Dans un village d'Irlande, un prêtre reçoit en confession un homme qui lui annonce vouloir le tuer dans les huit jours, en représailles d'abus sexuels commis par un autre représentant de l'Eglise. Le père James confie l'affaire à son évêque, qui ne lui est d'aucun secours. Dépité, le prêtre continue de venir en aide à ses paroissiens, parmi lesquels se trouve l'homme qui le menace. Est-ce le chirurgien ? Le garagiste ? Le châtelain ? Il ne parle de sa situation à personne, pas même à la fille qu'il a eue avant d'entrer dans les ordres, et qui vient lui rendre visite pour quelques jours...
