Celebrate 30 years of A Goofy Movie with Disney Legend Bill Farmer (voice of Goofy) and Jason Marsden (voice of Max).

A Goofy Movie is a Disney cult classic that has garnered immense amounts of nostalgic love, especially among millennials who grew up with its heartfelt father-son story and unforgettable Powerline soundtrack. While originally an underrated Disney gem, fan-driven buzz has recently rekindled its mainstream appeal with I2I by Magnolia Park being the best performing single on Disney’s pop punk album “A Whole New Sound” last year.

00:00It's from the movie.
00:08Right out of the movie, ready to go camping and everything.
00:11You think they'd let us drive this thing?
00:13I think they want us to drive this thing.
00:15Let's check it out.
00:16Come on.
00:17Wow.
00:18Oh, wow.
00:19Like a kid.
00:20So you notice me.
00:27You have been the voice of Goofy for 38 years?
00:3038 years.
00:31In 1986.
00:32My agent said, do you do any of the Disney characters?
00:35At the time, there were four or five Mickeys, Donalds, Goofys, and they wanted to settle
00:39on one person.
00:40Sure, I like Goofy, he's my favorite character.
00:43And then about a month later, they said they'd like to try me.
00:46They don't sign you to a big contract or anything.
00:48It's for one show.
00:49Yeah.
00:50And now after about three or 4,000 shows, I think I got the job.
00:53Of all the people, Bill Farmer's the goofiest.
00:57Of course.
01:01So Goofy Movie was supposed to be a Goof Troop movie.
01:04Yes.
01:05I was 18 at the time.
01:06I still sounded kind of like a youthful thing.
01:08You still sound like that.
01:09I guess I do sound young.
01:11That's my thing.
01:12But for Max, because he's 14 and he's probably going through puberty a little bit, gave him
01:16a little, sort of like a little voice crack here and there.
01:20And noticing that Max is also going through the struggles of getting older and changes,
01:25I thought it would be fun if he laughed like Goofy, laughed like his dad.
01:28And first day of recording, I'm watching you do it, and you would like convulse.
01:31Your whole body would get into it.
01:32Yeah, you got to get into the physicality of the action.
01:36Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, gosh.
01:40If you were to teach someone to do the Goofy laugh, how do you do that?
01:43I listened to the way Pinto Colvig did it in the old days, and I broke it down into
01:47three parts.
01:48There's the, oh, oh, like a cough, oh, oh, and then the, oh, oh, and it's like, oh, oh,
01:55oh, oh, oh, you know, it's kind of a suck in on that third one, oh, oh, oh, you got
02:02it.
02:03You got it.
02:04And they, in the opening scenes, they melded ours together.
02:08It wasn't in the script, but I was like, if Max is going to laugh, he might throw a little
02:11yuck and be embarrassed about that because he sounded like his dad.
02:15So when I started doing that, I think they added that to the beginning dream sequence.
02:18Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
02:22oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
02:23That's how you do it.
02:24That's why we get the big bucks, everybody.
02:26Yes.
02:27Getting some vacation with me and my best Buddy.
02:32Yeah, Donald Duck.
02:33No silly, with you!
02:35Goofy's so earnest and so lovely.
02:37He's genuine.
02:39And I think that's what a lot of people relate to.
02:41And he's a good father.
02:42You know, everyone thinks their dad's goofy at least once.
02:45I certainly did.
02:47You look just like I did at your age.
02:51Please don't say that, Dad.
02:52I think most people, when they're young,
02:54they identify with Max, and then later on,
02:57when they have kids, they identify with Goofy.
02:59Yeah.
02:59My son's 15, and I absolutely identify with Goofy.
03:03You know, like, I'm always being silly
03:05and trying to make him laugh.
03:06He's not impressed with me at all.
03:08As he's getting older, those moments
03:10that you get to share with your kid is super precious,
03:13and I can see why Goofy would want to take Max
03:16on this father-son trip.
03:17I, Goofy, hereby dub my son Maximilian
03:22official navigator and head witch wearer
03:25of this here road trip.
03:27Can I tell you my favorite scene in the movie?
03:29Yeah.
03:29It sounds weird, but it's the scene
03:31with Goofy and Pete in the hot tub.
03:33Maybe Max isn't all the things
03:34that you think a son should be, but he loves me.
03:38Hey, my son respects me.
03:42Yeah.
03:42I didn't like that scene at first
03:44because I thought, oh, I'm not doing Goofy enough,
03:47but it worked in that scene.
03:48It worked so good because it's-
03:49It worked really good.
03:50Now I love that scene.
03:52Because it's a conversation between two dads.
03:54You and Jim Cummings just knocked out of the park.
03:56If you keep them under your thumb,
03:58they'll never end up in the gutter.
04:02Under your thumb, Goof.
04:04Hey, there, pal.
04:05Oh.
04:06Grandpa, Grandpa, they go together on the open road.
04:13Come on, Maxie.
04:15In a Goofy movie, what are your favorite songs?
04:17Oh, man, my favorite is the Lester's Possum Park song.
04:20That was great.
04:21That's one of my favorite parts of the movie,
04:23and eye to eye, I think-
04:24Eye to eye is great.
04:25The most fans has become like so iconic now.
04:28Oh, people want a real Powerline concert.
04:30Real Powerline concert, Powerline concert.
04:32Concert, concert, concert, concert.
04:35Beat it.
04:38Beat, beat, bam.
04:39Bam, bam, bam.
04:40Bam, bam, bam.
04:41Yeah, yeah.
04:47Boom, boom, boom.
04:48Boom, boom, boom.
04:49Got myself a notion
04:53One I know that you'll understand
04:56Set the world in motion
05:00By reaching out for each other's hands
05:03Maybe we'll discover
05:05What we should have known all along
05:11It's a road trip
05:13Together's where we both belong
05:15Here it comes
05:16If we listen to each other's heart
05:20We'll find we're never too far apart
05:23And maybe love is the reason why
05:27For the first time ever
05:29Seen it eye to eye
05:33Seen it eye to eye
05:35Oh, I'd better not do it
05:43Thirty years, Billy
05:44Yeah, thirty years, I can't believe it
05:46As an actor, I'm so fortunate to be a working actor
05:49That's so rare
05:50That's nice
05:51And every job, you don't know how it's gonna affect people
05:54Where it's gonna go
05:55And to work on something like this
05:57That has meant so much to people
06:00In ways I never expected
06:02I never take that for granted
06:03I'm very proud to be a goof
06:05I am so proud that people come up to me all the time
06:10And say, a goofy movie changed my life
06:13I couldn't talk to my dad
06:15Until that movie came out
06:17It became our movie
06:18It's wonderful
06:19Yeah, that's what it meant to me
06:21And means to me today
06:23Even more so today than when it came out in 1995
06:26It's one of those rare films that has caught on
06:29And just continually grow
06:32And I love that I get to see you all the time
06:34That's great
06:35You never get to see everyone you work with
06:37But you and I are
06:38They're constantly throwing us back together
06:40And thank goodness we like each other
06:41Yeah, it's about relationships
06:43You're my secondary son
06:44You're my secondary dad
06:48Billy, you know what would make the perfect ending to this trip?
06:50What?
06:51I gotta hear that goofy yell
06:52The goofy yell?
06:53Yeah, okay
06:54Full force
07:00Never gets old
07:08Billy, I think we're going over a waterfall
07:10We're going over a waterfall?
07:11Oh, a waterfall
07:13Waterfall!
