00:00Hi I'm Dan Grieve, head professional here at Woburn and we've got a beautiful wet
00:09summer's day here at Woburn and we are going to talk about the muddy lie which
00:14I know for a lot of you amateur golfers is a real difficult shot because it's
00:18so difficult to get that contact to get that ball first contact from these
00:22lies is really tough so it's really all about setup so if we get the setup right
00:25like all lies it becomes a lot easier so you'll see in some of the other videos
00:30we talk a lot about the bounce and how the bounce is really your friend and for
00:34almost all short game shots that's the case apart from this one really where it
00:38really becomes your foe so we need to make sure we're using more of the
00:41leading edge more of the sharp leading edge to make sure we can get that
00:44contact into the back of the ball when we start using too much to bounce off
00:48these lies the club just goes into the turf and the ball just goes the other two
00:52in front of you so like all short game shots it's critical that we get the
00:54setup right so if we if we look at this face on you'll see that the book the key
00:59here is the ball position so we need that ball position to be just back of
01:02center and let's make sure that the chest bone is a good couple of inches there in
01:07front of the ball because that really dictates the low point in the swing a lot
01:11of club golfers I see they get way behind it from these sort of lies so it
01:14brings a low point back and it's very easy to hit the ground first so the key
01:17there is ball position just back of center let's make sure the chest bones are
01:22ahead and shoulders nice and level as well when you start tipping this right
01:25shoulder also makes the low point appear too far behind the ball so nice level
01:29shoulders get the chest bone in front of the ball and the key here is that
01:34leading edge getting into the back and really think about your finish when you
01:38have a long finish you tend to release more of the bounce when you have a short
01:42finish or curtailed finish with a little bit more pace it just allows the
01:46hands to stay a little bit more ahead of the club head and get that ball first so
01:50let's see if we can play once a little a little bit like this
02:03a nice ball first contact it will go lower the ball will be fairly hot but
02:10that's the sacrifice for making sense of getting the quality that strike okay
02:13this is a really tough shot here okay but it is real life we do get it
02:17sometimes so really wet muddy lie to a tight pin so the pin there is only about
02:22four yards on now of course there's options here and really i probably would
02:25advise most of you to play a low shot there with maybe with an eight or nine
02:29iron running it into the bank try and take some pace off the ball but you know
02:33sometimes maybe you can't do that it might be a bunker there for example so
02:35you've got to try and play the higher shot so one of the things you can do is
02:39get the club selection right i've got my high toe 60 degree low bounce lob wedge here
02:44and what i really like about this wedge is how it's really shaved down on the toe so
02:48the bounce really is measured in the middle of the sole and
02:51and the toe there is shaved down so i can use that to my advantage here so
02:54i'm going to set up with the toe lower than the heel
02:58i'm going to face a little bit open but really put that toe down and address it
03:02slightly out the toe of the club as well
03:04i'm going to stand quite a bit weight to the left here so a good sort of
03:0830 degrees open with my feet and i'm going to swing the toe across the ball
03:13and i can hit just before the before it and the toe will nip under it
03:17and hopefully hit it nice and high so let's give that a go so
03:21high hands toe down and we're going to work across the ball
03:25that nice high shot and hopefully in up and down so
03:30really tough shot made easy by using the right club
03:33and the right technique
