During House floor debate, Rep. Kevin Mullin (D-CA) spoke in opposition to a resolution that would overturn Department of Energy efficiency standards for walk-in refrigerators and freezers.

00:00The gentleman is recognized.
00:03Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
00:04I rise to strongly oppose H.J. Res. 24.
00:09It's baffling to me that amidst skyrocketing electricity costs, the highest they've been
00:14since the 1990s, we are talking about overturning common-sense energy efficiency standards.
00:23Economists predict these standards would save American taxpayers billions of dollars.
00:28But you don't need to be an economist to know that a better fridge or freezer will
00:32mean lower costs on your utility bill.
00:35For families going to their local grocery, these standards would lower prices and reduce
00:40financial strain.
00:42For small businesses, it means less overhead and more profitability.
00:47These benefits are why the Department of Energy has set energy efficiency standards for decades
00:53across Republican and Democratic administrations, with broad support and little controversy.
01:01America should be leading the world in creating and adopting innovative technologies, especially
01:05ones that reduce costs and help the environment.
01:10Unfortunately, you know, unfortunately, there was just another empty campaign promise by
01:19candidate Trump that electricity costs would be reduced.
01:22So let me just emphasize that Democrats believe in an economy that works for all people.
01:29Under the last administration, we passed legislation that created nearly half a million new jobs
01:34in just two years.
01:36The federal government set standards that will save money.
01:40I just want to conclude by saying that Americans will save a trillion dollars on their energy
01:48bills over the next 30 years under the previous policies.
01:52That's $1 trillion.
01:54So we will continue to fight for common sense policies for everyday people.
01:58And that's why I oppose H.J. Res. 24.
