00:00Jaw-dropping animated costume malfunctions and audacious cameos in the midst of promotional material
00:06are just a few of the single movie frames found harboring some truly brilliant discoveries.
00:11Gareth here from WhatCulture.com and here are 10 Movie Secrets Hidden in Single Frames.
00:1610. Betty's Boobs Make a Brief Appearance
00:19Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
00:21Proving to be the stuff of movie legend for many a late 80s and early 90s kid growing up around the time of its release,
00:27a great number of these randy teenagers will spend an awkward amount of time trying to accurately pause on the supposed moment
00:33a certain provocative animated character apparently flashed their screens in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
00:38Far from simply being an underground marketing tactic to nudge youngsters into taking in the flick time and time again though,
00:44Reddit user Tebazad was able to actually land on the infamous beat involving Betty Boop suffering an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction,
00:52beside Bob Hoskins' Eddie Valiant.
00:53Rather expectedly, this cheeky slip was edited out of the eventual home releases of the animated comedy,
00:59with only those who experienced the theatrical cut being exposed to those boobs for a single frame.
01:049. Spider-Man's Popsicle Face
01:06Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse
01:08Kicking things off with a rather brilliant opening montage highlighting how Chris Pine's version of the web slinger
01:13are coming to being.
01:14Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse wasted little time letting you know precisely what it was all about,
01:18as its signature brand of pulsating animation and razor-sharp wit bled onto our screens.
01:24Front and center was one particularly hilarious beat involving this Peter Parker noting how he was the subject of a
01:29so-so popsicle, which resembled what Spidey's mug would likely look like if smooshed by a tentacle-brandishing Big Bad.
01:36As it goes, that's precisely how it would look,
01:38with the talented folks behind the scenes lacing a brilliantly brief callback to that gag,
01:42in a brief skirmish between Spider-Man and Doc Ock not long after.
01:47If you pause the frame exactly at the right moment during said early highlight package of sorts,
01:51you'll see that Spidey's head pretty much lines up with that dodgy ice lolly perfectly,
01:55as he's strangled by his infamous enemy.
01:57And Phil Lord would even admit to this easter egg very much being a thing later down the road too.
02:028. Mel Gibson's Teaser Cameo Apocalypto
02:05Cameos come in all shapes and sizes.
02:07Some can be found in the background of intergalactic battlefields,
02:11others in carrot-chomping wonders in front of the cinematic lens.
02:15And then there's that time Mel Gibson decided to oddly lace himself into the teaser trailer
02:19for his upcoming 2006 historical epic by the name of Apocalypto.
02:23This was by no means simply a case of Gibson sneaking into a scene in full costume under fans' noses, however.
02:29If you hit the pause button at just the right moment in this teaser for the film,
02:32focusing on the decline of Mayan society,
02:34you'll spot the film's director posing alongside some of his cast members
02:38with a cigar in mouth for a solitary frame,
02:40all while grinning from ear to ear.
02:42It's without a shadow of a doubt one of the most bizarre tidbits to find its way
02:45into a feature's promotional material ever.
02:48But it certainly helped generate some online buzz for the impending project,
02:51even if it was in the form of folks simply wondering
02:53what in the hell had just flashed up on their screen for a fleeting second.
02:577. A Few Brief Monster Nods, Cloverfield
02:59For a film boasting a seemingly indomitable kaiju-like figure,
03:03wreaking havoc on a helpless population of citizens,
03:05Matt Reeves clearly felt it only appropriate to lace a few knowing nods
03:09to the monster epics of the past,
03:10at a number of flickering points in his found-footage sci-fi thriller.
03:14At numerous instances, when Rob Hawkins' camera jolts back to old footage
03:17from the Coney Island trip himself and Beth took together,
03:20freakishly fast cuts of a number of old-school monster mashes can be spotted.
03:24First up is one of the massive giant ants from 1954's Them,
03:28and that is ultimately followed by the Dino Critter from the Beast
03:30from 20,000 Fathoms later down the road.
03:33Finally, there's the nod to the undisputed king of the Mega Monsters,
03:36SozGodzilla, that finds its way into the flick towards the closing stages
03:40as the helicopter holding Rob, Beth, and Hood crashes post-creature lunge.
03:44Rather aptly, said Kong Flicker is none other than the moment
03:47the beastly ape yanks a plane out of the sky atop the Empire State Building,
03:51brilliantly alluding to the moment that preceded it
03:53in this gripping alien monster feature.
03:55Number 6, Barry studies his own rescue, Zack Snyder's Justice League.
03:59Finding the time to pause and rewind scenes when taking in a film
04:03that comes in at a whopping 242 minutes
04:05takes some serious dedication and commitment, it has to be said.
04:09And luckily for those DC diehards who simply cannot get enough
04:12of what Zack Snyder brought them,
04:14a particularly passionate soul managed to hone in on one rather sudden
04:17and sharp detail that likely went overlooked
04:20by those taking in the Mammoth movie as a whole.
04:22As picked up in a post on Reddit's always intriguing movie details page,
04:26when Barry attempts to rapidly save a bunch of scientists from falling debris,
04:30Snyder managed to sneak in a subtle flash,
04:32pun intended,
04:34of the superhero actually studying his own execution of the rescue.
04:37He's that damn fast.
04:38Had the flash actually used this time to, you know, pull off said rescue though,
04:42perhaps Cyborg wouldn't have had to step in late in the day
04:44to blast away the remaining rubble that threatened to squish a poor civilian.
04:47But then fans wouldn't have had this barely noticeable gag to chew on now, would they?
04:52Yeah, not a waste of time at all.
04:53Number 5, Metro Man Super Speed on Full Display, Megamind.
04:57Sitting as one of the finest twists you'll find being committed to an animated caper,
05:01or any big screen adventure for that matter,
05:03the reveal of Metro Man actually being alive all along
05:06in the latter stages of DreamWorks Megamind
05:08left more than a few jaws a-dropping.
05:10Far from being an out-of-nowhere occurrence though,
05:13eagle-eyed fans managed to land on the exact moment that Brad Pitt-voiced Hero
05:17put his super-speed plan into action.
05:19When taken in the scene which depicts Metro Man and Megamind
05:22on two projections earlier in the flick,
05:24with the former in an abandoned observatory and the latter in his lair,
05:28there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it beat
05:29that shows a flash from Metro Man's screen to Megamind's.
05:32This is supposed to represent the sheer speed
05:34of the eventual rapid moments of reflection
05:36that would pave the way for Music Man to become a thing,
05:39post-faking of the superhero's death via nursing school skeleton prop.
05:43It's honestly quick enough to completely overlook
05:45should you find yourself reaching for a handful of popcorn at the wrong moment.
05:48Number 4. Gaston's Deathly Gaze
05:50Beauty and the Beast
05:51It shouldn't exactly come as breaking news
05:53to hear of the various animators involved
05:55in bringing numerous Disney animated classics to life,
05:58sneaking their fair share of in-jokes and crude humour
06:00into supposed family flicks.
06:02You filthy people!
06:04But in the case of one freakishly fast frame
06:06in the closing stages of Beauty and the Beast,
06:08the decision to add a subtle extra detail
06:10did actually imbue an effective touch of darkness
06:13into the inevitable fate of the fiercely arrogant Gaston.
06:16In the slippery moments following on from a sneaky knife attack
06:19on a beast who opts to refrain from killing the vain villain,
06:22yet a rather sudden second of close-up on Gaston's face
06:25as he falls past the imaginary camera
06:27would reveal a set of grim skulls in his pupils,
06:30suggesting that the doomed hunter was set for an audience
06:33with the Grim Reaper himself.
06:34Sensing this to be too chilling a happening,
06:37despite it being as brief as noted,
06:39Disney would pull the theatrical cut skulls
06:41from eventual VHS and Laserdisc releases.
06:43However, the barely noticeable beat
06:45still managed to wiggle back onto the scene
06:47in subsequent DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD offerings.
06:50You just can't keep a good skull down.
06:52Number 3.
06:52Shifu has a ball training Poe, Kung Fu Panda
06:55Sticking with the family-friendly animated sphere now,
06:58and to a frame so wholesome
06:59you likely won't be able to keep yourself
07:01from grinning upon discovering it.
07:02You'll do a full Mel Gibson.
07:03After discovering how food could indeed motivate
07:06his new pupil to fulfill his training,
07:08the legendary Kung Fu wizard Shifu
07:10puts hapless panda Poe through his paces.
07:12Taking advantage of the endless appetite
07:14of the martial artist in training,
07:16Shifu proceeds to challenge his new apprentice
07:18whenever he attempts to seize a quick bite
07:19from under his trainer's nose.
07:21And in one of the few rare instances
07:23of the Dustin Hoffman voice critter
07:24clearly having the time of his damn life,
07:27making his panda protégé jump through hoops for him,
07:29just as Poe believes he's finally earned the right
07:31to chow down on a dumpling,
07:33Shifu darts across camera
07:34and yanks the snack from his chopsticks.
07:36A close examination of the hilarious happening
07:38reveals the sight of the red panda
07:40looking right down the barrel in sheer delight,
07:42as he once again foils the unassuming
07:44Jack Black-voiced hero.
07:46Even strict Kung Fu kings can have a laugh
07:47from time to time, you know.
07:49Number 2.
07:49Spider-Man Utterly Vaporizes Venom
07:51Spider-Man 3.
07:52Returning to Spider-Verse territory now,
07:54but to the live-action corner
07:56of Sony's web-slinging universe,
07:58and a moment involving the very vicious ending
08:00of one particularly vexing villain.
08:02His name starts with a V, okay?
08:03When it comes to most devilish antagonists
08:05on display in just about any superhero offering,
08:07death is usually an act that can pretty much
08:09always be undone should the story demand it.
08:12However, in the case of Eddie Brock's violent demise
08:14in the closing stages of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3,
08:17one speedy frame suggests that this symbiote host
08:20may struggle more than most to make his way
08:22back to the land of the living.
08:23Upon Spider-Man unleashing a goblin bomb
08:25on Venom post-metal pole bashing,
08:27and no, not in a sexy way,
08:29a desperate Brock can be seen
08:30launching himself at the symbiote,
08:31only to get caught in the subsequent explosion.
08:34It's here when a rapid flash of a skeleton
08:36can be seen tumbling out of the carnage
08:38in one solitary frame,
08:39and that's the chaos of the situation,
08:41not the other symbiote.
08:42And this all but confirms that Brock
08:43is most definitely not getting back up
08:45from this particular blast,
08:47unless Raimi opted to return
08:48to his undead roots, of course.
08:50Number 1.
08:50Tony Seizes Arc Reactive Future, Iron Man
08:53Atting as the foundation
08:54for what would eventually become
08:56a fruitful Marvel cinematic universe,
08:58Tony Stark's forging of a makeshift arc reactor
09:00whilst being held captive by the Ten Rings
09:02was actually alluded to a bit earlier
09:05than you likely remember.
09:06During a sequence that sees the eventual Iron Man
09:08being water-tortured by the aforementioned
09:10terrorist group,
09:11Stark finds himself experiencing
09:13a number of mental flashbacks,
09:15Pepper Potts' voice in particular
09:16being heard in the torturing
09:18upon turning down the group's demands
09:19for him to build a Jericho missile for them.
09:22Alongside said Pepper soundbite, though,
09:23is an interesting single frame
09:25in the form of the Stark Industries Arc Reactor
09:27powering Tony's factory at home.
09:29Clearly pumped into the scene
09:31is a subtle sign of Tony's initial realization
09:33of the reactor being the solution
09:34to his newfound shrapnel issue.
09:37It's a beat many didn't spot
09:38during the first few watches
09:39of the MCU Kickstarter.
09:41Tony and Jensen would proceed
09:42to forge the first flickers of Iron Man
09:44in the scenes that would follow
09:45this blink-and-you'll-miss-it spark of an idea
09:47that would set the stage
09:48for an entire cinematic empire.
09:51Oh, how time flies.
09:52And that's our list.
