00:01It's called Santa Monica.
00:11I am still living with your ghost
00:16Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
00:22I don't wanna be your damn time
00:27I don't wanna be your stupid game
00:33With my big black boots and an old suitcase
00:37I do believe I find myself a new place
00:44I don't wanna be the bad guy
00:50I don't wanna do your sleepwalk
00:54I just wanna see some trees
01:01Go away, try to shake your disease
01:06We could live beside the ocean
01:11Leave the fire behind
01:13Swim out past the breakers
01:15Watch the world die
01:19We could live beside the ocean
01:22Leave the fire behind
01:25Swim out past the break
01:28Watch the world die
01:33Yeah, watch the world die
01:35I am still dreaming of your days
01:45Hungry and hollering for all the things you took away
01:50I don't wanna be your good time
01:55I don't wanna be your far back
02:00Crush anymore
02:02Walk right out into a brand new day
02:06Oh, it seems rising in my own weird way
02:13I don't wanna be the black guy
02:18I don't wanna do your sleepwalk
02:21I don't wanna dance anymore
02:25I just wanna see some
02:28Some shine
02:31I just wanna fight for you
02:34And be alone
02:37We could live beside the ocean
02:40Leave the fire behind
02:43Swim out past the breakers
02:45Watch the world die
02:47Watch the world die
02:49We could live beside the ocean
02:52Leave the fire behind
02:54Swim out past the breakers
02:58Watch the world die
03:03Yeah, watch the world die
03:06Watch the world die
03:10Watch the world die
03:11Oh, yeah
03:15Come on, watch the world die
03:17Yeah, watch the world die
03:21Yeah, watch the world die
03:26Yeah!
03:30Everclear, Santa Monica, MMR
03:33I have to ask because that's the song that really launched the band
03:37What was the kernel of inspiration to write that song?
03:41I was living in Portland
03:43We just got signed to Capitol
03:47We were getting ready to go to Seattle to film a video for a song off World of Noise
03:54A song called
03:56Fire and Maple song
03:57And then we were driving from there straight across
04:00To Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin
04:03At Smart Studios where we recorded this
04:06We recorded Sparkle and Fade
04:09And I had been suffering from anxiety, depression for a while
04:13I was clean, but you know, when I got clean
04:15I just started having panic attacks and stuff like that
04:17And when I drove to the beach
04:20With my wife and my daughter
04:22For a few days
04:24It just went away
04:26All the anxiety went away
04:28And then when I started heading back
04:30Away from the ocean
04:32It all came back
04:34And when I got home, I just
04:36It really, I wrote a song about comfort zones
04:39Because I grew up by the ocean
04:41I grew up on the west side of LA, Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City
04:43And I wrote this song and recorded it
04:49And my A&R guy thought it was amazing
04:53Thought it was going to be a hit
04:55Which he was right
04:57Forced us to make it a little bit longer
04:59That's another story
05:01But he was right
05:03But I called it Santa Monica
05:08Because that's my comfort zone
05:10That's where I was from, that's where I grew up
05:11Yeah
05:12And they're like, no, you can't call it that
05:15You don't say Santa Monica
05:17You can watch me call it that
05:20Yeah
05:22So, but for radio
05:24The one caveat I made was that for radio
05:27You call it Summerland, Santa Monica
05:29In parentheses, watch the world die
05:31Right
05:32Because they're like, no, you need to change that
05:33To watch the world die
05:35And the President of the Capitol was constantly calling me
05:37Calling me names
05:38And just like, no, you got to do this
05:40I'm telling you, you got to do this
05:42You're going to ruin your career
05:43I go, well
05:45You still got to pay me, Ace
05:47What?
