Braddon candidate's for the upcoming federal election battle it out and compare property portfolios.
Transcript
00:00You've made comments that you understand how cost of living is affecting people.
00:04You've made comments about how you make different choices these days at the supermarket and so on because of that.
00:10Do you expect voters would take that seriously if they knew that you owned your own aeroplane in a multi-million dollar property portfolio?
00:17Well, I sold the aeroplane when COVID had come along, so I don't own it anymore.
00:21But yeah, I did own an aeroplane.
00:23Look, I'm absolutely unashamed that I've done pretty well.
00:26Look, I've worked hard. I've been a bit of a workaholic in my career.
00:32I've done the fly-in, fly-out jobs. I've worked 80 hours a week at times, and I've invested wisely.
00:38Make no exception for that.
00:40Certainly not being critical of someone who's been successful. Not at all.
00:45But you've said in recent times things such as I grew up in Lauderdale with mum and dad.
00:51We didn't grow up in a wealthy family. Started off with not much and probably still don't have much.
00:56I'm happy to put my hand up at work for the electorate.
01:01I find myself choosing lesser products and lesser brands.
01:04This is at the supermarket to keep that cost down.
01:07Now, do you think, given the circumstances, I mean, I think an estimated value of the property portfolio would probably top $5 million.
01:15In the circumstances, do you think trying to come across as Joe Average in those circumstances really passes the pub test?
01:23Well, I should point out that the banks still own a bit of that portfolio.
01:26Right.
01:28They've got a vested interest in those houses as well.
01:32Okay.
01:32What was the rest of the question, sorry?
01:34Well, do you think trying to come across as Joe Average in those financial circumstances passes the pub test?
01:42I've been out talking to people and I think I understand.
01:45I've come from nothing.
01:46My parents left school.
01:48My parents gave me nothing.
01:49Every dollar I've got, I've earned.
01:50I know what it's like to start at the bottom of the ladder and work your way up.
01:54I appreciate the opportunities that I've had and I appreciate the success that I've had.
01:58I would love the opportunity to help other people get on that same ladder and find those same opportunities.
02:04That's one of the motivators that I'm here for.
02:06Okay.
02:07Tell us about your housing portfolio.
02:09How are you going to do, please?
02:10I have a cottage at Gawler, one house, which I've lived in for 45 years with Graham, my husband.
02:18We raised our two kids in that little cottage and that's it.
02:22So you don't own other properties?
02:23I don't own any other property.
02:25I see.
02:26What were we talking about?
02:27Sorry, I should say I have a small block of land out at Robson Creek Road, which I share with my sister.
02:32Okay.
02:32But it's got nothing on it apart from a few little trees and wattle trees that are of no value.
