Rob and Chris, who run the ‘The Straight To Video - 80s Video Shop' in Derbyshire, wanted to recreate the feeling of going to the video shop on Fridays and Saturdays to pick out a film.
Transcript
00:00I'm Rob Lane and with my good friend Chris Anable we both run Straight Video, the 80s
00:15video shop in Ulfreton.
00:20Growing up in the 80s, both me and Chris, we wanted to recreate that whole vibe and
00:25feeling you got when you went to the video shop on like Friday nights and Saturday nights
00:30to pick out a film.
00:31You never knew what you was going to get, just scouring the shelves, who knew what you
00:35was going to come back with.
00:36So we wanted to recreate that feeling for people, which I think is what we've managed
00:40to do.
00:41And well not only is it a trip back in time for people to the childhoods or the teenage
00:45years so they can browse the shelves, pick out films, take photos with the films and
00:51we've also got an 80s bedroom which recreates the old school 80s bedroom with the bed covers
00:58and old posters and things like that.
01:00We've also got a cinema room which people can hire out for birthday parties to show
01:04film which they've perhaps never seen on the big screen, hang out and have some fun.
01:09And yeah just a whole step back in time really.
01:11The videos on the shelves are just to bring back memories for people but we have a whole
01:16merchandise section.
01:18We have a selection of tapes that are for sale, loads of t-shirts and loads of cool
01:21stuff which you perhaps wouldn't get anywhere else.
01:24Everybody has the same story, they remember times of going to the video shop with their
01:28mum or dad on a Friday night and I never get tired of hearing those stories, it's a lot
01:32of fun.
01:33So yeah as long as people get that feeling it's mission accomplished as far as I'm concerned.
01:38We like to try and do cool stuff for the area as well, not just for fans of nostalgia but
01:43for the Alforton area.
01:44So we're bringing in special guests, people from Star Wars, we've had Mike Quinn who played
01:50Nynum in Return of the Jedi and loads of Jim Henson things.
01:53And in the coming months we've got Cobra, an OG gladiator from the 1990s series, he's
01:58coming to visitors.
01:59And we've got Hollywood actor Charlie Slater coming in May, Charlie was in The Delinquents
02:04with Kylie Minogue and he was the voice of E.T. in the recent Holiday Reunion commercial
02:09so he's done some really cool stuff.
02:11So yeah, just trying to bring different things to the area and just have a lot of fun.
02:15We're on all social media, just simply search at E.T.'s Video Shop or E.T.'svideoshop.co.uk
02:20and we're pretty easy to track down, there's not many of us out there.
