00:00Buongiorno, buonasera, benvenuti amici. Welcome my friends. My name is Vincenzo and welcome to my channel and the channel is Fountain Pen Therapy. What is this all about folks? Well it's this time of the year where I award the Fountain Pen Therapy Pen Awards in various categories. Stay tuned for this first category which will go to the Chinese Pen of the Year and the Chinese Pen Maker of the Year. Enjoy.
00:30We'll be right back.
01:00Okay so we're back with the pens. These folks are my favorite Chinese pens for the year 2024.
01:12Some of them have made my 12 nominee list and some have not. The ones that you see up right here are the ones that are in my view I would like to give some honorable mention to but did not make my list.
01:28This is not in particular in any particular order other than by Pen Maker and then we'll look at some writing samples. We'll get into my 12 nominees and my last three and then finally my winner.
01:41First of all from left to right you have the Asvine nominees. Of course you have the V200. Beautiful, beautiful pen. Titanium. You have the J16 Titanium.
01:53Now what's surprising is that although Asvine gets a lot of airplay so to speak 2024 has been a pretty slim year for them. These are really the only two pens that I think were worthy of mention. I'm not sure there were any others.
02:08There may have been different colors or different materials for some of the other pens that came out in previous years but in terms of novel models these are the only two that I think are worthy of mention.
02:21I'm not even sure there are any more than these two. Next on the listing here is the Magon entries. You have the V60. You have the Ti or Titanium 136.
02:39And of course you have the P139 with the number 8 size nib. The Honorable mention goes to this P136. I think this is a beautiful pen. Yes, I know that Magon has kind of copied a lot of pens this year and that this is just another, you know, not a complete knockoff but certainly heavily inspired Mont Blanc.
03:08But let me tell you, I really love this pen. I know some reviewers kind of didn't enjoy it at all. I did. I like the feel of this pen. I like the look of this pen. It's in my pen list or my everyday pens very often. My pen case, I should say.
03:30So I really like this pen. So I really like this pen. But unfortunately, it did not make my 12. But I did want to give it Honorable Mention.
03:39These are the two trammel. This is Honorable Mention. It's kind of a dual fold inspiration, obviously. But I think this is an extremely well made pen.
03:51If you like some of these decorative engravings, very nicely done. Of course, the trammels are now coming with Bach, with Yowo nibs, which is a change for the Chinese pen makers this year.
04:07We're starting to see not only their original nibs, but, you know, we saw Bach, we saw Schmidt, and now we saw, we see Yowo.
04:16So Honorable Mention to this T630, I believe it is referred to from Trammel.
04:21But the trammel nominee for me is this little trammel cream, I think they call it, just because of the resin.
04:32The resin looks like cheap plastic, but it isn't. It feels like a Mont Blanc precious resin.
04:38It did come in with a Yowo nib. So I think it's worthy of mention. It comes in different colors.
04:45And this is my favorite one. Of course, it's heavily inspired, and it looks like the pro gear from Sailor.
04:55Having said that, that's my nominee.
04:57Next on the listing here, you see the three Ongdien. Again, Ongdien, slim pick this year for them.
05:04But at the end of the day, probably more than Asvine.
05:08And is Asvine, Ongdien, the same company? I've always had my suspicions.
05:13The first one, of course, is this Ongdien A9 with a number eight size nib.
05:21I like this Ongdien. Yes, it resembles some of the other models that came out in 2023
05:26in terms of this outside coating.
05:30But I like the fact that they've put in this non-slip kind of resin section.
05:38And it is a different, it does give us a different look.
05:43So that's the A9.
05:46Then we have the WA35 and the CA35, which are the aerospace pens, if you will,
05:56which commemorate aerospace or Chinese aerospace.
05:59And out of the two, I chose the more elaborate one, which is the WA35 or 351, as some have called it.
06:12Some may not appreciate all this elaborate engraving and embossing.
06:18I do, and the nibs, of course, are similar.
06:21So it made my nominally list.
06:25Next in line is Lemon.
06:27And from Lemon, I know they've expanded their nib offerings,
06:33but I really enjoyed these two pens.
06:36First of all, this is the heavily inspired, if not knockoff, of Little Prince
06:41or even maybe the anniversary pen.
06:48I just, that pen, that nib is just completely, completely blown me away.
06:54And that's one of the main reasons why this pen even made my list.
06:58It's well made.
07:00And, you know, folks, if you want to feel how a 146 feels, this is as close as it gets.
07:07Another Maubla inspiration, at least they didn't copy the finial and, you know, the Maubla crest,
07:15but it's this M5.
07:17That was the M6.
07:18This is the M5, the Panda Pen, as they called it.
07:21A beautifully, beautifully made pen sits in that hand.
07:27The comfort level of this pen is just fabulous.
07:31They, you know, the fact that there's faceted cap
07:35and all of this elaboration makes this pen a really fun pen to work with.
07:41A great writing experience.
07:42So it made my final list.
07:44I know this is a controversial pen and some didn't like the clip,
07:47but you know what?
07:48This Tian Dao from Jin Ao, again, with a beautiful number eight size nib,
07:54that big converter, writes really well.
07:56You're going to see the combination of the ink that I've put in this pen really quick as well.
08:02Since the original red, we've had offerings in completely transparent.
08:08I've seen them in blue.
08:09I've seen them in green.
08:10So you're getting different colors if you don't like that red.
08:13But I really, I mean, this is the, probably the only Jin Ao that was worthy of mention.
08:20The rest is different, you know, different resins or different colors of the same pen.
08:26But this is my Jin Ao entry for 2024.
08:30Last but not least is this M800 from Atmok,
08:35which of course is meant to be greatly inspired by the Pelican pens.
08:41I've got a little surprise for you under the hood here.
08:44These are the two versions that I own.
08:46They also have the M400 that didn't make my list,
08:50but probably should have made honorable mention.
08:52But there you have it.
08:54This is with the Schmidt nib.
08:56And underneath this one, I've got a surprise for you.
09:00So stay tuned for that.
09:02So those folks are my entries.
09:04Those are my runner-ups.
09:06Give me a chance.
09:07We'll set up with some writing samples.
09:10And we'll take you through number 12 right up to the last three.
09:14And of course, declare the winner.
09:16So there you have it.
09:17Stay tuned.
09:17Okay, so we're back to look at the 12th.
09:22And we'll do so with writing samples.
09:24Now, before I do that, let me tell you how I compiled the ranking, if you will.
09:32What I did is I created a little spreadsheet.
09:34And these are the parameters, if you will, that I looked at and scored each parameter on 10
09:45and gave rankings that way and then compiled everything and then let the list do its work,
09:55the Excel sheet.
09:56And these are the results that I got.
09:57First of all, I take a look at the originality of the design.
10:02I gave some marks for that.
10:04The design itself, in terms of how it's, you know, if it's a good imitation, if it's not
10:15a good imitation, if you will.
10:18And then I gave some points for build quality.
10:23I gave some points for the nib, of course.
10:26I looked at the writing, the overall writing experience, comfort level, the way it posts,
10:32et cetera, et cetera.
10:33I looked at the materials that are being used.
10:37I looked at the filler or the filling mechanism, gave some marks for that.
10:43And then I compiled it all, totaled the scores, and these are the results.
10:50Okay?
10:50So here we go.
10:52Number 12 on the list is this Lemon M6.
10:57And I've got to tell you, because it didn't get a lot of points for originality, especially
11:03given that five-star, it's not a six-star, but it's a five-star Mont Blanc at the end.
11:10But I think the nib is what probably gave this pen a nominee ship, if you will.
11:21So this is the Lemon M6.
11:26And it's got a lemon nib.
11:30And let me tell you, one of the best nibs in my collection.
11:37Very, very nice.
11:39So it made my list.
11:45And it is number 12.
11:48Beautiful pen.
11:49Otherwise, it's just, you know, it's a pity that they had to go through that length to
11:56copy it.
11:57But it's a very comfortable pen, everyday writer, go-to pen for me.
12:04So number 12.
12:06Number 11 on the list is this V60.
12:10Again, because I think Mahjong chose to inspire itself a little too much.
12:19But this is the Mahjong V60.
12:29Very, very nice pen.
12:31Now, I know some people hated this pen.
12:34And also, I know the Inquiring Minds believes that it would probably make his worst pen of
12:41the year.
12:42But, you know, I agree with the likes of Mr. Brown.
12:49Esprit Brown, you know, loves this pen.
12:51Compared it to the original.
12:53He has a Magnum Omas 360.
12:57And you know what?
12:58This pen got me hunting for the real thing.
13:02Now that I know how comfortable this pen is, and I know the original Omas has problems
13:07with the filler system, that piston.
13:13But let me tell you, this pen is well-made.
13:16It writes really, really nicely.
13:17I've ordered, in fact, all the colors with different nibs I've put in.
13:24It's got, you know, you can swap it.
13:27And the Mahjong nibs work really, really well.
13:30And what I like about it is that I was able to, because I have a tendency to write at a
13:38bad angle with my nibs.
13:40Everybody points that out.
13:42What I've done here is that I've put that nib slightly off center.
13:47I don't know if you could see that.
13:49So that when I grip it, the pen lines up nice and straight.
13:55And it takes advantage of, it corrects, if you will, the angle.
14:01So one of the nice things about that, the pen, I know that Inquiring Minds couldn't get
14:07out that nib.
14:08Yeah, it'll kind of force it out a little bit.
14:11And maybe when you do so, you damage the feed.
14:13But no big deal.
14:15These feeds are pretty cheap.
14:16You can replace them.
14:18I think this is a gorgeous pen.
14:19So it made my number 11 list.
14:22Number 10.
14:23I can't keep emphasizing how nice this pen is.
14:31This is the Trammel, I think they call it cream.
14:39And it, you know, it resembles a Sailor Pro gear.
14:45But it comes with a YOWO nib.
14:49So you can choose, you know, right up to broad.
14:54And I cannot stress enough about the quality of this resin.
15:01It is not plastic, folks.
15:03It feels like the Mont Blanc precious resin, if you will.
15:07And it's got some really nice heft to it for a small pen like that.
15:13I think it's a gorgeous pen, well made.
15:17Trammel is, for me, a novelty in 2024.
15:20And it's made the list.
15:22How can I not make the list?
15:25It's just a gorgeous little pen.
15:27Everyday carry.
15:29I am enjoying it tremendously.
15:31Number 9 on my list is this Ongdian.
15:34And I know this is controversial.
15:37One, there may be some politics there that people don't appreciate.
15:42But, and others don't appreciate all that.
15:46You know, it's kind of a little bit heavy in terms of elaborate embossing, etc.
15:50So let me get that down.
15:53Ongdian WA35.
16:00You know, I think it's a well-made pen.
16:03It gets enormous points for design and originality.
16:09The build quality is, you know, Ongdian up to par.
16:14That nib is bouncy.
16:18You know, it's got what some would say that kind of springy, slightly flexy nib, which feels
16:28like a gold nib.
16:30So Ongdian, congratulations.
16:34You've made number 9.
16:36Number 8 is another Ongdian pen.
16:39It probably would have made higher up on the list.
16:43But I kind of think it's kind of a deja vu of similar models or materials being used
16:53as last year.
16:54So that probably what hurt the ranking of this pen.
16:59Because that number 8 nib.
17:01So this is the A9.
17:03with that springy, almost gold-like number 8 nib.
17:10It certainly gave it marks that well-deserved and that made it at least in the top 12.
17:18So once again, Ongdian, very good.
17:21One of the things that bother a lot of people is that, as you can see, that line doesn't
17:25quite line up.
17:28And you have to kind of, there's a way to do this.
17:30So it does.
17:31There you go.
17:31I just get it by accident.
17:34But that's one of the things I think that people didn't like about this pen.
17:39But having said that, look how gorgeous it is.
17:41It's got some good heft.
17:42It's got a number 8 size nib.
17:44So well-deserved of being a nominee.
17:48Number 7 on my list is this other controversial Jin Ao, Tian Dao.
17:54Now, some people don't like the guitar glib.
17:57I think it's a nice touch.
17:59Don't forget, this is my top Chinese pens.
18:04So Jin Ao, Tian Dao, I believe is how they refer to it.
18:10It's got that number 8 size, very juicy nib.
18:16By the way, do you like this ink?
18:18This is the Ongdian Purplish Red.
18:20I'm going to be doing a video on all the Ongdian inks.
18:25I think they're very, very well worthy of mention.
18:30So, but gorgeous, gorgeous combination.
18:33I think this pen with the number 8 size nib, which is smooth and that huge, huge converter,
18:40kind of, you know, similar to the 90-19, well-constructed, well-made.
18:47I like this pen.
18:48Number 7.
18:50Number 6.
18:51Well, another lemon pen that's kind of a little bit controversial because it kind of mimics
18:57and it's a great, greatly inspired by another Mont Blanc, but it's this Lemon M5 with this
19:08really nice architect nib.
19:10This pen is so comfortable, both in weight and shape and girth and length.
19:23It's just, for me, it's kind of an ideal, an ideal look.
19:28And it's got this faceted cap that can put some weight to it.
19:33It doesn't post and that's probably why it hurt, you know, it lost some points.
19:38But a very well-made pen, regardless of where it was inspired, and that's maybe why it's
19:45at number 6 and not higher up.
19:47But otherwise, I can tell you, folks, this is a winner.
19:50This is a real winner.
19:52So that's number 6 on my list.
19:54Now we're getting closer.
19:56Number 5 on my list is this Majon P139.
20:02I think, again, Majon is inspired by a Mont Blanc.
20:08But nonetheless, a very well-built, so this is the P139, with that number 8 size nib.
20:21You can get a number 6 if you wish, but I certainly would recommend the number 8.
20:26The nib is juicy, wet, performs really well.
20:33It's got a little spring in it.
20:35Everyday pen, piston filler with a piston window.
20:39Very well done.
20:41I would have liked to see this resin be a little more like the white version, which, by the
20:46way, I've ordered, but it hasn't come in yet.
20:48I wanted to get it for this review, but it just, with the postal strike in Canada, it
20:57just kind of backlogged things.
20:59The resin on the white apparently is a little more crushed ice look rather than this flat
21:05looking orange.
21:07But having said that, really nice pen, high marks for Majon.
21:14Next on my list.
21:16Okay, here's where we're going to play some, have some fun.
21:19This is the AdMoc, so first of all, number 4 is the AdMoc M800, which, of course, is an
21:34imitation of the Pelican M800.
21:41It comes in different looking resins.
21:46This is the, what it originally comes in.
21:50In other words, it comes in with a Schmidt nib, and I chose a Schmidt broad here.
21:54You can tell how thick and juicy.
21:56Very nice nib, smooth.
21:59One of my favorite nibs, and one of the most underrated nibs, that Schmidt nib.
22:04The pen is very well done.
22:07Unfortunately, too well done.
22:10It's got good weight.
22:11It's got very nice features, which heavily inspire themselves from the original.
22:19And speaking of the original, here's another version of the same one, which, of course,
22:25looks very nice with that blue resin there.
22:31But what I've done, folks, and a surprise for all of us, take a look.
22:37Take a look under the hood, what it's got.
22:40Yes, sir.
22:41It's got a Pelican M800 18-carat nib.
22:50It's not the dual tone.
22:51It's just a plain chrome colored, but it's gold.
22:58Shaq did a similar swap where he put the M800 nib into one of the titanium offerings, the TI-136 from Magon.
23:14But it needs an adapter for the BOC setting.
23:20This one, I was able to insert it in the Schmidt nib section without any difficulty.
23:29I thought it would leak on me because it looked like it just went in just a little too loose, but it hasn't leaked.
23:36I used the original feed of the Schmidt feed.
23:39I did not use the feed that came with that nib.
23:43But let me tell you, this swap is just fabulous.
23:53With the original nib, original Pelican nib, makes it such that, you know, I get the writing experience of the real thing
24:06because the size apparently is just, size and feel is bang on without the price tag, you know.
24:15So this AdMog may have cost me $50 US.
24:18And that nib, folks, at Giardino Italiano, they have sales once in a while.
24:23I picked up at 145 euros, so roughly $150.
24:28Normally, those nibs go over $250 for sure.
24:32So there you have it.
24:33Now I have, it's even closer to the Pelican M800.
24:39I thought I'd share that with you.
24:41So there you have it.
24:42That's, that's number four.
24:44Okay, so where are we now?
24:46We're at number four.
24:48Well, we're going to go to the next page and we'll take a look at the last three.
24:52Okay.
24:53The number three on my list is this Manjohn Titanium TI-136.
24:59just an absolutely beautiful pen.
25:02I've got to tell you, it's got, it's a piston filler, nice, nice ink window.
25:07And it's got this lemon long blade or long knife, but kind of an architect grind to it.
25:15I was not fond of those architect types of nibs.
25:19I couldn't write with them, but with this one, I can.
25:21So this is the number three.
25:24Congratulations, Manjohn.
25:26It's Manjohn TI-136.
25:36But take a look at this, folks.
25:37It is just so juicy.
25:41What a beautiful nib.
25:50And the ink, of course, is Manjohn, is a Manjohn ink.
25:54So it kind of really, really, really pleased with this.
25:58I think it's an absolutely gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous pen.
26:04Really nice feel.
26:06And this is the one that Shaq kind of modified and upgraded the nib with the Pelican nib.
26:11I may want to do that.
26:13Take that Pelican nib.
26:14I've ordered the box section that accommodates that nib with its feed from Flexi Nibs.
26:22I think it's called Flexi Factory or Factory Flexi Nibs, whatever it is.
26:26And I received the section, so I may very well do the swap and see if there's a different
26:33writing experience there.
26:35But there you have it.
26:36The TI-136 is number three on my list.
26:41Well, number two, another titanium nib.
26:44This is a Asvine Giant, folks.
26:47Again, piston filler with a window.
26:50And now Asvine has a YOWO offering.
26:55So that was number three.
26:57Sorry, I forgot to put number three.
26:59Number two is this Asvine J-16 with a YOWO nib now.
27:12And, you know, the Asvine nibs are probably among the best in the Chinese pen market.
27:19But with the fact that they now offer the YOWO at that price, folks, I think we've got
27:27a winner here.
27:28That's why it's number two, anyway.
27:32And very nice weight.
27:37It's got quite a bit of heft and length.
27:43Is it inspired by a kind of a bigger than a 146 and smaller than a 149?
27:50So somewhere in between.
27:52But very well made pen.
27:54It's an Asvine.
27:55It's Asvine quality, of course.
27:57I really, really recommend it.
28:01You cannot enjoy Chinese nibs fully without purchasing this one.
28:07This one is a must, folks.
28:09If you're thinking about which pen to get, you'll have lots of fun writing experience.
28:15Which, by the way, that section is very sticky.
28:19So it's not shiny and slippery at all.
28:25And, oh, and I forgot to mention, all these pens have been reviewed by me.
28:29So you can look for those reviews on my channel if you want a more in-depth review.
28:39Number one.
28:40That takes me to number one.
28:42And that kind of explains why I have four of them.
28:46This is the Asvine V200.
28:49I've been applauding this pen ever since it came out.
28:53Right from the outset, I said it might make my pen of the year.
28:58And it has.
28:59I've got to tell you, it's titanium.
29:02It's got that beautiful transparent resin.
29:05It's a vacuum filler.
29:06It works very well.
29:08It's very well built.
29:10It comes with either Asvine or Bach nibs.
29:15The price is good.
29:17You've got varieties.
29:18You also have another variety in kind of an adonized titanium or, you know, when you change the color, kind of a rainbow color.
29:26That's possible as well.
29:28The beauty of this, though, in terms of my, well, let me first write with a Bach nib.
29:35So this black version or smoked black version, number one, is with the Bach nib that it came with.
29:47So this is the number one, and it's the Asvine V200 with a Bach nib.
29:59Very, very, very, very nice.
30:01I've got to tell you, this pen, because of its filling mechanism and the way it looks, the feel, the weight, the build quality is just beautiful.
30:13Now, some people have criticized the fact that it caps, but, you know, it interferes with that piston.
30:22And I don't cap my pens.
30:24It's not a major concern for me.
30:26And even if you do, you can still get it to cap, but I wouldn't recommend it.
30:32I think it's a beautiful, beautiful pen, and it's my choice for pen of the year.
30:38Now, what made it even more attractive is the fact that I was able to use the Bach section to purchase a fountain pen revolution ultra flex, ultra fine nib or extra fine nib, the chrome version, which is so springy and so flexy.
31:02Which has made this Asvine even more attractive in my view, because now this Asvine can be turned into a very nice flex pen, as you can see, with that fountain pen revolution nib as an option.
31:28I think it's made me even happier and that FPR ultra flex is, in my view, probably one of the better flex nibs on the market, especially for a steel, for a steel nib, number one.
31:49So there you have it.
31:50Number one, the winner is the Asvine V200 2024.
32:01Now, now that we have looked at all that, give me a second, I'm going to set up again, and I'll declare the winner of the Chinese pen maker of the year.
32:20Be right back.
32:20Okay, so we're back.
32:24These are all the pens.
32:25I've added a few, just because may not have made the best or the 12 nominees.
32:31But in terms of evaluating the pen maker, I think we have to look at some of their other offerings to kind of make up our minds.
32:38These are the Asvine pens for 2024, the J16 and the V200.
32:44As you can see, Magon has had four offerings, highly inspired, but nonetheless, four.
32:50Very, very nice contenders.
32:52There are others that I've not mentioned here, especially some of their capless or their, you know, the imitations of the vanishing points,
33:04which I don't like as pens to begin with, so none of them kind of made this list.
33:09Trammel has got at least these two.
33:13Undean has these three.
33:15There's also the A7 with a wood made of stable wood, which has been a disaster for me.
33:21It cracked on me.
33:22It's unglued, so I'm not even going to put it in this category.
33:26I don't think it's worthy of the Undean quality that we usually can expect from him.
33:32The Jinau has kind of slim pickings.
33:35They've got some thinner pens and stuff that they came out with, but that I don't believe are worthy of my mention for my collection in any event.
33:45They've got these two lemon nibs, and then, of course, they've got AdMoc.
33:48They came out with the M800.
33:50They came out with the M400.
33:52And they also got a nice offering in this Galaxy Blue of, you know, kind of a Jinau 100 slash Parker Dual Fold look.
34:02But, again, very well made.
34:04Comes with the Schmidt nib, which, in my view, is an advantage because it's a beautiful and underrated nib.
34:11So, AdMoc certainly is a player this year.
34:16Asvine has always been.
34:18Ongdean has always been.
34:20But my pen maker of the year, Chinese pen maker of the year, has got to go to Magon.
34:26I think Magon is the one that's given us the most offerings that are worthy of mention.
34:32Yes, they're heavily inspired.
34:33But, nonetheless, these are pens for those folks who just don't want to spend $2,000 on a Hemingway, or $1,000 on a Mont Blanc 146, or $1,500 on an Omas 360, or, and I forget, I think it's another writer's pen from Mont Blanc, which is in the thousands of dollars.
34:57You know, these are great offerings.
34:59I think these, the fact that Magon has provided that number of offerings, Ongdean has kind of slowed down.
35:06Now, I understand there are rumors that maybe one of these companies is going through some financial issues and may disappear, and I certainly hope not, because they're all worthy of mention.
35:19And I don't want to spread false rumors, but that's what I read.
35:22But, certainly Ongdean, compared to last year, which was my pen maker of the year, is kind of slim picking for this year.
35:31I, Asvine, only came out with two.
35:33I understand there's a brand new one, Stablewood Asvine, that I've been looking at almost on a daily basis, in the hope of being able to include it in this year-end review.
35:46But, didn't receive it, didn't see it, I think it's out in China, but not out for North American markets yet.
35:53So, it will probably have to go into my 2025 picking, and maybe make that nominee for next year.
36:02So, there you have it, my Chinese pen of the year is the V200 from Asvine, and my Chinese pen maker of the year is Majon.
36:17So, there you have it, folks.
36:19I hope you enjoyed this first award show.
36:23Several more to come.
36:25Yeah, that's my choice for this year, or my choices for this year.
36:29I think I had, you know, a lot to choose from, but at the end of the day, that's my choice, folks.
36:36I hope you agree, but please, leave in your comments, who's the Chinese pen maker of the year for you, folks, or which company?
36:46And which pen, Chinese pen, did you enjoy the most this year?
36:50Please, weigh in on this.
36:52We'll take a little poll at the end of the day, and maybe, maybe we'll agree, and maybe we'll disagree.
36:57But that's the fun, that's the fountain pen therapy at the end of the year that I think we should all share.
37:04So, without further ado, please enjoy your holidays, whether it's Christmas, or any other holiday, or whether it's welcoming the New Year 2025.
37:15I enjoy every minute of this passion of mine.
37:21I hope you do the same.
37:23And let's celebrate our community, and let's celebrate fountain pen therapy.
