00:00A capacity grid, a stalled car, a racing driver's worst nightmare.
00:25I was worried about someone hitting him from behind, it's probably your worst fear in that
00:29situation.
00:30When the fire lit up, then I just had to change the plans and get out of there the best that
00:38I could.
00:39I knew if the fumes got in my lungs, I'd have no chance.
00:42I really had to just get out of the car.
00:49Paul Morris and Mark Larkin, miraculous survivors of one of V8 Supercar Racing's most horrific
00:55moments.
00:56Orrin Park's round nine of the Shell series three weeks ago was V8 Supercar Racing on
01:06steroids.
01:07Nose to tail, door to door and a top six reverse grid which provided light relief from another
01:17HRT winning score.
01:18Russell Ingle moves back into the winner's circle and it's a welcome return too.
01:22640 points still up for grabs, 16 drivers still in with a crack at the title.
01:28The countdown has begun as we welcome you to Melbourne's wild and windy cold apart.
01:33Round 10 of the 2000 Shell Championship Series, exclusive to your home of must-see motorsport.

02:04Boulder Park, a track with more than three decades of motor racing history, but these
02:13days it's probably best remembered as the place where Craig Lowndes had that massive
02:18rollover last season.
02:19Hello, I'm Greg Rust.
02:20Welcome to our coverage of Round 10 of the Shell Championship Series.
02:24Well, one big roll or one big crash a year is simply one too many, and despite that massive
02:28shunt at Oran Park only a few weeks ago, both Mark Larkham and Paul Morris are here and
02:33competing, which is quite remarkable.
02:35Morris is still feeling a little pain in his lower back, but he's pressing on in the car
02:38that Garth Tander campaigned last season.
02:40Mark Larkham, Adam Perry and all the boys at Mitre 10 Racing, we really should congratulate
02:44them.
02:45They have done a marvellous job building a brand new car for Larko from a bare shell.
02:49Three months' work, rammed into three weeks, and the new machine is performing like a jet.
02:53We'll talk more about that during the course of qualifying.
02:55Well, after nine rounds of the championship, the point score looks like this.
02:58Mark Scape on top with 1,035 points.
03:01It's 36 clear, in fact, of Glenn Seton.
03:03Our early season leader, Garth Tander, is on the comeback trail, 37 points behind Seton.
03:08And last year's runner-up, Russell Ingle, is eight there, and within striking distance,
03:11in fact, of Tony Longhurst.
03:12Only a slender margin separating Larry Perkins and John Bauer, and Craig Baird, who's been
03:17having a tough season by his standards, is 16th in the Perth Tech board.
03:21Well, Paul Morris, since that big accident at Oran Park, has made some pretty strong calls
03:25for improved safety standards to prevent accidents like that happening once again.
03:28And the man who's got all the answers to that is our resident technical guru.
03:31Good afternoon, Barry Shee.
03:32I wouldn't bang on it.
03:33Yeah, what they've done, basically, they're going to do the same as they do in the Formula
03:36One.
03:37In the Formula One thing, every row of the grid, they have a pit marshal down on the pit
03:42lane with a yellow flag.
03:43So, say, for example, on the second row of the grid, there's an accident.
03:47From the second row of the grid backwards, the guy holds up a yellow flag and waves a yellow
03:51flag.
03:52So, somebody at the back of the grid, for example, they wouldn't see what's going on
03:56on the second row of the grid.
03:57So, you can see the flags being waved, and, you know, they've got some idea there's trouble
04:01happening.
04:02But having said that, in a situation like with Mark Larkham, I don't think it would save
04:06anything.
04:06Because in Larkham's position, he was behind Ellery, he saw Ellery move a little bit, and
04:11he just pulled out, and he was confronted with Paul Morris.
04:14So, it's a hard thing to stop, you know.
04:16So, just do your best to make it as safe as possible.
04:19Well, I know it's a line we've used very often in our coverage of the V8 Supercar Championship,
04:22but things really are close in this series, and it was no more intense than yesterday's
04:26qualifying session.
04:27As you take a look at the top ten, you can see that things are very close, indeed.
04:31They're the narrowest of margins separating them.
04:33Craig Lowndes on pole, a sensational time of 55.912.
04:37Larry Perkins, who was actually relegated to the bottom 50% of qualifying, rocketed up the
04:41order to second.
04:42Russell Ingle third, so both the Castro boys certainly looking good.
04:44And there's Mark Larkham in that brand new car, bit faster, so a sensational performance
04:49from him.
04:49Let's go to Marko's luck.
04:52You know, one of the biggest criticisms of the AU Falcon V8 Supercar has been the inconsistency
04:57of its chassis performance.
04:59It's always had a smaller front undertray than the VT Commodore, so naturally it's always
05:02had less downforce than the Holden as well.
05:05Well, due to an amazing amount of cooperation between Ford, Holden, and the Touring Car Entrance
05:09Group of Australia, or TIGA as they're known, this weekend, the AU Falcons for the first
05:14time have the same amount of downforce as the VT Commodore, and it's because of this.
05:17This is the new front spoiler.
05:19It's called the TIGA Bumper.
05:21And effectively, it's AU Falcon from this point up, but from this point down, it's basically
05:25the VT Commodore adapted to it.
05:27So for the first time, we've got equal downforce on the Falcons and the Commodores.
05:31Now, Paul Radisic, you're the fastest Ford here this weekend.
05:33Very fast in qualifying yesterday.
05:35Does the car feel any different with this new front end?
05:37Well, firstly, we're very pleased to be on the second row of the grid.
05:41It's been a little while since we've been right up there, but, you know, all in all,
05:44the bumper bar has helped balance the car out a little bit through the slow and medium
05:48corners.
05:49It's still early days because Calder is not a track that is all about aerodynamics.
05:53So, you know, I have to say it has made the car a little bit balanced, and we'll sort of
05:59reserve judgment until we get to Sandown and perhaps Willowbank.
06:03Great qualifying performance starting off the second row.
06:05And you do a lot with that today.
06:07We can do a lot of damage from there, and, you know, it's a great spot to be in.
06:12If we make a great start, then I think we're in there.
06:14We're right in the money end.
06:16All the best.
06:16Thanks, mate.
06:18Here is the Calder Park layout to the northwest of the Melbourne CBD, typified by that long
06:22main straight, 2.2 k's in length.
06:25But don't take my word for it.
06:26To give you the inside line around Calder Park Raceway, here's Neil Crompton.
06:35Welcome to the ultimate backseat driver's ride around Calder.
06:40Eight turns, 2.3 kilometres, and one of the longest straights in the business.
06:44Heading into the braking area at turn one, at speed, coming in at around about 260 k's.
06:51Pretty bumpy little place.
06:52Turn one is bumpy right in the middle, and then it's very easy to end up with a lot of
06:56oversteer on exit as you get up against the ripple strip.
06:58Short squeeze of the throttle for the sequence at 2.3, and then over Bob's Hill, the artificial
07:04hill that takes you onto the back straight.
07:05The cars leap off the ground.
07:07You're going to hear the rear of the car screaming under protest as 600 horsepower goes berserk.
07:12Fifth gear up the back straight, and then at about the 150 metre mark, as hard on the
07:16peaks as you dare squeeze, and back to second gear.
07:19Very bumpy right in the middle.
07:21Short stab of the throttle.
07:22Hard left.
07:23Another short stab of the throttle.
07:25All the lights come up on the dash as you just bring the limiter on before you go through
07:29turn eight.
07:30The last corner with another big jump in the middle.
07:32Up to third gear.
07:33Use all the road on the exit.
07:35Fourth.
07:37Fifth.
07:41And sixth.
07:42And you look at the number at the end, and it's better not to, because you'll get right.
07:46That's a lap of Calder.
07:48It certainly is very scary, isn't it?
07:50Last season, Calder Park was a cauldron of carnage.
07:53Stick with us after the break to find out what happens in race one.
07:55Oh, what a great shot.
08:25It's a place that has certainly produced some mighty moments in recent years, and let's
08:54hope that there's nothing else added to those chapters today.
08:57Let's take a look at the group for you for race one.
08:59Craig Lowndes on pole.
09:01A sensational time.
09:02It's around about 0.5 of a second outside the qualifying cup record set last year by
09:07Jason Bright.
09:08Larry Perkins.
09:08What about that?
09:09The first time he's been on the front row since Malala, 1997.
09:12His teammate Russell Ingle and Paul Radisic on road two.
09:15Markham and Scape.
09:16Road three.
09:16Seaton and Richards on road four.
09:18Yeah, Mark Scape.
09:19A little bit further back than he'd like to be, but he got bonkly traffic yesterday.
09:23Didn't get a clean run.
09:24Tony Longhurst and Garth Tander.
09:25Longhurst has been quick throughout qualifying.
09:27Stephen Ellery.
09:28Good effort too in the super cheap car.
09:29Moving up through the pack.
09:30Greg Murphy in the brand new Kmart Commodore.
09:33Neil Crompton and Todd Kelly start out behind them.
09:36Jason Bargwana not having the best of weekends in terms of set up with the Valvoline Cummins
09:40Commodore.
09:40He lines up the side.
09:41Rodney Forbes.
09:42Paul Morris is back in the VS Commodore that Garth Tander campaigned last season.
09:46Steve Johnson.
09:47Then it's Baird and McLean.
09:48Paul Wheel and Brad Jones on row 12.
09:51Cameron McConville in the Retco Commodore.
09:53And Dougal McDougal alongside the Pepsi machine.
09:55Steve Reid and Mick Donahue start out of row 14.
09:58Rick Bates having another run on the Calliskan Ford.
10:00And Trevor Ashby alongside in the Landsvale Commodore.
10:02Rod Nash and Paul Romano out of 32.
10:05And there is the back of the grid.
10:07Huge field here at Calder Park.
10:08Alan Heath, Anthony Tratt and Mike Imrie making his return as well after that crash in Queensland.
10:14Well we've seen plenty of action and excitement at Calder Park over the years.
10:17It's a fairly simple non-technical circuit but boy doesn't it create some action.
10:21Let's have a look through the in-car cameras that'll have all our action covered for you today.
10:25Brad Jones, the Alfie Male Racing Falcon.
10:28Views covered from a number of different angles here.
10:31Glenn Seaton, the man suffering.
10:33He's got the cold or a dose of the flu.
10:35He's not feeling well.
10:37He's been struggling all week.
10:38We saw him actually having a coughing fit inside the car during qualifying yesterday.
10:41So he is not in good shape.
10:43His teammate Neil Crompton is struggling as well.
10:45He says he's picked it up.
10:46And here is the big clear and simple on-board cam with John Bough who's also been struggling
10:51with set up this weekend in the Caterpillar Ford.
10:54So we'll keep an eye on his progress.
10:55And Paul Radisic, the Shell Helix on-board camera as you ride with the rat, the best of
11:00the Ford campaigners, and on the second row of the grip for this race.
11:04He said, I think his words were, I can do plenty of damage from here.
11:06Look at the intensity in the face of Mark Larkham and the Mitre 10 in-car camera.
11:11The man who survived that fiery crash at Oran Park only three weeks ago.
11:14His team have done an absolutely amazing job to get that car, new car built in time.
11:20They've turned it around very quickly.
11:21And pole position, of course, the walker in-car camera with Craig Lowndes, a reigning Shell
11:25Series champion.
11:26A fabulous view from the back seat of the HRT Commodore.
11:30So we've got everything covered here as the action is about to explode.
11:33The first corner is really going to be interesting.
11:35When you've got England Radisic together, it's two hard charges, so it should be really
11:42good.
11:42Check out the forward race analysis, 35 starters on the grid, 21 laps the distance for each
11:46of the heats, which run under about 50 Ks.
11:48And look at that, the first, 25th position on the grid, covered by a second.
11:52That must be some sort of a record.
11:53And last year's winner, Markscape, sitting a little bit further back in the pack than
11:56he'd like today.
11:57A real mixture of youth and experience on the front row there.
12:00Craig Lowndes and Larry Perkins, who will get the jump?
12:03There's Road 2, the Enforcer and the Rats, side by side.
12:08Mark Larkham, our championship leader, Markscape, on the third row.
12:10Look at that, Lowndes.
12:12Launches off the line.
12:13Paul Radisic, a brilliant start.
12:14So too Russell Engel.
12:15He gets around the boss as they work towards turn one for the first time.
12:19Yeah, Perkins made a bit of a muck up at the side.
12:21And what happened?
12:22It seemed to go and then slow right up.
12:24So it was a bit of a struggle.
12:25Engel on the inside there.
12:26Look at Radisic muscling on the outside of the shell.
12:28He got a fantastic start off the second row.
12:30He threatened to do that.
12:32He's on the outside of the pack now as they swing out of turn one.
12:34Engel gets himself up into second position and what a good start from Scaife.
12:38I think he's up into one of those two positions, third or fourth.
12:41I think it's fourth.
12:42No, he's in third.
12:45So he's leapfrog.
12:46Lowndes.
12:46Lowndes had a terrible start.
12:47Markscape has jumped from sixth to third in the space of half a lap.
12:52Cheers.
12:52They come through that flip-flop part of the circuit there.
12:55They're all tightly bunched up.
12:56Mark, look at it at the front.
12:57It's like a freight train.
12:58The man in front, Russell Engel, the enforcer from the rat.
13:01So the Shirley Helix race team on a charge here at the moment.
13:04The guys who are sitting on the second row of the grid for the commencement of this race
13:07have charged to the lead.
13:09Now look at Scaife having a look at Radisic already.
13:11He is really moving up through the field.
13:13Well, Scaife will be breathing a sigh of relief.
13:15He was very worried about sitting that far back in the pack.
13:17He doesn't get down there often.
13:19He didn't want to be involved in any argy-bargy in that opening lap.
13:21They've had a nice clean start.
13:23The two Holden Racing Team Commodores.
13:25Russell Engel, though, it's in command.
13:26Shame for Perkins.
13:28I don't know what he did off the grid, but he started to go.
13:31And then I thought something had broken, but it's hooked up in the end.
13:34So I don't know what happened there.
13:35Larkham's new minor 10 forward showing a few battle scars.
13:39He's dropped back a couple of positions as well.
13:41Larkham at the moment is in position eight.
13:43So he's dropped three spots from the start of this one in the brand new minor 10 forward.
13:49Ingle leads from Radisic.
13:50Mark Scaife, Lowndes, Perkins, Stephen Richards, Tander, Larkham, Ellery and Seton.
13:55They are the 10.
13:56Here is your leader.
13:58Well, that's...
13:58Sorry, Paul.
13:59As we've seen so many times in this Shell Championship, you get a good qualifying position.
14:05It's crucial to your championship hopes.
14:07And Paul Radisic had a great qualifying yesterday.
14:09And he's taken full advantage of that left off the second row.
14:12Now he finds himself in second position as the cars thunder down this main straight.
14:16Building up to speeds.
14:17260 kilometers an hour on the approach to Turn 1.
14:19Now they get hard on the brakes over the bumps down here.
14:22Cars get very, very unstable as they brake hard for Turn 1.
14:26Stephen Richards in a good position in the Kmart Commodore.
14:29Yeah, it's going to be interesting when Scaife really gets on the boil to see him try and get past Radisic and Ingle.
14:36You know, it's not an easy pair.
14:39They're really hard chargers.
14:40So I think we're going to see a bit of fireworks here.
14:42Another one to keep an eye on today is young Garb Tander.
14:45Seventh at the moment, Russell Ingle.
14:47Leading the way and the fastest man on the circuit at 57.155.
14:52So time's down on what we saw in qualifying yesterday.
14:55But to give you an idea, the temperature here in Melbourne today, air temperature is only 13 degrees.
14:59Track temperature is 14 degrees.
15:01So it really does take some time to get the heat generated right up through these Bridgestone tyres
15:04and get them working at their maximum.
15:06Here's the man working in the office, Paul Radisic, trying to hunt down our leader, Russell Ingle.
15:10Oh, not a lot in it and time speed, is there?
15:13You see, maybe just going in a little on Engel's thing.
15:17Critical thing here, Baz, is getting your power down effectively.
15:20Oh, Baz Baird.
15:21He's having a disastrous year, isn't he, really?
15:24Just terrible.
15:25Yeah, he goes right to the back of the pack, coming onto the main straight.
15:28The critical thing here is power down.
15:30This is not the technical circuit.
15:31It's very straightforward.
15:33Full throttle, brake turn, full throttle, brake turn.
15:35And the really critical thing here is set up is to be able to get maximum power to the ground from low speed.
15:40You're just launching out of low speed corners the whole time.
15:43What a lot of these drivers talk about is you can really punish the rear tyres as a result.
15:47Oh, a lock-up there from Radisic.
15:49In fact, one of the techniques a lot of the teams were employing yesterday in those cold conditions
15:52was to do one, maybe two laps in the early session of qualifying,
15:56then put the rear tyres onto the front because the Warriors had a lot of heat into them.
15:59And they have a lot of trouble getting heat into the front tyres in cold conditions.
16:02Oh, Radisic, look at this.
16:04That helped a lot of the competitors.
16:05Russell Engel, check it out on the Monroe driver profile.
16:09Has not had a good season.
16:11A terrible start to the Shell Championship season in 2000.
16:13He's currently eighth in the point standings with 607 points to Mark Scaife's 1,035.
16:19So he's well out of championship contention.
16:21But he has admitted that now, every round as they build up to Bathurst,
16:24it's going to be like a sorting session for Mount Panorama.
16:27Russell Engel, twice a runner-up in this championship season 2000, not the best of it.
16:32But here is a replay.
16:33Oh, that's an incident there, Baird and Stephen Johnson.
16:35Yeah, it looks like Baird hits Johnson up the bum, doesn't it, really?
16:38And that's what we saw before the aftermath when Baird rejoined the circuit.
16:44As I mentioned, Russell, 98 runner-up in the championship,
16:48and the same again in 99, not having the best of seasons.
16:52As Mark mentioned, the 2000 Shell Championship Series,
16:55he has been a winner on two occasions.
16:57Did it in the final race of the day at Eastern Creek.
17:00And the middle race, the reverse grid race at Oran Park just a couple of weeks ago.
17:04Stephen Richards in the Kmart, coming over at the back of this,
17:06leading, charged down the main straight.
17:09Russell Engel still in command from Paul Radisic.
17:11And it's the two Holden Racing Team Commodore escape.
17:15And Craig Lowndes, our pole.
17:16Oh, there's somebody to lock up there.
17:17I saw some smoke.
17:18I think it must have been escape.
17:19He locked up there.
17:21Now pole position man back and forth now.
17:22Kmart Commodore at 5th.
17:24Stephen Richards, 28-year-old,
17:28originally from Auckland and New Zealand now,
17:30places himself in Victoria.
17:33Oh, look at this.
17:34A little bit further back in the pack.
17:35This is Cameron McConville getting plenty of heat
17:37from McDonagh and Dougal McDougal up the inside of the Pepsi Commodore.
17:41You always see plenty of elbowing going on further back in the pack.
17:45As they come over the rise, down toward the back straight once again.
17:50If you've just joined us, this is race one,
17:53round 10 of the Shell Championship Series.
17:55Ingle leads.
17:56There he is from Paul Radisic.
17:57A Holden ahead of the fourth.
17:58Mark Scaife, our Championship Leader in third from defending champion Craig Lowndes.
18:03Then it's Richards.
18:04Tander who has climbed from 10th position at the start of this race up to 6th now.
18:08Then it's Larkham, Elleryx, Seton and Longhurst.
18:10Now, you may be wondering, in terms of qualifying,
18:13where Larry Perkins has ended up at the moment.
18:15He has dropped down through the field here.
18:17Didn't have the best of starts.
18:18And he is now outside the top 10.
18:20In fact, now in 12th position LP.
18:24This just goes to show, when you get stuck in this pack,
18:27how close and even the competition is.
18:29Particularly on the track by Corley.
18:30You saw the proof of the pudding after qualifying.
18:321 to 25 on the grid, covered by less than one second.
18:35Oh, Morris.
18:36The man of the moment, Paul Morris.
18:38He's still in some pain from that crash at Iron Park three weeks ago.
18:42The car suffering some pain here.
18:43A bit of battle damage on the front as he loops down pit lane.
18:45It's going to be interesting to see how the difference in the Ford and the Holden
18:51use the tyres when it gets towards the end of this race
18:55to see who's like around more, either Radisic or Engel.
19:00Talking to Stephen Ellery prior to the commencement of this race.
19:02Very happy with the way the super cheap auto Ford is coming along.
19:06He's currently in 8th position.
19:09And he's doing very well in terms of qualifying.
19:10He says the car's got a really nice balance to it.
19:12As we mentioned, well, Mark mentioned at the head of the show,
19:15the Fords are running this new Tiger front bumper.
19:18And the thing they're finding with it here at Calder is it tends to turn in a lot easier
19:21and much smoother to drive.
19:22And this is only early days, too.
19:24Look, these front spoiler sections were only delivered very late.
19:27So a lot of these Ford teams haven't had a chance to do some proper testing
19:30with this new front spoiler.
19:32And as they found out, you wouldn't think aerodynamics play a huge part in these cars,
19:35but it does.
19:36I mean, it really has transformed the response of the chassis,
19:39the consistency of it,
19:40and the balance that they can get in the car.
19:43So all the Ford teams that are running this new Tiger bumper,
19:47as you can see it there on Stephen Ellery's car,
19:48I'm very happy with the new device,
19:50and I'm sure it's going to improve as they get more testing time done.
19:53Lee clear and simple on board.
19:55We join John Bowe in 15th position.
19:57Ahead of him, Jason Barguana.
19:59A run onto the front straight.
20:00It's so crucial to get the power down there.
20:05I'm just looking at Tander's creeping up the back there.
20:09He's in six places, Ryan Richards.
20:11All right, we'll take it for a ride around Calder Park.
20:13Sit back and enjoy with John Bowe.
20:18Oh, something's great.
20:19Oh, no, what's happening there?
20:21Oh, it's like some sort of mechanical failure.
20:24What happened, Ross?
20:24Jammed in gear, jammed in gear.
20:33Jammed in gear.
20:34All right, bring it in.
20:35Now, this has happened before.
20:36Don't forget.
20:36Oran Park, the final race of the day.
20:38We've got a spin there.
20:39Bates and Rodney Forks possibly coming into contact.
20:42Now, I'm not sure what's going on with that.
20:44We've had a few funny sort of niggling problems
20:47with the Hollinger gearboxes this year,
20:48and particularly...
20:49So uncharacteristic.
20:50Yeah, Russell Engel.
20:51That's the second time he's had a jammed gearbox.
20:53It's very unlikely.
20:55These things are normally bulletproof,
20:56and this year, more than any season I can remember,
20:58we have had a number of gearbox problems.
21:01So Russell Engel, what a crushing blow to the Castrol team.
21:05The car jammed in gear.
21:06You can hear him talking to the team
21:08as he lifted back around the pit lane.
21:11Well, to finish first.
21:14First, you've got to finish.
21:15It's an old saying in motor racing
21:16that you cannot afford those things happening.
21:18Russell Engel will be very, very unhappy about that.
21:20Yeah, I thought it was very reserved.
21:22When he said what's happening, he said it's stuck in gear.
21:25Lap 10 of 21, and Paul Radisic leading the way,
21:28and maybe at this stage on course
21:30for his second race win of the season.
21:32There's the enforcer.
21:33What a shame.
21:34Very, very disappointing for him.
21:37Ford fans are cheering, though.
21:38You can hear them around the circuit yelling
21:40as Paul Radisic takes over the lead
21:42and the Shell 18 helix forward.
21:44Paul Radisic now ahead of Scaife,
21:46Lowndes, Richards and Tander.
21:47Here's pit lane.
21:49Russell Engel will be furious about that.
21:52He was looking in a commanding position,
21:55leading this one.
21:55But now that throws the door open to Paul Radisic.
21:59He's on a full attack now
22:00from the Holden Racing team duo.
22:02Mark Scaife in second.
22:03Craig Lowndes, our pole position man in third.
22:05Stephen Richards, though,
22:06excellent performance in the K-Mart Commodore.
22:09Same for four.
22:10This team are really starting to turn around
22:11their qualifying performances.
22:13Dismal last year,
22:14and they struggled early in this year.
22:16There was actually no contact there
22:21that I could see.
22:24Let's have a look.
22:26Another replay, Baz.
22:28Another incident.
22:30There's plenty of things going on
22:31around this circuit.
22:32Oh, I think you'll find out
22:34that guy was a little bit worried.
22:37The base, he was a bit worried.
22:38They were about to T-boating Forbes.
22:40He, I think, got on the brakes a bit
22:41and she just locked up and spun around.
22:44Radisic.
22:4657.35 his last time across.
22:49They thought they'd lap in the low 57s.
22:51He's doing that at the moment.
22:52Could the Rad be on course
22:53for his second win of the season
22:55and the fourth race victory for Ford?
22:57We will find out.
22:57At the moment, he leads from Scaife and Louds.
23:00Stephen Richards, a good job
23:01in the K-Mart Commodore in fourth.
23:03Then it's Garth Tander, Larkham.
23:05A return to racing
23:05and a great performance to sixth.
23:07And it's Ellery and Glenn Seaton
23:09currently in eighth position.
23:11Greg Murphy-Perkins has worked his way
23:12back up to tenth.
23:13And we'll be back with more.
23:14Stay with us right here
23:15at Calder Park.
23:21We are back at Calder Park.
23:24And Paul Radisic is leading the way
23:25in the Shell Helix Ford at the moment.
23:28And wouldn't the Dick Johnson racing team
23:29love it if this guy could
23:31take out the race at the moment?
23:32His team say he is lapping
23:34two tenths of a second quicker
23:36than our championship leader,
23:37Mark Scaife, who's in second place.
23:39Look at that great shot out the back
23:40of the Shell Helix Ford.
23:41He's got some daunting clouds
23:42off in the distance.
23:44Hopefully we won't see any rain
23:45here today.
23:46The Bureau overnight said
23:47it should be clear.
23:49Around about 14 degrees.
23:51And the Rat working away
23:51in the office.
23:52A bit surprised to see his teammates
23:53so far down in the order, though.
23:55Stephen Johnson's back
23:55in 18th at the moment.
23:57Right back in the pack.
23:59He's been struggling, though,
24:00hasn't he, all the way through
24:01practice and qualifying.
24:02He hasn't had a good time, Stephen.
24:04Super cheap autos team.
24:06Good consistent performance.
24:07They're sitting well inside
24:08the top ten.
24:09Seventh now for Stephen Ellery
24:10who's at the back
24:10of this leading pack.
24:11There he is
24:12in the super cheap autos car
24:13behind the minor 10 car.
24:15Look at the mirror of my car.
24:16So it's a brand new Falcon.
24:18First race.
24:19Being christened.
24:20Super cheap autos car.
24:21Yeah, interesting.
24:23I was saying that
24:23they're getting some more experienced
24:25team personnel on board now.
24:26Lee Geyer, former chief mechanic
24:29with Dick Johnson Racing,
24:30switched to that team
24:31earlier this year.
24:32And they're getting
24:33some more personnel on staff
24:34so that what they were doing
24:36when they didn't have enough people,
24:37they were spending so much time
24:38turning the car around
24:39between races,
24:39they really didn't have
24:40a lot of time to concentrate
24:41on set-up and work out strategy.
24:42But now that they're
24:43getting their team structure right,
24:44you're starting to see
24:45the results on the track.
24:46It's good effort from Stephen.
24:47Mark said that when they
24:50brought the new car out,
24:51they took it to Queensland Raceway
24:53and after about 10 laps
24:55the thing was right on the pace.
24:56You know, it was as quick
24:57as the other cars, right?
24:58That's amazing these days, isn't it?
25:00You know, all the computer set-up
25:01and all that kind of stuff
25:02where they can produce
25:03a car so equal.
25:04The thing that is so amazing
25:05about that, Baz,
25:06Mark Larkham's Mitre 10 team
25:08have basically spent
25:09the equivalent of 2,000 man hours.
25:12A team of eight blokes
25:13have been working
25:1312 to 15 hours a day
25:15to finish that car
25:16and get it right.
25:17And he's back at racing
25:18at the moment
25:18doing a terrific job.
25:19Stephen Ellery, though,
25:20who's spoken so many times, Mark,
25:21about his performances
25:22at Mount Panorama
25:23in recent years
25:23with Tony Longhurst
25:24and, of course,
25:25last year with Paul Radisic.
25:26And it's no wonder
25:27this team is starting
25:27to come on strong.
25:28Yeah, it's good to see.
25:29Stephen Richards
25:30is remaining fairly static
25:32at the top.
25:32Radisic
25:33just holding a little bit
25:34of a gap
25:35over Mark Scaife.
25:36Craig Lowndes in third.
25:37There's Richards.
25:38Tander.
25:39Tander's been able
25:40to turn things around.
25:41He was in all sorts
25:42of trouble in practice.
25:43They couldn't get
25:44the car working properly.
25:47All sorts of chassis
25:47imbalance problems.
25:49And plenty of rear grip
25:51but just couldn't get
25:51the front of the car
25:52to work properly.
25:54But they were third
25:54quickest in the warm-up
25:55this morning,
25:56so overnight
25:57they've done it again.
25:57This team's done
25:58their homework.
25:59They need to come up
26:00with a setup that's
26:00working much better
26:01on the Valvoline
26:02Cummins machine.
26:03They always do though,
26:03don't they?
26:04I mean,
26:04they always struggle
26:05in practice and qualifying.
26:08Oh, I didn't normally
26:09in practice
26:09they did a little bit
26:10better in qualifying
26:11and then they're much
26:11better in the race.
26:12You cast your mind
26:13back to the Queensland
26:14round of the championship.
26:15I think he qualified
26:16somewhere like 12th
26:17and by the end of the day
26:18he worked his way
26:18up to third.
26:19So that's exactly right,
26:20Baz.
26:20He does tend to do that.
26:21And Stephen Richards
26:22in front of him there
26:22in fourth at the moment
26:24in the Kmart Commodore.
26:25That's going particularly well.
26:26His teammate Greg Murphy
26:27is also inside the top 10
26:29in a brand new Commodore
26:30for that team.
26:31A car that both Steve
26:32and Greg will share
26:34the Queensland 500
26:35and a Bathurst
26:35and the thing the team
26:36are pleased about
26:37the most there
26:38is that both cars
26:39they now believe
26:39are from a chassis point
26:40of view set up
26:41very, very similarly
26:42so the drivers
26:42can give feedback
26:43and help work
26:44one another up the field.
26:45There it is.
26:46The beautiful
26:46Mitre 10 Ford
26:47battle damage
26:48from that opening lap
26:49and it always seems
26:50to happen to call the park.
26:52Passenger
26:53Miller is slapping
26:54in the breeze
26:54and look at that.
26:55Oh, they don't get
26:56much closer than that.
26:57We're talking to him
26:58in the lead up
26:59to this race
26:59and he says
27:00that right now
27:00he is in what they call
27:02Larco Land
27:03heading in towards
27:04the end of the championship.
27:05He loves all these circuits
27:06Queensland 500
27:07obviously Bathurst
27:08and he's looking
27:09for some really strong results
27:10in the Mitre 10 Ford
27:11as we take him
27:12for a ride around Calder.
27:20Yeah, it's up in the back
27:33of this circuit
27:34is very, very quick
27:35flat through the kink there
27:37it's all frequent.
27:39It's all frequent.
27:39It's all frequent.
27:39four laps remaining in this one.
28:05260 kilometres an hour.
28:07He saw it on the road speed there.
28:09You don't see
28:10with 600 odd horseback
28:12we're looking at that picture
28:14in the footwell
28:15you don't see him
28:16stamping the old
28:17right hand pedal
28:17with a big footwell
28:19do you?
28:20Now the interesting thing
28:20at the moment
28:21Mark Larkham
28:21is in the box seat
28:22to get a good run
28:23in Heat 2
28:24he's in sixth
28:24and don't forget
28:25they reversed
28:26the top six
28:27finishing positions
28:28from Heat 1
28:28so Larkham
28:29is now
28:29in pole position
28:31for Heat 2
28:32the start of Heat 2
28:33so if he stays in sixth
28:34that's going to be a good start
28:35for Mitre 10
28:36in Heat 2
28:36here's the one
28:37leading this one though
28:38Paul Radisic
28:40and he has every answer
28:41for the Holden Racing team
28:42at the moment
28:43actually that would be
28:44a really good front row
28:45of the grid
28:46when you think about it
28:46Mark
28:46that's going to be
28:47Larkham and Tander
28:48in the grid
28:49Tander in desperate
28:51need of points
28:51two is currently
28:52third
28:52in the championship
28:5437
28:54behind Glenn Seaton
28:56who is in second
28:56three laps remaining
28:57in this one
28:58Paul Radisic
28:59leading the way
29:00from Markscape
29:01Craig Lowndes
29:02in third
29:02as the field stream
29:04by there
29:04don't forget
29:05of course folks

29:52outstanding performance
29:53he can bring the

29:56tough season in 2000

29:59Stephen Johnson
30:01and of course
30:01the Dick Johnson

30:34tangles
30:34yeah it was
30:35down the end
30:35of the main
30:35straight
30:36he is so
30:39frustrated this year
30:40by the amount
30:41of panel damage
30:41and the number
30:42of times he has
30:43been innocently
30:43turned around
30:44I'm not sure
30:44if that was
30:44Kelly's fault
30:45in that instance
30:46but John Bauer
30:47has been caught
30:47up in so much
30:48carnage this year
30:49he's a pedal

31:55well
31:55there you go
31:56so he's actually
31:57struggled to the line
31:58there he's think
31:59there's some sort
31:59of problem
32:00with the differential
32:00maybe or the gearbox
32:01so that's a great
32:03result
32:03for Paul Radisic
32:04all things considered
32:05he takes the race
32:06win from Markscape
32:07and Craig Lowndes
32:08Stephen Richards
32:09in fourth
32:09Garth Tander
32:10fifth
32:11and Mark Larkham
32:12completes your top six
32:13so Tander
32:13and Larkham
32:14will line up
32:15on the front row
32:16for race two
32:16and how about that
32:17the man who was
32:17involved in that
32:18huge crash
32:19at Oren Park
32:20will have pole
32:21for race two
32:21fantastic
32:22and well done
32:23also to DJR
32:24well I think
32:25the thing with
32:25Radisic's car
32:28what they'll do
32:28they'll just whack
32:29a new gearbox
32:29in it
32:30and you don't know

33:04up trying
33:04to get up
33:04the inside
33:05and that's
33:07basically
33:08where the only
33:08gap was
33:09Radisic is
33:11the man
