Spain's Pedro Sánchez aims for closer trade ties with China amid US tariffs uncertainty

00:00Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is in China as he conducts a two-country tour of Asia.
00:06The visit is aimed at boosting Spanish-Chinese trade relations amid growing global instability.
00:12The visit comes against the backdrop of serious geopolitical tensions due to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff war.
00:18On Wednesday, as Sánchez toured Vietnam, Trump announced a 90-day pause of his global reciprocal tariffs,
00:25a move hailed by the Spanish premier.
00:27His U-turn, however, did not include China, which was instead targeted with even steeper tariffs,
00:33prompting a response from Beijing.
00:35Ahead of his visit, the White House warned the Spanish government against cozying up to China.
00:41In an interview to U.S. media, Treasury Secretary Scott Besson said looking to Beijing would be a losing bet for the Europeans,
00:48likening it to cutting their own throat.
00:50Sánchez is the first European leader to make an official visit to Beijing
00:54since the escalation of tariff tensions between the U.S. and the rest of the world.
00:59China is Spain's fourth-largest trading partner and its second-largest supplier of goods.
01:04Beijing is, however, the twelfth-largest export destination of Spanish products,
01:09a figure Sánchez hopes to improve.
01:11During his two-day trip, Sánchez will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping,
