00:00The
01:00We are gathered here to honor Captain Jim Hadley, a man we all admire and love.
01:30It's a pity we must age and let others take our place, but that's the way it is.
01:35Like many of you, I've known Jim ever since he joined the department.
01:40And as chief of your fire department, I want to take this opportunity personally to thank him for his 40 years of loyal devotion to duty.
01:48Now, had our honored guest played politics, he might have worked his way up to commissioner or mayor or even fire chief.
02:01However, Captain Jim Hadley chose the hard way.
02:07He worked untiringly, and those of you in the department will never forget him for his cooperation, his friendship, and his fearlessness.
02:16And now that he's been pensioned, he can look forward to a well-earned life of ease.
02:20And I know that I speak for all of us when I wish Jim the best of everything.
02:25On behalf of the boys of your company, I have the pleasure of presenting you with this token.
02:31Good luck, Captain Hadley.
02:36And may all your troubles be false alarms.
02:42You have no idea, Frank, how glad I am that Dad has been retired.
02:47I suppose you want to say a few words.
02:49I appreciate this.
02:54I'm sorry it's because I'm leaving the department.
02:57It's been my very life.
02:59I've enjoyed every minute of it.
03:02But they say that when a man becomes my age, he's outlived his usefulness.
03:11But I'm a lucky man.
03:13I've made many good friends, and most of you are here.
03:15It's my fervent prayer that I may keep those friendships, even though I'm going to become a gentleman of leisure.
03:30I'm really a good after-dinner speaker, but I'm handicapped this time because I haven't had my dinner yet.
03:45Stop that noise!
04:11Stop ringing that bell!
04:17My husband's asleep!
04:20Where is it? Where is it?
04:21Any scissors or knives you want sharpened, lady?
04:24No, we don't want any.
04:27All right.
04:28All right, back to bed, darling.
04:39It was just a man wanting to sharpen scissors.
04:42Oh.
04:43I forgot I was a gentleman of leisure.
04:46Ah, you'll get used to it.
04:48Just think, you haven't a thing in the world to do but take it easy.
04:52I have a title to arrest, huh?
04:59Oh, you certainly are, darling.
05:01Oh, and you can start right now by taking that trunk up to the attic.
05:06Great start.
05:15There.
05:16The boys are polishing the brass on the hook and ladder about now.
05:26Did you read the mornin' paper?
05:28Yeah.
05:29Why don't you tell me on the radio?
05:31No programs I want to listen to.
05:35Can I help?
05:35Oh, sure.
05:36What's funny?
05:47Just think about the gang.
05:49All the things they've got to do, and here I am taking it easy.
05:53Oh, I take it easy in the other room, will you, darling?
05:58Yeah.
06:07Omar.
06:09What about playing a little casino with me?
06:12What did you say?
06:13What about playing a little casino with me?
06:16Oh, don't be silly, Jim.
06:17You know I'm busy.
06:36Pardon me.
06:43If you don't know what to do with yourself, take those jars down to the basement.
06:58I wouldn't take too many if I were you.
07:00Ah, nothing to it.
07:06Jim, did you break all my preserves?
07:13No, but I will.
07:31I'll answer, Ma.
07:36Good morning, madam.
07:41I mean, sir.
07:43I represent the magnificent wash company.
07:45We carry a full line of washers.
07:47How do you do?
07:48Come right in.
07:49I'm glad to see you.
07:50Make yourself a home, huh?
07:51Every good home should have a rewireable wash in them.
07:55We have the most rewireable washers, and once you apply them, you will be a steady customer.
08:00There.
08:01Sit right down there and have a chair.
08:03You have your hat.
08:05These things, too, huh?
08:07Oh, well.
08:09I thought you might like to buy a wash.
08:12You sure I'm not intruding?
08:14Oh, no.
08:15Oh, no, no, no.
08:16You see, I was kind of lonesome, and the wife threw me out of the kitchen again.
08:19Again?
08:20Yeah.
08:21She's been doing it all day, ever since I got up this morning and put out a fire.
08:25But there wasn't any fire, so I stayed home.
08:27I think I'd better be going.
08:29Oh, what's your hurry?
08:30What's your hurry?
08:30You just came.
08:32You see, I'm on a pension.
08:35The boys threw a big party last night, and the chief spoke.
08:38And my best friend tore up my speech.
08:43I wish you could have been there.
08:46Ain't just the same.
08:47But I had a date.
08:49Oh, that's too bad.
08:50You sell those things?
08:53Yeah.
08:54Here we have number two, our housewives, Dwight.
08:57You know, it must be awfully interesting.
09:00You meet all kinds of people, all sorts of guests, huh?
09:04Yeah.
09:05All sorts.
09:07Hello, Ma.
09:08We don't want any.
09:12Hey, wait a minute, wait a minute.
09:13Jim, why, you should know better than let one of those salesmen into the house.
09:17They'll talk an arm off you.
09:19Oh, but he's different.
09:20He hardly said a word.
09:22You were busy, and I had nothing to do, and it was nice to have someone to talk to.
09:26Why don't you take a walk?
09:27It's a lovely day.
09:28Go on.
09:29The exercise will do you good.
09:30That's an idea.
09:34Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear.
09:37Well, well, well, look who's coming our way.
09:41If it isn't the boy orator.
09:43I'm accustomed as I am to public speaking.
09:46Hi, slaves.
09:51How does it feel to be a gentleman of leisure, Jim?
09:53Nothing like it.
09:54It's great.
09:55In about six months, you'll know.
09:57Do you think the chief will give me a send-off?
09:59If he does, I'll tear up your speech and cram it down your throat.
10:03Make him eat his own words, huh, Jim?
10:06Say, how about a game of peanut before Briggs here gets too funny?
10:09Oh, I don't know.
10:11How much time?
10:12Well, all right, all right.
10:14Come on, we'll all have a good night.
10:20How are you, fellas?
10:21Hi, Jeff.
10:22Couldn't stay away, eh?
10:23Yeah, I'll beat the pants off.
10:25Oh, yeah.
10:28I'll deal.
10:29All right, but from the top.
10:30Yeah.
10:30You're not superstitious about my sitting in front of you, are you?
10:54No, no, sure.
10:55Of course not.
10:56No, of course not.
10:57Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
11:27A hundred and fifty trumps, a hundred aces, sixty queens, my luck and alarm has to come in.
11:57A hundred and fifty-five.
12:03And a hundred and fifty-five.
12:12And a hundred and fifty-five.
12:23Attack me! Come on! Hurry up!
12:32Take me to the fire! Step on it!
12:53Keep that line up. Keep that line up.

13:23Over. Over. Over. Over. Over!
13:49It's all.
13:50I'm just finishing the claim that part of the house back $80,000 I adore you honey that's
14:00quite a loss yes it is I think you're gorgeous Mr Stevens wants you to investigate it right
14:06away well guess our little things over see you later and don't be late I won't.
14:50I put you two fellas on the job because I wanted some action and all I get is more fires look
15:13lieutenant we're doing all we can the chemical analysis of the room show that each fire was
15:17started with gasoline I know that and we have every reason to believe the time bombs are
15:22used stop it stop it will you Roberts the next thing I know you guys will be giving me weather
15:26reports I want that fire bug and I want him right away.
15:31Thank you speaking yes your honor yes we're doing all we can we're working on several clues the
15:41chemical analysis of the ruins showed that all fires were started with gasoline and we have
15:47every reason to believe that time bombs were used I'm not out of buying I'm doing everything I can to
15:55catch the fire bug I've just had the boys on the carpet yes sir yes sir goodbye there's always two sides
16:06every carpet a lieutenant oh I know you fellas are loafing on the job but well this thing's got me all upset
16:14come on Roberts before he has a nervous breakdown this is getting serious I have Henderson and Roberts of the
16:23Arson squad coming in to see you I'll see them as soon as they get here all right I don't miss me I don't remember
16:34I used to be here steady but I guess I wasn't steady enough is that right Frank fortunately for me
16:39mr. Stevens and yes good
16:46how are you Henderson all pretty good
16:47your company got nicked for the hotel didn't they yes and for the warehouse too we suspected arson and
16:55then we worked on the revenge motive until all the rest of these fires broke up then we realized we
16:59were on the wrong track I still believe they're professional fire bugs doing it for the insurance
17:04funny they all got the same idea at the same time you guys can kid yourselves if you want to but all
17:09those fires have been started by someone who does it for the thrill of it a pyromaniac yep and the cat's one of
17:15those crazy guys is just a question of luck the police nablin up north last week well he hung around
17:20the fires were put out didn't want to miss any of the excitement some don't do that I can't understand
17:25how any person can willfully cause so much property damage endanger the lives of men women and even
17:32children just for their own satisfaction well they do the kick in their mind seems to make them clever
17:38they're strange people all the ones that come in contact with were mild-mannered wouldn't hurt a
17:42fly but as soon as they see flames they go crazy got any ideas no mr stevens i'll have to check with
17:49the police again well i'd do something if i were you wait a minute stevens it's no use taking it out
17:53on frank i've got a job to protect and it isn't my business to investigate fires that's frank's job
18:01all right do what you wanted to do and hurry yes mr stevens
18:04sorry i can't take you to lunch got some business to take care of well i'll walk as far as the
18:14restaurant with you so i'll
18:35worrying won't do any good everything will be all right i hope you're right honey
18:39i've admired that for a long time and when i'm married that's exactly the kind of silverware i'm
18:52going to have in my home whose home ours dear well they are nice say there's an interesting piece
19:02of work that statue of Vulcan Vulcan yeah ever study Roman mythology yes but i can't place that uh
19:10little man well my dear he just happens to be the god of fire
19:17i still like my salt and pepper set come on
19:32i've promised to fix your shoulder for a long time i'll do it now
19:57i guess you're to blame a Vulcan
20:02it now
20:13fire beautiful fire
20:25an argument with frank
20:27oh no mother
20:29i'm terribly worried mr stevens is so unfair you'd think frank we're neglecting his job
20:34now arson isn't easy to pin on anyone especially when you have a pyromaniac to deal with
20:39well maybe you could help dad you've had so much experience remember me i've retired
20:46the arson squad's on the job the police on the lookout and frank has got to go then you haven't any
20:51suggestion no my dear don't forget i'm not in the service anymore i've outlived my usefulness
20:58you reach the age limit dad age limit what a laugh one day i'm valuable to the department next i'm an old
21:04man why i'm just as active as i was 10 years ago and i've worked side by side with men that are 20
21:09years younger and i've always done my part now i've reached the age limit and they've retired me
21:16they want me to sit around twiddle my thumbs they've got youth in the department
21:20let them worry about the fires fire bugs i don't care if the whole city burns down
21:36so
21:50so
22:06Find anything interesting now that's where the fire started though what is it what a
22:22minute that looks like part of a time clock.
22:36There will be more fires, great fires high into the heavens.
22:51They think you're the god of fire, but no, I am.
23:06See it's great, Bert, you know, take it easy like this.
23:19Of course, I miss you and the boys, but I can always drop in and see you.
23:22Oh, yeah, just to make us envious, eh?
23:25You know me better than that.
23:27Yeah, you're just the type to rub it in.
23:31Maybe I am putting on a little bit, but won't be long before you're doing the same thing, you know.
23:36Oh. Going someplace, huh?
23:40Yeah, with you.
23:42Say, you know the very first thing we're going to do when I get my pension?
23:46Yeah. Going on a fine fishing trip.
23:49And boy, there's the spot.
23:51Gee, that's all right, huh?
23:53Say, just as soon as the hunting season is open, why, we'll just give this joint the once-over.
23:57Maybe I can get to use the gun you gave me eight years ago for a birthday present.
24:01Sure.
24:03Wait for me here, Jim. I've got some other ideas. I'll be right back.
24:24I'll be good.
24:27I'll be right back.
24:29But I'm yes, and that's kind of imp honourable, honey.
24:32But I'm not sure what makes it look like.
24:35To be right, Mr. Carrick, look for the next that died...
24:40I'll be right back.
24:41Yes. What. What's that. Where. OK. To the warehouse boys 10th and Maine. Here we go again.

29:27that you might. I look forward to the pensioners. We will have a grand time together you and me. Just a couple of
29:37gentlemen at leisure that's us. Yes. Of course. All you got to do is take care of yourself.
29:57Good afternoon miss. I'd like to see the salt and pepper set in the window. Of course.
30:17Are these the ones you mean. Yes. They're lovely. How much are they. They're just ten dollars.
30:25There's a dent in this one. Really. Oh I'd be most happy to fix it for you. But I'll take them.
30:33You don't mind delivering them. Not at all. My name is Miss Hadley. Miss Hadley.
30:381488. 1488. Comstock. Comstock. Thank you very much Miss Hadley. Yes.

31:22Got to go back on duty.
31:24There's anything we can do with.
31:25Oh no thank you for dropping in.
31:28We let ourselves out.
31:30Goodbye Jim.
31:40Well Frank in mind if I worked with him.
31:42Of course not dad.
31:47I'd be able to help Henderson too huh.
31:48Oh I'm sure you could.
31:54I'll see what is.
32:01Hello.
32:02Hello Frank.
32:04How's your father take it.
32:06You know he's pretty upset.
32:09I'm sorry Mr. Hanley.
32:17That's all right.
32:19Frank I don't know whether you know it or not.
32:21I've had little experience on the arson squad.
32:24Joan and I were thinking I might be of some help.
32:26Fine.
32:27I was going to ask you to give us a hand but.
32:29Well I knew you were retired and all.
32:31This is one job I want to do.
32:33Good.
32:36John see who's there.
32:38Yes mother.
32:39Good evening Miss Hadley I brought the things you wished.
32:49Well thank you.
32:51I'll get the money for you.
32:58I bought that salt and pepper set this afternoon.
33:06I hope I'm not intruding.
33:10Oh.
33:11We've had a terrible shock.
33:13A very dear friend of ours died this afternoon.
33:16May I offer my condolence.
33:21Was your friend ill long.
33:23He was injured in the fire today.
33:25Very unfortunate.
33:29I'll get it.
33:30I'm expecting a call.
33:30Hello.
33:35Yes.
33:36Yes Jack.
33:38They made the time clock didn't they.
33:41I see.
33:43Well it was a clue anyway.
33:44Sorry it didn't work out.
33:47Well we got together in the morning.
33:49We're going to have some expert advice too.
33:51Jim Hadley.
33:51So long I'll be seeing you.
34:02What happened Frank.
34:03It looked like we were getting someplace but this.
34:06Pyromaniac is a little too clever for us.
34:08You said something about time clock.
34:10We found one of the oil fire.
34:11Traced it to the manufacturer but it was among those stolen from the warehouse.
34:14So we're no better off than we were before.
34:21Thanks.
34:32I wonder if you could let me have $10 Frank.
34:34Sure.
34:41I appreciate your bringing up the set.
34:45Good evening.
34:53How about getting together the first thing in the morning.
34:54Sooner the better.
34:56Good night.
34:57Good night dear.
34:58Night.
35:02Where King go.
35:03I don't know.
35:04The way things are I wouldn't be surprised if he's taking out more insurance on this building.
35:08We got to do something.
35:09Maybe one of us should arrest the other as a suspect.
35:15Hello Captain.
35:16Oh I don't know what Jack told me you're going to give us a hand.
35:19What makes it so difficult to catch a man we want is that apparently has no motives and you can't tell where he's going to pop up next.
35:25Where was this piece of time clock found at the oil tanks.
35:28All right yeah.
35:29I'd like to take a look around.
35:33Okay.
35:42I picked it up right about here.
35:43What set off a charge of dynamite.
35:48Trace of oraline here.
35:49Oraline.
35:51Yeah a rare fluid used to spread flames after an explosion.
35:53Let's have the wood analyzed.
35:55That's good.
35:58Lampard's had enough time to build a house with that piece of wood.
36:02We use the spectroscope a very effective instrument for this type of work.
36:06Yes I know.
36:07There was one man who shot burn put in a claim for silver foxes.
36:10But by using this instrument we discovered he had substituted rabbit skins for the foxes just before the fire.
36:17Well.
36:18It's Halloween all right lieutenant.
36:20And the water the fine grade of maple.
36:22Then get a list of all places selling Oraline right away.
36:24Yes sir.
36:25Trace down that wood.
36:26Now we're getting somewhere.
36:33You don't remember anybody who bought a small quantity of white maple.
36:36Are you sure you have no record of it.
36:40It's very important.
36:43Can't you remember.
36:46Think hard.
36:47When was he here last.
36:48What does he look like.
36:50Where does he live.
36:52He remembered making about 20 little boxes for this man.
36:55And described him as a medium build on about 40.
36:59But couldn't give me any idea as to who he was or where he lived.
37:02What do you do pick up the boxes at the lumber company.
37:04And if he's as smart as I think he is he won't go back there again.
37:13Thought they could trace that clock a.
37:17Now Vulcan you should see for yourself how I destroy.
37:34Go back.
37:37Go back.
37:40And until then go.
37:44Go back.
37:53By the way.
37:54You're doing it now, Mother.
38:14Your father should have been home hours ago.
38:17Don't worry.
38:18You know Dad, when he gets his mind set on something.
38:21Oh, I know it is.
38:22Jim.
38:22Sorry, I'm late.
38:24Why didn't you telephone me so I'd know you were all right?
38:27I was busy.
38:29Is there anything neat in the house?
38:30I'll fix something for you.
38:31Coffee and sandwich will do.
38:35Jim, darling, I know how important this job is to you,
38:40but you've just got to take care of yourself.
38:42I'm all right, Mom.
38:46We were going hunting.
38:48Fish.
38:48I wish I could lay my hands on the miserable...
38:53Hello.
39:21Hello.
39:22Hello.
39:23Mr. Hadley there.
39:24Yes I'll tell him.
39:26Hold the line please.
39:28Your sandwich is ready then.
39:30OK.
39:31Jim it's for you.
39:32Oh.
39:34Hello.
39:35Oh Captain.
39:37Yes.
39:38Yes Jack.
39:40I'm leaving right away.
39:43What is it.
39:44The warehouse fire.
39:45But you haven't eaten anything.
39:46I'm not hungry dear.
39:48Oh dear.
39:50Oh.
39:51Oh.
39:52Oh.
39:53Oh.
39:56Oh.
39:57Oh.
39:58Oh.
40:00Oh, my God.
40:30Now, Bert, you may see for yourself one.
40:50But...
40:52Oh, my God.
41:22I thought I'd lost.
41:45Well, Captain, it looks like another one of those things.
41:57A fire.
42:03A beautiful fire.
42:07They say the world will be destroyed by fire.
42:11And they're right.
42:11I'll destroy it.
42:14Oh, good evening, Mr. Adley.
42:38Hello.
42:40Evidently, your company didn't insure the warehouse.
42:43Fortunately not.
42:44I'll fix you something to eat, dear.
42:46Don't bother.
42:46I grabbed a bite on the way home.
42:48Where's your mother?
42:49I need to go to bed.
42:50Good girl.
42:51No luck, eh?
42:53A pyromaniac is the hardest criminal in the world to catch.
42:56And this one left no clues whatever.
42:58I hope to catch him at the fire.
43:00I must have looked at a thousand faces for the giveaway sign, you know?
43:03The wild, scary expression of the firebug.
43:06Oh.
43:06Like the antique man that was here.
43:09What'd you say?
43:11Well, you remember the man from the antique store?
43:13Yes, the fellow who brought the salt and pepper shakers.
43:16Yeah.
43:17Well, when I let him match for Frank, he stared at us in the strangest way.
43:22Like he was fascinated?
43:24Yes, Dad.
43:25At the time, I thought it was peculiar, but, oh, well, I had other things on my mind.
43:30I don't suppose he has anything to do with the fire.
43:33Say, he did seem interested in what was going on.
43:34You remember, he asked questions.
43:36You know anything about him?
43:37Not much.
43:38He runs a shop near the office.
43:39Has all sorts of old things there.
43:41Statues of mythological characters.
43:43He has one of Mars, another of Vulcan.
43:45Vulcan?
43:46Yes, the god of fire.
43:48Hmm, god of fire.
43:50A symbol a pyromaniac might use.
43:53What does this Vulcan look like?
43:55Oh, he's a statue.
43:57Stands on a pedestal.
43:58About that high.
43:58Mm-hmm.
43:59Holds a hammer in one hand.
44:00Face looks up.
44:02I found one when I got out of the fire and put it in my car.
44:05And when I got home, it was gone.
44:06Now, that may have had no connection with the pyromaniac.
44:10Nevertheless, I think we ought to look at the one that the antique man has.
44:13Sure.
44:14It's kind of late, Dad.
44:15Never mind, you're pretty ahead about that.
44:18We'll go in my car.
44:19All right.
44:19Good night, darling.
44:20Well...
44:20Looks exactly like it.
44:25Well looks like you like it that's the only reproduction of
44:45Vulcan I've seen since I left school one way to meet the car OK.

45:06shop here thank you and I see that statue in the window statue yeah the one

45:18of mine he left it with me before he went abroad oh that's too bad yeah I'm
45:23making a collection of statues and I'd like to add that one to it how about
45:26making a copy I'm afraid that will not be possible you see my client would not
45:31permit that.
45:33Oh well I guess we can do any business not for the present I'm afraid not thanks
45:40dropping in Mr. Hadley good night sir good night.
45:55Any luck didn't strike me quite right however he gave me a pretty good reason for not selling it to me.

46:11Yeah.
46:31John.
46:33John I wonder if Mr. Jameson is at home.
46:36Well I could find out why mother.
46:37Well I'm a little bit of a sense.
46:40I thought maybe he wouldn't mind dropping over.
46:42Well I'll call him.
46:43Oh.
47:07The phone's dead.
47:11I guess the wind must have blown the wires down.
47:13Why John.
47:14Oh now mother.
47:16Oh.
47:17Here let me get you another cup of coffee.

48:28What sit down please.
48:31Hi Captain I thought I fired but might come back here we got a report just a moment ago that he was seen in the Mayfair district but the lieutenant told me to stick around here.
48:50Mayfair district pretty close to home.

49:15Candlesticks.
49:17No I'm afraid not Miss Hadley.
49:20It's unfortunate that your father became so interested in my affairs.
49:26Unfortunate for you.
49:29Unfortunate for your mother.
49:30I don't understand you will presently.
49:37I think it's a surprise for you.

50:08I shouldn't try to escape if I were you.
50:11What did you mean.
50:11It's really too bad Mr. Hadley became curious.
50:16She didn't have enough intelligence to mind his own business.
50:38What have you done.
