A look around Shireland CBSO Academy in West Bromwich.
Transcript
00:00My name is David Green, I'm Principal here at Shireland CVSO Academy and I've been Principal
00:04since we opened in September 2023. This is a really exciting school to be a part of because
00:09we're the first school in the country to be established in partnership with a professional
00:13orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and so in terms of our aims for
00:17the first year and beyond, it's really to ensure that while our students get a fantastic,
00:22really broad curriculum, we follow the full national curriculum, we are providing a level
00:27opportunity around music that just wouldn't exist for the students. Our children have had
00:32world-famous musicians in front of them, they have the orchestra supporting them on a regular basis,
00:37they all get an instrumental vocal lesson each week and it's a really special place,
00:40both for their wider education but also specifically around music. So we're in our
00:44early days but I think what we find is that it really supports the students pastorally,
00:48they have an interest that helps them and it also helps them to build key skills, resilience,
00:54teamwork, empathy, self-discipline and music's a great vehicle for that. In terms of just,
01:01as I said, we're in our early days but if you look at the impact we're having, our attendance
01:06is well above national averages, our persistent absence is well below national averages,
01:10so for me there are early indications there that what we're doing here is really having a positive
01:15impact on our students. I think this is a really special place and it's helping us to ensure
01:20that students are able to do really well. We really strive for academic and musical excellence
01:27but really underpinned by strong pastoral support and I think our pastoral structures are strong
01:33and students understand our ethos and our key values which mirror those of our trust,
01:39Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust, and I think putting those things together it means that
01:43students really have a great opportunity here to do well. There are several events over the last
01:48few years that we're really really proud of, for example we had our official opening with the Duke
01:52of Edinburgh which was really special to have him here but also within that we had the official
01:58ceremony whereby four of our students played alongside four musicians from the City of Birmingham
02:03Symphony Orchestra which really distilled into one moment what we're trying to achieve here to give
02:07those really those opportunities for excellence to our students. We're providing opportunity for all
02:12students, a key thing for me is that every child here is in the area is welcome here if they have a
02:18passion or talent for music and provide that level of opportunity is so important so I'm particularly
02:23proud of the fact we do give every child a musical an instrumental vocal lesson each week. I'm really
02:29proud of the fact that all our students have opportunity to perform in a music ensemble and
02:33our Christmas and summer concerts are huge events where we can really be proud of and reflect on the
02:38great work the students have done. Students are really excited to be here, they recognise that
02:45they have a great opportunity, they have they experienced the full national curriculum, they
02:49have a thematic curriculum called Literacy for Life in year seven and eight which really supports
02:54them to make connections between subjects and that's true of all schools across our trust
02:58but I think they really value the music and the pastoral support that underpins
03:03what's going on here because I as I've referred to previously I think that one of the things we
03:09do really well here is develop students skill set, the ability to be resilient, work in a team, be
03:15self-disciplined and that then translates into students academic performance which we're really
03:20confident will support students when they get to their exams. Shireland CBSO Academy is a really
03:27exciting school to attend, we deliver the full national curriculum but students got this really
03:32special opportunity around music, it's for anyone who has a passion or talent for music regardless
03:37of your prior experience and we do still have a small number of places available in year seven
03:41or year 12 for September 2025 and anybody who is interested in finding out more should just
03:47contact us via our website.
