are watching,
07:39all of them fixed to see, some of them already Christians, Catholics, but other people who are really searching.
07:46And there is so much searching going on in the world.
07:49And I don't know how many of the people that I've been working with in the secular media,
07:54who talk, oh, I used to be Catholic, or I went to Catholic school, or I was an older boy, or I was this.
08:00But they somehow feel this moment as still their own.
08:04It's the funny thing about those sacraments, right, Father?
08:07It's like, ah, hard to get rid of those.
08:09And so he's also the father to those people, and to all the others who don't even know that they're orphaned yet.
08:17All the people we pray for and defiled us.
08:19Exactly.
08:20And there's also a real life need going on in the volunteers as well,
08:25because probably the tailors are very busy adjusting one of those cassocks
08:30to be able, for the new Pope to be able to wear out onto the old chair.
08:34Oh, and don't forget the barber.
08:35Yes.
08:36There's a barber back there, just in case he needs, like, a shave and a trim or something.
08:39Like, some of them show up scruffy for the conflate.
08:41They're not expecting it.
08:42So they're probably going to get a barber back there.
08:45Also sworn to secrecy.
08:47But these are incredible moments, aren't they, though?
08:49Wow.
08:50And what a surprise.
08:51We were sending out that report on looking at history, and here we are, the smoke billowing
08:56out, and here we are, waiting now to see who the new Pope will be.
09:03Well, and as you mentioned, T.J.
09:05Thaddeus, this is, we had just heard in that archive interview, I remember where I was when
09:13Rancali was elected, and now we will all remember where we were at that moment when this new
09:18Pope was elected.
09:19I mean, we would have been here seeing these flags from South Korea, from Spain, from everywhere,
09:25from Serbia, you know, from Croatia.
09:27I mean, it's amazing to see.
09:30I mean, that I actually saw Papa Rancali here in Rome as a general audience.
09:36Did you really?
09:37Yes.
09:38I came as a child and was brought to the audience, and there he was being carried in on the Seria
09:44di Sattoria, and he really was the smiling, good Pope John.
09:48I mean, he was just so warm and lovely.
09:52Sure.
