Migrant deaths hit new record high in 2024, United Nations agency says

00:00Migrant deaths hit new record high in 2024.
00:08Over 8,900 people died on migration routes worldwide in 2024,
00:14making it the deadliest year on record.
00:17The 2024 toll continues a five-year trend of more and more deaths each year,
00:23and last year's tally tops the previous record set in 2023.
00:27In 2024, July was the month with the most deaths and missing people.
00:32Asia was the region with most deaths, followed by Africa and Europe.
00:36Across the world, deaths due to drowning, vehicle accidents, lack of adequate shelter,
00:42food, water and violence remain the principal causes for people on the move.
00:47Since 2022, at least 10% of all migrants' deaths recorded occurred because of violence.
00:53In 2024, this was due in large part to violence against those in transit in Asia,
00:59with nearly 600 lives lost on migration routes across South and Southeastern Asia.
01:05The actual number of migrants' deaths and disappearances is likely much higher,
01:10as many have to go undocumented due to the lack of official sources.
01:14Since 2014, the remains of more than 30,000 people who lost their lives during migration
01:20have not been recovered.
01:22The deadliest route is the Central Mediterranean Route,
01:25where more than 24,000 people have died in the last decade.
