00:01Hello, everybody, and welcome to a special notebook.
00:03Well, it's a feature, actually, on how to make a life-size F1 car out of Lego bricks.
00:08Come on, little Ted.
00:10Last year, Formula One and the Lego Group announced their new partnership for 2025
00:14with a wild idea planned.
00:16Build all 10 F1 team cars out of these tiny colored bricks
00:20and make them fully drivable at this weekend's Miami Grand Prix.
00:25And to see exactly how that's done,
00:26I was invited to the factory where they're building these cars,
00:29in Kladno, the Czech Republic,
00:31to see how a brilliant plan like this actually comes to life.
00:34As a kid, like many children, I used to make pretty basic stuff
00:37out of these little colorful plastic bricks,
00:39helicopters, planes, that kind of thing.
00:41But this is on another level.
00:4410 teams, 10 cars, and such detail.
00:48So we're used to making vehicles,
00:51drivable vehicles out of Lego bricks.
00:53This one was really challenging because it involved 10 cars.
00:55So that was a great challenge,
00:57conceptualizing, designing, and building these cars took about 22,000 hours.
01:02I think we handle it well.
01:04And over 400,000 colored bricks,
01:06which are made in Lego factories around the world.
01:09They start as melted plastic pellets.
01:11They're injected into molds.
01:12Once they've cooled, they're trimmed, tested, boxed up,
01:16and sent off to factories like this one for big build projects.
01:19We get the bricks delivered to the factory,
01:21and the builders assemble them here on the table,
01:23put them together here.
01:25This is the design that comes from our department,
01:28the design department,
01:29and they go layer by layer,
01:31layering bricks one layer on top of each other.
01:34It's like when you're building a house.
01:36To achieve a real sturdiness,
01:37every brick is glued to the other one.
01:40You don't want the bricks to come apart for sure.
01:43If we start this project,
01:46you need some steel structure inside
01:48because you need the rigid model.
01:50And so you just pick up all of these things,
01:52a rear wing or a bodywork or an engine cover,
01:54and it just slots on to here, is that right?
01:57You move with the crane or the hand
01:59and move on these the screws.
02:02Nice bit of kit.
02:03And tell us about actually
02:04how you're going to sit the drivers down in the cockpit.
02:06This is movable.
02:07So you need to cater for Yuki Tsunoda
02:10and then Ollie Behrman at the same time.
02:12Yeah.
02:12You've thought of everything, Martin.
02:14Brilliant.
02:14If we want to drive,
02:15we need some electro-engine.
02:18And this electro-engine will be here.
02:21This electro-engine will be in one box
02:24with the differential and with gearbox.
02:27You had to work quickly or...?
02:29Time was our enemy.
02:301,000 kilos Lego bricks.
02:32So fast forward a few thousand work hours
02:35and it's time to see these big builds come to life.
02:42Oh, wow.
02:43Well, here they are, two of them absolutely ready.
02:46A Mercedes and a Ferrari.
02:48They look fantastic.
02:49Actually, they look about the right size,
02:51even though they've got two drivers.
02:52And the attention to detail is just brilliant.
02:55Look at the wheel covers here, the front wing.
02:57The colors are perfect.
02:58The Ferrari.
02:59This looks fantastic.
03:01How they've managed to fashion curved surfaces
03:04out of square plastic bricks is incredible.
03:06All the sponsors' logos are spot-on.
03:09Oh, strong, too.
03:10Love it.
03:11Now, these do actually go.
03:12So I wonder if I could take it for a cheeky spin.
03:16All right.
03:17And we're off.
03:19That's a bit quieter than a normal F1 car.
03:21Whoo-hoo-hoo.
03:23Whoa-hey.
03:25Look, Mum.
03:26I'm driving a Lego car.
03:28Ah, Lewis is going to love this.
03:30And stop.
03:32Well, that was tremendous.
03:34Next stop, Miami, where it's lights out and away Lego.
03:37Ooh, I wondered if you'd managed to get that one in.
03:42Lego Wacky Races update.
03:45And judging by the looks on some of these drivers' faces,
03:49there are a few that have regressed.
03:50Some by 10 years.
03:53Others by 30 or so.
03:54But I'm glad they've glued those together.
03:58I hope they've glued them together well.
04:00Otherwise, there's going to be a fair few thousand Lego bricks
04:03on that greasy track.
04:05Right, let's see what Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen
04:08made of their fun out there.
04:11That was the most fun drivers parade we've ever had.
04:15Some dirty driving from this one here.
04:17They're stealing the wall.
04:18Yeah.
04:19The dirty boys are stealing the wall back there.
04:21That was very fun.
04:22Yeah, I do think they have to sweep the track.
04:24There's quite a bit of Lego debris now on the track.
04:27A few cars collided along the way.
04:30But, yeah, it's a bit different.
04:32That's for sure.
04:32It must have been a bit fun to go up kind of wheel-to-wheel as well.
04:35Yeah, ours was a bit slow on top speed.
04:37So we slowly dropped back throughout the lap.
04:39But, yeah, I think it's more important
04:42to actually clean the track at the moment.
04:46There you go.
04:47I knew it.
04:47I knew this was going to happen.
04:49You give them anything and they'll race it.
04:51I think Ant's been at the sky.
04:52Ant, you were keeping an eye on what was going out on track.
04:55Was it getting dirty out there?
04:57Yeah, I am at the sky.
04:58I think this is a hit, so I'm definitely worthy of a sky pad.
05:01And I saw this was the moment where it all started going wrong, really, wasn't it?
05:04When George Russell took to the inside of Turn 3, surprising Charles Leclerc,
05:09who was being a good boy up until that moment.
05:12And then, obviously, down towards Turn 17, this is when it really started kicking off,
05:15where you had a sandwich with Pierre Gasly, good friends of Charles Leclerc,
05:19and George Russell in the middle and making contact.
05:22And that's when I thought, oh, dear, look.
05:24This is why we have a rule book in Formula 1,
05:27because without it, stuff like this would happen.
05:31Very good fun.
05:32Definitely worthy of a sky pad here.
05:34Well done, everyone.
05:34Lego Formula 1 to bring smiles onto the F1 drivers' faces.
05:38And ours, too.
