00:00That is the general withdrawal. The Curse of Oak Island begins now.
00:05Tonight, on the Curse of Oak Island.
00:08Oh my goodness. Oh, look at this.
00:10Oh, it's beautiful. I have to see.
00:12Wow.
00:13Whoa.
00:14Is it right there?
00:15Yep.
00:15That's massive.
00:16That's been in there a long, long time.
00:18Yeah.
00:18That could be another fault.
00:20I can come all the time.
00:21Now, look at this. It's quite amazing. It's just absolutely incredible.
00:24That's stunning.
00:25Goodness.
00:26Blue-ish.
00:26Clay.
00:27Blue Clay.
00:27It was one of the keys of working at the money pit.
00:29This is evidence of what happened on Oak Island.
00:35There is an island in the North Atlantic where people have been looking for an incredible treasure for more than 200 years.
00:45So far, they have found a stone slab with strange symbols carved into it.
00:51Man-made workings that date to medieval times.
00:54And a lead cross whose origin may be connected to the Knights Templar.
00:59To date, six men have died trying to solve the mystery.
01:04And according to legend, one more will have to die before the treasure can be found.
01:13A couple of objectives here for this group.
01:27And this is a perfect group because we're going to talk about the swamp.
01:30Um, and we got the players right here.
01:33As another brisk fall day begins on Oak Island, brothers Rick and Marty Lagina and their team remain hopeful that before another harsh North Atlantic winter sets in, they will be able to finally solve a 230-year-old mystery.
01:50And I'd like this group to kind of decide, you know, we don't have much time left.
01:55What do we want to accomplish?
01:57Rick's off in Malta right now, but when he comes back, it'd be nice to give him a happy surprise.
02:01With search activities currently on hold in the Money Pit area, as representatives from SB Canada and Rock Equipment prepare the site for the team's deepest excavation yet in search of a fabled treasure.
02:18Rick Lagina and other members of the team have traveled to the European nation of Malta to investigate an incredible theory.
02:26That numerous treasured deposits were made on Oak Island between the 12th and 17th centuries by the medieval order of the Knights Templar and a related group known as the Knights of Malta.
02:42And while Rick is away, Marty and Craig are leading the effort to search for possible clues and valuables across Oak Island with a focus on the triangle-shaped swamp.
02:55So what are we going to do?
02:56Well, the big thing we're looking for in the swamp at this point in time is artifacts, something they can say who or when.
03:03I'd like a why, too, Craig.
03:05All this weird digging and manipulating in the swamp for what reason?
03:10The north area is where we found the vault.
03:14Yeah.
03:15In recent years, the team has been astonished to uncover numerous man-made structures throughout the swamp, including a massive paint feature near the center.
03:26This year, which has been dated to as early as 1200 AD, and a stone road in the southeast corner that is believed to be as much as 500 years old.
03:37Does that look like a vault to you?
03:40And this year, after uncovering sections of a mysterious cobblestone pathway in the northern region of the swamp,
03:47incredibly, the team uncovered an empty brick-and-slate vault-like feature that may be more than 300 years old.
03:56We think, you know, that vault is just one of many, and it sure could be.
04:03So we've got a big area that we could explore yet.
04:07Steve, can you show where we're expanded to?
04:09Okay.
04:12That area there.
04:15Now, the team will expand their search into the main body of the swamp,
04:20with the hope that even more important and potentially valuable secrets are still waiting to be revealed.
04:27So we did dig in here, all the way up to the road.
04:33Now we can expand westward, and we can do everything north.
04:36So, I've already staked this out.
04:39It's a huge area, and so there's a lot of ground we can dig.
04:44The swamp, as much effort as we've expended there, and as much material as we've moved,
04:49we've still probably only looked into about, I don't know, maybe 20%.
04:53That leaves 80% unexplored.
04:57So, there's plenty of room for more mysteries.
05:01You know, I know Big Brother Rick would certainly be delighted if we had covered another one of those vaults.
05:06With a clue, or something in it.
05:07Which might also help us to understand why it's there.
05:11Yeah.
05:12All right.
05:13You really asked me what time it is.
05:14My time is here.
05:15It's time to dig.
05:17Let's go.
05:18As Marty and Craig conclude the meeting in the War Room on Oak Island.
05:25More than 4,000 miles to the east, on the island nation of Malta.
05:32Oh, look at this.
05:33What a beautiful day.
05:35Unbelievable.
05:36Rick Lagina, along with his nephews, Alex Lagina and Peter Fernetti, and other members of the team.
05:44Hey, Matthew.
05:44Hi.
05:45How are you?
05:45Good morning.
05:46Have arrived in the capital city of Malta to visit the historic site known as Fort St. Elmo,
05:53a 16th century structure that was built by members of the Knights of Malta.
05:57Welcome to Fort St. Elmo.
06:00This is just one of the many historical fortifications of Malta.
06:06But this one is a symbol for Malta.
06:09Because it proves the building skills of the Knights.
06:13And that's why today we're here with Matthew Balsan, who's an archaeologist, specialized in hospitalary studies.
06:19He's going to give us some valuable insights.
06:22So, the Knights came to Malta in 1530.
06:26It was the Knights who actually placed us on the map and transformed us into an island fortress.
06:34But when they set foot on Malta, they realized they had to start and construct something.
06:39Now, that was something which was on the mind of the order ever since 1305,
06:43ever since the Templars were subdued by the papacy.
06:47The Knights of Malta always worried that the same will happen to us.
06:52In the 12th century, the order of the Knights Templar was established by the Catholic Church
06:59to defend Christian interests in Jerusalem during the Holy Wars, known as the Crusades.
07:06With the military and medical support of a related group, the Knights Hospitaller,
07:12who later became the Knights of Malta,
07:15the Templars waged many successful campaigns for nearly two centuries
07:19and built fortified strongholds throughout the Middle East and Europe,
07:25some with elaborate tunnels and underground water systems.
07:30The order also grew incredibly wealthy by establishing a sophisticated banking system
07:36and were rumored to have found a number of priceless religious artifacts,
07:42including the Holy Grail,
07:44the Golden Minora from Solomon's Temple,
07:47and the Ark of the Covenant.
07:50Treasures that some researchers believe
07:52the Templars began secretly transporting across the Atlantic Ocean around 1200 AD
07:59and buried them on Oak Island.
08:03But then, in the early 1300s,
08:06the Catholic Church and the King of France
08:09suddenly persecuted and dissolved the Knights Templar
08:12on controversial charges of heresy.
08:15Many were imprisoned and executed,
08:19but much of their remaining wealth
08:21and rumored religious treasures were never found.
08:25It has been speculated that these valuables
08:28were transferred to the Knights of Malta,
08:30along with secret knowledge
08:32about an established vault on Oak Island.
08:36And curiously,
08:37it is known that the Knights of Malta
08:39had a presence in Nova Scotia
08:41as early as the 17th century.
08:44We brought some artifacts with us from Oak Island.
08:47We'd like you to take a look at it, if you would.
08:49Sure.
08:49Is there a place we can do that?
08:50Yes, we can.
08:51Up inside the forts.
08:52Excellent.
08:54All right.
08:54Sounds like a great to follow you there.
08:57Now, in Malta,
08:58Rick and members of the team
09:00are hoping to learn more information
09:02about possible connections to Oak Island
09:04that might explain
09:06the mysterious structures in the swamp
09:08and artifacts they have found
09:10including the 14th century,
09:13possibly Templar-related lead cross,
09:16a button with a starburst design
09:18which may be connected to the Knights of Malta,
09:22and a pickaxe recovered from the
09:24in the money pit area,
09:26which scientific analysis has suggested
09:28could be of European origin.
09:31The reason for any of our research trips
09:34has been one single purpose,
09:37and that is to try to come up with answers
09:39regarding the Oak Island mystery.
09:42We believe that there was a trail
09:44to be followed here in Malta,
09:46hopefully associated with the Knights of Malta.
09:48We have a pick that we found.
09:52This was found in our money pit area.
09:54We put down a caisson.
09:56The name of the caisson was RF1,
09:58and this was found below 145 feet in the ground.
10:01Oh.
10:02Yes, so this is a pickaxe,
10:09which was also employed locally.
10:12I can tell you no different
10:13than the ones used hundreds of years earlier.
10:16But this is the Maltese,
10:17this is the batun,
10:18because you are digging with it.
10:20Batun means digging,
10:22especially in the quarrying process.
10:25First, they would cut out huge blocks of stone,
10:28then cut them down with this.
10:31But pickaxes were also used
10:32in the digging of underground tunnels,
10:35for example.
10:36And this was employed in Malta for centuries.
10:41And their marks are quite visible,
10:44even after centuries.
10:47Wow.
10:49Coming up.
10:51Nice, look at this.
10:53Whoa.
10:54Look at that timber right there.
10:56It does look like they've real potential.
10:57It's something that might have built up here.
10:59Yeah.
11:05Fellowship of the dig recommences now.
11:08Watching the curse of Oka
11:09on the history channel.
11:11Rachi.
11:12Even after centuries.
11:14When the knights arrived here in the 1500s,
11:17that was already in use.
11:19Yes, yes, it was already in use.
11:20Yes, the pickaxe is quite an ancient tool.
11:24Okay, yes.
11:25In Valetta Maltor at Fort St. Elmo.
11:27A stronghold built by the knights of Malta
11:30in the 16th century.
11:32Historian Matthew Balzan
11:34has just suggested
11:35that a pickaxe
11:37recovered six years ago
11:38by the Oak Island team
11:40from deep in the Money Pit area
11:42is the same kind of tool
11:44that was once used by the knights of Malta
11:46in the construction
11:47of their elaborate tunneling systems.
11:50Will a tool like that be used in limestone?
11:53Yes, it was the predominant tool
11:55to be used in cutting the stones
11:57with both the soft rock
12:00and even the hard rock.
12:02Did they make use of clay as a resource
12:05as part of the fortifications
12:06or anything else that they did?
12:08Partially, yes.
12:09Mostly clay is in the northern part of the island.
12:13We have a particular substance.
12:16It's called daffoon.
12:18It's made out of the product of clay.
12:20It's made out of broken pottery.
12:21Okay.
12:22Which would be crushed
12:23and mixed with the limestone
12:26for waterproofing purposes.
12:28Oh.
12:29We brought lots of broken pottery
12:30out of the Money Pit area.
12:31I'm sure.
12:32I absolutely have.
12:34When the Money Pit
12:35was first excavated down
12:37to a depth of 90 feet
12:38in 1804,
12:40searchers reported finding
12:42a heavy man-made clay substance
12:44that had been used as a sealant
12:46to keep water out of the shaft.
12:49Curiously,
12:50the team has found
12:51not only heavy clay,
12:53but also small fragments
12:55of pottery
12:56during their excavations
12:57in the Money Pit area.
13:00The depth that we found
13:01is on the island.
13:02That's the type of material
13:03that's down in the Money Pit.
13:05Quite similar.
13:07Is it possible
13:08that those substances
13:09as well as this pickaxe
13:12could be evidence
13:13that might connect
13:14the Knights of Malta
13:15to the O'Guyland mystery?
13:18It's incredible.
13:20The Knights of Malta,
13:21they were craftsmen
13:22extraordinary,
13:23just like the Knights Templar.
13:26Both organizations
13:27built incredibly complex structures.
13:30Is there some overlap
13:31that the construction techniques
13:34learned by one
13:35were exchanged with the other?
13:39It's hard to believe
13:40that each arrived
13:41at their unique abilities
13:42and talents
13:43without some sort of cooperation
13:45and some sort of interaction.
13:47You know, Matthew,
13:49we want to say thank you.
13:51It is only through help
13:52from people like yourself
13:53that will allow us
13:54to move this story forward.
13:56Oh, sir.
13:57My pleasure.
13:59Well, Rick and the team
14:01continue their investigation
14:02in Malta.
14:05Back on the western side
14:06of O'Guyland.
14:07We're still getting stuff in here.
14:10That corner is basically done.
14:12Yeah.
14:14Helen Sheldon,
14:15William MacDonald,
14:16and other members
14:17of the archaeology team
14:18are searching for clues
14:20in a mysterious round feature
14:22near the shoreline
14:23of Lot 5.
14:24Ever since Rick,
14:27Marty,
14:28and the team
14:28began excavating
14:30the structure
14:30in 2022,
14:32it has yielded
14:33a number
14:34of important discoveries.
14:36These include
14:37varied types
14:38of stone constructs
14:39in the future
14:40that suggest
14:42it was used
14:43as a campsite
14:44by a number of groups
14:45during different time periods.
14:48A mortar-like substance
14:50matching soils
14:51from over 100 feet deep
14:53in the Money Pit area
14:54and the so-called
14:57Starburst Button,
14:58which researcher
14:59Judy Rudabush
15:00has potentially connected
15:01to the Knights of Malta.
15:05It's doing good today.
15:06The archaeologists
15:07have made
15:08some very interesting finds
15:09that suggest
15:11there were
15:11multiple people here.
15:13So are there connections
15:14between Lot 5
15:15and the original
15:16depositional work?
15:17I hope that we can
15:19get to the point
15:20where Lot 5
15:21will reveal its secrets.
15:22Oh, nice.
15:27Look at this.
15:28Whoa.
15:29Whoa.
15:30Whoa.
15:32Whoa, that's so pretty.
15:33Look at that.
15:34That's amazing.
15:35That's a great find.
15:37Hey, Ellen,
15:38come look at this.
15:38Found something?
15:39Yeah.
15:41Check this out.
15:42Oh, my heavens.
15:43Look at that.
15:44It's huge.
15:44It's huge, huh?
15:46Wow.
15:47So that's a slipware
15:48decoration.
15:49So it's glazed
15:50and they put the slip on it
15:52and then they would
15:52trail the object
15:53through it
15:54to make that
15:54wiggly pattern.
15:55these coarse earthenwares
15:57they have a wide
15:59date range
15:59falls well within
16:01like our
16:01big to late 1700s.
16:03You can also find it earlier
16:04but it didn't change
16:05that much over time.
16:06The interesting thing is
16:08over there in that pitch
16:09that's where this
16:10starburst or the
16:11sunburst button
16:11came from.
16:12Oh, that's right.
16:13Yeah.
16:14This area is actually
16:15quite interesting now.
16:16Hmm.
16:16A piece of earthenware
16:18pottery
16:19that dates to the
16:2118th century
16:21or earlier?
16:24Could it be connected
16:25to whomever left
16:26the starburst button
16:27in this feature?
16:28And if so,
16:29could it offer
16:30more evidence
16:31that members
16:32of the Knights of Malta
16:33might be linked
16:34to the Oak Ivan mystery?
16:36Nice.
16:37Very nice.
16:38Awesome.
16:39Yeah.
16:40Well, keep digging.
16:41Keep digging.
16:42As the archaeology team
16:44continues their investigation
16:45on lot five.
16:49Hey, Billy,
16:49what is the plan?
16:50We're going to keep
16:51going in this general direction?
16:53We'll take slices this way
16:54because we found a vault
16:55right over there.
16:56We've never really
16:57explored around here.
16:59Gary Draper,
17:00Billy Gerard,
17:02Steve Guptill,
17:03and Charles Barkhouse
17:04are searching for more
17:06evidence of man-made
17:07workings and valuables
17:08in the northern region
17:10of the swamp.
17:12I'm hoping we find
17:13another fall as well.
17:14That fall was really
17:15cool.
17:17When you find
17:17something strange
17:18and out of place,
17:21like the square-shaped
17:22vault,
17:24and it's on Oak Island,
17:26I think it's a logical
17:27conclusion.
17:28There might be more of them.
17:29I don't know.
17:29Maybe there's something
17:30inside it.
17:31So we need to look for them.
17:34What do you see?
17:36Look at that timber
17:36right there.
17:37See, right there?
17:38Right there.
17:38We've already uncovered
17:41a piece of timber,
17:43which is a great sign
17:45because we have found
17:46some incredible
17:48man-made structures.
17:50Hopefully,
17:50we're close to
17:51an old feature.
17:53Hey, Charles.
17:54Hey, Marty.
17:54How are we doing?
17:56It was quite a substantial
17:57log right there.
17:59You came at a good time
18:00because we're just trying
18:01to figure out
18:02what this is.
18:02That was a big log.
18:18Yeah.
18:18It does look like
18:19there could be
18:20real potential
18:21that something
18:21might have been
18:22built up here, right?
18:23Yeah.
18:24Could Billy be correct
18:25that the team
18:26has just found
18:27part of another
18:28man-made structure
18:29buried under the muck
18:30in the swamp?
18:31If so,
18:33just what might
18:34they reveal
18:35as they uncover
18:36more of it?
18:37There's another log
18:37right there.
18:38Yeah?
18:39Yeah.
18:40Another one.
18:45My view would be
18:46that's been in there
18:46a long, long time.
18:48That's an important
18:48piece here.
18:49Looks like it's cut
18:50on that end, too.
18:52It's not.
18:52It's like an structure.
18:56Hopefully,
18:56it's something
18:56we can uncover here.
18:59Coming up.
19:00The mites?
19:01design
19:01all these tunnels
19:03in case of
19:04siege.
19:05It's just
19:05absolutely incredible.
19:07This is evidence
19:08that they needed
19:08to safeguard things.
19:13Diving in these
19:14waters
19:14is like nothing
19:15anybody has ever seen.
19:17My father's
19:18feathers of the team
19:18have just discovered
19:20evidence of another
19:21man-made
19:22wooden structure.
19:24Okay,
19:24let's start with
19:25things that are
19:26absolutely for sure.
19:28For sure,
19:28somebody built this
19:29to get out here.
19:30I don't think
19:30there's any way
19:31to argue that.
19:31No.
19:31The question is
19:32why and who?
19:34Yeah,
19:34were they looking
19:35for the vault
19:35that we found
19:36or did they know
19:37that that was there
19:38because they...
19:39There's another one.
19:39A whole bunch of
19:42activity occurred
19:42in the swamp.
19:43The swamp
19:44was manipulated.
19:45If not man-made
19:46entirely,
19:47at least manipulated.
19:48It would have been
19:49used for something
19:50very, very important
19:51and very secretive,
19:53but none of this
19:54is easy work
19:55from particularly
19:56long ago.
19:57Why somebody
19:58would do something
19:58like that
19:59remains a mystery.
20:01Billy,
20:01we're only going to
20:02find out by digging.
20:03The following morning,
20:12while the team
20:13works to uncover
20:14the mysterious
20:15wooden structure
20:16in the swamp
20:16on Oak Island,
20:18more than 4,000 miles
20:21to the east
20:22in Valetta, Malta.
20:23Hello.
20:25Good to see you.
20:27How are you?
20:27Hi.
20:28Nice to see you.
20:29Nice to see you,
20:29guys.
20:29Very cool.
20:30Hi.
20:31So, guys,
20:31we are in the heart
20:33of Valetta.
20:35Researcher Emiliano
20:36Zacchetti
20:36has arranged
20:37for Rip Lagina
20:38and other members
20:39of the team
20:40to meet investigative
20:41journalist
20:42Jean-Paul Mifsud
20:43for a guided tour
20:45of one of Malta's
20:46most mysterious
20:47and renowned features.
20:49Jean-Paul Mifsud
20:50is going to be
20:51our guide today
20:52and we're going
20:53to go down
20:54and take a look
20:54at the underground
20:55part of the city,
20:57the one who was built
20:58by the Knights
20:59of Malta.
21:01As a kid,
21:02this was our playground,
21:04you know,
21:05all these tunnels.
21:07If you move back
21:07in time over 400 years ago,
21:09this was just
21:11like a hill.
21:13The Knights
21:13took this hill,
21:15Mount Shibaras,
21:17and designed
21:18all the fortifications
21:21and the defense
21:22but also
21:23in case of
21:25siege tunnels.
21:27Valetta is like
21:28a grid
21:29and
21:30there are tunnels
21:32underneath
21:33each
21:34street.
21:36These tunnels
21:37were then used
21:37by the Knights.
21:39Oh,
21:40incredible.
21:41Be very careful
21:42walking down
21:43and your heads.
21:45Have fun down there.
21:46I've got an appointment
21:47at the Archive,
21:47so it's too close
21:48to that appointment
21:48for me to go down.
21:49Okay.
21:50All right,
21:50see you,
21:51dog.
21:51See ya.
21:51In 1565,
21:55after defunding
21:56Valetta
21:56from an attempted
21:57invasion
21:58by the Ottoman Empire,
22:00the Knights of Malta
22:01began a major
22:03renovation of the city
22:04to create a stronghold
22:05for their order.
22:07The new fortification
22:08included a vast network
22:10of underground tunnels
22:11that were dug
22:12out of the limestone bedrock.
22:15These tunnels
22:16offered not only
22:17a safe haven
22:18in times of war
22:19for the Knights
22:20and the citizens
22:21of Valetta,
22:22but also served
22:24as secure storage facilities
22:26and featured
22:27elaborate cisterns
22:28for collecting
22:29and controlling water.
22:31And according
22:33to some researchers,
22:34the tunnels
22:35may have also served
22:36as a hiding place
22:37for temporary-related
22:39treasures
22:39before they were
22:40transported
22:41to the new world.
22:46It's just
22:47absolutely incredible.
22:48As we are introduced
22:50to this underground area,
22:51it's massive.
22:52It is a highway,
22:54literally underground.
22:56Various tunnels,
22:57cisterns,
22:58chambers
22:59were developed
23:00and built
23:01to sustain a siege.
23:03I think
23:03it was representative
23:05of the skills
23:07necessary
23:07to construct
23:09a chamber
23:10or a vault
23:11or a roof
23:12that could
23:13hold treasure.
23:15These were
23:15the original
23:17cisterns.
23:19The function
23:20of this
23:20was obviously
23:21for the water
23:22and it's
23:24two
23:25cisterns.
23:28So,
23:28there is a
23:29connecting arch
23:32there.
23:33We'll go in
23:34and even
23:35further down.
23:37It's a bit deeper
23:38also.
23:40And at the end,
23:41there is
23:42a small
23:43connecting
23:44tunnel
23:45which links
23:46both reservoirs.
23:48So,
23:48this was done
23:49in 1570?
23:50That's the era.
23:51The way I hear
23:51the story,
23:52it was in response
23:53to the great siege
23:54that did all this.
23:54this was
23:55direct response
23:57because the knights
23:58were convinced
23:59that
24:00the Ottomans
24:01were going to
24:02try another
24:03great siege.
24:04So,
24:04there's an
24:05acute threat.
24:06Yeah.
24:06We're looking
24:07for reasons
24:07they may have
24:08taken an interest
24:09in other locations
24:11even as far
24:12as Oak Island.
24:13This is evidence
24:14that they might
24:15have been thinking
24:15that way
24:16that they needed
24:17to safeguard
24:17things.
24:20It certainly
24:21seems to be
24:21the right time frame.
24:23By that time
24:23they'd realized
24:24that they'd be
24:25susceptible
24:25to attacks here
24:26and it might
24:26be an idea
24:27that we need
24:27to move
24:28what we have
24:28and we take
24:29them to Nova Scotia
24:30and they deposit
24:31something on Oak Island.
24:34In 1632,
24:36the French sea captain
24:37and knight of Malta,
24:39Isaac de Rosalie,
24:40led an expedition
24:41to North America
24:42in order to establish
24:44France's colony
24:45of Acadia,
24:46known today
24:47as Nova Scotia.
24:49Curiously,
24:50the colony's headquarters
24:52were at Fort Point
24:53on the Le Havre River
24:55just 15 miles south
24:57of Oak Island.
24:59Is it possible
25:00that Isaac de Rosalie's
25:02expedition
25:02was also related
25:04to a secret mission?
25:06One decide
25:06to safeguard
25:07another cache
25:08of Templar-related
25:09treasures
25:10in the New World
25:11on Oak Island.
25:14So now,
25:15let's go and have
25:16a look at
25:17the tunnels.
25:19Let's go.
25:20Perfect.
25:20Okay.
25:22I'll see you, sir.
25:23Everything that we have seen
25:25regarding the efforts
25:26of the Knights of Malta,
25:27it's an incredible undertaking.
25:30They needed structures
25:31like these
25:31to protect their possessions
25:33to protect themselves.
25:35That's easily explainable
25:37here, the why.
25:38On Oak Island,
25:39it's not quite so easy
25:40to explain.
25:41Perhaps answers lie within.
25:44It's almost real.
25:45In the Knights era,
25:48this would have been
25:48the passageway
25:50which passes
25:51exactly underneath
25:53the street
25:54up at the top.
25:56You can really see
25:57the difference
25:57in the tools
25:58that they used.
25:59It's a kind of rock
26:00which you can
26:01chisel away
26:02straight.
26:04Is this clay?
26:06It's grayish,
26:08bluish.
26:09It's softer
26:09than the rhinestone.
26:11The blue clay
26:11played an important role
26:13because you have
26:14like a natural sealant.
26:17Can you come across
26:18something similar
26:19on your island?
26:21Yes.
26:22We know that
26:23waterproofing with blue clay
26:24had to be done
26:25in the money pit.
26:26Okay.
26:26Around whatever
26:27they're hiding in there.
26:34Coming up.
26:36Oh my goodness.
26:37What a be that.
26:38Oh, look at this.
26:39Oh, it's beautiful.
26:41Anything similar
26:43on your island?
26:45Yes.
26:46We know that
26:46waterproofing with blue clay
26:48had to be done
26:49in the money pit.
26:50Okay.
26:50Around whatever
26:51they're hiding in there.
26:53While exploring
26:54an underground tunnel system
26:55in Valetta, Malta
26:56that was constructed
26:57in the 16th century
26:59by members
27:00of the Knights of Malta.
27:01With Latina
27:02and members of the team
27:03have just found
27:04a potential clue
27:05that might be related
27:07to the Oak Island mystery.
27:10Waterproofing
27:10was one of the keys
27:11of working on the island
27:12because it was an island.
27:14Is it possible
27:14that Rick and the team
27:16have just seen
27:17a waterproofing method
27:19in tunnels
27:19that were created
27:20by the Knights of Malta
27:22which matches
27:23the reported design
27:25of the original
27:26Oak Island money pit?
27:28We know
27:29based on our
27:30work in the money pit
27:31that blue clay
27:33was used
27:33to waterproof things
27:34in the shafts
27:35in particular.
27:36Perhaps the tunnels.
27:37That's amazing.
27:39Might it be replicated here
27:41because we know
27:42that they needed
27:43some way to waterproof
27:44the aqueducts
27:45and the underground cisterns.
27:47So it's quite impactful
27:48to see it here.
27:50This kind of limestone
27:51you don't encounter
27:52on Oak Island
27:52to get very deep.
27:54Yep.
27:54The legend tells
27:56of flood tunnels
27:57on the island.
27:58This speaks to
27:59the capability
28:00of these people
28:00and experience
28:01with tunneling
28:02and when we talk
28:04about potential
28:05suspects on the island
28:06like the Knights of Malta
28:08and we're standing
28:09in the work
28:10of a group of people
28:11at the end
28:12of the 1500s
28:13I mean
28:13they did it.
28:15Yeah you're standing
28:16in the original description
28:18of the original
28:19find of the money pit
28:21where the treasure
28:22would have resided
28:23you could see
28:24the same things.
28:26There was no cribbing
28:27you could see
28:27the strike marks
28:28on the walls.
28:29It was that
28:30kind of consolidated
28:31it was very competent
28:32ground.
28:34Could this have been
28:35done long ago
28:36on Oak Island?
28:36I'd say
28:37I'd say it's definitive.
28:39All of the things
28:40that we see exhibited
28:42of the Knights of Malta's
28:43capabilities underground
28:45certainly are exemplified
28:47underground of the money pit.
28:48We have limestone
28:49we have blue clay
28:50and someone found a way
28:52to move water
28:53from the ocean
28:54to the money pit.
28:55So is it possible
28:56that this same type
28:58of work
28:58by the same peoples
29:00might that have
29:01been used
29:01to do the same
29:03type of work
29:03on Oak Island?
29:05It's possible
29:06and at some point
29:07that might be provable.
29:10You have led us
29:10to a place
29:11that affirms to us
29:12some of the work
29:13on Oak Island
29:14was known
29:14and conducted
29:15during the time frames
29:17that we have
29:18great suspicion of.
29:191500s
29:20times of the
29:21Knights of Malta.
29:22So for that
29:23we are extremely grateful.
29:25Thank you very much.
29:25Well, for us
29:27there's more to see
29:28in Malta
29:29so let's research us.
29:33Thank you so much.
29:34As Rick Lagina
29:35and members of the team
29:37continue their search
29:38for clues in Malta
29:39over 4,000 miles
29:42to the west
29:42on lot 5
29:43of Oak Island.
29:46Nice loose
29:46subsoil isn't that
29:47compared to what we had
29:48in the other beds?
29:48Yeah.
29:49Jack Bailey
29:50joins Helen Chowdhury
29:51and other members
29:53of the archaeology team
29:54as they dig
29:55for more artifacts
29:56and potential valuables
29:58in and around
29:59the mysterious
30:00stone foundation.
30:02We just have to go slow.
30:03Yeah.
30:04Yacht Live
30:05always just keeps
30:07getting better and better
30:08and being able to dig
30:10on the side
30:11of the feature today
30:11where that starburst
30:13button was found.
30:14I'm hoping we can find
30:16some other related artifacts
30:17to give us
30:18an earlier date.
30:26Oh, wow.
30:29Oh.
30:30Look at that.
30:32Oh, look.
30:33Looks like there's
30:34more.
30:34Oh, yeah.
30:35Oh, look.
30:36Oh, my goodness.
30:37There's a few shards
30:38together.
30:39Yeah, there's a lot
30:40of shards.
30:41Oh, what a nice piece.
30:42I bet you those
30:43would fit together.
30:44Yeah.
30:45It's everywhere.
30:46Look at all this.
30:46It's everywhere.
30:48This is great.
30:49That's almost like
30:50a whole plate.
30:50It is almost like
30:51a whole plate.
30:52Look at that.
30:53You've got the foot ring
30:53that fits on there.
30:55Yeah.
30:55It's the base.
30:56Oh, this is great.
30:58Look, there's tons of it here.
30:59So this looks like
31:00creamware here.
31:01Yeah, creamware.
31:01Okay.
31:02Yeah, so that's pretty neat.
31:03We're looking at something,
31:04you know, from the late
31:05three quarters of the 1700s.
31:07Yeah, it's awesome.
31:09Pottery from the late
31:1018th century?
31:13Because the team
31:14has found artifacts
31:14dating to as early
31:16as the 14th century
31:17and another
31:19from the 17th century,
31:21is it possible
31:22that they are now
31:23finding evidence
31:24of yet another period
31:25when this feature
31:26was occupied?
31:28Somebody ate off that plate.
31:30If so,
31:31who was it?
31:32And what
31:33was their purpose?
31:35This feature
31:35has actually been
31:36really interesting
31:37and has been changing
31:38our thoughts all along.
31:39Initially,
31:40when we started
31:40looking at things,
31:41it looked like
31:42it could have been
31:42perhaps a basic homestead.
31:44Do you want to?
31:45Stop banging it
31:46because I think
31:47you've got the rest
31:48of the plate there.
31:48I'll open it for you.
31:50But as we started
31:52going along
31:52and finding
31:53more and more artifacts,
31:54now I'm starting
31:55to think that
31:56it could have been
31:56multi-generational
31:57and having some
31:59bit of conspiracy
32:00to do with
32:01the money pit itself.
32:03There's definitely
32:03some ties
32:04and it's really
32:05making me rethink
32:06who was here
32:07and what were they doing.
32:09So this is definitely
32:10an artifact.
32:12Rich layer.
32:14If we're finding
32:14that right here,
32:15that much intact,
32:16I'm excited to see
32:17what else is in here.
32:18Yeah, exactly.
32:29Oh my goodness.
32:30What have you got?
32:31Oh, look at this.
32:33Oh, it's beautiful.
32:36That looks really fragile.
32:38Take a look.
32:39Yeah.
32:40While excavating
32:41the mysterious
32:42stone foundation
32:43near the shoreline
32:44on Lot 5,
32:45archaeology assistant
32:46Ethan Green
32:47has just made
32:48a potentially
32:49important discovery.
32:51Look, you've got
32:52the shank and everything.
32:53It's fully intact.
32:54Yeah.
32:56Hey, Helen, the jab.
32:57You gotta come
32:57check this out.
32:59Yeah.
32:59You gotta look at this.
33:01Ethan just found this.
33:02Oh, my goodness.
33:03Whoa.
33:04There's something on there.
33:05That's not just a flat part.
33:06He had good eyes.
33:07He can see it, too.
33:08What do you think it is?
33:09It kind of looks
33:10like a flower to me.
33:12I think the fact
33:13that it's got
33:13any kind of pattern on it
33:14is going to be fascinating.
33:15Yeah.
33:16Yeah.
33:16An ornate button
33:18featuring a flower design?
33:20Could Fiona Steel
33:21be correct
33:22that it may bear
33:23a key clue
33:24that might help identify
33:25just who left it
33:26in this feature
33:27on Lot 5?
33:28A feature
33:29that the team believes
33:31may be connected
33:32to one or more operations
33:34to hide something of value
33:35in the money pit.
33:37Keep in mind,
33:38we found the Starburst button
33:39right over there.
33:40Yeah.
33:40Like we're talking
33:41a few feet away.
33:42Yeah.
33:43So if this is anything similar,
33:44then that's pretty exciting.
33:45Yep.
33:45There is that connection
33:48between the Starburst button
33:49and the Knights of Malta.
33:51So who knows?
33:52This new button
33:53we just found
33:54could relate
33:55to that Starburst button.
33:57It could have an insignia
33:58or something
33:59on the face of the button
34:00that could give us
34:02more information
34:02to whether or not
34:03the Knights of Malta
34:04were on Ocon.
34:05We're going to have to take
34:07that to the lab
34:07and do some scans on it.
34:10Emma will tell us
34:11how old that is.
34:11Yeah.
34:12And exactly what it's made of.
34:13Yeah.
34:14Yeah.
34:15Ethan's on a roll.
34:16Yeah, yeah.
34:17It really is.
34:18Let's get back to safety.
34:19Let's get back to it.
34:21Nice find.
34:25The following morning
34:26on Oak Island
34:28as the investigations continue
34:30in the northern region
34:32of the swamp
34:32running out of time.
34:34Hey!
34:34And on Lot 5
34:36This could probably
34:37still come down a bit.
34:38Yeah.
34:40Some 4,000 miles to the east
34:42off the coast of Malta.
34:45From one island to another.
34:46One beautiful island to another.
34:48Yeah.
34:49Rick Laguerre
34:49and the members of the team
34:51are being transported
34:52to the island of Gozo
34:53where the Knights of Malta
34:55established one of their
34:56strongholds in 1565.
34:59We brought some of the artifacts.
35:01Yeah.
35:01Because maybe we can find
35:02some connections.
35:03There, the team will visit
35:05the citadel of Victoria
35:07in the hopes
35:08of making more
35:09possible connections
35:10between the Knights of Malta
35:12and the Oak Island mystery.
35:15It's beautiful.
35:16Even though
35:17the beauty
35:17and the aesthetics
35:18of what we are about to see
35:20we are focused.
35:22We mustn't lose fact
35:23of the magnitude
35:24of the possibilities
35:25that we are beginning
35:28to hopefully uncover.
35:31Is this the place?
35:32Yeah, this one.
35:33We are here
35:34in Malta
35:35to hopefully
35:36prove
35:37the connection
35:38between the Knights of Malta
35:40and Okada.
35:41Hey, Dennis.
35:42Hey, how are you?
35:43How are you?
35:44Dennis Darmannan
35:45is a Malte's historian
35:46and leading expert
35:48on military artifacts
35:49and buttons.
35:50And today,
35:51Corey and Malta
35:52and Emiliano Ciccetti
35:53have arranged
35:55for Dennis
35:56to analyze
35:56the Starburst button
35:57that was found
35:58on Lot 5
35:59one year ago.
36:00Well, sir,
36:01we have a button
36:03to show you.
36:04We're an archaeologist.
36:05They believe
36:05it has the potential
36:06to be one of the oldest
36:07buttons we've found
36:08on the island.
36:09Let's see.
36:12There we go.
36:13That's all right.
36:14There it is.
36:15Ah, well,
36:17the pattern is more
36:18likely a Spanish pattern.
36:21That's interesting
36:21because some members
36:23of the Knights of Malta
36:24came from Spain.
36:25Of course.
36:26And what I can add
36:28to that
36:28is
36:29I did come across
36:31a similar pattern here
36:33and
36:34according to the sizes
36:35they were either worn
36:36on a waistcoat
36:37or else they were worn
36:39the larger sizes
36:40on their coats.
36:42I would date it
36:42to about
36:431650
36:44not later than 1675.
36:47That's crazy.
36:50That may indicate
36:50the period of construction
36:52for that feature
36:52on Lot 5.
36:54Yeah, correct.
36:55It's more than 100 years
36:56before the discovery
36:57of the money pit.
36:58Yeah.
36:58It's quite remarkable.
37:00Yeah.
37:00Yes.
37:01I quite agree.
37:03And this design
37:04was quite
37:04sort of trendy
37:05but the more elaborate
37:07adds to the prestige
37:08of the owner.
37:10Okay.
37:11So we know
37:12in Nova Scotia
37:14in the 1630s
37:15we had the presence
37:16of Knights of Malta.
37:17Yes.
37:18So this button
37:19may connect
37:19to the Knights of Malta.
37:21Yes.
37:22That's quite remarkable.
37:26Amazing.
37:30The ocean
37:31has been taken down ships.
37:32That's quite remarkable.
37:34Mm-hmm.
37:34Amazing.
37:35In the historic citadel
37:37located on the Maltese
37:39island of Gozo,
37:41Rick Lagina
37:41and members of the team
37:43have just learned
37:44from historian
37:45and button expert
37:46Dennis Dormanin
37:47that the button
37:49bearing a starburst design
37:50which was found
37:51on Lot 5
37:52dates back
37:53to the 17th century
37:55and could be connected
37:56to the Knights of Malta.
37:58So these uniforms
38:00were highly personalized.
38:02Yes.
38:02Yes, they are.
38:03They would wear
38:04the fashion of the time.
38:05Yeah.
38:05These buttons
38:06were more trendy
38:07with the aristocratic level.
38:09So the Knights
38:10would hold their status
38:12in what they wear.
38:13Yeah.
38:14So we'd like to show you
38:15a picture of a uniform
38:17that might have had a button
38:18like that
38:19with a swirl on it.
38:20I'd like to get
38:24your thoughts on that.
38:26Yes.
38:27It's a similarity.
38:29Either it's a button
38:30exactly like it
38:31or of a larger size
38:34because a coat button
38:37which would be larger
38:38than let's say
38:40a vest button
38:40or a waistcoat button.
38:42Right.
38:42So with this starburst button
38:44in particular
38:45there is a possibility
38:46that this button
38:47would have been worn
38:48by somebody
38:49a member of the Knights of Malta.
38:50Oh, yes.
38:51I agree.
38:52Well, that's a
38:52pretty exciting possibility.
38:54I find that to be
38:55very, very interesting.
38:57Oh, yeah.
38:59If Dennis Darmanin
39:00is correct
39:01that the so-called
39:02starburst button
39:03may very well have come
39:05from the uniform
39:06of a member
39:06of the Knights of Malta,
39:08could it help prove
39:09that the order
39:10was connected
39:11to the Oak Island mystery
39:12and also explain
39:14the mortar-like material
39:16that was found
39:17in the round feature
39:18on Lot 5
39:19that matches soils
39:20from over 100 feet deep
39:22in the Money Pit area.
39:24We have the research
39:25which kind of brought us
39:26here in the first place
39:27that really
39:28spell out Malta.
39:31But then we have
39:31this mysterious button
39:32that seems to kind of
39:33be tying everything together.
39:35So I think that's
39:35an exciting possibility.
39:37It's true.
39:37We now have a visit
39:40predating the discovery
39:41of the Money Pit
39:42by a significant amount
39:44of time.
39:45But to what end?
39:47This may be the button
39:48that explains
39:48what the Lot 5 feature
39:49possibly represents.
39:51You know, Dennis,
39:53we can only solve
39:54a treasure hunt
39:54by looking to the past
39:56in order to understand
39:58what lies ahead of us.
39:59Yes.
40:01You have certainly
40:01given us great insight
40:02and we really,
40:03really appreciate it.
40:04But my final comment is
40:06I'm always here
40:07to assist.
40:10Thank you very much.
40:11It's an honor.
40:11Although thousands of miles
40:15currently separate members
40:16of the Oak Island team,
40:19their new discoveries,
40:20both on the island
40:21and halfway across the globe,
40:25may have brought them
40:26ever closer
40:27to the answers they seek.
40:30And now,
40:31as their long journey
40:32to solve this mystery continues,
40:35perhaps it is now
40:36only a matter of time
40:38before the ultimate revelation
40:40is closed
40:41from deep underground.
40:47Next time
40:47on The Curse of Oak Island.
40:50We're in the oldest prison
40:51in Malta.
40:52This is a place
40:53very rich in symbolism.
40:55The four-dot cross
40:55is thought to represent
40:56the presence of holy relics.
40:58There was indeed
40:59a family bloodline
41:00that we can connect
41:02to Oak Island.
41:03It's quite remarkable.
41:04This is one of the boulders
41:06that's on the map.
41:07Come on, baby.
41:08Let's find a treasure.
41:09What the heck is that?
41:10Yeah!
41:10What the heck is that?
41:11What the heck is that?
41:12Really pretty.
41:12Very good.
41:13I wasn't expecting that.
41:14The other one.
41:19The robin people
41:20That's all right.
41:20The robin people
41:21just don't stop.
41:22But if they don't stop it,
41:23it's just one of their best.
41:23It's all right.
41:24This is all right.
