00:00A little light listening this morning on the Preston and Steve show.
00:09That's actually the new theme to 60 Minutes.
00:11With Disturbed and I just hear, no longer be your whore.
00:18All righty then.
00:20Mike Schmidt, you know, Hall of Famer, baseball player, and just a god in this town, was in
00:26our studio one time, and the song that we were playing was, as we were getting ready to
00:30introduce him, was Godsmack, the song Crying Like a Bitch.
00:34And it's just like, I'm crying like a bitch!
00:36Just screaming, and I look over at Mike Schmidt is just sitting there with his headphones on.
00:40Where the hell am I?
00:41And now we're playing Disturbed with just screaming, and I look over at Terry Crews is sitting right
00:45there with his headphones on, just pretending like he's having a good time.
00:49No, no, I really liked it.
00:50No longer be your whore.
00:53Yeah, man, I was getting into it, man.
00:55Let's welcome Terry Crews.
00:59How you doing, man?
01:00I was into it.
01:02I'm ready to do another workout.
01:04Did you already get one in this morning?
01:06I already got one in.
01:07Of course.
01:07Wow, man.
01:07Of course.
01:08Yeah, I love it.
01:09Terry, we were laughing this morning because you posted a picture of you on your Twitter
01:13page, Preston and I, and someone had said that you resembled a chewed up Tootsie Roll.
01:16Yes!
01:18That was so funny.
01:19And you posted the picture, and it was just hilarious.
01:21Well, they said, now that they, and they put it down, that they couldn't unsee it.
01:25And then, what was weird is, I couldn't unsee it either.
01:28I was like, all right, that looks just like me.
01:32A chewed up Tootsie Roll.
01:34I'm trying to tell you.
01:35It looks like, if you haven't seen the picture yet, it looks like if you were in, if you
01:39were in, uh, uh, with the Star Wars movie where they froze, uh, uh, on solar.
01:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:45Carbonite.
01:45Carbonite.
01:46Yeah, yeah.
01:46If you were to freeze Terry Crews in carbonite.
01:48Oh, my God.
01:49So, we were thinking, it's safe to say you were in the pantheon of favorite guests we've
01:54ever had on the show.
01:55Yeah.
01:55Constantly referred to.
01:57And the career just keeps going along.
02:00Obviously, your AGT now is a big thing.
02:03Yes.
02:03I'll be honest, I was never that much into the, the AGT thing.
02:07And then, but your zeal, your excitement for it is, is so infectious.
02:12And now we've known people like John Dorenbos and other people who've gone through the system.
02:17And it is, you will see some wild stuff on that show.
02:22So I, uh, you know, uh, you, through you, you curated it and I'm like, okay, we can, we,
02:27I'll jump back in and check it out.
02:28So I watch it.
02:30What, what draws you to that show?
02:31What, what, what do you, cause you are clearly.
02:33We exhilarated by it.
02:34This is the thing.
02:35First of all, when you look at what entertainment is, uh, the 18 to 35 year olds have gotten
02:42too much clop.
02:44I'll be honest with you.
02:45You're like, okay, man, there's a big world.
02:48And you know, the 18 to 35, that's it.
02:51They determine what's hot, what's not.
02:54You're like, no, no, not at all.
02:56If you had a family, you understand that your kids, the ones under 18 are the ones that determining
03:02everything.
03:02And then the ones over 35 are the ones that are paying for everything.
03:06So I said, I have to serve all of them.
03:10Yeah.
03:10And that is what I was determined to do.
03:13I started hosting a few years back when I was hosting, who wants to be a millionaire?
03:17I want, this is the deal too, because it really, really satisfies me because I do not, when
03:23I perform now on movies and TV, I have no audience.
03:27There's nothing.
03:28And I, the adrenaline that comes from when I was in the NFL, it's really replaced by AGT.
03:35The crowd noise, the energy, the fact that anything can happen when it's live, man.
03:40And you get to go live.
03:42No, it's live.
03:43Look, we get the, I get the keys to NBC for two hours.
03:47And they're like, look, bring it back in one piece.
03:50Don't break it.
03:52Don't dent it.
03:53And watch out when you're backing up with it.
03:55You know what I mean?
03:56And basically you got to bring it back in the same condition or better.
04:01And it's so, you realize anything can go wrong and I love it.
04:04So the other night something went wrong with the, the guy with the crossbows and the levers.
04:09And, and so I, I found myself on the edge of the seat, uh, watching this mistake, these,
04:14these flaws, because not everybody that comes on AGT does it perfectly.
04:18No, they don't.
04:19So, so for people who aren't watching, what happened?
04:21Oh my God.
04:21Well, yeah.
04:22I mean, the guy thought he had set his trap, he set his whole, his arrows right.
04:28And the whole thing.
04:28And he realized he was nervous and he strapped in.
04:32Yes.
04:32Yeah.
04:32He was nervous and he didn't do it right.
04:35Dude.
04:35But this was so wild, man.
04:37And you start to realize, and my thing is always talking to the acts and trying to talk
04:42them through so that they can be at a relaxed.
04:45Right.
04:45Because the deal is.
04:46Easier said than done though, right?
04:47It is.
04:48Yeah.
04:48Because everyone makes you, they make you nervous.
04:50They're, I had one guy, I'm going to, I'm going to tell something right now.
04:53It's crazy.
04:54I was doing this movie blended with, with Adam Sandler down in South Africa.
04:57You were, you were great as the, the singer and a Calypso guy.
05:01It was awesome.
05:02But see, one person can mess up your whole world.
05:05Right.
05:06I remember I was brought to do the scene, the whole thing.
05:09And we only had a few minutes to do the scene where we were losing light and the whole
05:12thing.
05:12And the director of photography, I don't want to mention his name, but he walked up to
05:17me and he said, don't F up.
05:20Huh.
05:21Now, when you said, I'm going, huh?
05:24Now, that's the worst thing you can say to anyone, but thank God I knew to counteract
05:31that.
05:32And I said, don't take it.
05:33Don't take it.
05:34In fact, use it as fuel.
05:35Right.
05:36In fact, focus, get inside, come inside more.
05:39And I jammed and the whole thing.
05:41And I did the, you know, we did the thing with the choir and we were singing and doing the
05:45whole thing.
05:45And I looked at it and he was like, that was pretty amazing.
05:48And I was literally like, F you.
05:52Believe me, I could not believe he would have the nerve to do that.
05:56So I realized what I wanted to do with all these acts is be the anti-that.
06:02Come in there and tell him, you got this, man.
06:04You can do it.
06:05It's okay.
06:06But he just got so nervous.
06:07He didn't turn the safeties off.
06:08He didn't turn the safeties off.
06:10And you got real people and he's standing there in front of it.
06:12And then you got Alicia.
06:14And she's wondering whether should I press the button or not.
06:17She could have killed somebody.
06:18It's really nuts.
06:19The acts are like that.
06:21There are some and there have been some injuries, but that's the real deal.
06:24What sort of blows my mind is what they're using the theater.
06:29There was a dance act that was using projection or something like virtual dance.
06:34And I mean, it was...
06:35Freckled Sky.
06:36It was as theatrical and Broadway level that I've ever seen.
06:41How much time did they get...
06:43Because that had to be live.
06:44How much time did you get to set something like that up?
06:46Oh, my God.
06:47First of all, the crew on America's Got Talent has been underrated and not appreciated enough.
06:55This is literally like putting on the Oscars every week.
06:59It's the biggest live show on television, period.
07:02And it's the biggest talent show in the world.
07:04So they're the best in the business, man.
07:06And any mistake, it could all go wrong.
07:08They do it so good.
07:10It's like...
07:12People think that, you know, it's just a given or whatever.
07:16But, man, when you watch this crew and as well as they do it...
07:19You talk about roadies and all this stuff.
07:22It's not like it's one act that's on for two hours.
07:25Because it's the thing, this guy...
07:26I don't know, to explain it, Preston, the dancers at some one point look like they're marionettes.
07:31Yes.
07:31Faux strings coming down.
07:33And, I mean, there's a whole bunch of stuff going on.
07:35Precision stuff.
07:36Well, I feel like a circus master.
07:38Right, right.
07:38You know what I mean?
07:38And that's what I love.
07:39Because I come from also the days of the variety show, right?
07:43Listen, Carol Burnett was one of my favorite shows of all time.
07:47And I miss that, man.
07:49I wanted to bring that back.
07:50And I'm not a comedian, but at the same time, this energy, this love, I want to be this guy.
07:59And to get this opportunity is the biggest thing in the world for me.
08:02I think for the entertainers and, like, John Dornbus has told us what the whole experience was like and the whole deal.
08:08And, obviously, there's the background story, which plays into it and the emotion and all that stuff.
08:14So, for some reason, it works.
08:15It's the oldest Ted Maxx amateur hour that goes back for, you know, decades.
08:20Ed Sullivan.
08:20Yeah, Ed Sullivan, where these people come out and spin dishes and all that stuff.
08:24What, talking about, like, the act with the arrows and all that stuff, what was the one act you thought, okay, this guy's going to die?
08:33Yeah.
08:33What was the one where you thought, this guy's coming out in a body bag?
08:37Oh, there are several.
08:39I'm trying to say, which one?
08:41Some of these that are coming up, there was a guy who was in a water tank, and I thought, you know, he was.
08:49What, like the Houdini thing?
08:50It's just like he did a Houdini-ish deal, man.
08:52And I said, man, and then it didn't look like things were happening right.
08:56You could tell when his assistants start running.
08:59You're like, oh, man.
09:01I just, first of all, you don't want anything to go wrong because it ruins, it could, you know, you don't want to watch anybody die on live TV.
09:08You just don't want to do it.
09:09Would you want to be a judge?
09:11Do you think you could do it?
09:12No.
09:13No, I don't.
09:14The judging thing is super, super hard, man.
09:17And I think so, especially with the appeal of AGT is the variety of acts you're going to get.
09:22You got dance, you got, you know, magic, comedians, song, all this difference.
09:26But how do you compare those things as far as talent goes?
09:29I'd have a really hard time.
09:30And I think some of the judges have harder times.
09:33I think Simon and Howie are probably the most well-rounded judges.
09:38I've seen Heidi not get jokes.
09:42And because she doesn't get a joke, she gets offended by it.
09:45Right.
09:45You know, it's hard.
09:47But let me tell you one thing.
09:48I got to tell you this.
09:49The reason we have judges is because America wants blood.
09:53Yeah.
09:53I'm just telling you.
09:55First of all, how can you compare a singer to a dancer to a danger act?
10:02Well, we know.
10:02How can you do that?
10:04The end result is, this is the way I've always framed it.
10:07To me, you're looking for somebody who would be a successful Las Vegas act.
10:11Right.
10:12And that's the context, correct?
10:14That's the context.
10:15Right.
10:15But at the same time, this stuff is subjective.
10:18Right.
10:18Yeah.
10:18What show do you see in Vegas?
10:20It's the show you want to see.
10:22Right.
10:22Right.
10:22Yeah.
10:22So, you know, I mean, if you want to see singers, you love singers.
10:25If you want to go to a dance show, you go to a dance show.
10:28So, the deal is, is that America wants someone to lose.
10:31Yeah.
10:32America wants you bleeding.
10:34And they don't care if you're under 10.
10:37And listen, first of all, I love it.
10:39I love America.
10:40But it's the sports mentality.
10:42No.
10:42It literally is, you, someone has to go home.
10:46And that makes you tune in.
10:49But if they were like, there's really no competition.
10:51It's all exhibition.
10:52They'd be like, nobody dying here.
10:54I'm not going to watch this.
10:55Could you imagine your life without the foundation that you had in sports and all that that's trained you for?
11:03I mean, it seems to provide, provided you with a Swiss army knife of capabilities that's gotten you through.
11:08I remember when I first saw you, I thought, and I have to be honest, who is this meathead?
11:12Who is this guy?
11:13Who is this guy?
11:13And then I go, why is this meathead so funny?
11:15And then I'm like, why is this guy?
11:16And this, why is this?
11:17And then I realized this guy's talented.
11:20But you said you weren't funny to, you weren't a comedian or so on and so forth.
11:23It seems to me you, okay, this is something I got to take on and tackle and work through.
11:29Sports had to be just an absolute essential part of what made you you.
11:33You know, first of all, it was, simply because in the locker room, it's like all versions of humanity.
11:41You know what I mean?
11:42I was funnier in the locker room than I ever was on these shows.
11:45We had so much fun hanging in the locker room and just bawling and hanging and talking and really doing our thing.
11:53And the sport itself, however, a lot of that drama came with baggage.
11:58You know what I mean?
11:59And my thing is, sports is good until it isn't.
12:03It's literally one of those things where, first of all, I love sports.
12:08I love entertainment.
12:09But I love people more.
12:11And when you use people in expense of the sport, like right now the NFL is going through a thing where all the older guys are going through it.
12:19And they're not helping them.
12:21There's so many guys that need help, man, mentally, physically.
12:25The NFL will literally deny that they caused these issues.
12:31You know what I mean?
12:31And my thing is, just admit it, man.
12:34And let's just help them.
12:35Right.
12:35But my deal is, you know, it's one of those things where I had to get rid of a lot of things that was bad and keep the good.
12:45Yeah.
12:45And sports can be very, very good.
12:47But if it's used in the wrong way, man, you will end up miserable.
12:51I believe it.
12:52One of the things, speaking of being talented, that we really weren't aware of was your artistic ability.
12:57And it was one of the, before even sports, right?
13:01I mean, you were sketch and painting.
13:04And were you a court sketch artist?
13:07Court sketch artist, yes.
13:07Get out of here.
13:08I had an art scholarship before I had a football scholarship.
13:10Wow.
13:11I was looking at some of your stuff.
13:12It's really good.
13:13And why is it that court sketch room artists are usually so terrible?
13:18Yes, they are.
13:20A lot of it, you have to be fast.
13:22Yeah.
13:23But at the same time, you have to understand, too, you know, for me, I would have went the whole art route, but no one was going to pay for that.
13:33Like, starving artists is a real thing.
13:36Starving goes right before artists.
13:38I mean, name an artist who actually got paid while he was alive.
13:41Yeah.
13:41Very, very rare.
13:42Right, they're celebrated after they found him in the street somewhere.
13:45Oh, yeah, you've been there 30 years.
13:46They're like, oh, now he gets a million.
13:48You're like, oh.
13:48Do you create every day?
13:49Yeah.
13:50I sketch all the time.
13:51Okay.
13:51Sketch all the time.
13:52What do you prefer?
13:53What is your favorite?
13:55People.
13:55I love sketching faces.
13:57Okay.
13:57Faces.
13:57But sketching over painting and all that?
13:59Oh, yeah.
14:00You know, I just sketch because I have time for it, but I'll take it all the way.
14:03I mean, I will go do a full painting if I have time to do that.
14:07But when I would get cut from an NFL team, I would go back in the locker room and ask
14:11the players if they want their portraits painted.
14:13That's what I would do.
14:14Oh, my God.
14:14And that's how I survive.
14:15Wow.
14:16They would be like, man, you're pretty good, man.
14:185,000.
14:19But you know what?
14:19I would live.
14:20Are you self-taught?
14:21No, I'm self-taught.
14:22Wow.
14:22But I would literally trick the guys.
14:24I'd be like, man, you need a painting.
14:27Look at you.
14:27You're one of the most amazing players ever.
14:30Look at you.
14:31Walking around here all muscular and beautiful.
14:35Let me immortalize you.
14:37Yeah, you know you're right, man.
14:39It's 5,000 dollars.
14:41Splatterable.
14:43You're a lefty.
14:44Marketing.
14:45You're a lefty, too.
14:46Oh, yeah.
14:47Left-handed, right-brained.
14:48I mean, very creative.
14:50It's just my thing, man.
14:52It's always been my thing.
14:53I taught a class at Facebook.
14:57That was a photo from when I taught a class at Facebook.
15:00And you know what was wild?
15:01Some of the most talented people in the world.
15:04And they were sitting there.
15:06And these guys had degrees from everywhere.
15:08And I asked them to start drawing, and they wouldn't do it.
15:11Yeah.
15:11And I was like, dude, you know what's happening?
15:13What's happening is you're judging your work immediately.
15:16And what you got to know is all judgment stops creativity in its tracks.
15:20You have to just go.
15:22Right.
15:23And you have to do it.
15:24And you have to not care what people think.
15:26You have to not.
15:27But what happened was they were like, before they started putting a pen down on the paper,
15:31they would look over at the other guy.
15:32Yeah, right.
15:32They would look over at the other guy.
15:34But this is what we do in life.
15:35Yeah, you're right.
15:36This is the mistake we make all the time.
15:38The stuff you always wanted to do.
15:40All the things you wanted to go for.
15:42You're over there looking at everybody else.
15:43Well, I'm not going to try it.
15:46What will everybody say?
15:47You know what?
15:47I don't care.
15:48I realize don't think about what everybody else is saying.
15:52Just go for your gut.
15:53Go for that intuition.
15:55Don't judge yourself.
15:56There are two words I like to use when I find myself facing something I'm not sure I want
16:00to do.
16:00And it's just begin.
16:02Oh, that's good.
16:03Just begin.
16:03Oh, that's good.
16:04That's all you've got to do.
16:05Dude, if you start, all of a sudden things get done.
16:09And you know what?
16:10Because I'm a great starter.
16:12I am an excellent starter.
16:13But what I had to learn, too, is just, and this is the thing, finish it.
16:18Wait, just get it done.
16:19And then you can always change it.
16:21Because what happens is you get to start and it's not perfect.
16:25So you don't want to finish it.
16:27But no, finish it.
16:28And then you can change it.
16:29Dude, these are things you almost have to hypnotize yourself.
16:32You literally have to get out of your own brain and get out of your own way.
16:36It's funny you say that because I like to sketch as well.
16:39And I'll sketch on the iPad.
16:40And the iPad allows you to undo, undo, undo, undo.
16:43It's almost sort of takes away that, okay, I've got this now.
16:47I've got to work this.
16:49You know, you can correct mistakes all the time.
16:51And it's like, well, it's cool.
16:52It's also sort of a cheat, you know?
16:54Listen, everything I do, I have a mantra.
16:57It's start small, think big.
16:58Right.
16:59Start small, think big.
17:00Okay, just do a little bit.
17:02You know, I'm actually taking Mandarin Chinese lessons right now.
17:05I pick the hardest language to learn.
17:10But I'm getting it.
17:11Yeah, give it something.
17:12Wait, I'm all of a sudden, I'm like, wait a minute, wait a minute.
17:14I've been doing this for like a month.
17:16And I'm like, wait a minute.
17:17That understood that.
17:18When I heard the lady, she was like, whooshia?
17:20And I was like, I know what whooshia means.
17:21Yeah, yeah.
17:22I know what that means, you know?
17:23And so I realized, okay, start small.
17:25You wait.
17:26First of all, I haven't mastered English.
17:28I had to literally look at myself like, have I mastered English?
17:32No.
17:33So if I get to a point where I can tell somebody I'm hungry, and I can tell somebody where's
17:39the bathroom, in Chinese, I'm good.
17:43You know what I mean?
17:44How is one human so talented?
17:46No, no.
17:46Because first of all, it's not even that.
17:49I just keep going.
17:51Like, just try everything you want to do.
17:53And I only do what I want.
17:55But I don't do, if there's something I don't want to do, it's like, don't even worry about
17:59it.
17:59You know what I mean?
17:59You're going to be good.
18:00I'm sorry.
18:01Go ahead.
18:01As I've aged, I've found that I need to be working on something.
18:07I need to be working on something that I can improve upon.
18:10Something that's a bit of a challenge.
18:12And I'm loving it.
18:13I didn't realize this until just a few years ago, whether it be, you know, working on a
18:17golf swing, or I'm a musician, and I want to improve and to keep going on that.
18:23And I love having that.
18:24It's so satisfying.
18:25First of all, listen, you've been talked out of your creativity, man.
18:29You've been told you're not creative.
18:31First of all, like you said, I'm left-handed.
18:33The world is a right-handed world, which deals with math and science.
18:38So all the arts are given as hobbies, but just have your brain.
18:44So you got to, to me, I'm literally telling everybody, be more creative.
18:49Exercise it, because you've been talked out of it a long time ago.
18:52And it's so satisfying.
18:54I mean, I built Legos like crazy.
18:56Yeah.
18:56So speaking of arts and stuff like that, so my daughter's in eighth grade.
19:01She's in school right now, so I can talk about her.
19:02What the arts has done for her has given her the confidence.
19:08Like, so she's in eighth grade, and she's having, like, the best year of her life.
19:11And it's all because of what she's been doing in the theater.
19:14And it's a very, very, like, they just, everybody's nurturing, and everybody, like, loves each other.
19:22And it's just so positive.
19:23But, like, she's getting that from the arts.
19:27That's right.
19:27Yeah.
19:27And she's been playing sports ever since she was, you know, four years old, too.
19:30But look, at the schools, they're taking the instruments out of schools.
19:34Art is given a short shrift.
19:36All this stuff is treated like music and art and whatever.
19:39They're like, do that on your own time.
19:41That's a hobby.
19:42No.
19:42But math and science, if you got that, you're good.
19:44And I think we're severely lacking right now just as a society because we're not creative enough.
19:52This is why we run to Avengers and we run to the movies because we need it so bad.
19:57I mean, all the story, all the content, we need more.
20:01We need more.
20:01Imagine the world without art.
20:04Imagine the world without creativity, without music, without paintings, and what we would be bereft of if we didn't have that.
20:10And to your point about all you have to do is create.
20:12It doesn't matter if it's good.
20:13Just do something, create that, and if it stinks, do the next one.
20:16First of all, that's the world I grew up in.
20:19Factory life.
20:20Flint, Michigan.
20:21Everybody.
20:22They were like, what you doing drawing?
20:24What's that?
20:25Hey, what kind of boy are you?
20:27You're like, hey, man.
20:28Hey, look, I like drawing, okay?
20:30I like music.
20:31I play the flute.
20:32I play the flute.
20:33You know what they would call me?
20:34They were like, why are you playing the flute?
20:35I was like, I'm bigger than you.
20:36I can bitch more than you, so what?
20:37So now what?
20:38And they were like, yeah, you know you're right.
20:40Did you see the Equalizer, the second Equalizer movie?
20:44He's counseling a kid who's an artist.
20:46And I'm like, that's it.
20:48That's right there.
20:49That's just, you know.
20:50I mean, it's going to come out.
20:52This is what the whole graffiti thing is about, man.
20:54And it's like, put it on canvas and sell it.
20:57Yeah, I just think of like, okay, math and science, math and science, math.
21:00But you go to somebody's home now, they don't have microscopes hanging on their wall.
21:05You know what I mean?
21:05No, no, they got like, hey, I play the guitar for, you know, so, you know, math and science,
21:10I don't necessarily, if that's not what you're going to, you're not going to take that wherever
21:14you go, unless, listen, my brother's a chemist.
21:17He's a scientist.
21:17My sister's a math person.
21:19That's fine.
21:19You know what I mean?
21:20Like, so I'm not knocking it.
21:21Right.
21:22Yeah.
21:22But I think make it more equal.
21:24Exactly.
21:25Yeah.
21:25And we would be remiss if we didn't throw some love to Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
21:29Oh, yeah.
21:30Love it.
21:31Casey and I are huge fans of the show.
21:33NBC gave you the new home, which is very cool, which is wonderful.
21:38The show was on the brink of going away and came back, and it is, I think, one of the
21:44sharpest ensembles on television.
21:46Your revelation on the show, as is Andre Brouwer, who's just unbelievable.
21:52So everything, you know, you're up and running.
21:55Yes.
21:55Season seven starts February 6th.
21:57We already have been picked up for season eight.
22:00Nice.
22:01That's the vote of confidence, man.
22:03Why do you think it works so well?
22:04Eight seasons.
22:04It's crazy.
22:05Why do you think it works so well?
22:06Because, you know, we love each other, man.
22:08And this is the greatest thing ever.
22:11One thing, and I'm going to preach right now.
22:13Yeah.
22:14Competition is the opposite of creativity.
22:17The opposite.
22:18We do not compete with each other as a cast.
22:21Right.
22:22When you see a show fall, it's usually because the actors or somebody within it is competing
22:29with each other, and it causes the thing to blow up out of nowhere.
22:33We literally are all operating on our own levels, creating and encouraging each other.
22:40We are a true family, man.
22:41I don't know what else to say.
22:43I mean, everyone gets their moment.
22:45Everybody.
22:45And also, you allow the self-deprecation.
22:50The stuff that they have you doing is hilarious.
22:54I love it.
22:55And again, a lot of people forget, out of the gate, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was sort of the
22:59sweetheart.
23:00It won, I think, the Golden Globe for the best comedy series and so on and so forth.
23:03And then suddenly, I'm like, what the F?
23:06This show is great, and why are they getting rid of it for?
23:09Now, you know, this far into it has got to be the ultimate, you know, acknowledgement.
23:14And also, when you have a fan base, you talk about the connection to the fan base, that
23:18actually was vocally, you know, going after making sure the show came back.
23:24Well, I got something to say.
23:25You know, when you're talking about Nielsen ratings, that's that 18 to 35 and the whole
23:30thing.
23:30But just as a deal, and you want to talk about math and science.
23:33If you really want to get a good gauge on what people are watching, you need a bigger
23:37pie.
23:37But the Nielsen is literally only 5,000 homes.
23:41Yeah.
23:42So, wait a minute.
23:43I'm going, hey, hey.
23:44But let me tell you what happened.
23:46The internet.
23:47Yeah.
23:47The internet spoke for us.
23:49They literally went nuts.
23:51And they got like a hundred million people saying, wait a minute, why did you cancel this
23:57show?
23:58And for NBC to pick us up, man, and give us the love.
24:02Yes.
24:02To give us that kind of love.
24:05What can I say?
24:06And now you're talking about in an era where you get maybe 10 episodes and they call it
24:13two seasons.
24:14You know what I mean?
24:15We're well over 170 episodes.
24:19I mean, literally in the can.
24:20A good friend of the show, Kate Flannery, has appeared on all the shows as well.
24:24Yeah, Kate's great.
24:24And everyone that goes through, it's just great things about the environment on the show.
24:29I also have to bring up the fact you were in Deadpool 2.
24:32Yes.
24:33For a second.
24:33For a second.
24:35Oh, that was a big troll.
24:36We trolled everybody on that one.
24:38What was that like?
24:39Because you, you know, he is so talented, Ryan Reynolds.
24:43Oh, my God.
24:44And we get the impression that there's just a lot of free lines going on right and left.
24:48What was the experience like working on that?
24:50It was an amazing experience because I love Ryan and, but the big thing was, the trick
24:56was we were going to troll everybody.
24:58Yeah, and you did.
24:59Because I knew instantly that I was going to die right away.
25:02Okay?
25:03But, so I went on a whole press tour.
25:07Like, you got to, but see, this is the thing.
25:09Fanboys deserve that.
25:10Yeah, yeah.
25:11Because they go out of their way to figure it all out.
25:13I already know.
25:16You know what I mean?
25:16I got the spoiler.
25:18Don't they take the enjoyment out of it?
25:20Oh, they want to.
25:21Yeah.
25:21I'm like, hey, we got something for you.
25:23You should have seen it at the premiere.
25:24They were like, hey, what is going on?
25:28No.
25:29I mean, because everyone dies.
25:31Oh, and Ryan knew that.
25:33And Ryan was like, he's the smartest guy ever.
25:36He's like, he actually gave them a real surprise.
25:40Right, right, yeah.
25:40Because they thought for sure that I was, Jerry Cruz is finally in a Marvel movie.
25:45Well, what the hell's happening?
25:48And it was so good, dude.
25:49Ryan's ahead of the game with, he's a few steps ahead of everybody else with the joke.
25:53Yes, he is.
25:54He knows where the joke is going before you know where the joke is going.
25:57He's amazing.
25:57Well, he's a perfect example of taking, because the first appearance of Deadpool was in a substandard.
26:02I mean, listen, it was okay, but he knew that it should be something.
26:05And he stuck with the project for years.
26:08Yes.
26:08And would not relent.
26:09But you got to, listen, first of all, there's two people you can't imagine, you know, as any other thing.
26:17There's Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.
26:19Yeah.
26:19And Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.
26:21Dude, there's nobody else that can take that spot.
26:25Right.
26:25You know what I mean?
26:25And that, to me, that's the ultimate.
26:28Like, this is where I want to be.
26:30I want to be irreplaceable.
26:32Yeah.
26:32I want to be like, you got to get Terry Crews, or you're missing it.
26:37And that's my goal.
26:39Like, in everything that I do, I want it to just be me.
26:43And that's what the ultimate in creativity is.
26:45You know what I mean?
26:46And when you got Ryan, when he created that character, he made it his, I can't even see it any other way.
26:51It was an honor.
26:52Well, I think now you can say, we need a Terry Crews type, and people know exactly what you're looking for.
26:57So you've reached that.
26:59But any shot of you returning, because it's happened before, in the Marvel Universe or DC?
27:06I would love to.
27:08I would love to.
27:08In fact, when you look at Deadpool, I didn't die.
27:11I was literally on life support at the end.
27:14I was laying on the ground.
27:15They were pumping my chest.
27:16That's true.
27:18So anything can happen.
27:21I'd love to see that.
27:22I'm open to all of it.
27:23Because I can.
27:25My deal is to always keep people surprised.
27:27I like to pop out of your cereal box.
27:29You know what I mean?
27:30Like, what is he doing?
27:31What is this?
27:32I literally, because this is the thing.
27:34Everyone had me at this kind of career.
27:37Yeah.
27:37And my deal is, you know, you can do anything.
27:41I want to show people.
27:42I exist to show you what's possible.
27:44And that's for real.
27:45Well, but the truth of the matter is, whenever we see you, and this is the ultimate compliment,
27:49we know it's going to be a good time, and so many things that we enjoy, that, you know,
27:55in our microcosm here, when people say, like, when they listen to the show and it gets
28:00into a tough time or something, that's the ultimate compliment.
28:02You're that exponentially with so much that you do in those projects.
28:07That's got to be, you know, that's got to be so fulfilling.
28:10But this is why, again, growing up in Flint, Michigan, and the whole log line was,
28:16you're going to hate your life, so, you know, you've got to get ready to make the sacrifice
28:21right now, you know?
28:22And I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
28:24I am only going to do what I love.
28:27If I make a little bit of money, fine.
28:29But I'm only going to do what I love.
28:31But you know what happens?
28:32Everything I'm doing now, I would do for free.
28:35I'll be honest with you.
28:36I'll do AGT for free.
28:37I would do Brooklyn Nine-Nine for free.
28:39But what happens is, when you love it that much, they pay you a lot of money.
28:42Well, that is the advice I tell our interns, or my father, both Preston and I had, fathers
28:49gave us the same advice.
28:50If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life.
28:52Right.
28:53And you will naturally excel at it, because you will invest the time in it, and with that
28:58will come the reward.
28:59Dude, I feel like I am playing all the time.
29:03I've just said play.
29:05And when I get there, it's like, my God, who gets this?
29:07Who gets this?
29:09You know what I mean?
29:10Well, you deserve it, man.
29:10You really do.
29:11Thank you, guys.
29:12Absolutely.
29:13America's Gone Talent, Mondays, 8 o'clock, and it's the champions that's going on right
29:18now.
29:18Yeah.
29:19Make sure that you check out.
29:20Dude, we are so, we've loved you here.
29:24Last time you were here, we absolutely loved it.
29:26You've got to come back any time you're in Philly.
29:28We love having you here.
29:28I love coming here, guys.
29:29You're such a positive energy force.
29:32First of all, when people talk about this stuff, too, you know, people kind of, there's
29:36people who roll their eyes, like, yeah, Mr. Positive.
29:38But first of all, it's true.
29:41Yeah.
29:41I'm not saying anything that's not true.
29:44No.
29:44And this is the deal.
29:45Because what's happening is, your brain is like, it grows weeds.
29:49You know what I mean?
29:50And you constantly got to pluck that junk out.
29:53Yeah.
29:53All the crap.
29:54All the little stuff.
29:55All that mess.
29:56You got to always, this is why you have to clean your house.
29:58This is why you have to dust.
30:00Yeah.
30:00All the time.
30:01Because if you leave it there, it's going to get dirty.
30:04It's going to get messed up.
30:05So this is the part of being positive, is reminding myself what's true.
30:09What's real.
30:10Like, it is up to you.
30:11You can do it.
30:12Yeah.
30:12That's all it is.
30:13And it's not hyperbole.
30:14It's not, oh, man, we'll pie in the sky.
30:16This is for real, for real stuff, man.
30:18I don't want anybody to mix it up and think that I'm just like, blah, blah, blah.
30:22No, we firmly believe in what you're saying, creative visualization, seeing the prize and
30:26going after it.
30:28People who dispense and dismiss it will pay the price for it.
30:32And there's so much to be gleaned if you allow yourself to buy into it and move forward.
30:38Because ultimately, everyone wants everyone to realize their optimum, their maximum.
30:45And that's something that you can achieve.
30:46I'm with it, man.
30:47It's not just crap.
30:48I'm with it.
30:49I love it.
30:49Let's go.
30:50I'm pumped now.
30:51Let's work out again.
30:53I don't want to be your whore.
30:55I don't want to be their whore.
31:00Perfect segue.
31:02Let's hear it for Terry Crews.
31:04Love you, man.
31:05Thanks for being here.
31:06Terry Crews.
