00:01It's time to test your trivia IQ on the world's most popular trivia game, Trivial Pursuit!
00:08And here's the star of the show, the man who knows how many squeaks can be filled in an hour, Wake Martindale!
00:17Thank you very much Randy West, thank you ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Trivial Pursuit, the television version.
00:23You know, I've had quite a few birthdays, so I'm something of an expert on cake.
00:27Did you know that the hostess company can fill 52,000 Twinkies every hour, 24 hours a day, 52,000?
00:34And I'll bet that if you laid all those Twinkies end to end, they would circle Roseanne Arnold.
00:42But not for long.
00:44We have a lot more trivia to cover today, and to help us, we have three contestants who will be answering questions and competing for a chance to play our bonus game for a fabulous trip to Jamaica.
00:54Here's how we play. Each of our players has a game pie in front of them.
00:57The object of the game is to be the first player to light up all six colors in that pie.
01:01They do that by answering questions from categories that match those colors.
01:04And it takes two questions to fully light up a color.
01:07Our round one questions are all general trivia.
01:09The categories are geography, entertainment, history, art and literature, science and nature, and sports and leisure.
01:15Our first player is Morris Rosenfeld, a retired college professor.
01:19Morris, you'll choose the first category, and I'll ask you a question.
01:22Get it right, you'll light up a wedge in your pie.
01:24Get it wrong, and either Deborah or Russell can steal that wedge with the correct answer.
01:28What category would you like to start with?
01:30Art and literature, Wink.
01:31Here's this question for that red wedge.
01:33What biblical prophet was swallowed by a great fish, not a whale, according to the King James Bible?
01:38Jonah.
01:39Jonah is the answer, and you have that wedge.
01:41And that's the way we play the game.
01:43I give you a question, you give me an answer, you get a wedge.
01:45Say hello to Deborah Parmet.
01:47Is that the correct pronunciation, Deborah?
01:48Yes, it is.
01:49All right.
01:50She is a studio singer from Studio City, California.
01:52It's hard to say.
01:53Deborah, select a category.
01:54I'd like entertainment, please.
01:56For this question.
01:57Deborah, in what blockbuster 1982 film was Deborah Winger's voice electronically altered to allow a lovable alien to phone home?
02:06E.T.
02:07That's right.
02:09That's all we needed.
02:10Our third player is Russell Giles, an event consultant from Los Angeles.
02:14Russell, select, please.
02:15I'll take history, Wink.
02:17For this question.
02:18Who was the only president who ran unopposed for the office?
02:22Washington.
02:23George Washington is the answer.
02:25Very good.
02:26Very good.
02:27That might throw a lot of people, but it didn't throw Russell.
02:30Morris, it's your turn again.
02:31Geography, Wink.
02:32All right.
02:33For this question.
02:34The Forbidden City, which contains the palaces of former emperors, is encircled by what Asian metropolis?
02:41Beijing.
02:42Yes.
02:44Deborah, pick a category.
02:45There are two left.
02:46Um, signs of nature, please.
02:48For this question.
02:49What type of crab got its name because it moves like a huge front claw, like a musician playing a violin?
02:59A Stravinsky.
03:00Russell?
03:01Fiddler crab.
03:02The Fiddler crab.
03:05I like that, Deborah.
03:06Did you say Stravinsky crab?
03:07Sure.
03:08Maybe that'll be a new crab of the future.
03:09All right.
03:10One left.
03:11Russell, this belongs to you.
03:12Sports and Leisure, the category.
03:13In what children's card game do players deal out a deck of 51 cards and try not to get stuck with the unmatched queen?
03:19Old maid.
03:20That's right.
03:21You have it.
03:23You were asking me, not telling me.
03:25We're all out of categories, which means that's the end of our first round.
03:28Before we take a break, let's find out more about our contestants.
03:30Morris, you picked up two wedges in the first round.
03:32You went back to grad school at 48 and changed professions?
03:35Yes.
03:36I sold my business, went back to grad school for a couple years and then became a college professor.
03:40Terrific.
03:41What college?
03:42Kendall College in Evanston, Illinois.
03:43Wonderful.
03:44Do you enjoy the experience?
03:45I loved it.
03:46We have somebody from Illinois?
03:47Why not?
03:48Yeah.
03:49All right, Deborah, you picked up one wedge.
03:51You used to place person-to-person calls for Elvis Presley?
03:54Yes, I did.
03:55Has it been lately or...?
03:57No, it was the first time he was alive.
03:59Oh, I see.
04:00How many...
04:01Were you young?
04:02I was...
04:03I was very young.
04:04So you were very soon.
04:05I'm much older than I was.
04:06Did he ever answer the phone?
04:07Did you ever get it?
04:08No, but we talked to his grandmother and his father and all of the bodyguards and...
04:10Well, terrific.
04:11Everybody but Elvis.
04:12Terrific.
04:13My wife, by the way, used to date Elvis until I came along.
04:16Let's say hello to three wedges.
04:18Russell, you picked up in that round.
04:20You are a former stuntman, I understand.
04:22That's right.
04:23It's a profession I just kind of fell into.
04:25Oh, Russell.
04:27First thing you know, he'll be wanting to host the show.
04:31I'll be out of work.
04:32We'll be back with round two where the categories change, but the trivia keeps on coming right
04:35after this.
04:48...deal with are settings, titles, off-screen, on-screen, production, and portrayals.
04:54Also, there are bonus questions in this round where players can earn some cash as well as
04:58an extra piece of the pie.
04:59Deborah, we start with you.
05:00Pick a category, please.
05:01Uh, portrayals, please.
05:02For this question.
05:03In the 1992 film, who plays the medicine man who finds a cure for cancer in the rainforest?
05:09Sean Connery.
05:10That is correct, yes.
05:11And you have that wedge.
05:13Russell?
05:14I'll take titles, Mike.
05:15All right.
05:16For that pink wedge, Daniel Day-Lewis won a Best Actor Oscar for his role as a disabled
05:21person in a film named for the only part of his body that he could use.
05:24What was the title?
05:25My Left Foot.
05:26You got it.
05:27Very good, Russell.
05:28Morris, it is your turn.
05:29Off-screen.
05:30Off-screen.
05:31For this question.
05:32Marlon Brando asked that his name be taken off the credits of a 1992 film because he
05:38believed the portrayal of the explorer featured in the title was not accurate.
05:42Who was that explorer?
05:46Russell?
05:47Christopher Columbus.
05:48That is correct.
05:49The Discovery.
05:50Where's the picture?
05:51Christopher Columbus.
05:52Deborah, it is your turn.
05:53On-screen, please.
05:54On-screen is a bonus question.
05:55Get this right and give you a chance to pick up an extra wedge and $100 in cash.
06:01First, let me ask the question.
06:02I want you to watch a clip from the 1947 Bob Hope comedy, My Favorite Brunette.
06:07Take a look at our screen.
06:08What's up, sister?
06:09My name is Carlotta Monte.
06:10Baroness Monte.
06:11A Baroness?
06:12I feel as though someone's watching me.
06:13Yeah, that's me.
06:14Deborah, when Bing Crosby made his cameo appearance at the end of that film, it brought together the
06:27three stars of the classic road pictures.
06:29Who is the actress in that trio?
06:31Dorothy L'Amour.
06:32That is correct.
06:33Yes.
06:34Now you have a chance at $100 and another wedge of any color you choose.
06:37The same year, that trio of stars made My Favorite Brunette.
06:40They also made the fifth in their popular road series.
06:43This one ended up in what South American city?
06:48It was the road to Rio.
06:50Rio.
06:51Rio de Janeiro.
06:52The road to Rio.
06:53Russell, select, please.
06:54Blue Wink.
06:55I'm sorry.
06:56Settings is blue.
06:57In Annie Hall, what city was Woody Allen referring to when he said its only cultural advantage
07:02is that you can make a right turn on a red light?
07:05Los Angeles.
07:06That is correct.
07:07Los Angeles, California.
07:08Mars, your turn to redeem yourself.
07:11Production Wink.
07:12Alright, for that green wedge.
07:13Accused of Japan bashing, the makers of what film watered down the anti-Japanese message
07:18in Michael Crichton's bestseller?
07:22The Firm?
07:23No.
07:24Russell.
07:25Rising sun, the answer.
07:26Rising sun.
07:28Alright, that was the last of our round two questions.
07:30So let's start round three with six new categories.
07:32And those categories are people and places, entertainment, history, science and nature,
07:36sports and leisure, and wild card.
07:38And Russell, it's your turn to begin.
07:40Science and nature, Wink.
07:42For this question.
07:43Russell, what name is shared by a nagging woman and one of the smallest but most vicious
07:47of North American mammals?
07:49Shrew.
07:50That is right.
07:52Alright, Mars, your turn again.
07:54Wild card, please.
07:56And that is a bonus question.
07:59This could help you get this question right.
08:01You'll have a chance for an extra wedge and a hundred dollars.
08:03Listen to this familiar melody, Lawrence.
08:04Morris, that is the famous funeral march written by what great Polish-born pianist and composer?
08:17Chopin.
08:18Frédéric Chopin.

08:22Chopin had a celebrated ten-year love affair with a French novelist who wrote under a man's name.
08:27What was that name?
08:28Georges Stant.
08:29That is correct.
08:31Gives you a hundred dollars and what extra wedge would you like to light up?
08:36Let me have green, please.
08:37Green it is.
08:38Deborah, select, please.
08:39I'll take yellow, uh, history.
08:42Yellow history.
08:43And that, too, is a bonus question.
08:45I think that's your second.
08:46Get this right, you get a chance for an extra wedge and a hundred dollars.
08:49Watch this clip from the famous speech.
08:51Feast your eyes on the screen.
08:53I should say this, that Pat doesn't have a mink coat.
08:56But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat.
09:00And I always tell her that she'd look good in anything.
09:04Deborah, that was Richard Nixon in the 1952 campaign desperately trying to keep his spot on the Republican ticket.
09:10That speech is now known by the name of Nixon's Cocker Spaniel, which he also mentioned in the speech.
09:15Name that dog.
09:17Checkers.
09:18Yes, checkers.
09:19You almost couldn't get it.
09:20For a hundred dollars and an extra wedge, in that 1952 campaign, Eisenhower and Nixon went on to defeat the team of vice presidential candidate John Sparkman and presidential candidate who?
09:30Adlai Stevenson.
09:34Stevenson.
09:35Sparkman and Stevenson.
09:36Russell, select.
09:37Uh, entertainment.
09:38For this question, what actor said half of this belongs to a horse someplace out in the valley when he accepted his Oscar for Cat Baloo?
09:47Lee Marvin.
09:48That is correct.
09:49And you had that right.
09:50Mars Tula, which one would you like?
09:53Peoples and Places, please.
09:54All right.
09:55What singer pays homage to her mother by telling her fans it's already been sung when she's asked to sing Over the Rainbow?
10:03Liza Minnelli.
10:04That is correct.

10:06One category remains for you, Deborah, and it is sports and leisure.
10:09What rubbery pizza cheese originally was made solely from the milk of the water buffalo?
10:15Mozzarella.
10:16Mozzarella is right.
10:17And that's the end of round three.
10:19So let's check our scores before we go to our break.
10:22Morris, you need seven wedges to win.
10:24So do you, Deborah.
10:25You need seven.
10:26And only three needed by Russell to win the game of Trivial Pursuit.
10:29Anything can happen in our final round as we've seen on prior shows.
10:33That final round comes up right after this.
10:35Morris.
10:48Welcome back to our game of Trivial Pursuit, everybody.
10:51And we have a real good game going here.
10:53Morris, you need seven wedges to win.
10:55Deborah, you also need seven wedges to win.
10:57Russell is out in front.
10:58He needs only three wedges to win.
11:00But anything can happen in this final round.
11:03Once again, we'll be playing our basic categories, the ones from round one.
11:07I'm going to start this round by asking a question to all three of you.
11:10The first player to answer correctly gets control of the game.
11:13That means you can keep picking categories and answering questions until you miss one.
11:17At which point, either of your opponents can jump in and take control of the game away from you.
11:21The first player to fill his pie wins the game along with $500
11:24and the chance to play our bonus round for an additional $1,000 and a trip to Jamaica.
11:29So if you're ready, hands on buzzers, this is for control of the game.
11:32Morris, Deborah, and Russell.
11:34According to an old proverb, what speak louder than words?
11:38Deborah.
11:39Actions.
11:40Yes, actions speak louder than words.

17:43Where are they from?
17:44From around all over, I might say, North America.

17:57Bob, I got a bunch of trivia questions here.
17:59I'll show you four possible answers on our board, and then I'll ask you a question.

18:05I'll keep asking questions until we run out of time.
