A woman from Caerau has appeared in Leicester Magistrate’s Court over allegedly stalking Madeleine McCann’s family for a period of 10 months. She appears alongside another woman also accused of stalking, and the pair will return to court in April.

00:00A 60-year-old woman from Cardiff has appeared in court charged with allegedly stalking Madeleine
00:09McCann's family over a period of nearly 10 months. Karen Sprague from Cairo is accused
00:15of conduct that caused serious alarm or distress to the McCann's between May last year and
00:19February this year. She has been charged with one count of stalking and appeared before
00:23Leicester Magistrates' Court on Friday.
00:27Sprague has been released on bail and is due to return to court in Leicester on the
00:3122nd of April. As part of her bail conditions, she has been ordered not to contact the McCann
00:36family and must stay away from Leicester unless attending legal proceedings.
00:41Another woman, 23-year-old Julia Wandel from Poland, is also facing stalking charges in
00:46connection with the case. She is accused of targeting Kate and Gerry McCann as well as
00:50their teenage children, Sean and Emily, over a period of more than a year.
00:55Prosecutors allege that Wandel repeatedly contacted the family between January 2024
01:00and February this year, sending letters, voicemails and messages via WhatsApp and Instagram. She
01:05is also accused of visiting their home twice in May and December last year.
01:12Wandel has been charged with four counts of stalking and is set to appear at Leicester
01:15Crown Court alongside Mrs Sprague.
01:20Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007 while on holiday with her family in Praia da Luz,
01:25Portugal. She was three years old at the time and despite ongoing investigations and
01:29the fact that it has remained one of the most high-profile cases in British history and
01:34at the centre of British public consciousness for almost 20 years, the case remains unsolved.
