Transcript
00:00The White Lotus Season 3 finale has wrapped up a lot of storylines,
00:03but just because the credits rolled, it doesn't mean the drama is really over.
00:08Rick and Chelsea are dead, Sreeta Laza widow, the bodyguards got bodied,
00:12the Ratliffs are broke, Belinda's rich, the frenemies are besties again,
00:15Frank found enlightenment, Chloe and Gary are still creepy,
00:19the thieves are still partying, Dytaq got the girl, and Fabian.
00:22Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:30Here's a recap of every major character's arc, the deeper symbolism of their journey,
00:35where they fit into the overarching themes,
00:37and the likely reality they'll be facing in the very near future.
00:41I don't even have my lorazepam. I'm going to have to drink myself to sleep.
00:45In a shocking turn of events, Belinda actually cashes in on the hush money offer,
00:56smiling all the way to the bank, and fans are divided on her sudden change of heart.
01:01Back in Season 1, Belinda fantasized about opening her own wellness center,
01:05even drafting a business plan for potential investor Tanya.
01:09When that Kickstarter fell through, viewers were devastated for the single mom,
01:13so Belinda's return in Season 3 was a welcome addition,
01:16especially given her interest in broadening her spiritual repertoire.
01:20But after receiving Pornchai's knowledge of healing, and then some,
01:23she finds herself in a precarious situation.
01:26Greg, whose dirty secrets she's privy to, is on to her.
01:30So she's offered some cash to stay out of his business.
01:32Belinda knows taking the money is the wrong thing to do.
01:36In fact, she's been sounding alarm bells all season.
01:38I think we should call the police, don't you?
01:40Though Greg is intimidating, she does have several options here.
01:45Best case scenario, she tips off police, gets out of Thailand,
01:48and enters witness protection until Greg is arrested.
01:52Belinda has always exhibited nurturing and compassionate qualities,
01:55but when her son Zion arrives, she becomes rather cold.
01:59He's buying me off, so I don't tell anyone where he is.
02:02Okay, she'll let him buy you off then.
02:04It's not right.
02:05Zion?
02:06He had her killed.
02:07When Zion learns about the tricky position she's in,
02:10he steers her toward the payoff,
02:12even suggesting she negotiate a higher sum.
02:15I'm not taking that blood money, okay?
02:17Mom, why don't you just see how much you can get?
02:20Z.
02:20It's as if her concerns for their safety are not important.
02:23No, no, he won't do anything to you.
02:26He's done it before.
02:27What matters most to Zion is receiving that payment
02:30and flexing the degree he's working toward.
02:32All I care about is business and the bottom line.
02:35NBA, baby.
02:35Once Zion pitches a whopping $5 million,
02:39all morals are out the window.
02:42Effectively, Tanya's murder has been turned into a bargaining chip.
02:45You go back in there and you tell him your mother takes things very personal.
02:51She doesn't trust him, okay?
02:52And if we don't make a deal and we don't get the money,
02:55who knows what I'll do?
02:57In the end, Greg pays up.
02:59I called the bank.
03:00It's real.
03:01Are you kidding?
03:02Much like Tanya stiffed Belinda back in Hawaii,
03:05Belinda pulls out of the business she and Porn Chai were brainstorming.
03:09While plans weren't super concrete,
03:11it meant something and exemplified her life's work.
03:14Despite knowing that sinking feeling all too well,
03:17she kind of shafts Porn Chai when the shoe's on the other foot.
03:21Circumstances have changed for me,
03:23and I just can't commit to anything right now.
03:25While it might be smart for her to get out of Thailand,
03:29it's unlikely this chapter is truly closed for her.
03:32Can't I just be rich for five minutes?
03:35Some fans are delighted that Belinda can sail off into the sunset $5 million richer,
03:40but she should have probably trusted her gut before selling out.
03:43By accepting the hush money,
03:45she's now implicated in an active investigation
03:47and has made herself an accessory to murder.
03:50Furthermore, under the Bank Secrecy Act,
03:53she'll be probed by her institution for receiving that exceptionally large cash flow,
03:58so it's unlikely she'll be able to write that off.
04:01Legalities aside, Belinda's switch-up stings on a deeper level.
04:05In a callback to this line earlier in the season,
04:07I'm starting to feel like something good's going to come out of this.
04:09Zion reminds her that taking the money is her moment.
04:12Maybe this is the one good thing that's meant to come out of all of it.
04:15While she was initially referring to the pursuit of her true calling
04:18to learn and grow as a healer,
04:20Zion flips that sentiment.
04:22Pacifying a killer and accepting money for silence is not a flex,
04:26but Zion is kind of right.
04:28She's ultimately allowed the bribe to usurp her personal goals.
04:32What about your man?
04:33You two were going to start a business together?
04:36Don't you want to start your own spa?
04:38So what's the true cost for Belinda,
04:40apart from potential jail time?
04:42Well, one of the major themes of the season
04:43centers around systems of belief as religion.
04:46How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice in pursuit of temptation?
04:50Belinda abandons her dreams,
04:52her connection to the spiritual world,
04:54and her integrity for the almighty dollar.
04:57We did that shit.
04:58We did that shit.
04:59Yeah, we did.
05:01And you worked so hard, mom.
05:03I love you.
05:05I love you too.
05:07I'm not going to find your center or some shit.
05:08In the shuffle, Tanya's tragic death remains unsolved,
05:14and Greg is still a free man.
05:16Who knows who else he might kill?
05:18Well, Gary might kill me.
05:20I honestly think he's capable of it.
05:22Guy Talk and Mook.
05:24Like Belinda, Guy Talk's faith in himself is put to the test.
05:28He's been pining for Mook,
05:29but she's playing hard to get.
05:31Though she acts marginally interested,
05:33she makes it clear she has a thing for the bodyguards.
05:34Mook spends the majority of her screen time
05:48negging Guy Talk to dream bigger than his role as a gate attendant.
05:59It's almost as if she's more interested in his promotion than he is.
06:04Admittedly, Mook doesn't have a whole lot to do this season.
06:20Rather, she serves as a sounding board for Guy Talk
06:22to influence his growth.
06:24While she undoubtedly wants him to become a bodyguard
06:27for the heftier salary,
06:28she also seems eerily eager to see him engaged in violence.
06:32She's the most into him immediately after he faces off
06:35with the jewelry thieves.
06:38And she's visibly excited to learn
06:40he's been entrusted with a weapon.
06:42She even accompanies him to the fights
06:56to showcase the warrior qualities he should embody.
06:59When Pilak takes Guy Talk to the shooting range,
07:12he's clearly uneasy.
07:14Despite being a sharpshooter,
07:16he's hesitant about his ability
07:17to truly fire the weapon when needed.
07:19This is because having a killer instinct
07:36goes against his identity and religion.
07:38Although the head of security has lost faith in Guy Talk,
07:48Mook is determined to push him
07:49in the direction that suits her.
07:59On their date,
08:00she's disappointed to learn
08:01he won't be taking on a role as a bodyguard.
08:03In fact, it begins to feel as if she was only giving him
08:06the time of day under the condition
08:07that he make progress towards this brazen position.
08:11Although Guy Talk would rather keep
08:12the more comfortable job and his theology intact,
08:15he realizes that he'll have to compromise
08:17if he wants to get the girl.
08:18In a highly manipulative manner,
08:31Mook makes it her mission to cloud his judgment.
08:34And it's working.
08:35He's been fantasizing about a life with Mook
08:48for a while now.
08:49So when an opportunity to impress Mook,
08:51help Sritala,
08:52and save the day presents itself,
08:54he's put in a conundrum.
08:56The pacing of the action
08:57in the final face-off
08:58is very intentional.
08:59Guy Talk arrives on the scene
09:01after the dust has settled.
09:02He doesn't have all the information,
09:04only orders from Sritala to murder Rick.
09:07I'm in, I'm in, I'm in.
09:11It's important to note that Rick is unarmed
09:13and walking away from him.
09:15So even Mook's earlier pardoning of violence
09:17as a means of defense doesn't apply here.
09:20Guy Talk hesitates.
09:22In a split second,
09:22he must choose between
09:23what his heart truly wants
09:25to cause no harm,
09:26and what his heart selfishly desires
09:28to impress those around him.
09:31And so, he shoots Rick,
09:32in cold blood,
09:34execution style.
09:37The manner in which Guy Talk dispatches Rick
09:40indicates that he's made his decision.
09:42In a flash forward,
09:43he earns the admiration of Mook
09:45and the bodyguard title.
09:46But we can't help but think back
09:48to the monastery leader's wise words.
09:50Lost connection with the spirit.
09:54What is left?
09:57Chasing money, pleasure, yeah?
10:01This perfectly describes Guy Talk's tragic arc.
10:04He has lost connection with his spirit
10:06while chasing money and pleasure,
10:08so it's hard to imagine
10:09he'll truly be happy in the long run.
10:12The Ratlifts.
10:13The monastery leader also had a lot of choice words
10:16for Timothy this season,
10:17and they resonated with him on a deep level.
10:20You cannot outrun Penn.
10:23Timothy has been contemplating ending his own life
10:26and possibly taking his family with him,
10:28due to the revelation
10:29that his crooked business was sniffed out.
10:31What do you think happens
10:33when we die?
10:36It's the wise leader's words
10:37that give him pause,
10:38coupled with the near-death experience
10:40that almost claimed his son Lachlan.
10:42He realizes he has to face the consequences
10:44of his actions head-on,
10:45even if it means serving time in prison
10:48and losing his estate.
10:49During the final moments on the boat,
10:51we're treated to a visual of splashing water.
10:54It's a shot that's appeared in every season,
10:56highlighting the turbulent nature of the world.
10:59Victoria even symbolically dreams
11:00of a tsunami destroying her home.
11:03But in this instance,
11:04the droplets of water are a callback to the line.
11:06When you're born,
11:08you are like a single drop of water,
11:12flying upward,
11:14separated from the one giant consciousness.
11:18The monk explains to Rick
11:19that while we're alive,
11:21we grow and change independently,
11:22but then drop back down into the water,
11:25becoming one with the ocean again.
11:27Death is a happy return,
11:30like coming home.
11:33And Timothy knows that it's neither his
11:35nor his family's time to die,
11:37because that would be an egregiously selfish decision.
11:40Our solutions are temporary.
11:45They are quick fix.
11:49They create more anxiety,
11:53more suffering.
11:55So once he realizes that he must heed
11:57the wise man's advice,
11:58he finds a sense of peace
11:59that had been fleeting all season.
12:01It is easier to be patient
12:04once we finally accept.
12:09There is no resolution.
12:12At last, Timothy understands
12:14that even if they lose everything,
12:16they can find a way to persevere
12:18through the uncertainty.
12:19Things are about to change.
12:23We'll get through it as a family.
12:26Victoria's arc is full of zonked-out highs and lows,
12:39but follows a fairly downward trajectory.
12:42She revels in her privileged lifestyle
12:44and is ultimately punished for that entitlement.
12:46I just don't think
12:48at this age,
12:51I'm meant to live an uncomfortable life.
12:55Piper, on the other hand,
12:56attempted to step out of her comfort zone
12:58by coming to Thailand.
12:59She wanted so badly
13:01to distinguish herself from her greedy family
13:03and to reconnect with a higher purpose.
13:05But after experiencing
13:06what poverty felt like at the temple,
13:09that had no organic dining options,
13:11she realizes her mother's way of living
13:13suits her far better.
13:14There's so much suffering in the world
13:16and we have it so easy
13:18and like other people have it so hard
13:21and I just,
13:21I feel like it's really unfair.
13:24Saxon, on the other hand,
13:25has effectively switched places with his sister.
13:27He started off arrogant,
13:29creepy and brimming with superficial values.
13:31Hooking up with you would be an empty experience.
13:34And how would you know that?
13:37Because I know.
13:39Because you're soulless.
13:40But after meeting Chelsea,
13:42he opens his eyes
13:43to a new way of connecting with the world
13:44and others around him.
13:46No, try me.
13:48No, teach me your ways.
13:50Lachlan is tugged between his brother and sister
13:52all season long.
13:54As the baby of the family,
13:55he's still searching for a sense of self.
13:58There are hints that he's questioning his sexuality
14:00and has a warped sense of being a pleaser.
14:03Lachlan, it's okay for you to like worship me,
14:05but don't like worship me.
14:09Though he came close to making a breakthrough with the monks,
14:12he's ultimately pulled away from Thailand.
14:15But at least, thanks to their teachings,
14:17he'll be able to make do with the less posh lifestyle
14:19they're going home to.
14:20I think you could live with no money,
14:24no house, nothing.
14:27Yeah, yeah, I think I could.

14:54The Frenemies
14:55Just as the Ratlifts must learn to lean on one another,
14:58girlfriends Jacqueline, Lori, and Kate
15:00experience a similar breakthrough.
15:02Their friendship seemed doomed from episode one,
15:05when Lori bawled her eyes out
15:07after witnessing the superficial platitudes
15:09of her friends who appear more well-adjusted.
15:11The women navigate uncomfortable conversations
15:14about politics,
15:15Are you a Republican?
15:17petty drama over a man,
15:18Why did you keep pushing him on me?
15:20When it was always your plan
15:21to hook up with him yourself.
15:23and unresolved past resentment.
15:24She has not changed at all.
15:27It's well established that Lori is not like her friends.
15:30Look, I'm not like you.
15:31Sometimes I just have to be honest.
15:33She doesn't engage in the performative chit-chat
15:35about how amazing her life is
15:37and how happy she is for her besties.
15:39We're all lucky.
15:40We're so lucky.
15:44Yeah.
15:45She even abandons the front altogether
15:47after learning that Jacqueline slept with Valentin,
15:49throwing both ladies under the bus
15:51to expose all the gossip
15:52and catty phoniness they espouse.
15:54I don't know.
15:55When Kate told me she saw him
15:56coming out of your room this morning,
15:58you did.
15:59Anyone would go crazy
16:00if they had to spend a vacation
16:01with Jacqueline and Kate.
16:03But Lori's spiraling is made into her problem.
16:06If you're not happy with your life, Lori,
16:07I don't know.
16:08F***ing change it.
16:09Jacqueline and Kate haven't come
16:10to any real internal resolution
16:12by the midpoint of the finale.
16:14Jacqueline is still an aging actress
16:15seeking validation
16:16and burning friends in the process.
16:18And Kate is still a questionable friend
16:20with the gift of gab,
16:21serving as both a superpower and kryptonite.
16:23But Lori has a surprising monologue
16:26at their last supper.
16:27Just when it seems the friends
16:28might finally split apart for good,
16:30she has an epiphany.
16:32As you get older,
16:33you have to justify your life, you know,
16:35and your choices.
16:37Despite all the BS she has to weed through,
16:39her friends force her to reflect
16:41on her own mistakes.
16:42And in this moment,
16:43Lori touches on the overarching theme
16:45of belief systems
16:46in a movingly articulate way.
16:48I mean, work was my religion for forever,
16:51but I definitely lost my belief there.
16:53And then, and then I tried love,
16:56and, and that was just a painful religion
16:58that just made everything worse.
17:00While other characters either turn toward religion
17:02to save them,
17:03or away from it in pursuit of worldly pleasures,
17:06Lori throws the whole rulebook out the window.
17:08I had this epiphany today.
17:10I don't need religion or God
17:14to give my life meaning.
17:16Because time gives it meaning.
17:19It's her friends that make her truly happy.
17:21Despite the ups and downs,
17:23they've always been there.
17:24And faith and friendship
17:25is a fundamental value no one can deny.
17:28So with a new sense of respect for one another,
17:31the frenemies can officially retire the moniker
17:33and just be good friends.
17:36So were you satisfied with how everything played out?
17:38Which storylines hit you the hardest?
17:40And if Fabian went on tour,
17:42would you buy a ticket?
17:43Let us know in the comments.
17:45Good evening.
17:48This is the song I wrote
17:52when I was feeling a bit homesick.
