00:00Hurling the entrance exams of the nation's premier state university is by no means a simple feat or cakewalk.
00:08The meager 13% passing rate this year speaks for itself.
00:12But the University of the Philippines is extending its reach to the Visayas and Mindanao
00:17in their Bachelor of Science Studies in Engineering and Medicine beginning this year as our Merivelle Custodio reports.
00:24Nearly 18,000 out of over 135,000 exam takers or 13% passed the University of the Philippines College Admission Test or UPCAT.
00:36This is 6.74% increase compared to last year's UPCAT passers.
00:41Those were public schools and it's very important comprise 55% while 45% came from private schools.
00:52This is a significant figure because just three years ago, the numbers were almost the reverse.
01:01UP Mindanao will open its College of Medicine and Engineering in this upcoming academic year 2025 to 2026.
01:08The university is also open to indigenous people and those living in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas or GDAS.
01:15UP is prepared to provide transportation for residents in GDAS to testing centers to give them a chance to take the OPCAT.
01:22The LingAP program of UP supports students facing financial challenges.
01:26We provided 194 LingAP scholars, around 165,000 pesos each in financial aid last year.
01:36This year, we have earmarked funds for 300 LingAP scholars for this particular type of students.
01:43Free dormitories and meals were also provided and beneficiaries may also work as a student or graduate assistant to receive an allowance.
01:51Merong option yung ating mga LingAP scholars na pumasok bilang mga student assistants and graduate assistants.
01:58And we would want to underscore na for the first time in a decade, under this current administration, aprobahan po yung pagtaas ng sahod nila.
02:06A student assistant used to receive P60 pesos per hour. This has now been raised to P81 pesos per hour.
02:13For graduate assistants, the allowance went from P100 pesos to P145 pesos per hour.
02:20And for PhD assistants, the rate increased from P140 pesos to P211 pesos per hour.
02:27In line with this, UP encourages the alumni and the private sector to donate to the LingAP program.
02:32Through these changes and improvement in the university, more students, including those facing financial challenges, will have the opportunity to access quality education.
02:42Vel Custodio for the National TV Network for a new and better Philippines.
