00:00The genre of your film is horror, thriller, suspense.
00:03In Hollywood now, you're more noticeable for the substance.
00:07And their reaction is, finally, there's an acting piece for horror, suspense.
00:14Do you think, locally speaking, it's harder to be noticed as an actress if that is your genre?
00:20I think, ultimately, if that were the goal, it is really very difficult to achieve.
00:25I think for us, or at least I'd like to speak for myself,
00:29in terms of being recognized, it is something that just follows.
00:35At least for me.
00:36The main goal for me is really to affect the audience.
00:39That's what I always think about.
00:42If you think, okay, you're a monster, and you think,
00:48you need to be noticed when you're here, when you act here,
00:51or you need to be recognized when you act here,
00:54it's really hard to be at par with the kind of standard that you're putting up for yourself.
00:59I'd like to think that any particular project, movie like ours,
01:04is always a collaborative effort.
01:06While I want to top the best that I have done prior to this project,
01:11I also don't want to take away the amazing abilities of those I am working with at the moment.
01:18I am part of, so I'm a member of the academy for IMs.
01:23I judge for them.
01:24I judge also for Asian Academy almost yearly,
01:28and also a permanent member of the Asian Academy.
01:31So when you are part of an academy and award-giving bodies that are international,
01:36you get to see the whole different world that they can also offer.
01:41So you can see the difference of what we do here in the Philippines,
01:45and the difference in everything.
01:55So the timing of everything is also different.
01:59And much as I want to compare my timing to theirs,
02:02and even our timing as a film industry in the Philippines to theirs,
02:09we are still far from that.
02:11To be frank, in terms of technicality, it's really hard.
02:15The equipment they use, we are striving always for that.
02:21Which means money.
02:22Yeah, and training.
02:24Because in Hollywood, they only take one film a year, two, maybe the most.
02:31They have time to prepare, lose the weight, gain the weight, transform.
02:36While in the Philippines, we're not as fortunate just yet.
02:40I'd like to believe that we'll also get there.
02:42Because we adapt so fast.
02:44We really need people to trust us.
02:48And if we don't have money from here,
02:51why won't we be open to producers?
03:08So you can see, it's not just caretakers.
03:13I know that the premise is to really bring caretakers outside of the country,
03:21so to your question,
03:24I feel that when it comes to acting in terms of an actress,
03:30you can't compare them to how they do it abroad
03:34because their stories are different.
03:36Substance, when you do it here,
03:38our reception is different, I would assume.
03:41There's a correlation because I haven't watched it yet.
03:44But I'm sure you get what I mean.
03:46It's really different.
03:48Because their culture is different from ours.
03:50And our gauges are different.
03:52I'd like to think that Filipinos,
03:55it's not the same playing field.
03:58It's not higher, it's not lower, it's not equal,
04:02but it's different.
04:03Because our storytelling as people, as actors,
04:07are so different from how they tell their stories.
04:10So once we get a hold of who we truly are,
04:14as artists, as creative, as Filipino,
04:17having that DNA in all of us,
04:19and not be able to compare our work
04:21to the kind of work that they do,
04:23what they achieve, what gets recognized there,
04:25that's when we will all really truly thrive as a film industry.
04:30Because we can embrace fully what we can give.
04:37It's hard because when you watch it,
04:39I get what you mean.
04:41Acting here,
04:43you do it now after so many decades.
04:46But it's really hard.
04:50My question is, in the Philippines,
04:52do you think that when your piece is a suspense or horror,
04:55is it more difficult for you to like,
04:58to consider for acting, whatever?
05:02I truly understand your point,
05:05and I love it and I do agree with everything that Dimkos has said.
05:09But I have a very precise answer to your question.
05:15Because this is partly my main genre.
05:20Horror and suspense, perhaps.
05:25And I have been recognized,
05:28and I say this with all gratitude and humility,
05:32not arrogance.
05:36It was in Sigaw that I received
05:41my Urian Award for Best Supporting Actress.
05:47I haven't had another one since then.
05:49I've done a lot of drama films.
05:52So I think for you, it's easier.
05:54It's not easier.
05:58I'll get to that later.
06:00And then in Bliss,
06:02that was when I received a citation in Osaka.
06:06And that is like a suspense horror kind of film.
06:14So it's not really always about the genre.
06:19It is about the story.
06:21It is about how you did in that film.
06:28It's the role.
06:30It's the timing.
06:32It's...
06:35It's a lot of things.
06:37But to say that it is harder to be recognized,
06:42because maybe what they're talking about is like
06:45mainstream horror.
06:47But I think suspense, like a David Lynch film,
06:50would probably be kind of like suspense.
06:53No, it shouldn't be hard.
06:55But maybe how...
06:57If you compare it to a drama of a Meryl Streep,
07:02but of course, it really depends on the material.
07:07So, and the role.
07:09And again, Demi Moore, maybe playing this before,
07:12would not have been able to deliver as much.
07:14I don't know.
07:15I don't know her personally.
07:17But maybe it is really timing.
07:20It came to her hands at the perfect time.
07:22And then in terms of just...
07:28Because Dimples touched on this,
07:30which is not part of your question per se.
07:34But us Filipinos, knowing who we are,
07:39and really staying true to our roots,
07:43and really, I think, telling Filipino stories,
07:48and then being funded by the Philippines,
07:51and even properly funded.
07:54I think Filipino talent, I really will say,
08:01is worthy of and is capable of doing so many things.
08:09If it's talent, we do not lack that.
08:13But we are getting, every year, closer and closer to...
08:18Always just getting better.
08:20But we, I think, are at the cusp of just...
08:28We always say, Korea, how did Korea do this?
08:31I think we are very capable of bringing our culture
08:35and our talent outside of the Philippines,
08:39whether it be regional or on the global platform.
08:41I think we can really be at par
08:45with how excellent we are in terms of talent.
08:49Now, the other things, we are working on them.
