00:00Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin. Teenage roofer Gabriella Day is hitting the
00:06heights in a male-dominated industry after being named the country's best apprentice.
00:11Gabriella, from Old Whittington and Chesterfield, is among fewer than a dozen women across England
00:16who have chosen roofing as a career. Her enthusiasm for working at Dalton Roofing
00:21has been honoured with the nation's A-Star Trades Apprentice Award 2025.
00:26Her most recent jobs have been a garage extension in Drumfield and a bay window in Sheffield.
00:32Gabriella said,
00:33We've worked quite a lot on factories and three or four storey houses.
00:37When I first started I did a re-roof on an office building on Chatsworth Road in Chesterfield.
00:42I absolutely love heights and I like the fact you can see the views from a roof.
00:46As a kid I used to love roller coasters and the heights never fazed me.
00:50Commenting on Gabriella's win, her boss Phil Dalton said,
00:54I'm really proud for her. It's good for Chesterfield and it's good for Derbyshire.
00:58There are not many lady roofers in the entire country
01:01and to have an award-winning one in Derbyshire is incredible.
