00:00Hi, I'm Eleni. I'm a lifeguard in Newquay. The lifeguards are getting ready for the start of the new season.
00:08So starting from Saturday, for the Easter holidays, the beaches will be full-time lifeguarded.
00:14There are 26 beaches across the South West, including beaches in Cornwall and Newquay areas such as
00:20Thistral, Watergate, Cramtock, Horth, Morgan Horth and other ones spread out across Cornwall and the South West.
00:30It's really important that you have a look at the weather conditions and surf conditions before heading out to the beach
00:36just so you know of any hazards or dangers.
00:39And it's really important to listen to the lifeguards and swim at a lifeguarded beach
00:43so that they can help you if you need it and for you to swim between the red and yellow flags
00:49to make sure that the area you're swimming in is safe.
00:52If you'll find me, we've been busy preparing for the season.
00:55So we've been doing week-long training, including our casualty care course, familiarising ourselves with our rescue equipment
01:03and passing our fitness tests.
01:05So last year in the South West, the lifeguards saved 43 lives and the lifeboats saved 39 lives.
01:14So it's really important that every year we familiarise ourselves with the equipment and our training
01:19so that we can continue to help saving lives on the beach.
