During remarks on the Senate floor Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke about the Trump Administration's proposed cuts to Social Security.

00:00So that happened on Social Security yesterday.
00:04Yesterday, after a huge wave of public outrage,
00:08the Social Security Administration temporarily delayed its plan
00:12to cut phone services for seniors and people with disabilities.
00:16But this is only a two-week delay. This is not stopping it.
00:20It's just delaying it because of the outrage, hoping it'll subside.
00:24But it won't. Americans from one end of the country to the other
00:28want to keep their Social Security.
00:32The outrage will not stop because they know that Donald Trump,
00:36Elon Musk, and Doge want to cut
00:40or even eliminate, as Musk said, Social Security.
00:44What Donald Trump and Doge are doing to Social Security is strangulation.
00:48They are taking a telephone wire and wrapping it around the neck
00:52of Social Security. But sadly, it's only
00:56the tip of the iceberg of the attack on Social Security.
01:00Up to 60% of all regional offices are shutting down.
01:04Dozens of field offices will be closed. Wait times will explode.
01:08Disability claims will face months of delay.
01:12And people will be in danger of losing the benefits they so desperately need.
01:16But the Administration doesn't care.
01:20Listen to this. This is just incredible.
01:24This is a man who's running the show in the Trump Administration.
01:28Howard Lutnick, the Commerce Secretary, thinks that if seniors lose their benefits
01:32for a month, they won't mind. He said his mother-in-law wouldn't.
01:36Spoken like a true billionaire. Once again, I remind Mr. Lutnick,
01:40not everyone has a billionaire son-in-law.
01:44And so many people depend on that monthly check for vital things like food
01:48and medicine and rent.
01:52What have Senate Republicans done while Donald Trump and DOJ take a
01:56chainsaw to Social Security? Absolutely nothing.
02:00They're quiet as a church mouse.
02:04Instead, Senate Republicans are moving forward with the President's nominee
02:08to lead Social Security, who is a self-proclaimed DOJ person.
02:12Let me tell my Republican colleagues,
02:16once again, a vote to confirm Frank Bisognano
02:20is a vote to cut Social Security.
02:24Senate Republicans should think very carefully about their vote,
02:28because once the damage is done to Social Security, there's no going back.
02:32Now on the budget.
02:36I want to reiterate something I've said about Republican plans
02:40to cut taxes for billionaires while slashing Medicaid
02:44from millions of people. It sounds as if Senate Republicans
02:48are waiting for the parliamentarian to push their so-called
02:52current policy baseline gimmick to hide the true cost of their
02:56billionaire tax giveaways. This is budgetary hocus-pocus.
03:00Even Chip Roy called it fairy dust.
03:04Republicans can try to use whatever baseline,
03:08whatever fake math they want, but the American people
03:12and the markets can see right through it.
03:16Because of this hocus-pocus, this current baseline hocus-pocus,
03:20it will increase the deficit
03:24by $37 trillion over 30 years.
03:28And the American people will pay the price
03:32in higher interest rates, and American standing in the world
03:36will go down.
