00:00The only sub-500 team in the playoffs. The Bulls control the tech. The officials, Jake O'Donnell, Joe Forte, and Ron Garrison.
00:11And game number two is underway. Bulls coming off the 126-85 clobbering on Thursday. Here is Jordan. Yes!
00:20Michael Jordan, during the regular season, averaged 31 points in four games. Against the Knicks, shooting 56 percent. Tucker for three.
00:37You saw the double team immediately on Ewing, who got it back outside, but Tucker not able to hit.
00:44Now Grant, posting on Oakley. And Jordan with a tough angle shot.
00:55Michael Jordan, a player who's taken his game into different areas and improved. His perimeter game was questioned initially. Michael Jordan knocks him out from the outside.
01:04Now single coverage on Ewing, who fired from deep. Pippen on the rebound. And the Bulls are on the move again.
01:11Cheeks with the steal. And the crowd reacts close to a palming violation by Maurice Cheeks, who did not have a good one here Thursday.
01:22A three attempted by Vandewa. And Oakley able to get to it.
01:27Ewing.
01:29And he tips it home.
01:31Patrick Ewing.
01:32You mentioned that last time down, Patrick Ewing only had single coverage on him.
01:36If Cartwright can bump him away from the low block, make him step out a ways, they will not have to come and double-team.
01:41It's when he catches it in the red paint area, that's when Chicago will double-team and quickly.
01:48Pippen played by Vandewa.
01:55Here's Vandewa.
01:57It's a child.
01:58And John McClown, off the bench in a hurry, was upset about the call.
02:07Chicago has such great athletes in transition defense.
02:10They have three white shirts back already as New York tries to run a fast break.
02:14They change ends of the floor so well.
02:17Defense to offense, and offense back to defense.
02:20The Knicks have opened up, hitting one of their first five.
02:22Chicago with a 4-2 lead, a quick release by Grant.
02:26And Tucker with a good play to get it out of the hands of Jordan.
02:33Again, the crowd looking for a travel.
02:36Nice pass from Oakley, and Vandewa has tied it at four.
02:41Already we can see that New York has opened up its offense a little bit as Scotty Pippen takes it the length of the floor, misses the layup.
02:47New York trying to play a little more freely today, take some of those chains off of him.
02:52Well, actually, the Knicks in game number one opened up in decent fashion.
02:58Close ball game until the final minutes of the first quarter.
03:02And then the Bulls pulled away.
03:03Foul called on Oakley.
03:05He took a shot in the mouth.
03:09It was a one-point-a-21-19 game, and then it got away.
03:13It was over in the second quarter.
03:16Chicago rotating comes with hands, very aggressive.
03:19They force turnovers.
03:20They make things happen.
03:21They're one of the best in the league.
03:23And creating easy scoring opportunities through their defense.
03:28Three minutes in.
03:30And the game is tied at four.
03:32They isolate Jordan on Tucker, and Tucker played him well.
03:37Cartwright.
03:38He ran into a Jordan, but a nice throw by Cartwright.
03:42He pushed with his teammate.
03:45The Knicks wanted to travel, but Cartwright has given his club a 6-4 lead.
03:49And we see the matchup down there.
03:50Charles Oakley is playing against Cartwright instead of Ewing, trying to cut back on a number of personal fouls that Ewing picks up.
03:56Here's Ewing.
03:56Here's Ewing.
03:57Here's Ewing.
03:59Here's Ewing.
04:00Here's Ewing.
04:01Here's Ewing.
04:02Here's Ewing.
04:03Jordan started to come over as if he would double up and then stop back.
04:07Chicago calls that their deep drop on defense.
04:10Get back as far as you can, where you know you can still get back to your man, particularly a Trent Tucker, who's a three-point threat.
04:16And Cartwright goes right at Oakley and draws the foul.
04:22And Mike, no question about the intent of the Chicago Bulls off the Cartwright-Oakley matchup.
04:28We're seeing Cartwright a bit more active.
04:31Well, from the beginning of the game, I'm sure Chicago talked about going at the center position.
04:36Cartwright gives a little up-and-under move right here.
04:38Gets Ewing in the air.
04:39He's being very aggressive offensively.
04:41This is something they've talked about.
04:42Well, if they can pick up fouls on Ewing, obviously, it's to their advantage.
04:46Bill Cartwright in past years, a very solid free-throw shooter, but not the case thus far this season at a career low 70%.
04:57He says his mechanics have been abnormally bad because he hasn't gone to the line as often as in past years.
05:04But he says that he can feel that the stroke is returning.
05:08Bill Cartwright has always had excellent touch shooting the basketball.
05:11Well, sometimes it leaves you, and then you have to find a way of getting it back again.
05:15A concern right now, though, for John McLeod.
05:17Do you leave Charles Oakley on the floor with two personal fouls this early in the basketball game?
05:22Bulls eight and the next six.
05:24The shot clock is down to five.
05:37Ewing over Cartwright.
05:42Here comes Trout.
05:44Paxson with the open shot.
05:45Yes.
05:46The ball's ten and the next six.
05:53John Paxson shooting about 55% from the floor, and he is not a guy who drives it a lot to the basket.
05:58He's a pull-up jump shooter with a deadly eye.
06:01Did not have a good one in game one.
06:02Cartwright with the steal.
06:05Paxson a two-for-eight on Thursday.
06:07Jordan changed his mind.
06:11Grant.
06:13Four-footed.
06:1412-6.
06:14Well, I think John McLeod needs a timeout here to try and get this group back under control.
06:18Turnovers are what exploded the game last time for Chicago against New York.
06:23Already we see those problems again surfacing.
06:25And I have the feeling the Knicks lost their composure late first quarter, early second.
06:33Cartwright in a battle with Ewing, prompting the reaction.
06:38Ewing.
06:39Once again, a one-on-one move, and Patrick Ewing has opened up, hitting three out of six from the field.
06:46The Bulls lead at 12-8.
06:47Looks to me like Phil Jackson said, hey, let's come out in the first quarter and just play him straight up,
06:51see what adjustments they've made, then we'll go back to double-teaming him.
06:53And Cartwright at the other end continues to take advantage of Charles Oakley.
07:01As we know, playoffs become mismatched situations.
07:03Taking advantage of it, we saw it in the Golden State game yesterday.
07:07Again, they're going at the mismatch.
07:09Too much size for Cartwright over Oakley.
07:11Oakley was hit by timeout.
07:15And now the Bulls take a timeout.
07:18And hear it from the crowd as they head back to the bench.
07:226-21 remaining in this first quarter.
07:25It's the Bulls leading at 14-8.
07:28Cartwright and Ewing mixing it up here in the early moments.
07:34In game one, Thursday night here in Chicago, the Bulls wallop the Knicks by 41 points.
07:40The Knicks' worst ever playoff defeat.
07:43I talked about it earlier with John McLeod.
07:47Marv, I was embarrassed.
07:49I mean, I was embarrassed.
07:50I was mad.
07:51I was upset.
07:51And hopefully our club was too.
07:54I mean, we got shellacked.
07:55There's no way to get around that.
07:58We got shellacked.
08:00No way to get around it.
08:02And what made it worse for the Knick players this week, they're wobbed on Thursday night.
08:07They had to spend quite a bit of time here in the city of Chicago.
08:11And they were even being taunted around the hotel the last couple of days.
08:16That's even more of a crusher.
08:18If you've coached or played in the NBA, we've all had that feeling and experienced it at
08:24one time or another.
08:26Hearing these sarcastic remarks from fans as you're walking in the hotel lobby.
08:32Well, Patrick Ewing off to a 3-for-6 start.
08:35The Bulls lead it 14-8.
08:373-for-6, but already six shot attempts.
08:39Last game, only seven for the entire game.
08:42Tucker with an open three.
08:43So, Trent Tucker, who missed his first two attempts, is able to connect.
08:49Do they need that?
08:50Just open it up a little bit so that Ewing has a little more room inside to operate.
08:54Both clubs remaining the same following the timeout.
09:02Grant.
09:05Next with Cheeks and Tucker at the guards.
09:08Ewing, Oakley, Vandaway up front.
09:13Ewing off the fake.
09:17Rebounded by Oakley.
09:19And the Bulls lead by Wong.
09:21It's a big gamble for John McLeod to leave him in the game right now, but he feels if he's
09:24got a chance to win this thing, he has to have Oakley on the floor to try and help out
09:28on the glass.
09:28This is not a real good rebounding team, the New York Knicks.
09:31And that despite the fact that they have individually two of the better rebounders in the league in
09:36Ewing and Oakley, but not much else in terms of help off the board.
09:42Ewing, yes.
09:51No question about the intent of Patrick Ewing going right at the Bulls here in the opening
09:57moments and he's given the Knicks a 15-14 lead.
10:00Now the other side of the ledger and the Knicks have certainly seen it throughout the year
10:07is that you do not want, there's a block by Cheeks and Pippen back.
10:11Cheeks goes right at him and the Knicks lead at 17-14.
10:15The other side of the picture is the Knicks must get a balance.
10:18You don't want it too much, Patrick Ewing.
10:21And during the course of the season they were hurt by that.
10:24There were several Knicks players unhappy about the fact that Ewing was taking too many
10:28shots.
10:28Wait a minute, isn't this what we heard about Chicago at the end of last year?
10:31More people have to become involved if they're going to win a championship?
10:34We need to distribute the shots around.
10:38Jordan's three way off.
10:39Ewing on the rebound, dribbles through the pack, goes all the way.
10:44Patrick Ewing taking charge to make it 19-14.
10:49If you ever question his ability as an athlete, you saw it right there.
10:53Rebound the ball, dribble at the length of the floor against Michael Jordan, and convert
10:57at the other end.
10:5911 unanswered points by the Knicks who have been lifted by number 33, Patrick Ewing.
11:06He's hit for 10.
11:08And a timeout has been called by Chicago as Phil Jackson wants to talk it over.
11:14The New York Knicks have come out very strong here in the first quarter.
11:20They've hit their last four field goal attempts, sparked by the play of Patrick Ewing, an 11-0
11:26run by the Knicks who are looking to get some emotion into it.
11:31This has not been a club that has shown many signs of emotion during the course of the season.
11:37I think it's just so much more fun to play, and I know it's more fun to coach when people
11:40do it with enthusiasm, with spirit, with emotion when they show some excitement for what they're
11:45doing.
11:47Knicks laid it 19-14.
11:53Pippen hit on a reach-in.
11:56Scottie Pippen, who burned the Knicks on Thursday night, yet to score.
12:01Vanderway picked up the foul, his second.
12:03John McLeod starting out in conventional defensive matchups, but we'll be ready to switch if Pippen
12:10starts hurting Vanderway too much.
12:14Jordan off the spin to the scoop!
12:18Spectacular shot by Michael Jordan!
12:26Knicks by three.
12:28Three and a half left in this opening quarter.
12:30Nice look by Ewing Grant, though, able to reject.
12:36Oakley came over late, but got a piece of it.
12:39And Ewing that time bumped out of the low post position, turned, faced up, and found his
12:43teammate down low.
12:45Nice passing for the seven-footer inside.
12:47Here is Ewing, and he is on fire, hitting from all angles.
12:53Ewing now with 12, 6 for 10 from the field.
12:57That presents such a problem for a coach, when a guy has the ability to make those shots,
13:01but you understand that's not the best way to play.
13:03As Cartwright takes it right into Ewing's face.
13:06Scoring, trying to draw a foul on the big guy.
13:08Meanwhile, Bill Cartwright has played well.
13:10Eight points, he's three for three from the floor.
13:13I was saying before that the problem with Ewing shooting those is he's not near the offensive
13:17boards, he doesn't get fouled a lot, and then if he misses, they're running out.
13:20Ewing again!
13:21And he is eating up the Bulls.
13:25Cartwright is not getting help.
13:27It's, for the most part, been a one-on-one play.
13:30Knicks down lead at 23-18.
13:32In game one, the Bulls came right away to double-team.
13:35They discouraged Patrick Ewing by staying home early.
13:37They've let him get some confidence up here.
13:40And away, played Pippen well, but Scottie Pippen has raised that outside shot to a new level.
13:46And for Scottie, his first field goal.
13:49Knicks lead it 23-20.
13:56Shot clock worked down to six.
14:00Tucker with three on the 24.
14:05And last touch by Ewing.
14:08It will be Chicago ball.
14:11Michael Jordan was anticipating the trap.
14:13He dribbled around Ewing, pulls it back, concentration all the way on the front of the rim.
14:21Patrick shows the ball, gets caught right in the air, and then takes it home.
14:24That's what we're talking about as far as being aggressive.
14:27Back to the live action.
14:28A nice backdoor pass for Grant.
14:31His second field goal.
14:32And the Knick lead is 23-22, with 1.40 remaining in this first quarter.
14:40Ewing has 14.
14:41Jordan has six points.
14:44The Knick offense has been all Patrick Ewing.
14:48Gerald Wilkins getting set to check in for the first time.
14:51Shot clock is down to two.
14:53So Cheeks had a force.
14:54And it hits a three-point force by Maurice Cheeks.
14:58And he hit it.
14:59Knicks lead at 26-22.
15:01Knicks lead by通 Stariels.
15:08Terlieditting doesghウ.
15:09He's a teacher.
15:11He's a teacher.
15:16Enter yourge is a teacher.
15:17He's a teacher.
15:19There he is.
15:22Now let's you want to draw down.
15:27Here he is.
15:28You gotta get it.
