00:00Phule was a story that was waiting to be told and told in a very big way to a global audience.
00:12And it was so timely now that all the issues that were raised during the 1840s and 1560s
00:21have become more relevant today and needs to be tackled on a very early basis.
00:25So I thought that this was the film that is the need of the hour.
00:31Regarding my actors, I think it was a no-brainer casting Prateek and Prashanthika.
00:39Because sometimes you wonder who to cast, who to cast, how to start auditioning actors.
00:48But here they were like lifelike portraits who came out of a sketch.
00:55And besides brilliant actors, it was very easy for me.
00:59But getting them to do it, it was their work, their thinking.
01:04And I think thinking actors are very important to portray characters like this.
01:08The internal conflict, it's not external conflict, it's an internal conflict.
01:13It's a big challenge to portray that.
01:16And I think that they have approached very successfully.
01:21So that's how the entire process happened.
01:25Our approach was very simple, we wanted to tell a human story.
01:39Because their work is so huge, humongous, that if we just go there with all our sensibility
01:49and honesty, we will be able to tell the story in the best possible way.
01:56The story was written beautifully, it was a very well written script.
02:01And when I came to know that Alam Sir is directing this, so whatever that is filmography that
02:07you see, you will realize that his approach is very natural, neutral and realistic.
02:14So when you have a director like that, you know how it is going to shape up.
02:21So that's it.
02:22And we just did a couple of look tests, we did a couple of readings and then we were there.
02:29That's how it all came out.
02:45I think we spoke in Zoom the first time.
02:49And Alam Sir sent me a script, and it was a very thick script.
02:55So I called Sir and said, Sir, this is a very thick script, how did you make it?
02:59And he said, no, no, this is the first draft, we have put in all the research.
03:03Now we will take it for sharpening.
03:05And then about a year and a half passed, and then Alam Sir took the script again.
03:10And it was so nice, so interesting, it was like a human drama, literally.
03:17So I just couldn't say no to him.
03:20I mean, I thought about it, but I couldn't say no.
03:23I guess she was the first one to do it.
03:25I think she cast, she was cast before you.
03:34See, I'm not a messenger.
03:36I don't give messages.
03:38But when there is an incident or an incident, when the chapter of history opens in front of you,
03:45then you absorb it, you learn from it, you derive something from it.
03:51And here we are not doing sloganeering, here we are not doing quantification.
03:56We are just narrating a story, reporting a story as it happened with all the emotions and all the power behind it.
04:05And it resonates so much that it fits you, it moves you, it educates you, it energizes you,
04:15and hopefully it will inspire you to change the world.
04:18So that is what these two characters will do.
04:21Generally, we don't even need to shout and shout, because everything is hidden in their actions.
04:28And it's like wherever the audience, anybody who watches the film, wherever they feel that this is still relevant,
04:35something like this is still happening, they will also get to know what should be done.
04:58It was simplified to an extent, at least in my mind.
05:03Because honestly, initially I was very anxious.
05:08And when I used to come for reading, we used to talk to each other and I used to say,
05:14Sir, I don't understand anything, I don't understand where to start, what to do.
05:18And Sir used to say very relaxedly, nothing, just let it be, let go.
05:24Let go of what I don't know, but just let go and just do it.
05:28I think I got a lot of confidence from there.
05:32And obviously it was tough because I know who is there for Saru's wife.
05:39So initially you feel a little bit of baggage, but by the time you go for the shoot, you forget all this.
05:46So just calm, calm, calm.
05:48What is the most memorable scene in the film?
05:53I don't know about the most memorable scene, but it was very interesting.
05:57There are so many layers of this character.
06:00The kind of life he has lived, the kind of work he has done, we can't even think about it.
06:07If you talk to a small child without a name, he will feel that he was born from YouTube.
06:12He was not born like that, neither did he have a magical wand, nor did he have the power of magic.
06:21The greatest power he had was his self-confidence and his pride.
06:26Shakti means to be a leader.
06:29That without fear, he stood against the society and the society and a lot more.
06:36When we hear all this, we feel that something good will happen.
06:38But when we started doing this, there is a whole internal transformation that you feel.
06:44Like when you wear a costume on the set, you suddenly feel different.
06:48The only challenge was that when I was saying what he said, it shouldn't be that as an actor, I am left out.
06:56The impact of the work he has done should reach him.
