00:00:00The Lone Ranger
00:00:30We're here outside Madison Square Garden
00:00:50for the 1979 World Karate Championships.
00:00:53To my right, one of the key organizers of the event, Aaron Banks,
00:00:57who, earlier in the week, created great controversy
00:01:00with his startling new remarks about the death of Bruce Lee.
00:01:04Aaron, I wonder if you'd mind repeating some of your remarks for our TV audience.
00:01:08Well, I believe Bruce Lee was murdered by something called
00:01:10the touch of death or the vibrating palm.
00:01:13This is where a person can touch somebody in a particular area of their body
00:01:16in a way that can reverse or change the normal bodily functions.
00:01:21The result is that within three or four weeks, the person will drop dead.
00:01:25So somebody was out to get Bruce.
00:01:27I think so.
00:01:28Perhaps he just was revealing too much of the Chinese martial arts.
00:01:32You know, like taking the mystery out of it all.
00:01:35The secret of karate is power.
00:01:38Internal power from the ear.
00:01:41The vibrating palm.
00:01:42How does it work?
00:01:44It's internal power.
00:01:46The Chinese scriptures call it the chi.
00:01:48The Japanese call it the ki.
00:01:50It's heat that emanates from the palm, right here.
00:01:52I see.
00:01:53And this palm is simply placed against any portion of the body,
00:01:56and death will result in three to four weeks.
00:01:59Yes, it could, and no one would know what happened to the individual
00:02:02as in the Bruce Lee case.
00:02:03Corner there put the cause of death as misadvention.
00:02:06Now, all misadvention means is that they really don't know what happened to the man.
00:02:10The one thing we do know is that Bruce was in too good of condition
00:02:12to die of natural causes.
00:02:13And it wouldn't have been a freak injury
00:02:15because he knew exactly where he was,
00:02:18what he was doing in terms of exercise.
00:02:20Now, what portion of the body is this palm placed upon?
00:02:23Could be any part.
00:02:24That's the year we think about it.
00:02:26It all depends on how strong the applied power is.
00:02:29Tell me something, Aaron.
00:02:29Are you able to do this?
00:02:31I'd like to think so.
00:02:33Before he died, Bruce was experimenting with it
00:02:35and showed me the basic principle.
00:02:36Are you saying, then, that Bruce was starting to find out
00:02:46too much about the vibrating palm
00:02:48and therefore had to be silenced?
00:02:50Something like that.
00:02:52One last question.
00:02:53Who do you think killed Bruce Lee?
00:02:56I really don't know.
00:02:58Uh, Aaron?
00:02:59Aaron?
00:03:00Aaron?
00:03:00This is Adolf Caesar, outside Madison Square Garden
00:03:08for the 1979 World Karate Championships.
00:03:17The touch of death is positive energy
00:03:19emanating from the palm of the hand.
00:03:21BEST KERNAL
00:03:44CASE!
00:03:48BEST KERNAL
00:03:50This was the scene one year ago.
00:04:09Madison Square Garden, World Karate Championships.
00:04:12Black belt champion Bill Louie is maneuvering for position against his opponent.
00:04:16And then suddenly, he grabs him in the eyes and twists violently, ripping them out from the sockets.
00:04:22And, in a dazzling piece of showmanship, tossing them to the crowd.
00:04:27Hello, I'm Adolf Caesar here at ringside to bring you to 1979 World Karate Championships.
00:04:33And the big question on everybody's mind is, who will be Bruce Lee's successor?
00:04:38And, can he live up to the legend of the king of the martial arts?
00:04:43For this evening's main event, is the welterweight division's championship round.
00:04:48Which most experts agree, will go a long way in determining the eventual successor to Bruce Lee.
00:04:54However, not everyone here agrees with that assumption.
00:04:58And tonight, and during the course of this show, we'll talk to many guests,
00:05:02who feel no one has a right to claim Bruce's king of kung fu title.
00:05:07So stay with us, it should be a fascinating evening.
00:05:10But, before I go any further, let me say a word about the extra special significance of tonight's competition.
00:05:18Last week, the tournament sponsors announced that they were dedicating this event
00:05:22to the memory and the martial arts legacy of Bruce Lee.
00:05:26Bruce Lee, perhaps the greatest karate expert of them all.
00:05:30Certainly, the most influential.
00:05:31In fact, many of the guests here tonight owe their skills to Bruce's dedicated training methods
00:05:38and his inspirational leadership.
00:05:41So you better believe, they'll be out there tonight giving their something extra
00:05:45in honor of their mentor.
00:05:47Shortly before he died, I did a series of interviews with Bruce.
00:05:52And in them, they show something of his philosophy of life and the martial arts.
00:05:57They also reveal what a special person he was.
00:06:02In this first one, he talks about the mind in martial arts.
00:06:07You must realize that 90% of the martial arts is mental agility
00:06:11and that your body is a weapon that can kill a man.
00:06:16Therefore, you must use this mental power to control your actions.
00:06:20So you're saying that the mind must be trained in conditions as well as the body?
00:06:26The mind must be cultivated so you can eventually know yourself.
00:06:32Well, how do you cultivate your mind?
00:06:35Mental exercises.
00:06:37Such as what?
00:06:38Yoga.
00:06:41And even Zen.
00:06:43Meditation helps.
00:06:45Then you're performing almost a sort of self-hypnosis.
00:06:49You make it sound so, so mysterious and elusive.
00:06:55But it's really not like that at all.
00:06:58Would you mind elaborating more on that?
00:07:01It's making the mind respond instinctively.
00:07:04You do this by eliminating all variables and behavior.
00:07:08Why are all these variables bad?
00:07:11They're too unpredictable.
00:07:13Well, that should make it interesting.
00:07:15Such risks are counterproductive to everything you're trying to do.
00:07:22Now, as I mentioned earlier, we have a title bout in the welterweight division later on.
00:07:26However, early in this week, a note of controversy attached itself to this match as well as Bruce Lee himself.
00:07:32Aaron Banks, Mr. Karate, and a key organizer of tonight's match raised new questions about Bruce's death in a series of interviews he gave this reporter, among others.
00:07:43His remarks not only enraged Bruce's friends, but also the managers of the two fighters who are fighting tonight here for the championship.
00:07:52They were furious because Banks later went on to imply that the touch of death would kill any heir apparent of Bruce, just as it did himself.
00:08:00They called it a trick to publicize the event and castigated Banks for worrying their fighters on the eve of the match with what amounts to a death threat.
00:08:10Recently, Banks demonstrated to this reporter the basic principle behind the touch of death.
00:08:18This is very difficult to do.
00:08:20It's not the kind of thing you get right away.
00:08:22The problem is you have to generate power from such a short distance and really can't depend on any momentum.
00:08:29You've got to concentrate.
00:08:32Concentration is everything.
00:08:34So there we have it, ladies and gentlemen.
00:08:36The stage is set.
00:08:37And tonight, we'll have the answers to these questions.
00:08:41Who will be Bruce Lee's successor?
00:08:44And will he meet the same fate as Bruce?
00:08:47A fate which Aaron Banks calls the touch of death.
00:08:52We'll talk more about this later on.
00:08:54But first, let's take another look at a remarkable bout from the past.
00:08:59This one hits badass Bonnie Lee against Fred the Flying Fat Man.
00:09:05The Flying Fat Man sure lives up to his name.
00:09:09This is a community or free sparring match where the object is to score points by means of unobstructed areas on an opponent's body.
00:09:18Like there.
00:09:20And believe you me, you can't get much more specific than that.
00:09:24And just behind me, down by ringside, is Fred Williamson.
00:09:28Looks like he's having a little trouble with his fans.
00:09:31I wish I had that kind of trouble.
00:09:32But seriously, folks, Fred will be with us later on to talk about his feelings towards Bruce Lee and also this event.
00:09:39So be sure to stay with us for that.
00:09:41Old Fred almost didn't make it here.
00:09:42It's quite a story.
00:09:45How much time do we have?
00:09:46Five minutes?
00:09:47Okay, let me divert for a second and tell you about it.
00:09:50It all started around 10 a.m. this morning.
00:09:52Yeah.
00:10:15Your 10 o'clock wake-up call, Mr. Belafonte.
00:10:18What?
00:10:23It's 10 o'clock, Mr. Belafonte.
00:10:25Time to get up.
00:10:2810 o'clock.
00:10:32The wake-up call was for 8 o'clock, not 10 o'clock.
00:10:39My name is not Belafonte.
00:10:42It's Fred Williamson.
00:10:44Two hours late.
00:10:54Damn.
00:10:59That's what I'm paying $200 a day for, huh?
00:11:04I gotta be downtown in 20 minutes.
00:11:08Fred, forget about it and get back under the covers.
00:11:12Yeah, that's a nice idea, baby, but I gotta get moving.
00:11:18But why?
00:11:19It's just a karate match.
00:11:22Yeah.
00:11:23That's all it is, all right, just a karate match.
00:11:26I mean, somebody's gotta be there to keep reminding him that that's all it is, just a karate match.
00:11:30I mean, whoever heard of fighting for a Bruce Lee title that don't even exist?
00:11:34Besides, I promised I'd be there.
00:11:37You've broken promises before.
00:11:40Last night you promised you'd satisfy me.
00:11:43And here I am, still wanting.
00:11:48Wanting what?
00:11:50I mean, ain't five times enough for you?
00:11:52Oh, Fred, let's make it a six-pack.
00:11:55Yeah, I'll call room service and get one.
00:11:58Please.
00:12:01Well, I guess they can wait.
00:12:06Belafonte is back with his dynamite new album, Reggae Riot.
00:12:11Listen to that Belafonte sound.
00:12:13Tatsy, Tatsy.
00:12:24If you don't mind, man, I'm in a hurry.
00:12:27This is my cab.
00:12:29I was here first.
00:12:33Look, I know you're Harry Belafonte and all that, but so what?
00:12:36I'm Jasper Milquetoast.
00:12:38Oh, hey, put me down.
00:12:40What do you think you did?
00:12:41Come on, square.
00:12:41Harry Belafonte with milk toast.
00:12:43Come on.
00:12:44I am not Belafonte.
00:12:46I am Fred Williamson.
00:12:48Oh!
00:12:53Eat me and people in New York,
00:12:55and I gotta pick Fred Williamson to start a fight with, huh?
00:13:01Shit.
00:13:04Oh, fiddlesticks.
00:13:06Well, I'll just have to walk to Plato's retreat.
00:13:11Hey, Fred.
00:13:13Need a lift.
00:13:24Thanks, my man.
00:13:25All right.
00:13:26This isn't my day.
00:13:28Hmm?
00:13:28First, the hotel doesn't wake me up on time.
00:13:31I can't find a cab, but some clown tries to pick a fight with me.
00:13:36Well, I'm a little late myself, but nothing short of a death in the family is gonna make
00:13:40me miss this event.
00:13:43Yeah, some event.
00:13:45Two cats fighting for Bruce Lee's title that don't even exist.
00:13:48I mean, that's kind of absurd, isn't it?
00:13:50Look, Fred, I just work for the TV networks.
00:13:53I don't have anything to do with it.
00:13:54I just call it like I see it.
00:13:56Yeah.
00:13:57Anything for high ratings, huh?
00:13:59I mean, if they want high ratings, why don't they just put me in the ring with you?
00:14:04Save your anger for the TV cameras.
00:14:06I'd like to get all of that in my interview.
00:14:08No, it's not anger.
00:14:09It's just professional concern.
00:14:11But don't worry.
00:14:12When the cameras roll, so will I.
00:14:14Well, put on your charisma, my man.
00:14:17Your fans are waiting.
00:14:47So will I.
00:14:48You.
00:14:48I'm.
00:14:51We'll be.
00:14:58I'm.
00:14:59We'll be.
00:15:02All right.
00:15:03Wow, Harry Belafonte.
00:15:32But he made it.
00:15:33Despite 101 obstacles and distractions which would have deterred any less determined man.
00:15:38So you better believe he's really psyched up for tonight's competition.
00:15:42And hold it, hold it just a second.
00:15:44There's been a commotion around here, I think.
00:15:46Yes, I do believe Bill Louie has just entered into the arena.
00:15:50Let's see if we can pick him up on one of our remote cameras.
00:15:53Bill Louie, he's quite a showman.
00:15:55And the crowd really loves him.
00:15:57And with good reason, too.
00:15:59For he's one of our most exciting martial artists.
00:16:02Here he is in a demonstration from last year's event.
00:16:06Many people think of Bill as a possible successor to Bruce Lee.
00:16:11Because of the strong physical resemblance and Bill's mastery of the Lee fighting form.
00:16:16But don't let that fool you.
00:16:18Bill's his own man with his own particular martial arts style.
00:16:23Notice, for example, the lightning quick use of hands and feet.
00:16:26Karate fans, watch this man.
00:16:28He could be number one before long.
00:16:31He certainly ranks up there on my list of karate champions.
00:16:36And now, we'll action treat for our television audiences.
00:16:39An exclusive interview with international film star and martial arts magician, Ron Van Cleef.
00:16:45Live from a gym here in New York, where Ron is currently training in future defense of his World Karate Championship.
00:16:51Ron, can you hear me?
00:16:53Good.
00:16:55Who would you say has been the most influential person in your life?
00:16:59Bruce Lee.
00:17:00I met him in 1969 at the national championship.
00:17:05He gave an exhibition.
00:17:07We talked about martial arts.
00:17:10He introduced me to the Chinese style, which developed my fluidity and flexibility.
00:17:16He also got me into movies.
00:17:23Nedman, Hong Kong, when he was doing Enter the Dragon.
00:17:32We became good friends and grew up in martial arts.
00:17:36And you've come a long way since then.
00:17:38I've been world champion three times.
00:17:40Twice as a middleweight and once as a light heavyweight.
00:17:46I've also won 20 tournaments a year as a black guy.
00:17:51Now, Ron, tell me.
00:17:53How did you get started doing this sort of thing?
00:17:55Uh, martial arts, that is.
00:17:57I've been involved in martial arts since 1955.
00:18:00My father taught me judo and boxing.
00:18:04One day I came home with a black eye and he told me,
00:18:07you better learn how to defend yourself, son.
00:18:10One of the striking similarities between the two of you
00:18:13is the dedication you both have toward training and building up your body.
00:18:17How many hours a day do you work out?
00:18:19I train five hours a day, seven days a week.
00:18:23I do a thousand punches and kicks on the heavy bag every day.
00:18:30Rigorous exercise is a must if your body is to be a weapon.
00:18:35You know, Ron, the question is often asked about him,
00:18:39that if he had lived, would he have been as great in action film stars,
00:18:43say, Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson?
00:18:46Do you think he would have?
00:18:48Possibly, but I don't think so.
00:18:50He was really interested in television.
00:18:53He wanted to get on another television series.
00:18:55Tell me, do you think there will ever be anyone like Bruce Lee,
00:18:59in terms of approaching his popularity?
00:19:02I don't think anyone would be as popular as Bruce Lee.
00:19:06He was the prototype.
00:19:08Everyone else is an imitation.
00:19:10I think everyone should develop their own style,
00:19:13an individual style.
00:19:15One last question, Ron.
00:19:17Do you think Bruce Lee died of natural causes?
00:19:21No way.
00:19:22The blow he received in the head.
00:19:24He could have been caught by any technique.
00:19:27The swelling.
00:19:31He just was like saying.
00:19:34I believe he was murdered.
00:19:36Thank you, Ron.
00:19:37This has been a most interesting conversation.
00:19:39But before we return to our matches, though,
00:19:41I wonder if you could show us another demonstration of your skill.
00:19:47The next beat is what I call the test of courage.
00:19:50I place two carrots on the necks of two of my students.
00:19:55And I will attempt to cut these carrots without cutting the heads off.
00:20:00Well, this should be something else.
00:20:03Are you ready?
00:20:04Yeah.
00:20:11Incredible, Ron.
00:20:12Absolutely incredible.
00:20:14Would you mind doing that trick again?
00:20:15I'm sure it was so fast, some of our TV audiences missed it.
00:20:20It's amazing.
00:20:23Ron is a complete athlete who practices his karate magic on the street as well as in the gym.
00:20:30Ron Van Cleef is total karate.
00:20:39Look at her moves. She's got glass in the air.
00:20:41Hey, baby, what you doing later?
00:20:43Pa, Mommy, stop wearing eyes.
00:20:44Yeah.
00:20:49Hey, babe, wait up.
00:20:51Girls like that are only good for one thing.
00:20:53That's the tightest little ass I've ever seen.
00:20:57She's good for only one thing.
00:20:59Hey, who's this motherfucker?
00:21:00These guys barbing you?
00:21:01He ain't gonna get her. We saw the person.
00:21:02Ugh!
00:21:03Oh!
00:21:04Come on!
00:21:05Come on!
00:21:08Hey, who's this motherfucker?
00:21:09These guys barbing you?
00:21:10He ain't gonna get her. We saw the person.
00:21:11Hey, who's this motherfucker?
00:21:13This guy's bothering you.
00:21:14He ain't gonna get her if we saw the person.
00:21:32How can I ever repay you?
00:21:35I'm sure Ron has some ideas of his own.
00:21:38But now let's go to the halftime show I promised you,
00:21:41the Bruce Lee story.
00:21:46As you've heard me mention,
00:21:47I was the first to spot Bruce Lee's talent.
00:21:49But if the truth be told,
00:21:51there were many signs of Bruce's ability
00:21:53long before I came on the scene.
00:21:55First, of course, there was the hereditary factor.
00:21:58Bruce's great-grandfather
00:22:00was one of China's greatest samurai master swordsmen
00:22:02of the 19th century.
00:22:04A fact which takes on greater significance
00:22:06when one realizes that Bruce was not only born
00:22:09under the same astrological sign as his great-grandfather,
00:22:12but that he was born on the same day also.
00:22:15As a result, his birth itself was an omen.
00:22:19An omen that became harder to disassociate himself from
00:22:22as he grew up reading stories
00:22:24of his great ancestors' legendary heroics.
00:22:27Heroics that could not fail to influence a young boy's mind.
00:22:31The
00:22:35MERS
00:22:37The
00:22:44The
00:22:45The
00:22:50The
00:22:52The
00:22:54The
00:22:55The
00:22:57Oh
00:23:27Ah
00:23:57Ah
00:24:27His lifelong obsession with martial arts
00:24:46An obsession that arose from romanticizing his ancestors
00:24:49Began to disturb his family
00:24:51The result was a confrontation
00:24:53Shortly after his 18th birthday
00:24:56When his older brother returned home to visit
00:24:58After a long absence
00:25:00Welcome home, Master Lee
00:25:08Things haven't been the same since you've left
00:25:10Park the car around the back, okay?
00:25:23Yesterday I learned some terrific maneuvers
00:25:25In karate class, Sue
00:25:26Hey, Bruce
00:25:28Bruce
00:25:30Jack
00:25:31Sue, it's my brother
00:25:32He's come home
00:25:33Jack
00:25:34It looks like he's been training again
00:25:38Ah, yes, he practices every day
00:25:42Kung fu is his whole life
00:25:44It worries your mother very, very much
00:25:46She doesn't know what to do
00:25:47No kidding
00:25:49Here's your keys
00:25:50Anything else?
00:25:51No
00:25:52Then I'll take your bags inside
00:25:54Jack
00:25:56Oh, Jack, you look great
00:25:58Ma
00:25:59Ma
00:26:00Guess who's back
00:26:01I missed you
00:26:04So much has happened since you left
00:26:06Karate classes are incredible
00:26:08Yes
00:26:09But the folks
00:26:10They don't want me to be a black belt
00:26:12Calm down
00:26:14There'll be plenty of time to talk about it
00:26:18First, let me say hello to Mom
00:26:20There's Mom
00:26:28I told you he'd come back, Mom
00:26:44He must have forgot something
00:26:48Perhaps his family
00:26:49Please
00:26:50It wasn't nice
00:26:55To run away the way you did
00:26:58I know
00:27:00Tell me
00:27:02Do you know what your brother's done while you were away?
00:27:05Yes, he told me
00:27:06More karate lessons
00:27:12Mother
00:27:13Why are you so upset over my happiness?
00:27:16Ah
00:27:16Your brother has some explaining to do
00:27:19Oh, brother
00:27:21Well, whose fault was it?
00:27:26Nobody's
00:27:27You have a short memory
00:27:29Who was it that plastered his walls with karate posters?
00:27:32I don't believe this
00:27:34Boy
00:27:36Don't let her bug you
00:27:46She does this to me all the time
00:27:48No kidding
00:27:49She doesn't know when to stop
00:27:52And Pop's just as bad
00:27:54I think they both enjoy it
00:27:55Bruce
00:27:57How can you say that?
00:27:59Your mother still deserves some respect
00:28:01Nothing's changed
00:28:05Boy
00:28:12It's great to have him back, isn't it?
00:28:14It's great to have him back
00:28:16Ma
00:28:17Ma
00:28:17Are you feeling okay?
00:28:19Ma
00:28:21I wish you'd look at this from my side
00:28:27We're lucky to be the heirs of a great fighting tradition
00:28:31I just want to follow
00:28:34In their footsteps
00:28:36And get yourself killed
00:28:39Ma
00:28:42Karate is our family tradition
00:28:44Just like our business
00:28:46Besides
00:28:47It's much more exciting
00:28:49I'm sure that's just how his great-grandfather felt in his days of glory
00:28:53Hello?
00:29:10Oh my God
00:29:12Oh my God
00:29:13Ah
00:29:14Mm-hmm
00:29:15Hello?
00:29:16Oh my God
00:29:17I wish to challenge him to kill him as he killed Ting-Tao-Ching.
00:29:42The man I want is Moyen-Chan, the rest of you stay out of my way or you will die.
00:30:03Go, kill him!
00:30:27Moyen-Chan, Moyen-Chan!
00:30:30Cowards, show yourself!
00:30:33Or all your men will die like them!
00:31:00If you only knew...
00:31:07Knew what?
00:31:09I don't understand you.
00:31:16Hey, Ma, can I go to the karate matches?
00:31:18You'll have to ask your father.
00:31:19Ma, you should have seen me in karate class today.
00:31:21What happened?
00:31:22Well, I got my black belt.
00:31:26Bruce, that's very good.
00:31:27Proud of me?
00:31:28Of course.
00:31:29Ma!
00:31:30Ma!
00:31:31Ma!
00:31:32Ma!
00:31:33You should have seen me in karate class today.
00:31:40What happened?
00:31:41Well, I got my black belt.
00:31:46Bruce, that's very good.
00:31:48Proud of me?
00:31:49Of course.
00:31:50Ma!
00:31:51What's so funny?
00:31:52Pretty soon I'll be as good as great-grandfather was and carry on in the fighting tradition.
00:31:55Can't you see you're over-romanticizing again, Bruce?
00:31:56I think it's exciting.
00:31:57Well, you'd think that.
00:31:58I'm not a baby anymore.
00:31:59You know I can think for myself.
00:32:00I'm the best fighter there is.
00:32:01I can whip anyone.
00:32:02I can whip anyone.
00:32:03I can kill with my bare hands.
00:32:14You don't understand me.
00:32:16I know exactly how you feel, dear.
00:32:19Old boy, I'm the best fighter there is.
00:32:22I can whip anyone.
00:32:24I can kill with my bare hands.
00:32:27You don't understand me.
00:32:29I know exactly how you feel, dear.
00:32:32Old boys go through this stage, you know.
00:32:34What stage?
00:32:36This is what I want to do with my life.
00:32:38Oh, you're so silly, Bruce.
00:32:41She's humoring me.
00:32:43She's got it all wrong.
00:32:45That isn't the way it was back then.
00:32:53You haven't a chance.
00:32:55I'll overcome you all.
00:32:57Man.
00:33:27Oh
00:33:57I can't take it anymore
00:34:27Why don't we run away Sue
00:34:29I had a hard enough time sneaking off
00:34:31To meet you tonight
00:34:32My brother doesn't like you
00:34:34He thinks you should get a job
00:34:36Sue, Sue
00:34:43Wait a second
00:34:44Please Bruce, not now
00:34:47Sue
00:34:49I have tickets to the karate matches
00:34:51Don't you want to go with me?
00:34:54I've saved plenty of money
00:34:55No
00:34:57Keep your money
00:34:58Use it for your karate lessons
00:35:01Oh, this is for you
00:35:02I was wrong
00:35:06I'm sorry
00:35:08It's been very selfish of me
00:35:10Please forgive me
00:35:12Oh, Bruce
00:35:14I know that
00:35:15I'm no longer the most important thing in your life
00:35:18Please, Sue
00:35:19Don't force me to make a choice
00:35:21Please, let's not discuss it anymore
00:35:25But Sue, we've got to have an understanding once and for all
00:35:27Hey, Bruce
00:35:28Come over here
00:35:29I want to talk to you
00:35:30Stay out of this
00:35:37It's none of your business
00:35:39Bruce
00:35:40You're asking for a fat lip
00:35:41Come on
00:35:42Cut it out
00:35:43If you had some intelligence, you'd drop this guy
00:35:45He's karate crazy
00:35:47Wait a second
00:35:51I know how you feel
00:35:53I do sound a little crazy
00:35:55But I love Sue
00:35:57But I love Sue and don't want to hurt her
00:35:58I'll make good one day
00:36:00You have to be patient
00:36:01Give me a chance
00:36:03And I'll show you what I'm made of
00:36:05We've been patient
00:36:07We've put up with this karate talk long enough
00:36:10Now when are you going to go out and get yourself a good job
00:36:14You can't break boards for a living
00:36:16It doesn't pay
00:36:18Ask anyone
00:36:19But you have it all wrong
00:36:21Oh, so I'm wrong?
00:36:23How much can you make?
00:36:25Can you support a wife and several children?
00:36:27Hey, you haven't finished high school
00:36:29You have no skills
00:36:30You have no training
00:36:31You can't do anything
00:36:33Sue's got to be crazy
00:36:36Why did she waste her time with a guy like you?
00:36:38You're a no-good, lazy bum
00:36:41You think you're such a smart guy?
00:36:44Fog off
00:36:44You're asking for it
00:36:45You're nuts
00:36:47Listen
00:36:48I'm saying this for the first and last time
00:36:50If I ever catch you talking to my sister again
00:36:53I'll take your head off
00:36:54Brother
00:36:55What's wrong with you?
00:36:58Don't listen to him
00:36:59He's only showing off
00:37:00All right
00:37:02I understand
00:37:05You really hate my guts
00:37:07But
00:37:09Let's not leave angry like this
00:37:12I'm willing to part friends
00:37:16I don't like European gestures
00:37:17Well, all right
00:37:20Well, now are you satisfied
00:37:24You insensitive brute, you?
00:37:26You'll thank me years from now for this
00:37:28No, I won't
00:37:29I'll hate you
00:37:30Like Bruce does
00:37:32We'll see what his father has to say about that
00:37:35Go home
00:37:36What is it?
00:37:44It's your son
00:37:45I don't want him going out with my sister
00:37:47He's putting crazy ideas into her head
00:37:49Oh, really?
00:37:53Crazy ideas, huh?
00:37:55Sure it isn't the other way around
00:37:56My sister
00:37:57She's a good girl
00:37:58And my parents and I think
00:37:59She has too bright a future
00:38:00To throw it away
00:38:01To throw it away on a lazy daydreamer
00:38:03Like your son, Bruce
00:38:03So, she's a good girl, huh?
00:38:09Then what about the delivery boy?
00:38:11That's nothing but gossip
00:38:12What proof do you have?
00:38:15How dare you stain our family name
00:38:17With all these vicious
00:38:17And tasteless accusations
00:38:19Either back up what you're saying
00:38:21Or I'll expect an apology from you
00:38:23This very instant
00:38:24Before I apologize
00:38:29Take a look at this letter
00:38:32That I just happened to have
00:38:33Chuck, last night was great
00:38:40Let's do it again
00:38:41Love, Sue
00:38:42My sister
00:38:43She wrote all of this?
00:38:47So, you see
00:38:48Your sister isn't the angel
00:38:51You thought her to be
00:38:51Is she?
00:38:53How dare you?
00:38:55Dad, what are you saying?
00:38:56Shut up
00:38:57You've said enough
00:38:58I'm warning you
00:38:59If you spread that letter around
00:39:00I'll kill you
00:39:01I swear to it
00:39:02I'll kill you and your rotten son
00:39:03His father realized
00:39:05That Bruce was driving everyone
00:39:06Karate crazy
00:39:07And felt it was time
00:39:09To have it out with Bruce
00:39:10Once and for all
00:39:11We now must talk
00:39:12We must clear the air
00:39:14Well, it's about time
00:39:16Now I'll be able to sleep at night
00:39:19I hope so
00:39:20Ah, then you won't be such a royal pain in the ass
00:39:23Right?
00:39:26Ah, Bruce
00:39:27Tell me, why do you like to hurt your mother?
00:39:32But I love mother
00:39:33Love your mother?
00:39:35Ha!
00:39:36You do nothing but bring her grief and sorrow
00:39:37You know
00:39:39If he'd been taught to respect us at an early age
00:39:41This wouldn't have happened
00:39:43Ah, what's happened to today's youth?
00:39:46Gone to hell
00:39:46Papa
00:39:48Do you mean to tell me
00:39:50That you never wanted to be like great-grandfather?
00:39:53A samurai warrior?
00:39:54The greatest samurai
00:39:56He was the king of them all
00:39:58Oh, I guess I thought about it
00:40:00Once or twice
00:40:01Then you understand
00:40:03Papa
00:40:04I want this more than anything in the world
00:40:07It's my whole life
00:40:09I want to be the best
00:40:11So you want to be the greatest?
00:40:13Don't you remember what I told you about the touch of death
00:40:15And how it haunted and destroyed your great-grandfather?
00:40:18Sure
00:40:18But that's nothing but a lot of superstitious mumbo-jumbo
00:40:21Ah, so you really think so, huh?
00:40:24Do you realize your great-grandfather's death is still a mystery?
00:40:27Huh?
00:40:27They found him by a roadside
00:40:30His body and face all distorted
00:40:31That's what the martial arts did to your great-grandfather
00:40:34He never had any peace
00:40:35His body and his pockets
00:40:57Come on
00:40:57Come on
00:40:58No
00:40:59No
00:40:59No
00:41:00No
00:41:01No
00:41:01No
00:41:02No
00:41:02No
00:41:02No
00:41:03No
00:41:03No
00:41:04No
00:41:04No
00:41:05I
00:41:30He will always have to defend himself
00:41:32It wasn't meant to be otherwise
00:41:38All this talking has made me hungry
00:41:40It's time I had some lunch
00:41:42Always eating?
00:41:44Is that all you can think of?
00:41:46I'm hungry
00:41:48But what about Bruce?
00:41:50Well, it's something to consider
00:41:54Give me some time to think
00:41:56Papa, thank you for understanding
00:41:58Papa
00:42:00Uh-huh
00:42:02Does that mean I can continue studying martial arts?
00:42:04Well, I don't know
00:42:06Well, then can I go to the matches this afternoon?
00:42:08Karate matches?
00:42:10Why, of course karate matches
00:42:12Oh, too
00:42:14I don't know
00:42:16Can I have something to eat for lunch, please?
00:42:18This is your lunch
00:42:22What's this?
00:42:23Consomme, doctor's orders
00:42:27Consomme?
00:42:30Can you bring me a steak?
00:42:31How do you want it?
00:42:32Medium rare
00:42:34You know it's no good for you
00:42:36Get it
00:42:37Uh-huh
00:42:39Papa
00:42:40Like I was saying before
00:42:42If I could go to the matches
00:42:43Shut up about these stupid matches, will you?
00:42:46Then you, stop your sulking now
00:42:50Uh, Bruce
00:42:52Did you finish your homework assignment on the art of the Ming Dynasty?
00:42:55Well, it's almost done
00:42:56Come to your room
00:42:57Yes, sir
00:43:01Hurry
00:43:02Right now
00:43:03Could I do it tonight?
00:43:04It should have been finished yesterday
00:43:08Please, Honorable Father
00:43:11No
00:43:20Sue
00:43:21Sue
00:43:22Oh, Jack
00:43:25Have you seen Sue?
00:43:26I think she went to the movies
00:43:27She should be back pretty soon
00:43:29Gee, that's odd
00:43:31We had a date this afternoon
00:43:34Sue
00:43:38Driving you crazy with all that karate talk, huh?
00:43:43Although Jack understood what Sue was going through
00:43:46She still sought other advice
00:43:48So she went to the wise old caretaker
00:43:50Who had long served the Lee household
00:43:52To understand Bruce's obsession with his martial arts ancestry
00:43:56It all began long ago
00:43:59In a remote village
00:44:00Where there lived an exciting samurai warrior
00:44:02A real legend
00:44:03A living champion
00:44:04I think it was a The living champion
00:44:06Here
00:44:07Ah
00:44:08Ah
00:44:09Ah
00:44:11Ah
00:44:12Ah
00:44:13Ah
00:44:14Ah
00:44:15Ah
00:44:16Ah
00:44:17Ah
00:44:18Ah
00:44:20Ah
00:44:21Ah
00:44:22Ah
00:44:23Ah
00:44:24Ah
00:44:25Ah
00:44:26Ah
00:44:27Ah
00:44:28Ah
00:44:29Ah
00:44:30Ah
00:44:31Ah
00:44:32Oh
00:45:02He was known as the greatest fighting warrior throughout the land, but his family was forever cursed
00:45:31However, that's only one side of the story
00:45:34For it wasn't long before Bruce's great-grandfather tired of killing
00:45:38And settled down with his wife and child to a peaceful existence
00:45:41This peace was often disturbed, for his reputation attracted many who sought his assistance
00:45:47Listen, Chan
00:45:48General High's death has created an important vacancy in our council, which I wonder if you will consider taking
00:45:55The fringe benefits are nice, and you'll be adequately furnished with the house of your own
00:46:00You'll be accountable only to his highness, with you on the counts
00:46:03You're quite generous, your highness, yet I must refuse
00:46:13If I go on
00:46:18There'll be no end to it
00:46:21There's been too much bloodshed
00:46:24Please
00:46:26I wish you to have this sword
00:46:28To protect your highness
00:46:30I would deem it an honor if you would
00:46:32Here
00:46:33I rather think you should reconsider
00:46:38For others may surely want to challenge you
00:46:41There is really nothing to reconsider
00:46:43No disrespect intended, your highness
00:46:46Our house is here
00:46:48As it happens, we are thinking of retiring
00:46:50I shall have my house to attend
00:46:52To a while, my husband will fish
00:46:55Bruce's ancestor, Chan Lee, spent the next five years living a sheltered existence
00:47:01That calm, though, was shattered when he confronted another in an endless parade of warriors who wanted to challenge him
00:47:07To be continued
00:47:23No wonder
00:47:26No wonder
00:47:27Right
00:47:29Joy
00:47:32Forgive the intrusion, Tan Chen Fei asked me to extend to you his warmest greetings,
00:47:47and Tan Chen Fei. I don't know the gentleman.
00:48:06Meanwhile, back at Chan's house, things were heating up.
00:48:16Your name is Chan.
00:48:19Chan!
00:48:21The gentleman thinks that we're just playing, eh?
00:48:26No, quite the contrary.
00:48:29Stop that, you hear? You take us for idiots?
00:48:33He speaks like a woman.
00:48:36That's right. You mustn't be angry with her, Lu Chao. You might get the little girl mad at her.
00:48:46She just needs a little gentle prodding, that's all, and she'll come with us piecemeal. Isn't that all, Lu Chao?
00:48:53Why do you always ask me?
00:48:56Let's show this little man who we are.
00:49:03We are the warriors known as the H.C. Lonesters.
00:49:08Let us show them a thing or two.
00:49:10Let us show them.
00:49:20Let us show them.
00:49:33you
00:49:35oh
00:49:37yeah
00:49:41yeah
00:49:45yeah
00:49:49yeah
00:49:51yeah
00:50:03Mamie!
00:50:11Randi, what happened?
00:50:13She was attacked quite brutally.
00:50:15They came to your house.
00:50:17No. No. No!
00:50:21To Chan, this meant only one thing.
00:50:25Revenge.
00:50:27Jack.
00:50:37I'm leaving home.
00:50:39What?
00:50:41I'm running away from home, Jack.
00:50:43It's the only way to follow in the footsteps of great-grandpa.
00:50:47And so, Bruce, with nothing more than the clothes on his back,
00:50:51left home to pursue his dream.
00:50:53Never to return again.
00:50:55Father, I...
00:50:57I know.
00:51:05It's Bruce.
00:51:07He's gone.
00:51:09He left me a note this morning.
00:51:11I never thought it would have come to this.
00:51:15And he had such a promising future.
00:51:19But all that is nothing more than a dream to us now.
00:51:23Nothing more than just a dream.
00:51:25A waste.
00:51:27Such a terrible waste.
00:51:31Papa.
00:51:33It was Bruce's decision to do this.
00:51:35Oh, it's all your fault.
00:51:37Why did you have to come home again?
00:51:39All he did was open all wounds.
00:51:41Well...
00:51:42But...
00:51:43He followed your example and ran away.
00:51:45But, Papa...
00:51:46I tried.
00:51:47Yeah, you tried.
00:51:48Oh, no.
00:51:49Tried like hell.
00:51:50No more.
00:51:51Those crazy ideas about inner peace that you brought home from the big city of God knows where.
00:51:53You crazy kid.
00:51:57Papa.
00:51:58Let's drop it all.
00:52:00No way.
00:52:03Sorry.
00:52:04Uh-huh.
00:52:05Perhaps you'd like to forget it was your fault, too.
00:52:10Well, he's on his own now, I guess.
00:52:14Papa.
00:52:15Like he wanted.
00:52:18I don't think you ever really understood him.
00:52:21I knew it just had to end this way.
00:52:24Maybe he'll find the happiness he seeks.
00:52:27He certainly didn't find it here.
00:52:30Yes.
00:52:39Maybe it was my fault I'm through judging him.
00:52:42Let our ancestors do that.
00:52:46After all, it's their reputation he has to live up to.
00:52:50His fate is now in their hands.
00:53:00Ahhh!
00:53:02Ah, oh, oh, you're a fool.
00:53:03Oh, I've got to.
00:53:06Uh, puto!
00:53:13Ah, ah pamię.
00:53:16Ah, ah, ah!
00:53:19Uah!
00:53:21Ah, ah, ah.
00:53:25Ah, ah, ah...
00:53:26Oh
00:53:56Come on, come on!
00:54:26He has a lot to live up to, perhaps too much. I hope he finds happiness.
00:54:44Well, there's nothing more we can do now.
00:54:56Upon leaving home, Bruce visited several Hong Kong film studios trying to find work as a martial arts performer.
00:55:05He knew this was the fastest way to build a reputation and gained the respect needed to become a samurai soldier of fortune, like his great ancestor.
00:55:14He had no luck until one day.
00:55:16What can I do for you, Mr. Lee?
00:55:18Do you have a job for me in your picture?
00:55:20It depends. What can you do?
00:55:22I can do karate.
00:55:24I'm also a practitioner of the other major martial arts.
00:55:29Jeet Kune Do, Aikido, Kung Fu.
00:55:33Some of this stuff involves stunt work and can be pretty dangerous.
00:55:36Will your family approve?
00:55:38My family has no say in the matter.
00:55:40I hope you're not one of those spoiled kids who thinks it's too important to get his hands dirty.
00:55:44There's no way.
00:55:45Then you've got the job.
00:55:47Now, like I told you, some of this stuff is pretty dangerous.
00:55:51You'll have to do a lot of hand-to-hand combat.
00:55:54Three or four guys are gonna jump you at one time.
00:55:56If you don't know what you're doing, then you're going to get seriously hurt.
00:56:00Now, I'm not promising you anything.
00:56:01This is a low-budget Chinese picture.
00:56:03But if it turns out okay, you'll get some international exposure.
00:56:07Now, from what I understand, they're putting together some sort of comic strip for American television,
00:56:12which features a martial arts character.
00:56:14So if you play your cards right...
00:56:16I could get an audition, possibly a contract, to appear in American pictures...
00:56:21Yeah, sure.
00:56:22...and become more famous than my ancestors.
00:56:24Right, kid.
00:56:25Uh, but one thing.
00:56:26Let's get this picture done first.
00:56:28Uh...
00:56:29Now, listen.
00:56:30Take this card, come to this address tomorrow morning,
00:56:33and we'll have the wardrobe department ready with your new clothes.
00:56:36Bruce did that film, and he did it well.
00:56:39He was a natural talent, with a tremendous charisma that movie cameras were able to capture.
00:56:44Here he is in a scene from that film.
00:56:51After that role, he was, as the producer promised, given a screen test for American television.
00:56:57Bruce Lee's screen test.
00:56:59Scene eight, take one.
00:57:01The results were overwhelming, and Bruce was immediately given a Hollywood contract.
00:57:08This was important, for it gave him the credibility he needed to be able to speak out on the martial arts.
00:57:14Yet, though Bruce was widely respected by his peers, he never did feel at home amidst the tinsel and glamour of Hollywood.
00:57:21All he really wanted was to popularize his great-grandfather's fighting techniques,
00:57:26and he felt the fastest way to do this was to become one of the world's most respected action-oriented film stars.
00:57:33American audiences got their first exposure of Bruce during the run of the Green Hornet TV series.
00:57:39Meanwhile, he was expanding his film career in a wide variety of motion pictures.
00:57:44During these early years, he created many memorable characters,
00:57:48the most popular of which was undoubtedly Cato.
00:57:56The Throne of the Green Hornet TV series
00:57:57on the White Hornet TV series.
00:57:58.
00:57:59.
00:58:01.
00:58:02.
00:58:03.
00:58:04.
00:58:05.
00:58:07.
00:58:09.
00:58:10.
00:58:11.
00:58:12.
00:58:13Ain't nothing happening here today.
00:58:24Hey, look at that.
00:58:25Check it out.
00:58:26What you got?
00:58:31Shit.
00:58:32Fucking cantaloupe tits.
00:58:36I sure love to get my hands on some of that.
00:58:38What are you waiting for?
00:58:39Come on.
00:58:40Hey, let's get the guys.
00:58:43Come on.
00:59:00Hey.
00:59:01Hey, I got a tending surprise for you, baby.
00:59:04Oh, Jesus.
00:59:05Oh, look at that tits.
00:59:07Oh, confusing.
00:59:08Oh, my God.
00:59:13That's all.
00:59:14Oh, honey.
00:59:15Hey, hey.
00:59:16Hey, оперat.
00:59:17Hey.
00:59:18Hey, I need more money.
00:59:27Hey, hey.
00:59:28Hey, retire on your resume.
00:59:32Hey.
00:59:33Hey.
00:59:34truck.
00:59:35Are you spoke Gandhi?
00:59:37You chose L iteration of the story?
00:59:38Hey, hey, how was it?
00:59:51Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
01:00:08Oh, my God, just please.
01:00:10Please, but tell me.
01:00:15Please, please, please!
01:00:22Oh, my God, this guy's bothering you?
01:00:37Yeah.
01:00:39You guys have no class.
01:00:43Who's this clean cut and bright eyes?
01:00:47You really shouldn't have done that.
01:01:07Cut your fucking ass.
01:01:28Holy shit, I'm getting the fuck out of here.
01:01:31Get out of here, man.
01:01:33Get out of here.
01:01:34Get out of here.
01:01:35Oh, my suit.
01:01:36My suit.
01:01:41You all right?
01:01:42My purse.
01:01:43My purse.
01:01:48Hand over the purse.
01:01:50I don't think my friends would like that.
01:01:54What brings?
01:02:01You're asking for it, mother.
01:02:02Let's get him, man.
01:02:03Come on, Pop.
01:02:04Come on, let's get this sucker.
01:02:06Let's get him.
01:02:07All right.
01:02:08All right.
01:02:09Get out of here.
01:02:10Get out of here.
01:02:11Come on.
01:02:12Come on.
01:02:13Come on.
01:02:14Come on, boy.
01:02:15Come on.
01:02:16Come on.
01:02:17Come on.
01:02:18Come on.
01:02:19Let's get this sucker.
01:02:20Let's get him.
01:02:21All right.
01:02:22All right.
01:02:52No, no, no, no, no, no.
01:03:22No, no, no, no.
01:03:52I believe this is yours.
01:03:54Why, thank you.
01:03:56Who are you, anyway?
01:03:59The name's Louie.
01:04:01Bill Louie.
01:04:02Thank you so much.
01:04:05I'd like to stay, but, uh, duty calls.
01:04:12Who was that man?
01:04:14I said his name was Louie.
01:04:16Bill Louie.
01:04:22That Bill Louie interpretation of Cato suggests another interesting aspect of Bruce's career.
01:04:39Namely, the incredible amount of emulation that Bruce Lee inspired.
01:04:43Few stars in any medium have been copied as frequently as Bruce.
01:04:48Some of the imitators were remarkably good, but none ever captured the spirit and charisma of Bruce's personality.
01:04:55Witness, for example, this clip of Bruce Lye, perhaps the most famously imitator.
01:05:00Although the moves are technically accurate, the power is noticeably absent.
01:05:04Let us gain more light into this, the key area of Bruce's personality from one of his friends.
01:05:11Aaron Banks, you knew Bruce well around this time.
01:05:15What was he like?
01:05:16We met while he was doing the Green Hornet.
01:05:18He was a great guy with a fine sense of humor, and he was always experimenting with new things in the martial arts.
01:05:23When you got together, what did you two discuss?
01:05:26Well, we spent most of our time complimenting each other about our various accomplishments.
01:05:33All finished.
01:05:35That's quite a scrapbook.
01:05:37You really accomplished a lot.
01:05:39Thank you, but I don't think so.
01:05:41You've done more in a few years than most men have done in a lifetime.
01:05:45Don't you agree?
01:05:46Nope.
01:05:47Aaron, it's you who've done a lot.
01:05:49You're the number one promoter of martial arts in the world.
01:05:51No, Bruce.
01:05:52It's you who's been the number one promoter of martial arts.
01:05:55Hey, while we're here, come on, show me that new maneuver you've been working on.
01:06:01Occasionally, though, you would show me one of the maneuvers he was working on.
01:06:04Watch closely, Aaron.
01:06:05It's a very fast and deadly maneuver.
01:06:08That is a pretty sharp maneuver.
01:06:11It's something I've been working on for a while, my friend.
01:06:14Is it related to the touch of that principle you recently rediscovered?
01:06:18A variation of it.
01:06:19How so?
01:06:21Psychological.
01:06:22Get it?
01:06:23Very much so.
01:06:25What are you smiling at, Aaron?
01:06:29That looks just like what one of my students at the Karate Academy is working on.
01:06:33He's working on it because I showed it to him.
01:06:36The extra footwork you added really gives it a whole new dimension.
01:06:40You better believe it.
01:06:42Splits the attention.
01:06:43It's really meant to distract you, Aaron.
01:06:45And I teach it to the fighters I train.
01:06:48Even though you're the best handler of fights around, I don't think so.
01:06:52Well, if that's the way you feel, I'll go along with it 100%.
01:06:56So you can see, Bruce was really a very good-natured fellow.
01:07:02Thank you, Aaron, for that interesting glimpse of Bruce's choir design.
01:07:05I know you have to get back to the scorer's table, so I won't keep you any longer.
01:07:09So, there you have it.
01:07:11The Bruce Lee story.
01:07:13The early years.
01:07:14Told by the people who knew him best.
01:07:16A colorful story which gives great insight into an often ignored, but nevertheless, critical part of his life.
01:07:22I hope you've enjoyed our little halftime show.
01:07:28Ah, but life goes on.
01:07:30So let's return to the present and another exciting match.
01:07:33This one featuring the incredible skill of Terry Yuka Higa and his Okinawa Kempo Karate Academy.
01:07:40Higa is highly respected by his peers for his insistence on maintaining the traditional aspects of martial arts.
01:07:46Yet despite this, he always manages to thrill his audience with some exciting new display.
01:07:52Like the one you're seeing now.
01:07:54It just goes to show you that the traditional and innovative can find a happy marriage in the martial arts.
01:08:03And now let's look at a scene right out of I Am a Fugitive from a Karate Chain Gang.
01:08:12Look at those tigers go at it.
01:08:14There's no love lost there.
01:08:17Now kids, I know this looks like a lot of fun.
01:08:20But I don't advise you to do this without parental supervision.
01:08:23It can be very dangerous.
01:08:25And now let's watch as a couple of Higa's students engage in a little freestyle sparring.
01:08:36You've undoubtedly noticed that they look somewhat like fences.
01:08:39But all that protection is necessary, for a stray kick can be just as dangerous as a sharp blade.
01:08:46This is a very good exercise in developing timing, balance, and overall coordination.
01:08:52Higa is a strong proponent of stressing the basics.
01:08:55And the skills of his students reflect that.
01:09:02Higa's students are setting up for their next demonstration.
01:09:05But what's this?
01:09:06The crowd in appreciation for the marvelous show he's put on is giving him a lousy ovation.
01:09:12Listen to those fans.
01:09:13But Higa's not one to rest on his wall.
01:09:16And he's already out there for his next demo.
01:09:20This is a two-on-one attack using sticks.
01:09:23Look at those moves.
01:09:24Reflexes so quick that his own body doesn't know what it's going to do next.
01:09:28Give him a hand, ladies and gentlemen.
01:09:30He really deserves it.
01:09:31And now, in keeping with Higa's penchant for innovation, he has prepared a real treat for us tonight.
01:09:45A feat never before performed in the United States.
01:09:48The crowd can sense the significance of this.
01:09:51There's an electricity in the atmosphere that's hard to describe.
01:09:55Higa is readying himself now, as his assistant places the sledgehammer.
01:10:01The other students are leaving the ring area to avoid any distraction and to give everyone the best possible view.
01:10:13The nervous excitement fills the air.
01:10:17Higa's assistant measures his stroke very carefully.
01:10:21The slightest miscalculation could shatter Higa's arm beyond repair.
01:10:25If this goes as planned, Higa's arm will split the boards in half while it's self-withstanding injury.
01:10:31He's done it.
01:10:36But wait, he's not finished yet.
01:10:38There are still some boards unbroken.
01:10:39They set up quickly yet?
01:10:41Yes.
01:10:41The remaining boards are shattered.
01:10:43What an effort.
01:10:44You can see how emotionally draining that was.
01:10:47But let's hope Higa can summon the strength to take one last bow with his students in front of this appreciative crowd.
01:10:53That Terry Higa, he's really something else.
01:10:56Don't you think so, Fred?
01:10:58I don't.
01:10:58As I mentioned earlier, not everyone here this afternoon feels that this afternoon's bout will accurately determine Bruce Lee's successor.
01:11:08Many feel that there's no way anyone can make such a claim to Bruce's title.
01:11:13Perhaps the most vocal of these people is the man sitting here next to me.
01:11:16I'm speaking, of course, about international film star and former pro football player Fred Williamson.
01:11:23Fred, would you mind repeating some of your views for our TV audience?
01:11:26Well, these are not just my views, Adar.
01:11:28These are the facts.
01:11:30And the fact is that this match is just another fight between two good karate fighters.
01:11:36I mean, it's an insult to Bruce Lee to think that either one of them could succeed him.
01:11:41Well, tell me, what about your martial arts background?
01:11:42Do you think you're as good as Bruce Lee?
01:11:45Why should I have to be?
01:11:46I mean, why should they?
01:11:48I mean, Bruce Lee was great at what he did.
01:11:51I'm fantastic at what I do.
01:11:53But you're avoiding the question.
01:11:55What about the martial arts?
01:11:56Do you really feel that you have the skills necessary to live up to Bruce's reputation?
01:12:01Look, Adolf, I do all of my karate fighting in all my films.
01:12:04I do all my stunts.
01:12:05I mean, they didn't call me the hammer for nothing.
01:12:08Well, Fred, you do present a most convincing argument.
01:12:10But as we both know, it's the public that decides these things.
01:12:15And it's been the public who has labeled this match the one that will determine Bruce's successor.
01:12:20Well, unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about that.
01:12:24But I feel that in order to achieve the success that Bruce Lee reached,
01:12:28one has to be physically developed as well as mentally developed.
01:12:31I mean, these two things have to become one.
01:12:34But in the meantime, we'll see one of my movies and you know what I'm talking about.
01:12:38Well, thank you very much, Fred Williamson, for your observations.
01:12:42And good luck in your quest to be the best.
01:12:46Right on.
01:12:48Let's get back to some ring action.
01:12:50Karate fans will recognize that man in red, white, and blue as Richie Barathe.
01:13:01What's this?
01:13:02One of his sparring partners appears to be hurt.
01:13:05Looks like Barathe put a little too much power into that kick.
01:13:08The fighters do wear protective padding,
01:13:10but that's not much protection against that kind of brute force.
01:13:14Fortunately for this fellow, he can manage to walk away from a kick like that.
01:13:17That's probably the worst stomachache you'll ever have.
01:13:21But seriously, folks, he appears to be okay.
01:13:24Barathe also looks to be regaining his composure,
01:13:27something he'll really need to do
01:13:28because they're now setting up for Richie's main attraction.
01:13:32Barathe is fast becoming a household name
01:13:35as a result of his recent appearances on the Johnny Carson show.
01:13:38It was there he smashed 13 climbing boards to pieces with a hammer fist,
01:13:43incurring in the process serious third-degree burns.
01:13:46He won't be performing that trick tonight,
01:13:48not because he's afraid, but because his doctors have forbidden it.
01:13:52In order to compensate for this cutback, though,
01:13:54he's added another board, bringing the total to 14.
01:13:58If he smashes this, it will be a new world's record.
01:14:01And what a record it would be,
01:14:03especially considering the handicaps he's had to overcome.
01:14:07For instance, when he was two,
01:14:09he lost the sight in one eye in a tragic accident.
01:14:12Loss of sight in an eye and perception,
01:14:14making even simple acts of coordination very difficult.
01:14:18Over the years, his peers have been amazed at his ability
01:14:21to maintain control over his techniques without depth of perception.
01:14:25Another handicap has been a serious blood disease he's had since he was 17.
01:14:29It's dormant now, but he's had to suffer through heart attacks
01:14:33and prolonged periods of incapacitation in learning to live with it.
01:14:37He's just about ready to begin,
01:14:39so we'd better lower our voices as the height of concentration is required.
01:14:42He's done it. He's done it. A new world's record.
01:15:05Richard J. Ballardy has beaten the best.
01:15:08He has every right to feel proud.
01:15:11Listen to those fans.
01:15:12They know what he's had to go through to reach this moment.
01:15:15Well, there's not much you can do for an encore after that,
01:15:25except just pick up the pieces.
01:15:30And now it's time for the big two and the big one.
01:15:33The main event for the welterweight full contact karate championship of the world.
01:15:37Louis Neglia versus John Cyclone Blood.
01:15:41A match much discussed in the press this week
01:15:43because of its claim to be the determinant of Ruth Lee's successor.
01:15:47And much discussed because of the entire touch-of-deck controversy which surrounded him.
01:15:52Here we seek not only a winner, but an answer to the following question.
01:15:56Will that winner in succeeding Ruth also inherit his so-called curse?
01:16:01And there's the bell.
01:16:12Both fighters are starting off cautiously, feeling each other out.
01:16:18Blood is undefeated in 15 bouts.
01:16:22Neglia has 30 wins and only two losses in full contact.
01:16:26And now look at Blood.
01:16:27He appears to be coming on strong with a series of uppercutting combination flurries.
01:16:32Neglia is waiting for an opening.
01:16:33Watch out, Cyclone.
01:16:34Neglia has beat up his attention to him.
01:16:35And there it is, his deadly king.
01:16:37Come on, come on, get him in the head.
01:16:39Blood is back on the offensive.
01:16:40Even though Blood is the champion,
01:16:42Neglia is the crowd's favorite tonight
01:16:43because he's literally fighting in his own backyard,
01:16:46having been born and raised in Brooklyn.
01:16:50Go, go, go!
01:16:52Go, go, go!
01:16:52They're really going at it now, toe-to-toe, trading punchers.
01:17:05Hey, look at this exchange.
01:17:07They're both taking a lot of punishment.
01:17:10But they're tough.
01:17:12They can take it as well as dish it out.
01:17:16Both fighters are on the attack,
01:17:18looking for that opening,
01:17:19which will provide a quick knockout,
01:17:20and there's the bell, ending round one.
01:17:25Boy, that was some exchange.
01:17:27It's hard to imagine how someone can last
01:17:29through ten rounds of that.
01:17:31By the way, each round is scored
01:17:33on a ten-point must system with three judges,
01:17:35the referee not being allowed to score.
01:17:39Word is apparently coming down from the press box
01:17:41that Neglia won the first round on a split decision.
01:17:45Two of the judges going with Neglia
01:17:46and one with Blood.
01:17:48And there's the bell for round two.
01:17:50Blood leads in with a hard right
01:17:56and sends Neglia bouncing off the ropes.
01:17:57He's covering up.
01:17:58Now Neglia's on their back.
01:18:00A right, a left, another right.
01:18:02And Blood is down.
01:18:03The referee is motioning Neglia to a neutral corner.
01:18:06Blood is obviously hurt.
01:18:09The referee is giving him a mandatory eight count.
01:18:14And Blood says he's okay.
01:18:16And they're back at it.
01:18:28This is turning into one pull of a bike.
01:18:30It's on the front.
01:18:45It's on the front, namely who's an officer.
01:21:26Perhaps.
01:21:28A successor to Bruce Lee?
01:21:31I doubt it.
01:21:34Well, you see, what most heir-apparents to Bruce seem to forget is that to be the best, you must beat the best.
01:21:42And Bruce Lee was the best.
01:21:44And he can no longer be beaten.
01:21:46So all else is just speculation.
01:21:50And I, for one, I'm glad.
01:21:54But why should we try to topple his legacy?
01:21:59Its existence, I think, has such a positive influence.
01:22:03To sum it all up, I cannot help but recall Ron Van Cleese's remark about Bruce.
01:22:08He was the prototype.
01:22:10Everything else is just an imitation.
01:22:15The secret of karate is power, internal power from the ear.
01:22:37The vibrating car, how does it work?
01:22:39It's internal power.
01:22:40I don't think anyone needs a body of space.
01:22:42Some of this stuff involves stunt work, and it can be pretty dangerous.
01:22:45I'm the best fighter there is.
01:22:47I can move anyone.
01:22:48I can kill with my bare hands.
01:22:50In order to achieve the success that Bruce Lee reached, one has to be physically...
01:22:54The touch of death makes a positive energy.
01:22:56And these two things have to become one.
01:22:58One.
01:22:58One.
