00:00George Martin is someone who brought a whole set of skills that really had never been associated
00:11with recording before into the studio and expanded the music enormously. It's very difficult to
00:18imagine what the Beatles would have sounded like without George Martin.
00:22When we first met George, we loved him because he took a chance on us. No one else would take a chance
00:31with a name like that. You come from Liverpool, not a chance in hell.
00:40George Martin, his influence was so mighty.
00:44He wasn't there to put his stamp on it. He was there to make this the best recording.
00:54You can cut, you can edit, obviously you can slow down or speed up the tape. You can put in backwards
01:06stuff. And this is the kind of thing you can do on recording, which you obviously couldn't possibly
01:10do. Because it is, in fact, making up music as you go along.
01:14The songs were already incredible and brilliant, but with George's guidance, it developed an appetite
01:23in each of those four that made them greater than they knew they could be.
01:27I'm in G, but it'll be in F. It goes E minor to A seventh to D minor.
01:34My dad was trying to look for influences outside of the realm of pop music. They wanted to push
01:41the boundaries of sound. They wanted to create something new all of the time. He was open
01:44to anything. There were no rules. The only rules were to make great sounding records.
01:49OK, man.
01:56Yesterday, all my troubles seem so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay.
02:06He said, what do you think, Ben? And I said, well, there's nothing we can do to put on top
02:11of this and make it more beautiful, except perhaps some strings.
02:18Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play. I need a place to hide away. Oh, I believe in yesterday.
02:34His knowledge of classical music and his arrangements are still the greatest that have ever been done in the context of rock music.
02:42He used strings in a way that was so innovative and I don't think anyone had thought of before.
02:50George Martin made strings cool, you know?
02:54You know, until then, I thought, I can be a rock star. I want to be a rock star. I want to be on stage.
02:58I want to have the girls screaming at me. I want all that stuff. I want a limo, everything.
03:03But now, I wanted to be George Martin.
03:05And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.
03:21You, I want to have the girls.
03:24You are
03:25And you, I want to be a rock star. You know, what you want to be, you pick up the board.
