00:09PANTERA
00:12I'm watching from so long
00:17I'm an amazing Anhemaker
00:18I saw this
00:20I was doing this
00:21I was doing this
00:23It's awesome
00:24I was doing this
00:26It was a live show, but I was interviewed before the live show.
00:33It's so big!
00:35If you look at it, I'll see you soon.
00:47Today, I met with Pantera.
00:50I can't believe I'm being sandwiched by Pantera, oh my god.
00:57And nice to see you in Japan. Welcome to Japan.
01:00Good morning.
01:01Good morning.
01:02It's morning in Texas.
01:04Oh yeah, oh yeah.
01:05Are you jet lagged?
01:06A little bit.
01:07A little bit?
01:08Not too bad.
01:09And when did you arrive here?
01:11Last night?
01:12No, we got here about two or three hours ago, man.
01:15Oh really?
01:16Just arrived.
01:17Just got here.
01:18Must be a hard day then.
01:1914 hour plane flight, a long way.
01:22And when did you have your last show?
01:24Last show was on the 21st of May in Paris, France at Le Zénith.
01:32And so you had some time off?
01:34Yeah, we had about three and a half weeks off.
01:37Alright, cool.
01:38And then, so how was the world tour so far?
01:42Well, we've only done Europe so far.
01:44We did six weeks over there.
01:45It was absolutely fantastic.
01:47The fans were fucking great.
01:49We had a blast and now you guys get us.
01:51And then we start on the Oz Fest July 2nd.
01:54Oz Fest, yeah.
01:55I'm going to ask you about that later.
01:57But the first show in Japan, actually tomorrow, is Bay Hall in Yokohama.
02:04And that is, um, a quite small club, right?
02:09And, uh, how often do you do, uh, your live shows on tour in a small club?
02:15We love any venue from small to big.
02:19We'll ever kick your fucking ass.
02:21We did some, uh, 10,000 seat places in Europe.
02:24We did some 6,000 seat places.
02:26And we did a couple that were about the size of the place tomorrow night.
02:28So, uh, it's, yeah, it's no different to us if it's 1,000 people or if it's 10,000 people.
02:34You know, it's just, uh, as long as it's a full house, we're ready to play.
02:38Well, it must be a riot tomorrow night.
02:41I heard that place gets down, so.
02:44It looks great.
02:45What are you?
02:47So, kick Japanese ass.
02:48Yeah, a bunch of lids kicking.
02:50Uh-huh.
02:51Alright.
02:52And, um, Hiro Arishima, um, interviewed you, um, maybe a few months ago.
02:59And we had, um, your interview on our show, uh, a few weeks ago.
03:03And there has been a lot of requests for Pantera on our program.
03:07All right.
03:08Mm-hmm.
03:09Awesome.
03:10A lot.
03:11I mean, a lot.
03:12So, um, how, what can the kids expect for the show for the Japanese tour?
03:20Well, there's something that they can always expect from us.
03:23A pure, raw, kick-ass concert.
03:25You know, we never, uh, have been about laser light shows or flame-breathing dragons or anything
03:30like that.
03:31It's always been us, the amps, and, uh, the fans, you know.
03:34And that's what we're gonna give them.
03:35We're gonna give them a good dose of, uh, all of these right here.
03:38Yeah.
03:39We're gonna give you a full breath of that right there.
03:41And, uh, then when we get done, we're gonna go have a good time here in Tokyo.
03:46So, a pure, heavy metal rock and roll show.
03:48That's right.
03:49That's right.
03:50Blood, sweat, and fear, buddy.
03:51Right.
03:52And I have all of your CDs right here.
03:55And this is the new album.
03:57That's right.
03:58And I really like the jacket.
04:00Uh, and it's a really funny photograph over here.
04:04But, uh, I was wondering who this guy is.
04:07You really wanna know?
04:08Well, actually, I was just thinking about that.
04:11For a thousand bucks.
04:13If somebody can name his name on this TV show.
04:18There it is.
04:22So.
04:23No more said.
04:24No more said.
04:25And I was also really curious who this guy is over here.
04:29Same dude.
04:30So.
04:31This is actually Johnny Winter.
04:34Actually, this guy, uh, the record company hired him.
04:40We told him what we wanted.
04:41And, uh, they paid him $10 a punch.
04:44He got hit in the face 30 times.
04:46He made $300 and never met the band or anybody else.
04:50So.
04:51That's true.
04:52But who is this guy?
04:53Who is that, anyway?
04:55Who is this asshole with the drill in his head?
04:57It's the same guy.
05:00Is he the same guy?
05:02No, no.
05:03The same dude.
05:07Alright, so, uh, whoever got the answer got a thousand bucks from Rack.
05:12So.
05:13Absolutely.
05:14Whoever gets it right.
05:15I can get the album.
05:17Alright.
05:18Alright.
05:19Right.
05:20The Diceman.
05:21That's right.
05:22And, um, I heard that you produced, um, mostly all of this album over here.
05:29And, uh, how's it different, um, producing yourself or hiring a producer?
05:35I would say that it didn't differ very much because I'd co-produced the records previously, uh,
05:42with Terry Date.
05:43So I knew how we operated as a band and what we expect to get out of the material and our
05:49goals when we're in the studio.
05:51We're in the studio.
05:52So, it wasn't really that different other than the fact that it was just a little bit more
05:56of a looser environment.
05:57We really had an opportunity to take the time to write the songs, to rewrite the songs,
06:02to rearrange the songs, to really dig and get the best out of every song.
06:06So I think that all ten songs on that record were 100% quality, kick-ass Pantera songs.
06:12Mmm.
06:13And, uh, did it take more time producing yourself or...?
06:17I'd say if you condensed it all down, it took four to six weeks like all the rest of it.
06:23Mmm.
06:24But the fact is, is that we took four months doing it, six months doing it, mixing it all,
06:29because we took our time.
06:30We'd work two or three days a week and we'd go away from it and then come back and then
06:34have our new ideas about how we felt and make the changes to really get the most out.
06:39Whereas in the past, it was all very spontaneous.
06:42The first thing we came with was what we stuck with.
06:44We had to roll, roll, roll, because we had a deadline to meet.
06:47Yeah, until we were getting right in the studio, trying to put everything there.
06:50But Vince has always been there from the first and he knows the exact sound of what we need
06:55to have and, uh, he kicks ass.
06:59So, uh...
07:00The whole band kicks ass.
07:01Which do you prefer for the next album producing yourself?
07:05I hadn't even thought about it, man.
07:06I mean, we've done six weeks worth of touring and we usually do a year and a half, two years
07:10worth, so it hadn't even crossed anybody's mind yet.
07:13I mean, have no problems working with Terry Day again in the future or somebody else,
07:18but, you know, if we decide to do it on our own again, I'm prepared to go the nine miles
07:22that it is, because it's a long run.
07:24Mm-hmm.
07:25Okay, and, um, does producing yourself make any difference for the live shows, for the songs?
07:34Mm-hmm.
07:35I think this record in particular that we really, uh, we would stop and say, hey, is that
07:40gonna go down to it live?
07:42Is that gonna move a Pantera audience?
07:44And if it was something that we felt like was just gonna lay there, wasn't gonna move
07:47the crowd, we would toss it out, you know?
07:50So this is really geared 100% for the live show.
07:53Cut the fat off a little bit, so to say.
07:57Cool.
07:58Um, did you have, um, did you have a lot of songs for this album and, um, play it off?
08:05I would say it's about the same as every record, you know?
08:08We never have been a band to go and write 18 or 20 songs and hope 10 of them are good.
08:14You know, we've always shot for 10 or 11, I think the most we ever had was 12 on a record.
08:20Mm-hmm.
08:21And, uh, you know, if you take a lot of these songs on here, and if you diced them up,
08:27you could make two or three songs out of a lot of these, you know?
08:30Mm-hmm.
08:31Because so many bands, they find one groove and that's the whole song.
08:34These got so many parts and they take you to so many different places that, you know,
08:38each one of these songs could turn into two or three songs, you know?
08:41So that's...
08:42Concentrated.
08:43That's what I think makes these songs so special.
08:45There's a lot to listen to there.
08:47Cool.
08:48Okay.
08:49Alright, goddammit, we're fuckin' pants out!
09:04There's nothing special about it!
09:17It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:23It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:24It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:25It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:26It seems unfairly with no detail!
09:30I'm up to myself, all the shit to me!
09:40It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:45It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:46It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:47It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:48It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:49It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:50It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:51It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:52It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:53It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:54It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:55It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:56It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:57It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:58It seems unfairly a part of death!
09:59It seems unfairly a part of death!
10:00It seems unfairly a part of death!
10:01It seems unfairly a part of death!
10:02It seems unfairly a part of death!
10:03It seems unfairly a part of death!
10:04It seems unfairly a part of death!
10:05It's a dream to be sad
10:08It's a dream to be sad
10:26Reliving your own dreams
10:29If you first store the confusion
10:39You'll go to breath or turn away
10:46Cut into the world of breathless hell
10:56It's a dream to be sad
10:59What's over it's home
11:01In love in between
11:02It's a dream to be sad
11:05It must have fallen to dream
11:07I have to fear
11:11It's a dream to be sad
11:16It's a dream to be sad
11:19It's a dream to be sad
11:21This is a dream to be sad
11:27I'll tell you all about it
11:30Anytime you'll face the darkness
11:35The darkness is afraid to give
11:39But darkness is afraid to heal
11:43If we see back on the bed
11:48It's my personal
11:50What is it coming?
11:52And where am I?
11:53I'm wondering yet
11:55I know why
11:56It's paranoid
11:58Wressing yet
11:59It's my personal opinion
12:09It's a game to be sick
12:30A shot at his arm
12:33Ain't nothing between
12:35It's a game to be sick
12:37Ain't nothing to be sick
12:49Ain't nothing to be sick

22:26There's not one favorite play for Pantera to play.
22:31Every time we get up there, we kick ass every night, and that's all there is to it.
22:35Definitely, I think we found out that our music is international.
22:40It doesn't matter if we're in Europe, Japan, South America, Australia, the States, whether
22:47they understand the words or not.
22:49When that music starts, they feel the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that
23:02we're in the show that we're in the show.
23:02We're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show that we're in the show.
23:09That's like double what Woodstock was.
23:12And it was the first time a Western concert had been performed there.
23:16It was after they had their newfound freedom.
23:19And they treated us like Led Zeppelin, and they didn't even know who we were.
23:22We came out and started playing, and the crowd was awesome.
23:25So if I had to pick one, that would be it.
23:29You too.
23:30You too.
23:31Oh, yeah, absolutely.
23:32Is there any video footage of it?
23:34Yeah, there's actually a documentary out called for those about to rock.
23:37So it's one of those ones that's out of circulation.
23:41But if you look hard in your video store, you might be able to find it.
23:44It features some fine.
23:45It's on the DVD.
23:46We have some footage on it.
23:47Oh, yeah, yeah.
23:48We do have some footage on it.
23:49But it has some fine performances by Pantera, Metallica, and ACDC.
23:54So check that out.
23:56Cool.
23:57And the interview that you've done with Hiro Arashino before,
24:02somebody was talking about a show with Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath.
24:08And how's it like to play with Ozzy?
24:14It's a fucking dream come true.
24:17I'll say this, and then Rex will give you his dose.
24:19But when I was a kid, when we started the band,
24:22I had four bands that I dreamed of playing with.
24:24Judas Priest was the first one, and we got to play with them in 1990.
24:27We did their last European tour on the Painkiller.
24:30Then Kiss, we did their entire South American tour,
24:33which was just, like I said, a dream come true.
24:36And then Black Sabbath, you know.
24:38And for us to be, like, picked by Black Sabbath,
24:41to be like their permanent opening band when they did the States,
24:44Europe, and then the States again, was just a dream come true.
24:47And then the fourth band that I always wanted to play with,
24:50and it still may happen, is Van Halen.
24:52Van Halen?
24:53But only if David Lee is in the band.
24:55And now I heard he's in the band, so we're first on the list.
24:58Please let us come play with just one time.
25:00That's all that matters to me.
25:02Same deal.
25:03The whole thing with Sabbath, just what he said with,
25:10those are your idols growing up, and just to be in the same,
25:14you know, kind of peer thing with him.
25:17And, you know, Vinny's birthday, we're going to South America,
25:23and all four members of Kiss come up and go.
25:26They sing a cappella.
25:27Happy birthday.
25:28Happy birthday.
25:29That's wonderful.
25:30You know, that's unbelievable.
25:32And it just leaves a good, you know, good taste, you know.
25:36Just imagine Kiss singing happy birthday for you, for them.
25:41And then giving you the Kiss free book,
25:43and every single minute with all the autographs and everything.
25:46Unbelievable.
25:47Very good.
25:48So you have it in your living room?
25:49Oh, yeah, yeah.
25:51You better frame that song, baby.
25:53You haven't framed it yet?
25:55It's too big to frame it.
25:56I'm just thinking that's a pretty big thing.
26:00Oh, my God.
26:01That's awesome.
26:02But tell me about the Ozzfest 2000.
26:07Well, it's no different from any other Ozzfest other than just alignment,
26:12you know.
26:13But it's the greatest tour on the face of the earth.
26:15I mean, you play a day, you get a day off.
26:17You play a day, you get a day off.
26:19And there ain't any other tour out like that.
26:22I mean, that's the golf tour.
26:24We play golf in between every day.
26:26And the bands that are on it are fantastic.
26:29I mean, they get Godsmack, Static X, P.O.D., Kitty, Soul Fly.
26:35I mean, there's 19 bands.
26:36And a boy T-Bone from Methods of Mayhem.
26:38Yeah.
26:39They do his jiggy thing.
26:41Anyways, you get the Wizard of Oz land where they got all these shops and all this stuff.
26:48And they're gonna have just, there's all, it's just a really cool thing.
26:52The thing I like about it-
26:53It's grossing tours in America in the summertime.
26:56Right.
26:57The thing I like about it is it's all the heavy bands.
27:00You know, it's the only tour that's really geared around all heavy bands.
27:04So, it's a beautiful thing.
27:07So, do you feel any difference than playing in other festivals?
27:14We've played on some other festivals in the past and I felt like that they were really unfocused
27:23as far as what the audience was there to see.
27:25You know, because the bands were different kinds.
27:28You know, there was, like we did Donington one time and it was like Aerosmith, Xtreme, Pantera, Sepultura.
27:35I mean, none of those bands really would fit together on the same stage.
27:39And the same thing with the audience.
27:41They didn't know what to do for what band or however, you know.
27:44When we played on the OzFest before, all the bands are kind of from the same genre.
27:49And the audience is really focused and they're into it.
27:52So, to me, that's the best festival we've ever been.
27:56Then, anybody in OzFest planning for OzFest in Japan?
28:01Got to talk to Sharon Osbourne, she's the one that does it all.
28:06Then, please talk to Sharon.
28:09Yeah, we're desperate for the OzFest thing.
28:12And the first music video from your new album is Revolution Is My Name.
28:17And why'd you pick that for the first name?
28:20Cause it kicks ass.
28:23But, you know, every song kicks ass in this album.
28:28Especially the first one, I love the first one.
28:30Very, very, very original song.
28:35And the snare drum sounds like a gunshot.
28:39Yeah, yeah.
28:401K, baby.
28:43And any plans for another video for the album?
28:47We're contemplating Goddamn Electric.
28:49That is our next single, which has already been released in the States and is doing really good.
28:53I don't know what kind of radio situation you guys got going on over here.
28:58Hopefully it's better than it has been in the past.
29:01But if not, it's a good thing you got DICE in this video channel to watch.
29:05Alright, thank you.
29:06And then there is a whole lot of Pantera fans watching this program.
29:14So if you have some message for the Pantera kids.
29:17I just like to tell them thanks for waiting four years between studio albums.
29:21You know, although we were very busy during that time.
