Original ET The Extra-Terrestrial model could fetch nearly $1M at auction

An original model of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is the showstopper at Sotheby’s 'There Are Such Things: 20th Century Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy on Screen' auction. The model of the gentle alien from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 hit is estimated to reach nearly $1 million. The model was designed and built by special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi, the visionary 'monster-maker' behind E.T., Dune, Alien, King Kong and other films. It is one of only three E.T.s used during the making of the 1982 classic. Standing at just over 3 feet (91.44 cm) tall, the model starred in the film’s iconic 'closet scene,' in which E.T. disguises himself among stuffed animals.

00:00This ET model was created by Carlo Rimbaldi, who was the person known for bringing to life
00:27the monsters in films throughout the 80s, so ET, Dune, Sandworms of Dune, Puck from
00:36Close Encounters, King Kong, etc.
00:39He really designed both the outside of these characters and the mechanical, the insides,
00:48the animatronics.
00:49So he made them look right, but he also made them move right.
01:16Rimbaldi was brought in to recreate this character and make it lovable, make it someone
01:23that you could feel empathy for.
01:27And in working on the eyes, he wanted to come up with a design that could be universally
01:36captivating to people, and so he was really struggling with, how am I going to do this,
01:40how am I going to do this?
01:41So one day he looked at his daughter's cat, which had these beautiful eyes, beautiful
01:48big blue eyes, and he realized, oh my god, anybody who looks at this cat loves this cat
01:53because of these big eyes.
01:54And so he designed ET's eyes from that cat, and it did the job.
02:11The estimate on this is 600,000 to 900,000.
02:29There has been one other ET model that has sold.
02:33It was an animatronic, where the skin, if you will allow us to call it that, was no
02:40longer present.
02:41That sold for $2.5 million.
02:44So this is the first ET to come to market that looks like ET, where you could look right
02:50at it and recognize it.
03:05This was always stationary.
03:06It was screen used.
03:08This is one of the key ET models in the film.
03:11This featured in the closet scene when Elliot first comes in and sees ET, and ET is kind
03:18of frozen in terror.
03:19And then we've got an incredible little skull that also has a crystal ball in it that was
03:27something that he used.
03:28When you open it up, you see that incredible detail inside the skull.
03:43The theme for this sale is horror, sci-fi, and fantasy on the screen.
03:49So we could be talking about props, posters, original artwork, archives, all relating to
03:56the creation of film in those categories.
04:21There's a whole collection of early universal horror posters.
04:25These are some of the rarest early posters you can find, you know, Dracula, the Wolf Man, et cetera.
04:56And that's it for now.
04:57Thanks for watching.
04:58I'll see you next time.
04:59Bye.
05:00Bye.
