In the year 1999, Indian Airlines Flight IC-814 was traveling from Kathmandu to Delhi. It was carrying 180 passengers who went on to live the worst nightmare of their lives. This is their story. This hijack is considered the worst Airplane Hijack ever in Indian history. For more than 7 days the plane flew from one location to another, from Lahore to Dubai and then to Afghanistan. See how the events unfolded and how the former Indian govt under Atal Bihari Vajpayee managed the situation.

00:00Hello friends, it is 24 December 1999, Indian Airlines flight IC814 takes off from Mandu
00:08This flight is going to Delhi and usually it takes about two hours to go from Kat Mandu to Delhi
00:14But the passengers and crew members sitting in this flight are unaware that the distance to Delhi is going to be very far for them.
00:23This plane is hijacked by five people and these hijackers demand a sum of 200 million dollars from the Indian Circus to release the passengers.
00:33Along with this there are some other big demands like releasing some terrorists from jail
00:38For the next seven days the whole country watches with bated breath the commotion on television news.
00:44A hijacking which was the biggest hijacking and the last plane hijacking in the history of India
00:51You heard it right friends, fortunately after this, no plane has been hijacked in India till date
00:57Let us understand this whole incident in depth. They are hearing from Katmandu on 24 December 1999. The Alliance plane has been hijacked today.
01:08Food is served to passengers on this flight shortly after it takes off from Katmandu
01:34While the passengers were eating their lunch, suddenly four masked men stood up
01:40They start eating people's food and announce in the flight that this plane has now been hijacked
01:46The hijackers quickly enter the pilot's cabin and hold Captain Devi Sharan at gunpoint and instruct her to keep flying in the west direction.
01:55Actually the hijackers wanted to take this plane to Pakistan
01:59So this plane comes from Delhi and takes off towards Pakistan
02:02specifically towards Lahore airport
02:05But the Pakistani air traffic control people at Lahore airport
02:09They strictly refused saying we will not let it land here
02:12On the other hand, in India, there is a news of hijacking of air traffic control every forty minutes between four and four.
02:18But the interesting thing is that our then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his Principal Secretary Brijesh Mishra came to know about it only after about an hour, at about five twenty minutes.
02:29For the next four minutes, Indian Air Traffic Control tries to make contact with Flight IC 814. Captain Devi Sharin Ine tells them that the plane is running low on fuel and is refused permission to land in Lahore.
02:42The captain says to the Indian Air Traffic Control that please tell the Pakistanis to give us permission to land because the hijackers are getting frustrated here.
02:51The hijackers are threatening to start killing passengers if we are not allowed to land in Pakistan
02:56At exactly 6:30 in the evening, the Indian High Commission in Pakistan requests Pakistan to allow the plane to land in Lahore but permission is still not given.
03:05Meanwhile, Captain Devi Sharan sitting in the plane hijabs that there is very little fuel left in the plane and we cannot wait here and will have to get their permission to land somewhere to convince the hijacker to refuel the plane.
03:35had hijacked an Indian plane and its landing in India would mean that the Indian government and authorities would have a huge upper hand
03:43Such a crisis situation has many advantages for India.
03:47Indian forces can now probably bring the situation under control very easily because the plane is going to land in India.
03:53But what happens next is a historic blunder
03:57Subramanian Swamy describes this incident as the worst capitulation to terrorists in our modern history.
04:04So what kind of mistake do the Indian authorities make? There is not just one mistake but many.
04:097.01 p.m. The flight lands at Amritsar airport and immediately a request is made to refuel the flight
04:17The amazing thing is that Punjab's Director General of Police Sarabjit Singh got to know about this hijacking only one hour in advance at 6 o'clock.
04:26And that too not through other officials but through TV news
04:30Can you imagine how big a communication failure there was here that such an important person was informed
04:34The news of this hijacking is seen by watching TV
04:38After the hijacking, a crisis management group is formed
04:41For this a local committee is formed whose purpose is to delay the plane as much as possible
04:47Doing so will give the commandos more time to develop a strategy and conduct some operations on the ground
04:54But the hijackers sitting in the plane refuse to communicate with local police officials.
05:00He was only trying to communicate with the officials sitting in Delhi and this communication was not yielding any result.
05:06Captain Devi Sharan once again requests to please refuel the plane.
05:11If refueling is not done, threats are being given by the Natwadis here that they will start attacking people
05:17they will start killing passengers
05:19five minutes pass
05:21ten minutes
05:22fifteen minutes
05:23No refueling is done
05:24The hijackers actually attack a man
05:28Satnam Singh
05:30A knife hurts him badly on his neck
05:33Once again Captain Devi Sharan requests that
05:36The plane should be refueled as quickly as possible
05:38Meanwhile 40 minutes pass by
05:417.45 pm
05:42Crisis Management Group makes a plan and gives orders to Punjab Police
05:47Why not think about it while we are fueling up Uplane
05:50We should hide some Punjab police officers in that fuel tanker
05:54And he goes secretly
05:55puncture the plane's tyres
05:57If the tyre is punctured then the plane will not be able to take off in the air again
06:00This is a great plan but before putting this plan into action
06:03ATC has another plan
06:05Why don't we take a fuel tanker and park it in front of the plane
06:08to block his way
06:09So a fuel tanker starts moving towards the plane
06:12But the driver of the fuel tanker started driving a little fast.
06:16So the ATC people thought that if we go this fast
06:19Many hijackers might not think that something wrong is going on here
06:22So the driver is told, brother, drive the car a bit slowly
06:25And the driver, call it miscommunication or something else, suddenly stops the fuel tanker
06:31The hijackers and the captain who were sitting in the cockpit of the plane
06:35They see this thing happening and looking at the hijackers they wonder what is going on
06:39At first this vehicle was coming towards us at a very high speed and then it suddenly stopped
06:43There is something going on here, they are trying to play some game and the hijackers are frustrated
06:48They said that the plane would be taken back into the air without refueling.
06:53Captain Sharon is immediately pressurized to get the plane back into the air
06:58And this fuel tanker standing in front of the plane, ignore it, it would have hit you, do whatever you want to do to fly the plane in the air again.
07:04Under pressure, Captain Sharon again prepares the plane for take off
07:08While speeding on the runway, he narrowly escapes hitting a fuel tanker that was in front of the plane
07:12An accident could have almost happened here, but it doesn't happen and the plane takes off into the air in one go
07:18This happens exactly at 7.49 beam, the same time when the NSG commandos reach the airport
07:26The operation completely backfires; the NSG commandos do not get any chance to take action.
07:33And the most important thing is that the plane still has no fuel.
07:37During take off, captain Davy Sharon sends a message to ATC: we are all dying, we are all going to die
07:44Lahore is only 50 km away from Amritsar and this flight turns towards Pakistan once again
07:50Once again Pakistan's air traffic control denies permission, we will not let this plane land in Pakistan
07:57They were worried that the hijackers would pressurize the pilot and force him to land at Lahore airport.
08:03So actually all the lights are turned off at the airport in Pakistan.
08:08Whatever navigational aids and lights were present at the airport, they were all turned off
08:12So that even if you want to land the plane, it becomes very difficult to do so without light
08:16But there is so much pressure on Captain Sharon from the hijackers that they say that it does not matter to us whether the runway is visible here or not, we have to land the plane, land it anywhere.
08:26So the flight slowly comes down and suddenly Captain Sharon realizes that he is going to crash land on a highway.
08:34Seeing this, they make a final request to Pakistan's air traffic control that they will crash land us on a highway if they don't allow us to land at our own airport.
08:44Hearing this, finally the air traffic control agrees to Lahar airport and the plane lands in Lahar with eight minutes to spare.
08:53India tells Pakistan airport officials to please not allow this plane to fly again
08:59India's plan was to send Indian High Commissioner G Partha Sarthi based in Islamabad to negotiate with the hijackers.
09:08Here at this airport in Pakistan the plane is finally refueled
09:13And to prevent the plane from taking off again, the lights are switched off again and the commandos surround the plane.
09:20Apparently attempts are also made by Pakistani forces to negotiate with the hijackers
09:25They say that the children should also be released but these negotiations fail.
09:30The hijackers are frustrated that their negotiations are not leading to any solution
09:35Their demands are not being fulfilled yet
09:38Another passenger is attacked
09:40Rupin Katyal
09:4125 year old man from Gurgaon who was returning from honeymoon with his wife
09:46Later on Rupin also gets his due
09:49Pakistan had work here
09:56Providing a helicopter to the Indian High Commissioner so that he can reach here as quickly as possible for negotiation
10:01But that helicopter is provided three hours late
10:05By the time they reach Lahore
10:07It appears that the plane has taken off again
10:10How was this possible when all the lights at the airport were switched off?
10:14Commandos had surrounded the entire plane, yet how did the plane take off?
10:18There is not much information available about this
10:21But some clues are definitely found in the further story
10:24The flight is now diverted from Lahore to Oman
10:26But there too I get rejection
10:28I don't get permission to land
10:30The next landing of this flight is
10:32At Al Minhad Air Base in Dubai
10:35around three o'clock at night
10:37After tough negotiations here
10:39Finally the hijackers release 26 passengers
10:43A special relief aircraft of Indian Airlines is called
10:46in Dubai and they are taking these passengers
10:49leaves and comes back to India
10:51Sharad Yadav, the civil aviation minister of that time
10:53were present in this flight and
10:55until the passengers are taken back home
10:58were accompanying
10:59These are the passengers who had returned from Dubai
11:01With their help, very important information
11:04The story goes on about this hijacked flight
11:06It is said that inside the plane
11:08to the men and and and and the children
11:10has been kept segregated
11:12And everyone is wearing a blindfold
11:13Everybody's eyes are blindfolded
11:15so that anyone can see
11:17Some women claimed that hijackers
11:19were actually behaving decently
11:21He was quite affectionate towards her and the children
11:23It is told by them that
11:25There were 5 hijackers who had stolen their
11:27had different names
11:29Their biggest leader who considers himself
11:31I used to call him chief and apart from that
11:33The four that remain are burgers, doctor.
11:35Shankar and said
11:37These were fake names they were using
11:39But their real names at the time of hijacking
11:41we'll find out later
11:43Ibrahim Akhtar, Shahid Akhtar Saeed
11:45Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor
11:47Mistry and Sakir
11:49Most of the hijackers were from Pakistan itself
11:52Both captain and hostages tell later
11:54About Hijacker Burger
11:56that he won the hearts of the people
11:57On the flight, by singing songs, by telling jokes
12:00and talking to them
12:02It is quite shocking that some hijackers
12:04were behaving in this manner
12:06Because such a story was also coming from the other side
12:08that food was not being provided properly
12:10A woman says her baby was crying
12:12the hijacker screamed out of hunger
12:14that shut it up
12:15one day goes by
12:17The passengers who are still inside the plane
12:19Things are getting worse for them
12:21there is acute shortage of food and water
12:24The toilets are in a bad condition
12:25the plane takes off again
12:28And this time it goes to Afghanistan
12:3126 December at 8 am
12:33The plane lands at Kandahar International Airport
12:36And present here after landing
12:49But India wants to defeat this Taliban government
12:52did not recognize
12:54So India with its Islamabad
12:55Sends an official of the High Commission to Kandahar
12:58to negotiate
12:59People sitting in the plane for the next 6 days
13:02live right here
13:036 days even after all this
13:06They remain locked there for 6 days
13:08They have no idea what is going to happen next
13:11what is their future
13:12Will they be killed here?
13:13Doubts begin to arise about the real intentions of the Taliban
13:16to the Indian Government
13:17Because this plane has been surrounded from all sides
13:36This has been done so that India can do the same from its side
13:38They could not carry out military operations
13:40against hijackers
13:41Ajit Doval who was part of a special team at that time
13:44who is sent to Kandahar
13:46To negotiate with a terrorist
13:48They say that to hijackers
13:50Support was being received from active ISI in Kandahar
13:53They were being guaranteed
13:54that they will get a safe exit
13:56He said that if ISI was not involved here
13:59Then India would have been able to resolve this hijacking
14:01This is from the year 1999
14:04The same year when the Kargil war took place
14:06Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee also tried
14:09To establish peaceful relations with Pakistan
14:12But he is failing
14:13And this hijack was a very sensitive issue
14:16Regarding the image of the Prime Minister
14:17Many things are not completely clear till now
14:20About this case
14:21To this day we don’t know
14:23How did the security breach happen at Katmandu airport?
14:26It is said that
14:27Dawood Ibrahim's Nepal network was used
14:30of the Indian Authorities
14:31There is also a theory about mishandling
14:33It is explained which I will discuss further in the video
14:35Now go back to your timeline
14:37So the hijackers in Kandahar state their demands
14:40200 million dollars
14:42That means 1650 crore rupees should be given to them.
14:46And they also demand the release of 36 prisoners.
14:50Apart from this, they also demand the dead body of Sajjad Afghani, the founder of Harkat Ul Mujahideen
14:56This demand was very outrageous
14:58that so many things are being demanded
15:00So much money is being asked for
15:01But in India a different kind of pressure was being exerted on the government
15:06Regarding this hijacking on 26 December
15:08External Affairs Minister Jaswan Singh was giving a press conference
15:12Suddenly a crowd of people enters this press conference
15:22These people were family members and relatives of the passengers sitting in that plane
15:27He enters a press conference and says this in front of the External Affairs Minister
15:31Fulfill the demands of the hijackers
15:33We want our families to be safe
15:36He gives reference of December 1989
15:42Ten years ago when Union Minister Mufti Mohmat Saith's daughter
15:46The government had released militants to free Ruwaya Saith
15:50You stress the importance of civilians' lives and make demands from the government
15:54Take action as soon as possible and bring our family members back safely to the country
15:59He believed that the safety of the passengers sitting in the plane is the number one priority
16:03Their safety comes above anything else.
16:06Whether they demand the release of a prisoner or demand money, all these are of second priority.
16:11And all this was happening in front of the then external affairs minister Jaswan Singh.
16:15But Indian negotiators had not yet reached Kandahar
16:19They arrive the next day on 27 December
16:22This team of negotiators was being led by Vivek Kaatju
16:26Who was the joint secretary in the ministry of home affairs at that time
16:29and home ministry official Ajit Doval
16:31And with each passing day the pressure on the government increases more and more
16:34When the relatives of some hostages crash the gate
16:37Rajiv Gandhi in Bhavna
16:38Where the meeting of the crisis management group was about to take place
16:41Some people protest in front of the Prime Minister's house
16:45The Taliban clearly denies
16:47that he can help the Indian forces in some rescue operation
16:49will not let me conduct
16:50But he definitely says that we are on your behalf
16:53we will negotiate
16:54And the negotiations proceed in this manner
16:57Taliban leader Maulana Muhammad Omar
16:59tells Pakistani newspaper
17:01that the hijackers should either leave the plane
17:04you must put down your weapons
17:06Tough negotiations happen here for several days.
17:08The team of Indian negotiators is here
17:10There is Taliban in the middle and there are hijackers on the other side
17:13Ultimately what the hijackers demand
17:16it is narrowed down considerably
17:18Only the eyes of 36 prisoners
17:20Three prisoners will be released
17:22To reduce the demand for hijackers
17:24credit Here Indian negotiators and
17:26Taliban is given to both
17:27If we return to hijacking, then by the fifth day
17:29The toilets started overflowing in the plane
17:32People were losing their hope
17:33The then RAW chief AS Dulut
17:36We reach Jammu on 30th December
17:39Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had to be convinced
17:42let's try and kill the two prisoners that are here
17:45release them
17:46Farooq Abdullah was very reluctant
17:48They argue that this can be done later
17:51can have a very negative impact
17:52which we saw today he also reads
17:55But eventually the pressure was so much at that time
17:58that they are forced to listen to it
18:00These prisoners are taken to Delhi
18:02And External Affairs Minister
18:04By boarding a flight with Jaswan Singh
18:06is sent to Kandahar
18:08The next day was December 21st.
18:10This demand of the hijackers is heard
18:13and three prisoners
18:14It is released in Kandahar
18:17hijackers from the other side too
18:19to the passengers sitting in the plane
18:21we release it
18:22At this point of time Indian team had expected
18:24that the hijackers will be overrested
18:26By Taliban
18:27But he doesn’t do that
18:29The supreme leader of the Taliban with another Taliban member
18:32to hijackers and those who are release terrorists
18:35put them in the car
18:36heads towards the border
18:38towards Pakistan border
18:39It had become very clear at this point of time
18:41For India, how is Pakistan
18:44was involved in this hijacking
18:45Harkat was a Pakistan-based militant group
18:58who was active in P.O.K.
18:59And 33 out of 36 prisoners whose release was demanded
19:03He himself was a Pakistani
19:04These hijackers crossed the border safely
19:07escape to Pakistan
19:09On the other hand, passengers' lives are saved
19:11Many passengers are injured
19:13I am hurt and more
19:15very badly hungry
19:17They return back home on 31 December
19:21This plane that was hijacked
19:22It was retired in the year 2001
19:25Because this and this is a 20 year old plane
19:27blame for this whole incident
19:29obviously goes to hijackers
19:30And on the stakeholders that support them
19:33Be it Taliban or Pakistani forces
19:35but at the same time as
19:37which was the government at that time
19:39Fingers are pointed at him too
19:41How he failed miserably
19:43to deal with this crisis
19:44plane when amriz was present in sir
19:46Then the Indian forces had a golden opportunity
19:49to take back control of the plane
19:51But the big blunders that happened on the part of the government
19:53They can be named as communication gap.
19:57But the result of these blunders was this
19:59That later Jaish-e-Mohammed group was created
20:02And we got to see all these other attacks
20:04Another big revelation has been made regarding the controversy of Amarjeet Sir
20:10The chief of that time tells us how
20:13From among the passengers sitting in the plane
20:14there was a passenger
20:16Sashi Bhushan Singh Tomar
20:18Who was brother-in-law of N.K. Singh
20:21And N.K. Singh was the secretary of Prime Minister Watchpai
20:24It is said that the plane was hit by Amarij Sir.
20:26allowed to take off
20:28To ensure Tomar's safety
20:30If this is a decision about Tomar's safety
20:32plays a small part too
20:34in Amraj sir's lost chance
20:35So it was a very shameful act
20:38This is from the authorities
20:39The second shocking thing was that many
20:41For hijacking the top leaders in the country
20:43The incident is known
20:45not through news but through your communication
20:47Not from channels like L.K.
20:49Advani who was the home minister at that time
20:51Explains how they
20:53came to know about this incident
20:55through the news
20:56not from crisis management group
20:58There is definitely good news in hearing this story.
21:00And that is, from then until today
21:02No other hijacking incident has happened in the country
21:06rules and processes are now so strict
21:08They have been made to hijack any plane
21:11it has become very very difficult
21:12Are these safety measures ever used by anyone else?
21:15We will discuss them in detail in the video.
