00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown on Channel 4.
00:35The date is Monday, July the 3rd,
00:37and we are ready for another 15 rounds of letters and numbers.
00:41Thank you so much for tuning in.
00:43Let's say hello to Rachel Riley.
00:46Rachel, just come on, get it out of the way.
00:49Can you stand up to give us its full glory?
00:50She is loving every second of this, isn't she?
00:53There we go.
00:54We look like Queen minus one on Bohemian Rhapsody.
00:59Do you want the stories?
01:00I do. Of course I do.
01:02Two different people have sent us in,
01:03and if you only watch The Odd Time and you think we've lost our mind,
01:06I made a very quick comment.
01:08Wouldn't it be great if viewers sent in jumpers,
01:10thinking it would never happen?
01:12Oh, my goodness, it's happened, as you'll see tomorrow and the day after.
01:15And they've diversified it as well.
01:17So let's start with this, because this is really, really special, the jumper.
01:20It's so good, you might think it was one of those screen knits.
01:25It's not.
01:26It's hand-knitted, and it comes from Grandma Lucy and Team Knitted,
01:31which is a really small start-up.
01:33Lucy started knitting at the age of eight because of her grandmum,
01:36and then came up with this idea, which is brilliant, Lucy.
01:38So this is from young Lucy.
01:40That's fantastic.
01:41Who's knitted this.
01:42So thank you so, so much for this.
01:43Very clever.
01:44Now this, let's say hello to Hazel Lily.
01:48Hazel Lily's very, very careful.
01:49She didn't have to do anything.
01:51She can't knit.
01:52But her friend Wendy can.
01:55And she said, look, they're looking.
01:56And Wendy came up with the idea to do the little beanie hat,
02:01which is a little small for me.
02:03I love you're getting the flavour of our viewers.
02:04You know, my little girls still wear knitted stuff
02:06that was sent to us when my first home was born.
02:09It's so nice having homemade knitted things, isn't it?
02:12Well, listen, hats off to all of you for helping,
02:15and literally hats off, because I can't do the show with this.
02:18Would that fit your little one?
02:20I think it would, wouldn't it?
02:21I think it might do, actually.
02:22All right, there you go.
02:23You take that from Maeve.
02:24Yeah, there you go.
02:25You can have that from Maeve.
02:26And I'll leave it there for the show.
02:28That's a good thing to do.
02:29Right, let's give you a heads up about Dictionary Corner
02:32for the next four days, or J of the D, Susie Dent,
02:35alongside a broadcasting icon that is these days
02:39flying the flag for country on Radio 2 for fans everywhere.
02:44Bob Harris.
02:45Hey.
02:47And we welcome back on for a hat-trick of wins,
02:50it's Adrian Clarke from Solihull.
02:53And listen, we know that your little one
02:54sort of challenged you to come on here.
02:56Who else is watching you back home today?
02:59There'll be a range of friends and family.
03:01I think most people know how much I love this show.
03:04So I think they'll be amusing themselves.
03:07In fact, I'm actually on it.
03:08So it'll probably be really embarrassing for me
03:09to sit there and watch it with them.
03:11But, yeah, I think a lot of friends and family
03:13will be keeping an eye out for me.
03:15Not embarrassing at all.
03:16Two wins.
03:17Looking for the hat-trick today.
03:18But Mike is hoping that that is your lot.
03:21Mike Lott from Liverpool.
03:22How are you doing, sir?
03:23I'm good, thanks.
03:23How are you?
03:24Now, listen, softball is what you're into.
03:28And it is actually really special.
03:30And played a lot in the UK.
03:33The participation levels are really good.
03:36Tell me why it's special.
03:38I think it's a sport that anyone can play,
03:41old, young, but also, especially nowadays,
03:44with the way gender equality is so prominent,
03:48you've got men and women playing in the same team
03:50against each other and being able to make
03:53the same contribution.
03:54In fact, actually, the strongest teams
03:55normally have the strongest female players.
03:58Listen, you founded the Liverpool Softball League.
04:01And in most major towns, there is softball being played.
04:04What's the best way just to find out
04:06for anyone that wants to do?
04:07So you can go to the British Softball UK website,
04:11BS UK, and there's a diamond finder there.
04:13Well, let's see if you're going to hit a home run today
04:15or strike out against our champion.
04:17Good luck to Mike and good luck to Adrian.
04:20Take me to first base, Mr Clark.

10:13and Adrian? Eight. And eight. The seven is? Bendia. And the eight? Broadens. Broadens.
10:21Let's head over the horizon to Susie. Broadens, fine. You need two E's for Bendia.
10:27But, yeah, Broadens, great for eight. And we managed a couple more eights,
10:31didn't we? Baronies. Baronies. Yes. And Bordies. Is that right? Yes.
10:37Yeah. Yes. Got to be a skateboarding thing, is it? Yeah, almost.

12:14Upstage.
12:15There you go. As you've just done with upstage for seven. Well done. Well done indeed.
12:20More numbers for us now. Mike, your first time choosing.
12:23Could I have two large and the rest small, please?
12:26You can indeed. Thank you, Mike. Two from the top, four not.
12:29And for the second time today, your numbers are six, eight, three, five.
12:37And the large one's 50 and 25. And the target to reach 831.
12:43It's 3-1. Numbers up.

13:20Very good. And Adrian?

13:23Missed it. So here we go, Mike.
13:2625 plus 50 is 75.
13:28Yep, 75.
13:308 plus 3 is 11.
13:32Yep.
13:32Multiply the two together.
13:34It's 8-2-5.
13:35And add six.
13:35Perfect. 8-3-1.
13:40Big ten points.
13:41A softball player has started to play hardball.
13:44Just five points in it now as we head over to Dictionary Corner.
13:48And Bob Harris, I demand you take me on another enchanting musical journey.
13:54Well, I'm touring at the moment.
13:56I've just started a tour, Colin, which is with a friend of mine called Colin Hall.
14:04Colin was the custodian at Mendips, which is John Lennon's childhood home.
14:11And from there, we began to get ideas for a couple of radio programs.
14:16We did a documentary called The Day John Met Paul, which charted the events of that incredible day, 6th of July 1957, when they met for the first time at a quarryman gig in Liverpool.
14:31And then we did a show called The Songs The Beatles Gave Away, because there are nearly 30 songs, Colin, that one or other member of The Beatles took a hand in writing,
14:43but which the band itself never recorded.
14:47And there are some absolutely lovely stories.
14:50And may I tell you my favourite?
14:52Yeah.
14:53OK, so Paul McCartney and Scylla Black were really, really good friends.
14:57I mean, they knew each other from the days of the Cavern in Liverpool.
15:00And Scylla, in 68, became the first female artist, it seems incredible now,
15:07but the first female artist to have her own television show from the BBC.
15:12And she was looking for a theme tune, and she said to Paul, you know,
15:19I'd love you to sort of think about coming up with an idea for me.
15:22She said, I'd love it to be something that's very welcoming, you know,
15:26that's saying to the audience, you know, come in, you're going to have a lovely time,
15:31it's warm, it's welcoming.
15:33And so he began to work on the idea for Step Inside Love.
15:38Step Inside Love, you know, it's the perfect song.
15:43So then I was talking to Scylla about this some time ago, before she passed away,
15:49but she gave me a demo that they'd made of the original song
15:54when Paul was still working on it.
15:56And it was Paul on an acoustic guitar, George Martin and Scylla,
16:00just in a tiny little studio, just off Wardour Street in Soho,
16:04just demoing this song.
16:07And listening to that demo made me realise also, if I didn't, you know,
16:11didn't know before, but it confirmed,
16:14what a fabulous voice Scylla had.
16:16Yeah.
16:17Particularly when she was just calmer, more soulful,
16:21and the demo of this song is absolutely beautiful,
16:23and it is one of those songs the Beatles gave away.
16:26It's so beautiful.
16:27Beautiful. Thank you, Bob.
16:28APPLAUSE
16:30Five points in it just, and Adrian, you're picking letters.
16:36Consonant, please.
16:37Thank you, Adrian.
16:38D.
16:40A vowel.
16:42O.
16:44Consonant.
16:46R.
16:47Another one.
16:49L.
16:51Another one.
16:53S.
16:54A vowel.
16:55I.
16:57Another one.
16:58Vowel, please.
17:05And lastly, O.
17:08Here we go.
17:21THEY CONFER
17:39Adrian. Seven. And Mike? Seven.
17:42And seven. Dollies. Yeah, and Mike, a couple of dollies.
17:47Excellent. Seven points each.
17:50Jumped out dollies. Anything else? Soldier. Yeah. For seven.
17:54And I love this word, it's only a six, but oodles.
17:58Oodles. Oodles.
18:00Oodles and oodles of love.
18:02Oodles. Very good stuff.
18:05Mike, letters, please. A consonant, please.
18:08Thank you, Mike. R. And another.
18:11C. And another.
18:14F. And a fourth, please.
18:17T. A vowel.
18:20E. Another vowel.
18:22A. And another.
18:25O. And a consonant.

18:31And the last one. A.
18:34Start the clock.
18:35F origami.
18:36A holcase Maurer.
18:37There we go.
18:38A consonant.
18:40How many, Mike?
19:07Seven.
19:08And how many, Adrian?
19:09Seven.
19:09Might be the same word again.
19:11Mike?
19:11Coaster.
19:12Yeah.
19:12Adrian?
19:13Factors.
19:14Oh, there you go.
19:14Different factors and coaster.
19:17Why do we call coasters?
19:20That is a very good question, which I will investigate.
19:23Ah, is that the political way I said, I have no idea?
19:26I generally have no idea.
19:27I can tell you about tumblers and that kind of thing, but coaster no one.
19:30Oh, tumblers is another weird one.
19:32Could we do coasters, tumblers, anything connected to that?
19:36I'll write it down.
19:37Come to think of it, mug.
19:38Oh, I can do that one as well.
19:40Yes.
19:41OK.
19:41What else have we got in the dictionary corner?
19:43We have got one more, Colin.
19:44Yeah.
19:45Forecast.
19:46And a forecast.
19:47That's those eight, yeah.
19:48Yeah.
19:48We'll not forecast the winner of this.
19:5050 plays 45.
19:52Numbers have been really important.
19:53Stumble last time from a champion.
19:55Let's see if you can get back on the horse.
19:57I'll stick with one large and five small, please.
19:59One large with a slim lead.
20:01You're not taking any chances.
20:02Let's see what we have this time around.
20:05Your selection is three, ten, seven, two, four and 25.
20:12And the target?
20:14910.
20:15910.
20:16Numbers up.
20:47910 the target, Adrian.
20:50910.
20:50Yeah.
20:50And Mike?
20:51No, I didn't get it.
20:53Just missed it.
20:54Just some rollercoaster in the numbers today.
20:56Off you go, Adrian.
20:577 plus 2.
20:587 plus 2, 9.
21:00Times 4.
21:0136.
21:02Times a 25.
21:03900.
21:04And an add of 10.
21:05Well done.
21:07Well done.
21:07910.
21:08APPLAUSE
21:08Rachel, there's a girl in my work who is just a whiz on the letters,
21:15but fears the numbers, and I cannot get her to apply for countdown.
21:19And there'll be a lot of people like that as well.
21:23So it's always good to point out the obvious, which is when there's a zero
21:26and you've got a 10 in your numbers, you're just looking to find the 91
21:30to multiply by 10.
21:32That's one way.
21:33I mean, I think it's rude to talk about Susie while she's here.
21:37I'm joking.
21:38Susie's very good.
21:39Yeah.
21:40But just like the letters, there's little formulas you can work out.
21:43And if you do fancy it, you're just an email away.
21:47Adrian feared being on here.
21:48He's already got two wins.
21:50So you just never know.
21:51Drop the email.
21:52Let us look after you.
21:53It's countdown at channel4.com if you like to be here.
21:57Countdown at channel4.com.
21:59And here's a little thing to get your confidence up for a play.
22:03And another Tea Time teaser, feed a crab.
22:06Feed a crab.
22:08Told lots of lies without a mask.
22:11Told lots of lies without a mask.
22:29Bare-faced.
22:34Bare-faced is our Tea Time teaser.
22:37Five rounds left.
22:39Mike Lott, just 15 behind still.
22:41So, still in this.
22:43Let's go.
22:44A consonant, please.
22:45Thank you, Mike.
22:46P.
22:47And another.
22:47S.
22:50And another.
22:51N.
22:52And the fourth, please.
22:55L.
22:56And a vowel.
22:58E.
22:59Another.
23:01A.
23:02And another.
23:03U.
23:05And the fourth vowel, please.
23:08A.
23:08And another consonant.
23:10Lastly, M.
23:12And let's play.
23:44Mike?
23:45Seven.
23:46Adrian?
23:46Seven.
23:47Well done.
23:47What have we got, Mike?
23:48Ampules.
23:49Ampules.
23:51Manuals?
23:52Manuals.
23:52Over to Susie Dent.
23:53OK, so, I was looking up ampules,
23:56and, um, unfortunately,
23:59that spelling without the O is American English,
24:02U.S. English,
24:03which means we can't have it.
24:04So, I'm very sorry about that.
24:06We can't allow an Americanism because he likes American sports.
24:09Could we make the exception?
24:10No?
24:10Oh, I would love to.
24:12But we can't.
24:12But, yeah,
24:13Countdown Rules for a long time have said no U.S. spelling.
24:16We can have U.S. words.
24:17Yeah.
24:17Just not spellings.
24:18All right.
24:19Anything else?
24:20No, that's it, I think.
24:22It's tough.
24:22Adrian, more letters.
24:24A consonant, please, Rachel.
24:25Thank you, Adrian.
24:26And a consonant, please.
24:38And lastly, S.
24:40Good luck.
24:55You're listening to S.
24:57It's a lot.
24:57Good work.
25:06Good work.
25:08That's all the time I have for you, I'm afraid.
25:28What have you got, Adrian?
25:29Seven.
25:30And Mike?
25:31Seven.
25:31Very good.
25:32What's the words?
25:33Depicts.
25:33Depicts.
25:34And Mike?
25:35Depicts.
25:35There you go.
25:37Fantastic.
25:38A couple of other sevens up there, but you'd be doing well to get an eight.
25:41Yep, couldn't get there.
25:42Nothing.
25:43Right, well, we'll stay in Dictionary Corner.
25:45Susie Dent, I'm not expecting you to turn around coasters that quick.
25:49So what are origins of words today?
25:52No, I am going to because you intrigued me and I just, in the break, had a very quick look.
25:58And it's an excellent question.
25:59So I'm ditching my planned origin.
26:01I'm going to tell you about tumblers and mugs and coasters and things.
26:04So a coaster is a lovely one because originally it was a bottle coaster and it was a low round tray and it was passed around, you know, people might be serving drinks.
26:15But formerly it was on wheels.
26:18So it would kind of go round the perimeter of a dining table and it would coast around like that as though it was around the coaster of the table.
26:26So that is why eventually when the drinks were put down on the table they were put on a coaster, a miniature version of that tray that was passed around, which I love.
26:34We mentioned tumbler as well.
26:37So tumbler, originally the glasses were rounded at the bottom so you actually could not put them down on the table.
26:44So it almost encouraged you to drink very quickly because you couldn't put a half finished drink down on the table.
26:50And mug, mug is an interesting one.
26:52So possibly got Scandinavian roots, might go back to the Vikings, meaning an earthenware vessel.
26:56That makes sense.
26:57But the reason it also meant a face is that in the 17th century and a little bit beyond, drinking mugs often had very grotesque faces on them.
27:07You can still see examples of them.
27:08They look a little bit like gargoyles.
27:10You can still buy them, I think, as well.
27:12Toby jugs, right?
27:12Yeah, the Toby Philpot jug, but also mugs you could get with sort of similar, actually more grotesque faces on them.
27:19And that is why we think mug came to be in the face, which is why you have a mug shot and that kind of thing as well.
27:25And if you are mugged, if you are unfortunate enough to be mugged, you are often hit, possibly hit in the face.
27:32I think it was a fighting term.
27:33And if you are foolish and easily duped, you are also a mug.
27:37And the idea, again, is that somebody has done something behind your back, behind your face, if you were.
27:42So it's gone off in all sorts of different directions.
27:44But I love Coaster.
27:45Thank you for asking me that one.
27:46Look at that.
27:47That's why she's the best in the business.
27:49Thank you, Susie.
27:52I was going to say, what about crockery, but I think I pushed my luck today.
27:56So let's just get back to the U.
27:56That goes back to a Viking word, crocker, which also meant a vessel.
28:00You know, that wasn't.
28:01Should have risked it.
28:03Mike, let's get letters.

29:21There you go.
29:22Over to Bob and Susie.
29:23There is a seven there with evinces.

30:53Yes, we've got Domain and you've got a seven.
30:57Yeah, we had this quite recently, actually.
30:59It's a nice one and it's musical.
31:01So, Monodia, M-O-N-O-D-I-A,
31:04a musical composition in which there's a single melodic line.
31:07Call yourself a DJ, Harris.
31:09You didn't get Monodia.
31:11My goodness me.
31:12We're all of a sudden in crucial Countdown Conundrum territory,
31:16but take nothing for granted, given the numbers rounds today.
31:19Let's get that out of the way first.
31:21Mike, you're choosing those fateful final numbers.
31:24Can I have six more, please?
31:25Yeah, you can indeed.
31:26You're taking your life and the potential of a teapot into your own hands.
31:30Final numbers of the day.
31:32Four, ten, four, eight, two, and one odd one.
31:38Three, let's see what we've got.

32:30Add eight.
32:31Yeah, lots of ways for this one.
32:32Two, four, eight.
32:33As long as it's right.
32:35Adrian.
32:35I'm in exactly the same way.
32:36Very good.
32:38APPLAUSE
32:39Rachel, ten points in it.
32:42Ten points left up for grabs.
32:44I've always thought this.
32:45We say crucial countdown conundrum, but obviously Mike would need to do two conundrums in order
32:50to win, because it would be a draw if you get it.
32:52It's sort of the purgatory between non-crucial and crucial, isn't it?
32:57It's almost like it needs a new name all to itself.
33:00You're such a pedant, Colin.
33:02Still crucial.
33:03I would say enthusiast you go with it.
33:04Let the boys get on with it.
33:07Let's do exactly that.
33:08It may not be the last time I say this today, but it could be.
33:12That will depend on Adrian Clarke, our champion.
33:15Mike, finger on buzzer.
33:16Adrian, here we go.
33:18Let's reveal today's crucial countdown conundrum.
33:30Adrian.
33:37Nominally?
33:38We'll only need one.
33:40APPLAUSE
33:4094 for Adrian Clarke and a hat-trick of wins.
33:49That was a bit touch and go, though.
33:50Yeah.
33:51Still shaking.
33:52You got there.
33:53Little bit of nerves towards the end, and the other way for you, Mike.
33:55You settled right in.
33:56Enjoy it?
33:57It did, yes.
33:58Great, thank you.
33:58Well, listen, thank you so much for coming in.
34:00Keep flying the flag for softball,
34:02because it's such an inclusive pastime in sport.
34:06You're doing a great job.
34:07Thank you for being here.
34:08Lovely.
34:09Good game today, eh, Bob?
34:10Really enjoyed it.
34:12Lovely.

34:16and on behalf of young Maeve,
34:18who'll be wearing this wonderful countdown hat,
34:21to Hazel and Wendy.
34:23That's it for today.
34:24What a really good game.
34:25Hopefully we'll see you same time, same place tomorrow.
