00:00The Fire and Rescue Department said the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights was successfully
00:07extinguished completely at 3.45pm on Tuesday.
00:11The flames, which were 20 storeys high at one point, had gotten smaller by 2.45pm, after
00:16the firefighters battled the massive fire caused by a gas pipeline leak since early
00:21morning.
00:22The department deployed some 78 personnel for the operation that lasted for about seven
00:26hours.
00:27The department's former director-general, Datuk Sri Mohamad Hamdan Wahid, said the fire
00:32was believed to have been caused by a boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion.
00:37Mohamad Hamdan said the incident could have been due to leaked flammable gas, causing
00:42gas vapour to linger in the air before ignition triggered the explosion.
00:46He said the leak could be from a pipeline or container which might have ruptured, leaked
00:50or had an open valve.
00:52He added that all gas pipeline installations in Malaysia must comply with international
00:57safety standards and local regulations.
00:59So far, 190 houses, 148 cars and 11 motorcycles have been damaged by the fire that broke out
01:07at Jalan Putra Harmony in Putra Heights at 8.10am.
