00:00Work is currently underway in Regent's Park to create a new commemorative garden in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.
00:08The garden is designed to be biodiverse and climate resilient, is scheduled to open in April 2026, marking 100 years of the late Queen's birth.
00:19According to the Royal Parks, the space will offer a place for reflection and connection with the natural world right in the heart of central London.
00:28The two-acre garden is being developed on a previously unused brownfield site, which will be transformed into a vibrant green space rich in wildlife.
00:38Some of the planting will include species native to the Commonwealth countries, chosen not only for their visual appeal, but also for their ability to thrive amid changing climate conditions.
00:50In total, the site will feature 2,000 square metres of wildflower meadows to support invertebrates and over 5,000 square metres of friendly planting for the environment as well.
01:02Construction is now four months into 16-month schedule, with key features starting to take shape.
01:09New paths have already been laid and work has begun on a circular pond intended to boost local biodiversity.
01:17More than 200,000 bulbs and 40 trees have been ordered to create a colourful, nectar-rich landscape.
01:24Planting will include species with royal significance for links to Queen Elizabeth II, such as the specially cultivated Diamond Jubilee Plant and the Tulipa Royal Celebration Plant, as well as her personal favourites like the Lily of the Valley.
01:39The garden is separate from the planned UK National Memorial to Queen Elizabeth II, which is to be located in St James' Park near Buckingham Palace.
01:50Queen Elizabeth II was born on the 21st of April in 1926 and ascended to the throne in 1952.
01:58Her reign lasted 70 years, making her the longest reigning monarch in British history.
02:02She passed away on the 8th of September 2022 at Balmoral Castle, a moment that marked the end of an era for the United Kingdom and the wider Commonwealth as well.
02:13She became patron of the Royal Horticultural Society in the year of her accession and regularly attended the Chelsea Flower Show during her reign, a reflection of her lifelong love of nature and the outdoors, and it's why the garden is being made.
02:30The Royal Parks confirmed that recruitment is underway for a dedicated team of horticultural staff to care for the new space once it opens.
02:38The garden will join other celebrated areas within Regent's Park, including Queen's Mary's Gardens, home to London's largest collection of roses.
02:48Matthew Pottage, Head of Horticulture and Landscape Strategy at the Royal Parks, said the new garden would offer a meaningful space for reflection, biodiversity and connection with nature.
